is the 3.5 hobgoblin worth the LA?

No, it's a LA +0.5 if anything, too weak for 1, too strong for 0.

All they get worth noticing is a net +4 to stats. So... no, they're a very weak +1. They'd be slightly strong at +0, but even at +0 they'd be weaker than, say, lesser planetouched, warforged, and whisper gnome.

what do you think is the best race worth there LA(IF THEY HAVE ONE) for melee combat such as a warblade or sometime of fighter..etc.

The Feral template in Savage Species is pretty decent, and so is the Dragon Magazine version of Half-Ogre

Water Orc at +0. Goliath at +1. Half-ogre at +2.

EDIT: The Dragon Magazine half-ogre is better than the Races of Destiny half-ogre, as Cerefel says, but you may encounter some DMs (including me) who rule that the RoD half-ogre overrides and replaces the DM half-ogre, never mind that one is a race and the other a template -- and also some DMs who don't allow Dragon Magazine content at all. That said, Dragon Magazine's half-minotaur template is often mentioned in the same breath as its half-ogre, and the two are comparable.

There's a Warblade Handbook (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?176968-Masters-of-the-Sword-A-Warblade-s-Handbook-Under-Construction) with good Race choices.

Probably a Goliath, from RoS. +4 Str, +2 Con, treated as Large and can use large weapons without penalty? Yes please!

They take a small hit to Int, iirc, but other than that they're great

With the addition of Warshaper (and the assumption that there is no effective limit on the number of Natural Weapons it can grow), probably Changeling. Get pounce (there are several ways to do so) and it will pretty much obliterate anything it charges at.

Outside of that case (which is probably close to theoretical op, if not already there), Water Orc is a strong one.

Let's do a side by side comparison between the hobgoblin and the similar goblin (a weak LA 0 race). Goblins also have 30ft move speed and 60ft darkvision, and also suffer from the "oh boo hoo it's a monster, hike up the LA" stigma. They cede ground in ability scores (the CHA penalty doesn't matter, but a -2 compared to a +2 hurts) but make up for it with +4 to 2 more skills (Hide and Ride). So they are pretty comparable. Except goblins are LA0.

If you really want a hobgoblin, go for the Fire Hobgoblin instead. They trade darkvision and their stealth bonus for low-light vision and +2 INT/-2 CHA. Since CHA is a dump stat, it's basically free INT, which gives more precious skill points. At level 20, that's +23 to a skill, instead of a puny +4.

Dex, not int.

Dex, not int.

Even better, that means all the Warblade's Int based abilities will function perfectly well

If you do go with a goliath, I insist you must, at some point, kill an enemy with a goatball.

"We were just playing goatball, honest!"

"Is that what they're calling it these days?"

Thomas Baxa strikes again! Some of my favorite, ahem, creations of his are from Complete Divine (examples 1 (http://archive.wizards.com/dnd/images/cd_gallery/82293.jpg) 2 (http://archive.wizards.com/dnd/images/cd_gallery/82290.jpg) 3 (http://archive.wizards.com/dnd/images/cd_gallery/81335.jpg)). His Ur-Priest (http://archive.wizards.com/dnd/images/cd_gallery/81359.jpg) is pretty great, though - it's actually one of my favorite pieces of D&D art, after this fine fellow (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/5n_gallery/90017.jpg) of course.

Goatball? Go on...

Races of Stone 59;

It's a game where two teams of four goliaths (or anyone else with the guts to join a game) hop from platform to platform tossing an awfully misshapen "ball" made of a stuffed goat hide back and forth. Lots of shoving is involved and only goliaths can throw the ball with proficiency.

Why does that morningstar look like a club with a spiked iron ball floating behind it? What possible tactical advantage is that lich expecting from doing the splits? And why isn't the cleric holding the morningstar in the wrong place?

2 (http://archive.wizards.com/dnd/images/cd_gallery/82290.jpg)

What's wrong with that jaguar? Did it get launched from a catapult or something?

I can't believe the reused this image for the 5th edition favored soul.
