View Full Version : [3.5] Does anyone make use of April Fools Day Content in actual games?

WotC put out various web articles over the years on April 1st and while they can be quite silly I was curious if anyone plays games where this content is actually used.

A few examples (I will add more as I find the links to them)

The Avenger (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/prc/20070401a)
Potion Miscibility (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/20060401b)
Fabulous Cats! (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/fools/20030401c)

I've used the Cat domain and the collar of perpetual attendance (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/fools/20030401c) before.

As have I. I've actually had tibbits that put a good deal of the cat rules to good use. I've also dipped Commoner for Chicken infested before, for a wide variety of reasons (mostly because it's simultaneously useful and hilarious).

To be fair the avenger is just an assassin with a different alignment requirement, so I would allow it as a DM. And the potion miscibility table is lifted from earlier editions. Probably just the author saying "Look at this weird old rule".

Only the commoner one seemed like something I wouldn't allow and I doubt any of my players would complain.

Isn't Chicken Infested actually from a dragon magazine issue or something like that? I didn't think that one was actually wotc. Not that it really matters from a game use perspective since it is exceedingly silly.

Avenger is legit. I don't think it's even supposed to be a joke.

Yes, it is Dragon content. Dragon 330, to be precise. That makes it official second-party content. Technically, it's Paizo, but it's given permission to be officially dnd by WoTC.

I do allow Chicken Infested (slightly modified to be less abusable, and if you do find a way to abuse it anyway then you'll eventually draw a Titanic Chicken of Legend), because it fills me with joy.

I don't allow any of the other Commoner flaws, not even Corpse. Nor most other April Fool's content.

Yeah, despite the article being published on april fools, I don't actually see it being much of a joke. I never even realised it was released on april fools to be honest. It's basically just a re-fluffed assassin, and I've had it in my games before.

I also use the collar of perpetual attendance from fabulous cats for a tibbit familiar a player once had who prefered being in cat form than human form.

Chicken Infested would probably be more "balanced" as a feat.

It's a 50% chance of wasting your action every time you try to draw an item. (Drawing a chicken is always a move action, because a chicken is neither a weapon nor a spell component.) That's... not a bonus.

If the chickens are worth no experience, and you're not actually generating chickens (because each chicken you draw is coming from a finite pool of chickens and they go right back into the pool when you drop them), and if you kill too many chickens you're suddenly faced with a Titanic Kaiju Chicken of Legend (which is also worth no experience), it's pretty balanced with other flaws.

Yeah, it was...

As befitting the spirit of April Fool's Day, we offer the following variant of an existing prestige class... in this case, a look at when assassins go good.

And I did not add the ellipsis.

Interestingly, because the Avenger casts spells as a Bard does, it must make noise to cast its spells.

The Assassin also casts spells like a Bard.

Collar of Perpetual Attendance is an awesome item. Definitely got a lot of use out of it while dungeon crawling.

I always wanted to abuse weresheep. I think its the only way to make dwarven defender able to preform its job.

I've never actually read that one before. That is delightful.

Given the stereotypical scottish accent of dwarves and a certain less-than-flattering stereotype of rural scottish people, my brain took the "abuse" of weresheep in a weird direction.

Anyway, potion miscibility can be pretty hilarious on a less than serious one-shot.

Remember the April Fools' errata (https://www.schadenfreudestudios.com/dnd/books/3e%20errata%20april%20fools.pdf)? :smalltongue: Wizards' link (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/4dnd/20080401a) seems to be broken at the moment, though.

I will admit I used the "chainmail bikini" for a succubus NPC, once.

I was surprised by that in an earlier thread, I think because 3.0 the assassin cast spells like a wizard, even had a spellbook. I didn't read the class in 3.5, just assumed it was the same. Frankly, it makes no bloody sense, and if they wanted to ditch the spellbook it should be "cast as a sorceror" which is how I houserule them to work.

My dwarven cleric is the proud owner of a Bag of Beanie Weenies, although he hasn't attempted to eat them all in a round to force fort saves. It initially functioned as his default meal choice, but continues to serve a social role when he offers other PCs and NPCs a snack.

...though I'd completely forgotten that it was a homebrew. My bad.
