Hey guys. I have a quick question I need answered.

While leveling up a character of mine to level 5 (Fighter 3 / Rogue 2), the though occurred to me that I might be able to move 120 feet in a single round (at least once per short rest). Is this right?

Movement: 30 feet
Action=Dash: 30 feet
Bonus action (Cunning action=Dash): 30 feet
Action Surge (Additional Action=Dash): 30 feet

Total: 120 feet

Am I reading the rules wrong or is this possible? I'm guessing it doesn't come up very often but cool in theory nonetheless.

Sure you can do it. Have someone haste you, and you move twice that distance.

Wood elf 5' adds up in that equation. Mobile feat, too.

Well, I guess running 120 meters in 6 seconds is no longer impossible - even Bolt couldn't do it...

Bladesingers get another 10' to base, too.... 160' per round?

Also look at monk speed, barbarian speed and having a bunch of transmutation wizards in the party.

Bolt is a COMMONER! He's no hero, and I certainly wouldn't waste my money on a hireling with so few proficiencies.

Well... Feet and Meters is not the same you know ;)

Just for the sake of argument, what is the furthest one can move in one round, given one would build a character around that concept?

Wood elf fighter 2/ monk 18 with Boots of Speed and Mobile feat?

Movement: 35 feet base, (+30 for monk), (+10 for Mobile) x 2 (boots of speed that has already been activated previous round: 150 feet
Action=Dash: 150 feet
Bonus action (Step of the Wind=Dash): 150 feet
Action Surge (Additional Action=Dash): 150 feet

Total: 600 feet in one round? :)

Your for getting monks step of wind ability.

No, just forgot changing the name from cunning action to step of the wind... same thing though, as it uses the bonus action.

EDIT: I guess one could also take some levels (5?) in Barbarian to gain 5 more feet to the base speed.

Does Haste spell work together with Boots of Speed btw?

are we allowed to use spells in this exercise?

I guess we could probably do two, three or even four separate ones.

"Natural": Only abilities and feats

With items: Natural and items. Self-explanatory.

With spells: Natural and spells. Only spells you can cast yourself. No third party interference.

Free-for all: Everything above. The highest possible movement.

Don't forget that with the barbarian 5, you can take Elk for an extra 15 ft.

Longstrider can be grabbed with the Bladesinger 2.

right then.

wind walk sets your base move speed to 300. no concentration required.

You can also just ride a horse and have it dash for 120 feet without using any of your actions or other resources, aside from the gold for buying and maintaining it.

For the inevitable "no you can't": Look at PHB 198, "Controlling a Mount".

Obvious question:

What multiclass combination would net you the highest movement speed possible by RAW?

Off the top of my head, 10 Monk/5 Elk Barbarian/2 Bladesinger. +20 from Monk, +10 from Bladesong, +10 from Longstrider (through Bladesinger), +15 from Elk, +10 from Fast Movement. With 30 base, that's 95 ft movement, three times for 285 total. Sacrifice the +15 from Elk and take 3 more in Bladesinger to drop Haste on the 80 ft movement for 480 ft per round.

Back in 3rd edition, you could spend your whole turn sprinting in a straight line for x4 movement (or x3 if wearing armor or encumbered). With the removal of that option, 5e characters cannot run as fast as RL people.
