NY Times reveals shocking truth (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/30/nyregion/how-to-live-well-in-new-york-city-on-less-than-zero.html?_r=3):

Half the city’s 3.6 million households reported wages at or under the city median
Reporters never stops amusing me.

Honestly, my guess is that NYT's phrasing was meant as a sop to readers who don't know what a median is.

Funnily enough, it says 'median' instead of 'mean' or (gasp!) 'average'.

Just... what.

Honestly, my guess is that NYT's phrasing was meant as a sop to readers who don't know what a median is.

Reading the paragraph in question, I get the impression that the reporter was just using Clever Reporter Language (TM) to tell us what the city median is. Journalists' attempts to spin their language so that it'll sound more "interesting" often have this sort of confusing results.

Honestly, I can't even into math so..

It's probably just reporter lingo to make his really boring article seem interesting. :smalltongue:
