Evil Torture Mage! 3.5e and PF

We all know torture is all kinds of bad and ick. However what spells are there available for torturing for information/fun?:smalleek: for the intrepid mage? Any source is open 3.5e or PF.

Other than the obvious of looking in the BoVD, there's a spell in the 3.0 FR book I don't think has been printed in the 3.5 update called "Flensing", which strips the flesh from a living victim. It does hp, cha, & con damage.

There are several spells labeled 'Nybor's' that are effectively torture.

Delay death, of course! :smallamused: Grab a wand (via Use Magic Device) and keep the torture going…

…can you waterboard someone with flasks of acid? Could a coup de grace be modified to split someone open while still alive? Perhaps for disemboweling, dismemberments, blood eagles, and other fun stuff.

EDIT: Don't forget to make some agony (liquid pain) while you're at it, either through the liquid pain spell or fabricate via Craft (alchemy). Assuming a typical vial is roughly 4" long with a 1" diameter, then I believe you could make about 930 vials of agony each round? That should allow a market value of over 180,000 gp. :smallbiggrin:

For those who do look in the Book of Vile Darkness, though, Eternity of Torture (Pain 9) is a good bet for really high-level casters.


The subject’s body is twisted and warped, wracked forever with excruciating pain. The subject is rendered helpless, but—as long as the spell continues—it is sustained and has no need for food, drink, or air. The subject does not age—all the better to ensure a true eternity of unimaginable torture.

It's fairly useful for setting up Liquid Ambrosia-generating opium dens when combined with the Nipple Clamps of Masochism from the same book, but even without those it's still fairly useful if you just want to put someone in an endless state of pain.

The duration is "Permanent", by the way - you'll need to Dispel it to stop it and ask questions. But hey, maybe they'll answer lest they get put back in The Machine. (They probably won't answer truthfully, though, because torture doesn't really work for getting reliable information.)


Lower-level pain rooms can be created by simply painting a Permanencied Symbol of Pain on a table and then strapping the victim to said table. Hope they enjoy "suffer[ing] wracking pains" for the entirety of their stay - it's touch-activated, lasts for an hour, and resets every ten minutes.
The only issue is getting it to not affect the torturer as well.


And, of course, you can always get creative with other spells. Flesh to Stone->Rock to Mud->untrained Perform(Statue Carving)->Mud to Rock->Stone to Flesh, Baleful Polymorph, all kinds of stuff.


Or, y'know, you could just Mind Rape the target into telling you everything that they know. Or just Dominate them. Or just use Charm Person and ask them, y'know, as a concerned friend. High-level casters don't really need torture with all the mind control (and mind reading) available.

Black Bag, a first level sorcerer/wizard and assassin spell from Book of Vile Darkness temporarily conjures a bag full of needles and scalpels and knives and other torture equipment that can also be used to store evil magic items like a bag of holding
