The 27 point buy system point can give you a variety of stat changes. Let's look at the top 10
Remember an 8-9 is below normal average ability, thus a negative adjustment ( do you want your hero to be a weakling, stupid , dim-witted, clumsy, sickly, boring ) it's your character
Don't forget to add your racial modifiers for what you want.
However if the dm doesn't ask you to roll play go for #1.
1. 15,15,15,8,8,8
2. 15,15,14,10,8,8
3 15,15,13,10,10,8
4. 15,15,11,10,10,10
5. 15,14,13,10,10,10
6. 15,14,14,10,10,8
7. 15,14,14,10,9,9
8. 15,14,13,12,10,8
9. 14,14,14,10,10,10
10.14,14,13,12,10,10

Having an 8 doesn't nearly mean you're sickly, dim-witted or boring. It means you're slightly less likely to recall a piece of trivia, slightly more likely to inhale a cloud of acid breath, or slightly less likely to entertain a crowd. You can still be a total Mary Sue.

Our group prefers to throw dice for stats. But if I have to distribute the points, my favorite combination would be this:

4. 15,15,11,10,10,10

The choice is simple when you go druid, this combination has no negative which is very good. Besides having two strong features for wisdom and constititucion, if I choose the Wood Elf class I get +1 wisdom which would leave me with 16 points with a modifier of +3, and +2 dex my third strong punctuation (11 to 13) land druid incoming.

Nothing bad.

A greeting!!!

for me it's usually either 15/15/14/10/8/8 for Vuman or 15/14/14/10/10/8 for almost anything else. I like to have my relevant stats as high as possible.

Half elf paladin. 16s starting in STR, CON and CHA. If I were to play it, I would put the 10 in WIS, but really it doesn't matter, I'd play that character all day.

How are you considering those the top 10?

Just for the record, here are all of the valid point buys that sum to 27 along with their total points. Sorted by most points. You'll notice the obvious, which is that the most equitably distributed have the highest point total. The OP's idea of top ten seems to come from the idea of having a few large stats (at most three) and maximizes them.

Half elf paladin. 16s starting in STR, CON and CHA. If I were to play it, I would put the 10 in WIS, but really it doesn't matter, I'd play that character all day.

I've been longing to do this one.

I love having one or two low stats. I enjoy power gaming a bit (what self-respecting adventurer doesn't?), but have been role playing more and more over time.

Low str is silly when you get in RP scruffles or try doing things you shouldn't and don't even bother rolling. Low dexterity can be entertaining if you bull in the china shop it. Low con, meh... The sick guy isn't worth saving; he might not make it anyway. Low int is frustrating, but can provide a lot of comedic relief. Low wisdom gets the party in over their heads in the most embarrassing of ways, but sets them up for heroic rebounds! Low charisma is one of my favorites. So many approaches.

I'm partial to human variant 15/15/14/10/8/8

I also really like
15/14/14/10/10/8
for the other races

Yeah variant human would be great with 15/15/14/10/8/8.

You'd start 16/16/14/10/8/8 with a feat. Most classes can afford to dump.

Starting level-1 Rogue with Lucky Feat, 16 Dex, 16 Con, 14 Wis, 10 Cha, 8 Int, 8 Str would be pretty strong.

The 15, 15, 15, 8, 8, 8 array is especially great if you pick a class that works well with just Con, Dex, and Wis, because those are the three most important saves. Something like an archery-based 12 Hunter Ranger/8 Assassin Rogue would work great with this array.

Agreed! Also, with the right feat/class, you can drop a stat by a point to free up two more build points. My favorite example of this is a human variant fighter taking heavy armor master at first level. Tank your way through the early mobs, often ignoring being hit in the face with clubs and rocks.

I prefer 6. For +1 and +2 races
