View Full Version : Teleporting into a prismatic sphere?

Can you teleport into a prismatic sphere? My friend says no, that it 'blocks all spells passing through it'. I think it's yes as teleporting is moving through the astral plane and not through the material/etheral plane, and same with dimension door, and he won't accept me saying it.

Yes, you can. Teleport is Range: Personal and Target: You (plus touched passengers), so there's no question of the Sphere blocking Line of Effect. As for it blocking the actual transit, the teleportation subschool (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicOverview/spellDescriptions.htm#teleportation) goes through the astral plane. A Prismatic Sphere blocks things on the plane it is cast on (usually the prime material), plus the ethereal plane because it's an abjuration (see etherealness (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/specialAbilities.htm#etherealness) for reference). Neither Prismatic Sphere nor the spell it references, Prismatic Wall, make any mention of the astral plane, so it does not block travel to and from the astral plane. "Crossing" the boundary of the Sphere is done while in the astral plane, which the Sphere does not affect unless cast there, so no part of the trip actually makes contact with the Sphere. Without that contact, the Sphere does nothing to prevent it.

Sequence of events when casting Teleport:
1) You enter the astral plane while outside the Sphere. Obviously, the Prismatic Sphere does not prevent this.
2) You move some distance entirely within the astral plane. The Sphere does not exist on the astral plane, so it obviously can't affect this.
3) You exit the astral plane to a point inside the Sphere. The Sphere does not erect any barriers between planes, so it does not block this either. Teleportation complete, you are now inside the Prismatic Sphere.

So a Transdimensional* Prismatic Sphere might work?

Transdimensional Spell helps against incorporeality, ethereality, the plane of shadow, and extra-dimensional spaces such as bags of holding, rope tricks, etc. The astral plane is none of these, so no.

Combine the Sphere with a Dimensional Lock (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/dimensionalLock.htm), however, and that would work.

The only problum is that you cant see anything inside of the sphere, which may reduce your teleport accuracy. Dimension door is much more efficient, being lower level and only needed a direction and a distance.
