View Full Version : Pretentious Wizard Titles

I play a Conjurer in a 3.P game. A snooty, smarter-than-thou Conjurer specialized in cloudbased spells. It's common for a wizard in his guild to grant themselves a title or nickname (generally not exceeding three or four syllables) at some point in their career- ___ of Seven Forms, ___ the Unknowable, ___ Thundercaller. I've had difficulty coming up with something suitably cloud-relative, and ostentatious without reaching the five-syllable taboo. It's struck me that he might refer to himself as a Nimbotheurge, but that's not really the right sort of title. Any input would be appreciated.

Oh, he also has a personal vendetta against Enchanters and velociraptors. So that could factor in to the name.

Cirrocumulus and Cumulonimbus sound pretty up there so you could go with something like Hendrix of the Arcane Cumulonimbus. Stratocaster is a good one too

The Cloudcaller wouldn't be too bad, though kinda similar to "Thundercaller". What's the latter specialized in?

Thundercaller is a hypothetical. Of Seven Forms was my Transmitation teacher, and The Unknowable was my Conjuration teacher.

Apparently the four-syllable thing isn't quite accurate, more syllables is not unheard of but more syllables means more importance, and I'm not that important as of yet. (That was poorly worded, sorry.) Right now I'm leaning towards "of Fractured Gazes," due to excessive use of sight-blocking spells and Glitterdust.

In a previous game, I designed an organization of magi with the naming scheme: "People who are scary don't try to sound scary."

My level 1 character obviously wasn't that scary, so he picked a terrifying title. "Tempest-Terror", I think, because he liked using Thunder damage.

His master, though? That guy was "The Gentle Zephyr".

That guy was terrifying.

If you/your group have no problem with shout-outs „the Oncoming Storm” could be fitting.:smalltongue: or, a bit simpler, but much more obvious „the Doctor”

the Fog.

Long names are given to complicated things, short names are for forces of nature.
(Bonus points if it takes people over 5 minutes to realize that the name sounds so weird because it implies there is such a thing as "a fog".)

Although seriously, you should totally go with Stratocaster, or maybe Cumulonimbus.

"Altostratus" sounds sufficiently snooty to me.

You could also go with the pithier title "Altus" - but Dragon Age kinda beat you to that one.

_____ of Silver Linings

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner. The character in question has a celestial bloodline, thus silver is in his... Well, his blood is red, but silver is in his eyes, his hair, and his spells. Not to mention all over his clothing and anyone who he can convince to wear his livery. It fits with the cloud spells, as well. I'm thinking perhaps of Quicksilver Linings, given his proclivity towards poisoning and nauseating clouds in specific (Wall of Smoke, Cloud of Bewilderment, Stinking Cloud, of course Cloudkill once it's available) as well as alchemy. Much appreciated! Nimbusene and Starless Night also stand out, though they didn't seem quite right for the character. Thanks everyone!

There is (almost) always that moment, the moment where you know you have found the thing you were looking for, even though you had no idea a moment ago. Anyways this is kind of fun, even the rejected names were pretty good and would work this other characters.

At any rate, it's great that you found a title that fits your vision. ;)

How that happened will always be a mistery. My mind wasn't clouded at all, my ideas should have rained supreme.

(I'd reply in a manner less full of myself, but the puns won't let me.)

Yeeaaaahhh... We get plenty of flatulence jokes at our table without putting one in the name of a character. :P

Weather manipulation is awesome, so IMO if you can control the weather, you are well within your right to call yourself THE HAMMER OF THE GODS or THE FURY OF THE HEAVENS or something equally pompous.

Rusvul
2016-03-27, 02:52 PM
Ehh. It's not so much weather manipulation on a grand scale as it is conjuring small clouds of things- Sleet, sand, smoke, fog... Depends on what you consider weather manipulation, really.
