so I remember hearing that instead of a god a cleric can worship and aliment
but I feel like there was a catch to this like if you were lawful neutral worshiping one of your domains had to match your aliment. is this true or am I missing something

You don't necessarily need to worship the alignment itself. You could be an animist or similar belief system.

Here's how it works:

1) you don't want to worship any of the published deities
2) you pick 2 domains you think are interesting
3) you pick an alignment
4) alignment restrictions apply

that means you still aren't allowed to prepare spells with an opposing alignment component even if you don't worship a god. For example, if you wanted to roll a NG cleric, you could not cast bind to hell, because it's an [Evil] spell.

that's all there is to it. specifics are here (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/classes/cleric.htm)

If your game's set in eberron and/or your dm is flexible, you can ignore the bit about alignment.
