New comic is up.

Forget Durcula.
From now on I'm using "the Thorsaken".
Or Greg. That works too.

Finally the Order gets to considering the question we've been pondering for months: what to call the vampire formerly known as Durkon.

Nice. Been good to have a couple of strips of light humor to break up the tension before the conflicts come to a head again.

I'm going with "Greg," myself.

You know, in the novel "Galapagos" by Kurt Vonnegut, the people who are about to die have an asterix before their names, like *Durkon.

Please, Giant, tell me - did you read that book? I read it just now, although it was published in 1985. Isn't that a freak coincidence? :smalleek:

Indeed--if this comic is a response to the forum, then it's definitely a "Durkula or High Priest of Hel? Is that the best you can do? Let me school you all in how to make up names."

Insofar as that was the intent, consider us schooled (not that most of us doubted that the Giant is cleverer than we are about this sort of thing...that's kind of why he writes the comic and we read it after all!).

I wonder how much of this was influenced by the forum. I have to say though, I really like "Thorsaken" and "Hel's Shell".

This is actually the first time I think the Giant IS answering the forums in comic.

Usually, when I see people suggest that in the thread, I'm like, "Get over yourself, the Giant is perfectly capable of anticipating obvious questions about his comic and in any case has been writing for the Books ever since he started putting the comics in books. The comic NEEDS to work without any reference to the forum, and the obvious question was obvious."

What to call Greg was always an obvious question, that the Giant would address it doesn't need him to be responding to the Forum.

But the shear extent of spending an entire strip on it, with so many silly suggestions (and so much better than most of ours). I really think this one is likely a response to the Forum. Can't prove it of course, because (a) it's funny, and (b) it would still work without the forum. But everyone's allowed a crazy theory or two and this is mine.

To me, this is what it looks like if the Giant actually bothers to answer the forum in comic rather than in the forum.

I love the weird comeradie between the Order. They've been apart so many times in the past few books, it's nice to have a breather where they're all together, being their socially unacceptable selves.

Comedy gold but still showing them dealing with the Durkon* (easier than "durkon" so i'm going with that... And probably alternating with Greg:smalltongue:) situation, great strip.

On the forum side, I'm not really seeing this as a direct response to the forum. It could be of course, but the forum coming up with names was quite foreseeable, and it works fine in universe as well.
The setup as i saw it doesn't lend itself to the idea to me either.

1st panel to announce preparation and to start the next panel, 4 panels on the teams feelings on fighting Durkon, and Belkar clarifying Durkon as Durkon*
3 panels of setting up then delivering the joke that Roy thinks they should use a different name to distance Greg from Durkon, and getting a barrage of mostly punny names and then Roy realizing that wasn't the best idea and settling on Durkon*
1 panel of reestablishing the point that they need to perpare themselves emotionally for fighting an undead with Durkon's face and memories.
And then the punchline panel joke of going back to name jokes.
To be it appears the main point is the Emotional stuff and half of the joke and the punchline is them getting sidetracked by name jokes, and to me it used only the necessary panel time on the joke.

And there is an absence of anything connecting it to the forum for sure. All of the names we used that are in the comic are obvious ones to me, and the joke in comic doesn't really match up to the name discussions on the forum to me. Just the basics of us coming up with Punny names.
So i think The Giant has had these Puns under his Hat for a long while and was intending to use them once he set up this arc and this is the ideal placement.

Lizard Lord
2016-03-25, 06:32 PM
Okay I am actually confused by Roy not wanting to use any of those names. It was his idea to name Vamp-Durkon in the first place so why is it that none of those qualify? Just because they are silly I guess, but Hel's Shell is honestly the most accurate (well next to the Corpse Formally Known as Durkon).

To me going "I personally don't like those so we will just go back to the more confusing terminology" is sillier than any of those names.

zimmerwald1915

Count Durkula
Noooo! Now that name has appeared in canon, so I can't complain about other people using an "obnoxious fan name" when they use it!

Ah well, it's not like it not being in the comic stopped people from using it. And it was worth it just for "The Thorsaken".

So...how about the vampire be called Chronicles of Durkon, and the real Durkon be referred to as World of Durkon Classic?

Oooh, or maybe we can call one of them Durkon 8.1, and the other one Durkon 10. If anyone asked what happened to Durkon 9, just sarcastically say "we couldn't call him Durkon One."

EDIT: Or if the vampire is destroyed and Durkon is ressurected, we could call the vampire "Durkon: The Masquerade," and the restored Durkon "Durkon: The Requiem."

I believe what he is asking is how does Roy know that Durkon* is physically holding Durkon's soul hostage. All Roy should know is that the Durkon* isn't Durkon. The logical assumption is that Durkon is properly dead and has moved on, like how most physical undead that aren't Liches function.

I believe what he is asking is how does Roy know that Durkon* is physically holding Durkon's soul hostage. All Roy should know is that the Durkon* isn't Durkon. The logical assumption is that Durkon is properly dead and has moved on, like how most physical undead that aren't Liches function.

As has been pointed out:
http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots1019.html
(http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots1019.html)

Notice where Greg is pointing during his final statement and what he is saying.

Roy knows EXACTLY where Durkon's soul is, because Greg outright told him.

Wow, Roy really is smart, I had missed that reference. I thought that Durkula meant that he'll be the caretaker of Durkon's soul in the domain of Hel (or Hel's Hell) when the world gets destroyed. I didn't get that he means he's keeping Durkon's soul in the head of its body. (Even though we know he does)

I assume that the real takeaway for Roy in that scene is that Durkula's got hold of Durkon's soul, and a good resurrection/true resurrection will hopefully reboot the old Durkon, specifics about "where" or exactly how the soul is being held, aside.

Personally, I was a fan of Durkoff for a while, and it was great to see Durkula get a mention in the comic. I think I too shall go with Greg or maybe just Durkon* out of respect. Those names, though!

Right before Phyrnglsnyx teleports out he says he'll keep Durkon's soul safely imprisoned while pointing at his head.
Thanks for pointing that out. I missed that part completely. I guess that sudden realization could also explain why Roy went Super Saiyan right before throwing his sword.

I was pretty surprised at that phrase too, but I'm putting it down to a coincidence on The Giant's part. I haven't really done much in the Oots section. (Aside from naming the fith (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?452875-Things-You-Never-Noticed-V-Your-Familiar) incarnation of Things you Never noticed)

I'm thinking of this as more of a pacing page, something to breathe after the big fight with the-corpse-that-must-be-named, something light and funny. It also shows the Order being enlightened as to the status of Durkon*, and mentally preparing to fight (something that looks like) their friend, if you want plot progression.

pastor expiration wins easily in my book. also, I dont think this strip was complete filler. even ignoring the emotional processing of fighting Greg for a moment, this strip now clearly establishes Roy had a full day of uninterrupted time to read the book and maybe put one of those rituals into effect

Who is that coherent-sounding blonde fellow talking to Belkar during the first few strips? And where's Elan?

Just face it: Elan invested an ability point in INT when he last levelled up. Rich is just RPing it already.

We got the first hint of Elan's raised INT in 1027 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots1027.html): Elan actually realizes that Banjo is a just puppet (or, at least, that Roy thinks so), and hence shouldn't be given a vote in the Godsmoot.

Well, I dunno if Rich actually means to depict Elan with an increased INT, but something appears to have happened, anyway.

Maybe some other mind-intruding scheme, maybe it's Nale's soul that has returned from oblivion and occupied Elan's vulnerable flesh?

If Elan turns out to be possessed, some way or the other, can I claim "told you so" ?

Or maybe it's just too much cold fresh air up there in the North on a flying ship. Air can do that to your mind, you know....

Guesses for who suggested what:

Here's my list.

Elan:
Jerkon
Nokrud
Durkzarro
Greg

Belkar:
Nose-Fur-atu
Pastor Expiration
Deep Fang Friar

Haley:
Undurkon
Nega-Dwarf
The Thorsaken

Vaarsuvius:
The Corpse Formerly Known as Durkon
Leechy Veinquaff
Whiskers in the Dark

Blackwing:
The Creature Preacher
Hel's Shell

There's only so much hair can do. Does he have this hair on the bottom of his feet too? (Not attempting to be sarcastic, I am genuinely curious)I agree that the hair on the feet of halflings should only do so much to insulate (especially since it is only ever portrayed on the top). Even if halflings had hairy soles, that wouldn't really help, since that hair wouldn't be staying stiff and keep air trapped in it. Personally, I choose to believe that halflings develop thicker skin on their feet, as a wild mammal does similarly overall. If their feet are generally less sensitive I think that goes further toward every halfling adopting the tradition of not wearing shoes regardless of climate.

Nega-Dwarf

Elan:

Durkzarro

Belkar:
Jerkon (I think this one is most definitely his)
Hel's Shell

Leechy Veinquaff
Creature Preacher

The Corpse Formerly Known as Durkon (I think that one's a given)

I think the more alliterative ones are likely to be elan's and the beard-centric or more derivative ones are belkar's, with Haley and V splitting the rest.

something like

Haley
Nokrud
Durkzarro
Undurkon
(mostly because I think Haley's would be short and to the point)

V
Nega-dwarf (V has a tendency to identify things he doesn't like by race. E.G. the halfling)
The corpse formerly known as durkon
leechy veinquaff (this one could also be belkar, but the vernacular moves it more into something V would say, with an outside chance of haley in a moment of levity.)

Elan
Count Durkula
Deep fang friar
Hel's shell (this joke might be a little to advanced for elan, but the rhyming gag fits him to a T)
Creature Preacher (same)
Thorsaken

Belkar
jerkon
whiskers in the dark
nose-fur-atu
Pastor expiration

Blackwing

Greg.

I just wonder how long Rich's been sitting on all of those puns, waiting to unleash them upon us.

It is a testament to his abilities as an artist that he held onto them for so on. Beethoven didn't drop "Ode to Joy" on us at the start of the 9th; no, he worked up to it for 45 minutes or so.

Roy says "we're going after the monster holding Durkon captive". Maybe I missed the part where Roy knows that the Vampire has imprisoned Durkon's soul? Or does he mean holding the body captive?

When The Sinister Minister points to his head and tells Roy "Don't worry, Roy. I'll take good care of Durkon's soul for all eternity in my mistress' planar domain (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots1019.html)" that is a pretty strong clue to someone of Roy's intelligence. A good writer does not produce the Cliff Notes version of their story for your convenience. If your only interest is finding out "what happens", drop by every 6 months or so and read 25 strips at a sitting. Generally speaking, "something happens" at least that often. Considering we just had this book's villain and his scheme be revealed to the heroes and have a big confrontation with them, I have to conclude that by "pointless" you mean "not directly involving Xykon and a Gate."

That being the case, I suggest you check back in a year or two, not September--if, that is, you for some reason want to read the conclusion of a webcomic with so many pointless comics interspersed around the statistically tiny number of comics where the overall hero throws down with the overall villain. Even then, you'll probably find the end disappointing, you know.

I'll just let myself out.

Durk Vader

Please add this to the grand list

Why don't we call him Durkon' ? Because he's derived from the original Durkon, get it?

Oh, no. The vampire is clearly the complex conjugate of Durkon, aka D̅u̅r̅k̅o̅n̅: same real part (body) but the imaginary part (soul) negated.

You mean Durkoni or Durkonj for those working in the Electrical/Electronics field?

Um, no. That would just rotate him 90° counter-clockwise.

Vampire Durkon's thinking is a little crooked

Concerning Belkar's bare feet, I don't know about D&D halflings, but this is what Tolkien said about hobbit feet in The Hobbit:

And given they're (nearly) constantly eating, they could have a very high metabolic rate, which would raise their body core temperature, and thus their bodies would be able keep blood flowing to their extremities in lower temperatures than the other races would.

To those complaining of pointless comics; think of it story-wise. You can't have a constant roar of dramatic tension getting louder and louder. All you'll get is noise. You need places to slow down. We know the Mechane is on the move, we know the clocks ticking. But there's story threads that require a change of pace; Roy can't be battling his way through infinite Vampire dwarves on his way to Phyrnglsnyx and read a book about legacy weapons at the same time, multitasking or no. Elan and Haley need time to process what's just happened (V and Belkar less so). If the comics were compacted into a space food cube of core storyline, there's no room for emotional or character growth. If you want the story compressed, here it is;
Roy wins.

Don't like it? Then here's the dark edgy version;
Xykon wins.

In the end, we're here, and have been here for ten years, because we engage with the characters and love the storyline. I've read stories which were write ups of D&D campaigns where it's one easily won fight after another. They're boring.

That's an excellent suggestion.

I don't know, math puns are an odd choice. They might make the 1% happy, but they aren't perfect and the lowest common denominators could get irrational and obtuse about them. I, for one, have no problem with these puns, but if they get more abstract they could be divisive, we're all in different sets and then it's Aleph for Nought.

Oh, it's not perfect, I agree, but I don't think it'll cause acute distress. Our board arguments are rational, after all, since while they never terminate they repeat endlessly.

Or dDurkon/d... something. I suppose he's changed with respect to life, so dDurkon/dlife.

How about -Durkon?

Or !Durkon in C based languages.

Or ~Durkon (similar to Durkon, but not Durkon).

If you're going to put some form of punctuation around his name, just smoosh the two together.

Durkon* -> Durkonsterisk
Durkon' -> Durkonstrophe (also because that's what he's about to create)

"Durkonstrophe" makes me want to say it should be "Durktastrophe," which reminds me of this scene:

Actually, if we're doing this mathematically, Durkon' would be "Durkon prime".

Wouldn't Durkon Prime be leader of the Dorfobots?

My favorite Vampire Durkon names:

1. Durkula (I've used that back when I was more active),

2. Jerkon (that sounds like a Belkar),

3. Nose-fur-atu (I have a beard adn mustache too),

4. The Thorsaken,

5. The Corpse Formally Known as Durkon (that's got Vaarsuvius written all over it) and

6. Greg. HA! "Greg".

As an honorable mention: "Nega-Dwarf". I like referencing Scott Pilgrim. SP was fun.

That would imply that the vampire Durkon should be called, not Negadwarf but Megadwarf.

That would imply that the vampire Durkon should be called, not Negadwarf but Megadwarf.Well, when he's using Hel's Might it seems appropriate. But, then we need an evil dwarven bard (http://transformers.wikia.com/wiki/Soundwave_%28G1%29) with summoned pets (http://transformers.wikia.com/wiki/Decepticon_Mini-Cassette), at least one of which is winged (http://transformers.wikia.com/wiki/Laserbeak_%28G1%29).

I can't decide if this is a reference to the Autobots (more likely) or the Go-Bots (considerably less likely). If it's the former, the latter is probably the Gnome-Bots. Gnome-Bats?

It is said in the most holy and ancient of scripture that he who utters the words "Autobots" and "Go-bots" in the same diatribe, much less the same sentence, is the most unholy of heretics and must be scourged... SCOURGED!

SCOURGED!You have some work to do over at Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Gobots&oldid=712270590), then.

Subsequently, the universe depicted in the animated series Challenge of the GoBots and follow-up film GoBots: Battle of the Rock Lords was established as an alternate universe within the Transformers franchise. Also, Peter Cullen did voices for both. Do you dare to stand against Peter Cullen?

We already turned him into a Decepticon in the Alternate Stickverse thread. Lemme see if I can find a link...

edit: OOTS in a Different Genre (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?286398-OotS-in-a-difference-Genre&highlight=War)And specifically it was this post (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=15995313&postcount=80). Thank you for pointing that out. Looking back to this comic, I now wish there could be a cross between Durkon and Rattrap which Elan could find gruff-but-lovable. Just shift all of the sarcasm over to Belkar's Dinobot.

Edit: I re-read the portion of that post for Thog and realized his alternate mode should be that green-and-purple tank Megatron became (http://transformers.wikia.com/wiki/Realignments).
