View Full Version : Pathfinder Scaling magic item, please PEACH (edited)

Hello Mates

I really like the Idea of Scaling items (so much that a character of mine has the Armageddon plate even though it’s mediocre) but the ones provided to us are, in my opinion, not worth their money.
So here is my attempt to make a melee weapon geared for a castigator paladin something like (but hopefully better than) The Holy Avenger.

Let’s dive into it then shall we?
scaling magic items rules (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/gamemastering/other-rules/scaling-magic-items)
Estimating Magic Item Gold Piece Values
(http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic-items#Table-Estimating-Magic-Item-Gold-Piece-Values)
It has come to my attention that I had miscalculated the price of the continuous spell (the example given didn't help either) as such wrath has been cut . Also many thanks to Fokeno for suggesting the scaling of the abilities with the Charges per day method. Do note that I have in place the price discount for being a paladin only weapon and needing skill ranks religion max (40% discount)
From reading the above here is: "The Champion's Gift, Blade of the Archangel"

1) Assigning an Unlock Level: Now that you have a cost for the next scaling ability, assign a level at which that ability unlocks. This follows the same process as the Pricing the Base Item step, but using the new cost. You should usually round down, but if you're almost at the higher-level price, bump up the level. For example, a prize that priced out at 8,000 gp at a given set of powers would unlock those powers at 9th level (6,900 gp), but if the price hits 9,000 gp, the abilities should instead unlock at 10th level (9,300 gp). (This helped me make the Max Item Worth for Assigning an Unlock Level column)

2)Item Requires Skill to Use: Some items require a specific skill to get them to function. This factor should reduce the cost about 10%.
Item Requires Specific Class or Alignment to Use: Even more restrictive than requiring a skill, this limitation cuts the price by 30%.
The above were used to calculate the price of the weapon (FYI the class is paladin and the skill is knowledge religion although it could be something more useful).

Latest version "The Champion's Gift, Blade of the Archangel" The Champion's Gift, Blade of the Archangel The Champion's Gift, Blade of the Archangel

With a blade almost reaching five feet in length and a hilt close to 13 inches the Champion’s Gift is massive yet elegant sword, striking awe in the hearts of foes. Angelic patterns decorate the hilt guard and the blade. The almost translucent white blade shines with golden celestial syllabary when it is used to smite evil, reading “I am the Champion’s Gift, Blade of the Archangel, ender of evil, the last argument.”

This exquisite Nodachi appears to be just a masterwork weapon in the hands of anyone other than a paladin. Should a character with half or more his total level in the paladin class and maxed per level knowledge religion skill ranks wield it then the weapon gains the abilities as shown on the table below based on his total character level.

While this sword is not unique it is extremely rare for more than one to exist at the same time as it requires a special kind of soul to summon it to existence most times with him being none the wiser. Destiny or even gods will guide events for the soon to be champion to acquire the weapon and from then on a symbiotic relationship will be forge between wielder and blade. The soul will reflect the blade and the blade will reflect the soul. With each reflex ion each of the counterparts refines itself becoming purer and stronger.

* The player may upon leveling up and unlocking the increase of the enchantment bonus may rearrange the enchantment bonus however he wants as long as the some of the bonuses don’t exceed the ones provided by the table(as per your level) and follow the normal rules for magic weapons. Additionally the player may opt to diminish the total enchantment bonus by 1 to add the sizing property to the weapon until he unlocks it normally upon level 14.
** As per Reliquary arms and shields
***The activation is per use so the player should choose a simple action such as drawing the weapon or saying a quick prayer

Level 1 over the budget by 21g but we can let that slide right?

2nd
Gains the symbol of the deity of the Paladin or an Ideal if the paladin doesn’t follow one, counts as a holy symbol and some consecration benefits nice! Follows the rules of create-reliquary-arms-and-shields

3rd
1 per day bless as a free action when drawing the blade

4th
plain and simple

5th
just barely within budget we gain 1/day divine favor as a free action and bless 2/day as a free action when drawing the sword

6th
I don’t want the holy weapon to get rusty or sundered so …

7th
more uses of our free buffs

8th
plain and simple, the user might opt to diminish the bonus by 1 to add resizing before level 14

9th
now our blade is always blessed! Oh look at this level we get a feat as well hope it’s improved critical. Divine favor gets better but still only twice per day

10th
at this point I have inputted the option to rearrange the enchantment bonuses once to allow for +2 enchantment the player might want. I would personally go for the +3 plain and simple. The user might opt to diminish the bonus by 1 to add resizing before level 14

11th
3 times per day as a free action full effect Divine Favor!

12th
I have inputted the option to rearrange the enchantment bonuses once to allow for +3 enchantment the player might want or any other combination the user might opt to diminish the bonus by 1 to add resizing before level 14

13th
Divine favor continuous and a weapon that can sunder/is harder to sunder

14th
I have inputted the option to rearrange the enchantment bonuses once to allow for +4 enchantment the player might want or any other combination. The Blade gets resizing as a default on this level so no need to diminish the bonus by 1 any more

15th
Awesome spell as a free action 1 per day. The paladin most likely will be able to cast it from his own spell slots but not as a free action

16th
I have inputted the option to rearrange the enchantment bonuses once to allow for +5 enchantment the player might want or any other combination. The Blade gets resizing as a default so no need to diminish the bonus by 1 any more

17th
I have inputted the option to rearrange the enchantment bonuses once to allow for +5 enchantment the player might want or any other combination. The Blade gets resizing as a default so no need to diminish the bonus by 1 any more

18th
I have inputted the option to rearrange the enchantment bonuses once to allow for +5 enchantment the player might want or any other combination. 3 times per day should be enough for your adventuring day but…

19th
…why not have it up constantly! Yes ! I actually made this weapon just for the sake of this ability. Also I have inputted the option to rearrange the enchantment bonuses once to allow for +5 enchantment the player might want or any other combination

20th
Final rearrange of the enchantment bonuses and we even managed to reach maxxed with some gold to spare. That’s why I increased the benefits of the Angelic Aspect, Greater a little to make for a nice Capstone.

OK so this weapon should be pretty awesome in actual play. Have I missed something obvious? Are my calculations incorrect? Would you allow it as a DM? Would you pick it up as a Player?

Well, you are missing a "+7" in your progression, despite having every other number from 1 to 10.

Thanks for your reply!

Hehe indeed the +7 is missing. The Reason was simply that the Item had enough "gold cost room" to go straight from +6 to +8.

Another thing I missed was that the minimum caster level for a paladin to cast Angelic Aspect, Greater as a 4th lvl spell is actually 10 (as his caster level lags behind 3 levels) so I could save some money there and push it earlier,

At level 20 I increased the effects of the spell Angelic Aspect, Greater to make for a nice capstone and make them relevant (at least the numeric ones).

This is version 2 of the scaling item. I believe this is the correct sub forum as it uses the rules of the game yes?
