Hello, I’ve got a question about mounted combat.

Core Rulebook in mounted combat section says:

If your mount charges, you Also take the AC penalty associated with a charge . If you make an attack at the end of the charge , you receive the bonus Gained from the charge . When charging on horseback, you deal double damage with a lance

So my mount must charge if I want the bonus of the charge (double damage with lance)

Charge is however described as:

Charging is a special full-round action that allows you to move up to twice your speed and attack During the action..(ecc.ecc..).

But can I charge without the attack of my mount?

For example, I (obviously) use the lance as weapon (reach 10 ft), the Lunge feat (reach 15 ft) and Ride by attack feat on an horseback (reach 5 ft). Can I charge at a safety distance from my enemy or I have to go close to make the (useless) attack with the horse?

Only “the movment part” of the charge isn’t enough for the horse?

Thanks (sorry for the errors in my English, I’m Italian)

I would suggest this thread. As this has been discussed before. Also some decent suggestions as far as a Feet choice.
