View Full Version : Help I'm going to Mexico!

While coming home from a family reunion, my mother told me I have 6 hours before I have to go to Mexico by boat for a "vacation". She bought boat tickets last august so I can't back out.

I feel like I'll either die or kill myself if I have to sleep anywhere other than my own bed tonight.

How do I deal with a surprise visit to a country I don't know that speaks a language I don't know if I'm already feeling suicidal?

Uhm, wow that sucks. How old are you? Do you still live with your parents? What do you mean you can't back out? Are you telling us your mom is guilt tripping you into going on a vacation?

Now I made the conscious decision to never ever go on a family vacation again. Depending mostly on your age and whether or not you want your mom to respect your wishes I'd advice you to RUN AWAY! Please note that Mexico may not be as bad as you imagine it to be, even though that would be exactly what my mum would say and she was always wrong about these things.

Also, please tell us if your seeing a therapist for that suicidal bit.

Mexico is not that bad. Sure the cops drive around in jeeps with machine gun mounts, but I have never been bothered. This despite walking around alone at night. I think the reports of its horror are overblown.

And unless your family is downright horrible, a family vacation cannot be worse than weeks alone.

Finally, if this is a cruise, go have fun. Cruise ships are essentially floating casinos. There are numerous diversions.

I think it absolutely depends on your age. If my parents asked me and my wife to accompany them on a vacation, I'd outright turn it down in a heartbeat, no well in hell would I want to spend a week or more cooped up with them with no way to get away from them and their incessant(well, my moms) "helpful advice". Now, when I was say...16 or so I'd have been fine with it, but not now that I'm an adult.

And if OP is already stressed out enough from the family reunion and they are suffering from depression, a vacation with his/her parents could very well trigger an even worse bout of depression and/or suicidal thoughts. My moms "helpful advice" is enough to send me into a downward spiral of depression by itself, a week or so where I have no recourse to get away from them(because even if I have my car, if I'm in another country where I'm not familiar with the roads, I can't really just get in my car and drive without fear of getting lost) would almost certainly cause me to start thinking darker thoughts as well.

Well, I assume Pelican is in Mexico now, so this is more of a mental exercise.

I wonder about a few things. Why is Pelican not saying "Yay! Free trip to Mexico! Woot!"

How old is Pelican? 8? 18? 28? What country is he leaving from- the US or another country? I assume he already has a passport to enter Mexico on such short notice.

If the tickets were bought in August, why was Pelican given 6 hours? As a parent, even with young kids, we would play up the excitment of a trip. Does Pelican have mental health issues and the mother (parents?) thought the trip was good but knew they couldn't give him time to think and panic? Some other reason as to why so short notice?

Was the reunion part of the problem? Is Mom running away so not to lose custody? Are they running drugs? Or coming to the US and meeting a smuggler?

I read too many mysteries...

His location says Sinnoh, and Google tells me it's a Pokemon map. So it could still be 8, 18 or 28..
Hmm.. I make for a horrible detective. Another childhood fantasy down the drain.

Let's see if I can do better.

Ok, their name is PelicanOfDeath and the pelican pokemon is Pelipper. It is in generation 3-6. Now, most people's favourite pokemon comes from the first game they ever played and the Sinnoh region is generation 4 which fits with Pelipper. It notably was the first pokemon game to come out on the DS and it came out in 2006 but released in places that are not Japan in 2007. It also hints it is not the newest game when they started playing. Admittedly, I say this because of personal experience, a pokemon few generations old is very cheap compared to one which just came out. I grew up on Pokemon red and blue despite it being quite old when I started playing pokemon because it was being sold at a garage sale. The mother was also able to tell the user they were going on a family vacation which suggests that they couldn't fake other commitments. Of the the three options of 8, 18 or 28 that firmly puts them in the 18 section. Probably a bit younger my guess is 16-17 though 15 is possible if a bit unlikely.

I would say just try to enjoy yourself though kind of late for that now. I know that hanging out with friends or playing games might be more fun for you but it is quite rare to get a chance to go on vacation with your family. It is good to do it now while you still have a chance. As a bonus there is a good chance you will remember this vacation much longer than anything else you would have done at home and memories will eventually be all you have left of your family when you get much older. Not being given warning sucks but beyond that this seems like a good opportunity.

Having been to Mexico, I think I can help

Many people there actually speak English, and it's not that bad. I went to Mexico for two weeks and it was amazing, but you can't go there and act like you're going to kill yourself. Believe me, you will find something in Mexico that you like, just forget about any negative thoughts you've had about it and go there with an open mind.

How spicy is food at Mexico, generally?

The food is spicy, but they don't make it extremely spicy. Unless you find medium Taco Bell sauce or salsa at restaurants spicy, you won't have a problem.

Not all food there is spicy, especially in tourist-heavy places

A tip, water is really bad for spicy foods. You want milk for that. Apparently, sugar works as well but haven't tried that.

"Don't touch your eyes after you touched chilli pepper" is a decent tip.

Living in the southwest all my life has led me to eat lots of spicy foods. I can honestly feel everyone's "pepper in the eye pain." I don't know how many times I've gotten serano in my eyes

I googled "serano" and got a wiki article on a transwoman biology researcher.

I found the pepper later on. Even lesser chilies sound painful when applied to the eyes. Eep!

I have gotten ghost pepper hot sauce on my eyes once. That was horrible. I have made sure to wash my hands after putting it in my food since.

Are you serious?

I only know about the pepper.

I did not get a biology researcher in my eye

The worst thing is, pepper-juice takes hours to properly get off your hands, even if you wash them well.
