Anybody else have a taste for those jokes you only notice with a magnifying glass? My personal favorite is in 437, where there's a certain sound effect that accompanies a paladin/warrior's attack.

Other good ones include the off-panel mammoth fall in the "Saved Game" strip.

I love subtle jokes, but I rarely notice them.

I caught that one, guess he didn't have time to yell out (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0216.html) "Attack of Opportunity!" and just made it a sound effect.

Subtle jokes are awesome!

I initially thought that "treasure type O" was the type that gave you a random wand or staff (DMG 2nd ed). Turns out I was wrong there :)

I've been browsing again, and noticed a few other things.

In the comic summing up after the battle with Miko, when they're discussing the battle's possible outcome, Elan can be spotted desperately blowing into his kazoo while Haley and V wreck her. (201, IIRC)

In 432, after the coconut oil is spilled, you can spot a hobgoblin slipping and falling when attempting to run away.

And, probably the biggest one, is that a soldier strongly resembling Daigo (though it could just be being generic) gets call Shlubbo Nonamezaki by Belkar in 435, IIRC.

It might involve a magic staff... depends on who's getting the treasure

I'm not so sure how subtle it is, but I didn't catch this until my third readthrough:

(very slight SoD spoilers)
When Redcloak is being attacked at the circus, one of the attckers states, "this is Delta-Upsilon-Mu coming in for another strafing run...."

So what? Well, said attacker was Timothy sitting atop of Dumbo's hat. Think about the call sign for a second.... :smalltongue:

It's probably not very subtle, but I somehow like the double meaning of "death sentence".

I don't know what comic it was, but at one point Roy's sword went 'Snicker Snack'

When Miko summons Windstriker it goes, "pika!"

Pay close attention to the goblin crowd in episode 105. What the hell? (Maybe it has something to do with gender changing belts?)

2 female goblins? That's not really meant to be a joke, I think.

But it is weird, and sort of subtle. So I figured it will fit.

One of my personal favorite "little" jokes is in #431, when Redcloak is explaining about the Xykon decoys, one of the roaches is looking at the BoVD (Book of Vile Darkness) Sourcebook and going, "Ooooo! For mature audiences!" That warning is on the book, and I chuckle everytime I see it.

Have to cover your butt all legal for when those youngsters starting out in D&D try to emulate all the evil in that book!

I like the obscure reference to Peanuts in number 10 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0010.html).

:vaarsuvius: : Sir Greenhilt ... (as Marcie)
:roy: : ... And don't call me Sir! (as Peppermint Patty)

Given its an early strip, I took this as a tribute to an obvious inspiration for the style.

In the first panel of strip 41 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0041.html), Belkar is riding a goblin, who is shouting "Get it off!"

Marek

Not sure if anyone else caught this one (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0355.html), but in the very last panel you can see Roy tossing down a copper piece to Sabine after her "offer", in likely reference to her being a complete "Lady of the Night".

Yes, I have a profanity filter in my brain. So sue me.

I don't think that is riding. I think he just jumped up so he could stab it in the head

I think that's her scrunchie that she's taking out of her hair two panels prior. Or her peircing.

Copper pieces aren't normally red.

Every now and then I spot one.

Wow! I didn't realize that Roy's sword is vorpal! Thanks for pointing that out.

I haven't seen other evidence of his sword being vorpal (other than the lewis carrol-esque sound effect) and therfore I must say that the vorpal enchantment on his sword is part of the fantasy of defeating Xykon.

I think that's her scrunchie that she's taking out of her hair two panels prior. Or her peircing.

I believe previous arguments have determined it to be her scrunchie or whatever it was that held in her hair. You can see her pull it out a few panels earlier.

Rich wasn't quite as detailed back then in his drawing, but I think the idea is actually that Belkar has somehow forced the goblin to be lying on the floor, and is on top of it beating it to death. Not exactly riding, but not jumping either.

The sound effect for when Trigak dies is "Gak! Gak! Gak!" From the three different heads.

In 401 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0401.html), its funny how Roy is the only one who slept the whole time. I hardly noticed that he wasn't involved in the previous battle and the explaination made me laugh.

I also like the fact that they're eating pancakes with chopsticks. It wouldn't work!
