View Full Version : The Brick Awards: The Best of the Worst Tournament #531-550

About 2 years ago, a great forumite named Porthos created an OOTS voting contest (based on a much shorter lived, but equally fantastic, previous version) which had forum goers vote on the best OOTS strips of all time. It was an impressive contest which has gone on for over 2 years (and only ended, or went on hiatus, due to running out of strips) and will undoubtedly be remembered in this forum as one of the most well-run ongoing threads on here.

This is not that contest. This is a shameless mockery of that contest.

Welcome to The Brick Awards, the Best of the Worst Tournament!

The Stick Awards were handed out to the best strips of all time as chosen by our fellow Playgrounders. However, when voting for the Stick awards, some strips felt left out, abused, unloved. Whether they simply were a weak strip, or a decent strip surrounded by amazing strips, for whatever reason some strips just didn't get any votes. :smallfrown:

So this contest is designed to give those strips the morale boost they need and deserve! I am collecting all the strips which received zero votes in the Stick awards and presenting them in groups of ten (Or, at least close to ten, since I don't want to cut off in the middle of a group of strips). We will then vote as to which is our favorite of the worst strips so we can finally decide which the best worst strip is!

(And let's be honest, even the worst OOTS strips are still pretty good and deserve our appreciation!)

To vote in this thread, simply state which comic of the ten nine listed is your favorite. Bolding the number of the comic (Like this) helps it stand out.

Voting will last until Tuesday March 8 at 10AM (MT). Any votes made after that will NOT count toward the totals.

Last week was a week of belated, but well deserved, awards. Leo finally got his Oscar and :belkar: #516 Turning Azurite, I Think I'm Turning Azurite, I Really Think So (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0516.html) finally got a weekly award.

Was amused by the joke in 534--framing a gag about psychics around a ghost who can't get through to the medium is pretty clever. I'm taking 540 as the king of the heap, though, for Haley defining her leadership style by throwing Belkar's chocolate off a mountain. (Just typing that made me happy.)

So we're voting on the illustrious title of cream of the crap? :smalltongue:

I almost want to go with 521 for the Connecting the dots thing, but I have to say 532, because serfway and the summon romantic partner spell.

#545 takes my vote this round, the result of Redcloak's surprisingly decent attempt at bargaining with O'Chul, but most importantly the dramatic irony. Had this played out ever-so-slightly differently Team Evil could have won last book, but thankfully...

The O-Chul sequence remains one of my favorites of all time (and this part of Haley and Belkar's plotline one of my less favorite sequences), so I feel more or less compelled to vote for one of the latter strips. Out of those, 541: He's a Gamblin'...Thing is probably the coolest, so let's go for that.

It's 545 for me - mainly due to the "control group". :redcloak: Some of us got passing grades in Chem.

Lots of decent strips, none reaching true brilliance though.

My most liked are: 531 with the abjuration-induced tingling, 532 because of Dorukan and Lyrian , 540 for almonds justice and cute fuzzy animals.

My top pick of the lot is #537 though. I totally love the Haley-Celia-Belkar interaction, and the eyeliner idea is incredibly funny. Plus it leads to one of my absolute favourites (the Darkblood Gloomgloom strip).

544. It just shows how much Redcloak has changed since DCF.

I'm going to go for the interlaced subtle comedy that is 534.

Oh, yeah, looking at those strips that makes sense now. I imagine that there are some rounds of 10 with even stronger pull towards one particular strip.

In this batch, we have to remember that Belkar preemptively avoided a war with the gnomes in #539 and O-Chul showed us what a Paladin is capable of in #542.

Surprises are cause to pull up Porthos' handy results compilation for the Stick Awards II to see the strength of the competition:

Moving forwards, 550-560 only had 2 0 votes - pretty well spread out. (551 and 553). 560-570 had 5 0 votes (562-564, 566, and 569) - dominated due to 568 (and Belkar's Mark of Justice Activating), and 570-580 had 6 0 votes! (573 - 575, 577, 579, and 580) - which was split between 571 (the oracle's resurrection) and 578 (Haley's escape from the golems).

Things get pretty decisive in this part of the story as there are a lot of highlighted points with a bunch of moving the plot along. 13/30 0 votes = 43% of these 30 are no votes.

I'm actually here today! On time!

However, I am training at work today, so I doubt I will be able to finish this thread/ start the next thread today. So expect it tomorrow morning! (Or whatever time of day it will be where you live in 22 hours or so)
