I have been thinking of recreating a character I played in Neverwinter Nights for tabletop, and it occurs to me I might want to have a playlist for the character. This particular character was a barbarian/bard/red dragon disciple, so I'm mainly going to share what I'm considering for inspire courage, but feel free to make other suggestions.

Perform is a charsima-based skill, so any benefit I would give my character would need to come before activating rage. Inspire courage lasts for five additional rounds after the performance is heard, so I'm currently looking into songs for which a single verse or a single chorus might be appropriate before combat. Despite the title, there are lyrics in "Doubt" which seem very appropriate for a barbarian getting worked up.

I close my eyes
And tense myself
And screaming
Throw myself in fury over the edge
And into your blood

It wouldn't work so well if you were an instrumental bard, though. Does anyone have any suggestions for bard instrument pieces?

String Player Gamer's Megalovania Remix. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsDrWAXHTno) Best remix of that I've ever heard, by a huge margin.

Clash on the Big Bridge (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0JnXdfoYpY) or one of its many iterations.

Not instrumental, but I Burn. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=brshpJmOxu8)

The Hero. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YDjNfm6NNc) EXTREMELY apropos for an ubercharger.

Tengger Cavalry -War Horse (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icPhDK3PTqc) (Mongolian folk metal, so there isn't anything in English to sing along to. Doesn't stop it from being amazing)

Born This Way (Thousand Foot Krutch) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_jonkXbpo0)

Pain (Three Days Grace) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8HoTErxnWQ)

There's actually a surprising number of heavy metal songs that work, as surprising as that may be.

"The Curse of Feanor," by Blind Guardian, has a couple.

Taken the long way
Dark lands I went through
I arrived
My vision's so clear
In anger and pain
I left deep wounds behind
But I arrived
Truth might be changed by victory

Time and only time will tell us
Tell, was I right or wrong?
When anger breaks through,
I'll leave mercy behind

For an instrumental bard, the opening to "We Will Rock You" by Queen if it's percussion. Otherwise, Blind Guardian again; the instrumental opening to "Time Stands Still (At the Iron Hill)."

which is silly, metal, and fairly fitting in a fantasy world.

Murdertrain (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gnj3F7-DcQY) by the Foreskins from How I met your Mother. Just trust me on this one! lol. Very thematic. haha.

And, I also second I Burn (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?483128-Songs-to-Rage-to&p=20603175&posted=1#post20603175) from the RWBY soundtrack. lol. Although, I don't think the guys at the table would appreciate this rage music as much as me.

An interesting note, the Bardarian can actually use Inspire Courage in a rage, as well as other uses of Bardic Music that don't specifically require you to roll a Perform check. So you could keep on singing your rage song in rage.

Really, almost any metal band will do.

Have you heard some of the brutal stuff that comes out of Scandanavia? Black metal aside, Northern Europe has produced countless viking themed bands and songs.

If metal is not your thing, a good stomp your foot drinking song fits the bill. "Shipping up to Boston" by the Dropkick Murphys always gets me riled up.

I'm seeing a lot of metal suggested. That's cool, but I had thought I had done an adequate job soliciting pieces a bard could play with the instrument(s) likely to be available. Apparently not. Guess that's what I get for picking the vocals from a contemporary song as my first example.

Tengger Cavalry -War Horse (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icPhDK3PTqc) (Mongolian folk metal, so there isn't anything in English to sing along to. Doesn't stop it from being amazing)I can definitely see the opening to this getting some play.

An interesting note, the Bardarian can actually use Inspire Courage in a rage, as well as other uses of Bardic Music that don't specifically require you to roll a Perform check. So you could keep on singing your rage song in rage.But... perform still relies upon charisma, even if I'm not making a check, so shouldn't it be too complex to do while raging? :smallconfused: There's also the, "...or any abilities that require patience or concentration (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/classes/barbarian.htm#rage)," clause to rage which should exclude it since, "Some bardic music abilities require concentration, which means the bard must take a standard action each round to maintain the ability. (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/classes/bard.htm#bardicMusic)" Perhaps there's a spell or a feat out there which lifts some restrictions? So, it turns out page 73 of Unearthed Arcana specifies only fascinate and countersong as "off-limits" when discussing the possibilities open to a bardbarian, since those require a perform check. Patience and concentration don't come up, so while I guess it could still vary with DM... yeah, I'm going to have to think of my approach a little differently now.

Anything that doesn't...well, doesn't.

The classic choice, "An Angered Berserker" from Record of Lodoss War: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZH6aKq9w9o

For a quick display of utter dominance, "Epic Fire" by Brand X (from Queen Seon Deok): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZ-mUNncOlU

My favorite Barbarian theme, "It's the Fear" by Within Temptation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCvGwTWROJc

Hold down your head now,
just let me pass by.
Don't feed my fear,
if you don't want it out.
I fear who I am becoming,
I feel that I am losing all beauty within
I can no longer restrain it,
my strength it is fading,
I have to give in.

Here's the original, full Japanese version of The Hero. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TUTJ0klnKk) It might be better for you, I think. Warning: the vid contains spoilers for One Punch Man.

Anything Justin Bieber or Kanye West.

Just the thought of any god that would allow such music to exist would make me fly into the bloodiest of rages.

If you want a nice background song to evoke the proper feeling, give "Battlefield" by Blind Guardian a try. The lyrics and beat are very good.

In my 4E group, the barbarian player had a playlist of Manowar songs that he used during combat.

I'm going to give a bit of an old school response and suggest "Pop Goes the Weasel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzvuuUuvoIM)."

After all, Freeza said it just before Goku went Super Saiyan for the first time. Coincidence? I think not!

Gonna link this thread (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?486785-Songs-that-make-you-want-to-fight-like-a-hero). Good suggestions in it. Also, this post in particular (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=20738103&postcount=18), by some kind of mad genius.

Dawn of battle by Manowar
Thank me later

Fop all the crap Manowar gets for cheesiness and crotchless pants (understandable), plenty of their songs have just spot on, wicked atmosphere, for raging among other things.

More 'evil' ones like Hail and kill in particular hit the 'berserkr' theme of violence and cruelty rather well.

Edgecrusher by Fear Factory. It's actually about a prisoner in a dystopian cyberpunk-ish setting, but the music is heavy enough.

Conceived in hell
beyond your depth of perception.
Chaotic case
of conquering domination.
Psychopath snap
breaking chains of imprisonment.
A burgeoning force
that's undermining the government.

Anything by Archenemy for a butt-kicking female character, but Blood On Your Hands (https://youtu.be/33U3bGZOcX8?t=86) has to be my favorite.
