So I'm making a character for an upcoming game, and I want him to be a drug addict, for roleplaying purposes, and because the DM would appreciate it in the story. I'm playing a firebender (http://www.scribd.com/doc/36548716/Avatar-the-Last-d20-Supplement-MAIN-SOURCE#scribd), but you can think of him as a cleric with some free monk progressions, and only firespells. Uses wisdom, but as a skill check instead of spellcasting.

So I stared looking at drug rules, but.....they're terrible. Like..they really cripple you, even the weak ones. Am I missing something obvious?

Perhaps that a drug addiction isn't usually something that's desired?

:P Yes, I realize that. But it would be nice for it to have an impact on the level of something like marijuana, without it crippling you...because marijuana isn't crippling. Or even just nicotine.

In Drow of the Underdark there's the Vow of Decadence feat, which makes the character immune to drug overdoses and always suffer the minimum side effect in exchange for an unbreakable vow to smoke weed every day (Erelhei-Cinlu represent)

This post (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=8235956&postcount=11) covers some drug optimization. There's two ways to abuse drugs:

1) Weaponize them by exposing your enemies to multiple doses. Some drugs have overdose effects that do ability damage or status conditions like paralysis. Some of these effects are automatic and don't incur a saving throw.

2) Usr them as buffs while negating the ability damage or side effects. Some drugs offer alchemical bonuses to ability scores, which stack with enhancement bonuses.

If you're looking to buff Wisdom, Baccaran (BoVD) looks like it would work well with that Vow of Decadence.
