The Grand Cavalcade of Explorers is a vibrant celebration with plenty of food, drink, music, and dancing. Around the fairground, games of chance and skill have plenty of customers, and the activity around the merchant stalls is frantic. As holders of a Royal Charter, you were given a purple and red sash upon entrance, along with a small token that allows you free food and wine - nobody said anything about limits, and some of you are determined to find them!

As the party moves into its second hour, a loud trumpeting signals the arrival of Lord Mayor Ioseph Sellemius, the current elected leader of Restov. He enters as one might expect, exaggerated smiles and wave, shaking hands, saying hello, and generally behaving like a popular politician should. After only a few minutes of procession, he bounds up a small staircase to a stage. Nodding to a robed man, the Lord Mayor speaks, "Friends, citizens, and volunteers, is everyone having fun at this Grand Cavalcade tonight?" Thunderous applause and cheering gives him the response he seeks.

"Excellent, I am humbled by your gratitude." he exclaims with a deep bow. Standing up again, he pulls a small piece of paper from his pocket and continues speaking, "We come together today to celebrate a new chapter in our nation's history. A chapter of courage, decisiveness, and heroic deeds. A chapter in which no person can say 'the old days are gone'! No, friends, this chapter will tell the story of how we go into unknown lands full of danger, and not only live to tell the tale, but eradicate the vicious evil that dwells there! We shall be a shining light of honorable civilization into those lands of darkness!"

The crowd goes wild again, cheering loudly, with many chanting 'Restov! Restov! Restov!' The Lord Mayor heads that off, "Nay my fellow citizens, though I share your passion for our great city, we should not chant our own name, but those of the heroes who journey forth!"

He looks down at the paper in his hand and begins calling off names. Those called are ushered up on stage, shake the Lord Mayor's hand, then stand behind him. Soon, the people called to the stage have separated from one another and are standing in three distinct groups behind the Lord Mayor.

Before you have a chance to consider it further, the Lord Mayor is calling your name!

On the edge of the festivities stands a strong, attractive, albeit rather short, long haired man. He wears a green dragon scale breast plate bearing the Medvyed crest and is leaning on a long stick. Normally Kargian loves being out and about, dancing, singing, and drinking among the crowd, but recent news has led him to be a little more reserved today. He sticks to the edge of the crowds eating while keeping watch for anything that could possibly be deemed a threat.

He listens to the Mayors speech while continuing to keep watch, but getting a little anxious as the names begin being read. Hearing his name he excitedly cheers and raises his staff in the air and hurries up to the stage. He shakes the mayors hand with a wide smile on his face and proceeds to walk to the group he is directed to.

Kymark

Kymark Orlovsky, a burly man with practical short hair and beard. He is glad in oddly silver mail shirt, a red cape, a symbol of Sarenrae around his neck and carrying a greatsword. In many ways he seems a simple man at arms, but there is a fluidity to his movement and his piercing green eyes take in everything.
Kymark partakes of the food and drink, but unlike some in moderation. It seems the food merely nourishes his body, but it is the people who will be more. Others here will be his companions on his great adventure. His eye catches an unusual person who looks like a cat and he goes to move towards her.
Just then the Mayor calls his name. He was beginning to worry it was not going to be called. Moving up to the stage he bows and shakes the Mayors hand.

Standing a slender 5'8" and dressed in a comfortably worn, but snugly tailored outfit in muted greys, the figure in question is distinctly feline in form and function; sidelong glances noting her as one of the catfolk it seems, an unusual but not unheard of race in these lands. Furred all in black, she stands away from the main hustle and bustle of the celebration. fingering the gaudy sash that was her badge of 'honor' during this particular party and looking mildly disgusted with its need to be displayed.

Jade green eyes watched the passing figures while sharply-pointed ears flicked up, listening to snatches of passing conversations for any talk that might be worthwhile to note. As her gaze drifted, so did her thoughts, recalling the... occurrence during the past night. Her tail twitched sharply behind herself a time or two before suddenly stilling, a huffed breath exhaling her frustrations. Glancing up again, she padded with a quiet grace towards one of the wine stalls, picking up a glass and letting the flash of her palmed token quiet the vendor's protest. Letting herself lean against the side of the structure, the figure sipped at the drink, finishing it just as the first blast of those trumpets rung through the air.

Setting the glass down, she moved to the periphery of the gathering crowd, listening as the Lord Mayor began to speak and just barely hiding a cynical smile in the process. Noting the three groups already formed, she gave each of them an appraising glance before she found her own name being called. Eschewing the stairs, she leapt up onto the stage proper, nodding to the Mayor and offering all of the correct, polite noises in turn. Finished with the pleasantries, she moves back, noticeably forming a fourth group and waiting to see who else may have been called.

Dressed in red robes and an armored coat, with sickle attached to her belt, Nicolette is an attractive young woman of an average height, currently drinking in the corner. She would look even more attractive if she didn't seem so uneasy among the crowd, like a bird in a cage.In fact there are some things about her that feel almost birdlike, certain ways she moves or few scale-like scars visible on exposed parts ofher head and neck. There is also something odd about how she sometimes looks like she is listening to somebody who is not there. Which she is, as spirits talk to her all the time, nagging her, calling her, whispering her name, Nicolette, Nicolette...
She almost doesn't realize when her name is being called by the mayor. She quickly raises her hadand walks to the place where rest of the group is. re those people who will help her fufill her mission? With these peopleshe will create kingdom for humans and Orcs alike? Have she misunderstood the spirit's calling?
No, the spirits were clear. She is here with a higher purporse and these people will help her achieve her goal.

Byron was never a fan of crowds, too many people with the possibility of a person carrying a very sharp pointy knife and a vendetta rising as a crowd grows bigger. Instinctively he finds himself on the fringes of activity keeping to himself and trusting that his old chain shirt, hidden by his brown cloak, would protect him against any would be assailant. As the mayor begins to read off names from his list Byron runs his hand through his messy short brown hair anxiously. His eyes darting about the assorted festival participants praying that when his name was called that those with vengeance in their hearts might be far away. "Byron Ironside!" His name blasted out by the Lord Mayor, and for a moment Byron hesitated, considering what he was about to do and the life he was about to leave behind, but such thoughts only delayed him for a moment before he slowly trudged forward. His eyes ever vigilant on the crowd and the group he is directed towards.

Leithbridge wanders through the cavalcade marveling at all manner of people congregated in one place. His sun kissed bronze skin took on a rich luster in the firelight accenting his golden eyes. Finding himself in front of a wine stall, he takes up a chalice of the southern red from the bemused vintner and raises his glass in surprised amusement to the exotic feline figure leaning against the stall.

The fanfare of the mayor's entrance is a bit quaint but it plays to the audience at large, so he obviously knows his constituents. Three groups are called and Leithbridge has yet to hear his name called. The levity is quickly fading from his countenance as five others are called to make up a fourth group. At the last, the name 'Leithbridge Gravenhurst' rings out over the crowd. Immediately regaining his composure, the nobleman strides forward, the sheathed dueling sword bouncing on his hip and bespoked courtier's outfit rich shades of brown to match his hair, mounting the steps two and three at a time before crossing over to his father's acquaintance. Giving a courtly bow to the lord mayor before rising and engulfing his hand in both of his own, he widely grins as he accepts the cheers of the amassed revelers.

Moving to the others in the fourth group, he smiles as he proffers his hand to each of them in a spirit of camaraderie.

Kylarra, keeping her expression reserved, considered each of the other figures as they were called and mounted the stage in turn. Dragonscales and a staff, a druid, mayhaps? Having one of Nature's allies with them could be a boon, indeed.

The next figure she considered more carefully, spotting the oversized sword slung there. Her eyes narrowed a moment, picking out the symbol worn around his neck. A servant of the gods, or simply a religious man? It was worth further thought, in either case.

The third, one of the few other females she'd seen adorned with the red sash, seemed scatterbrained at best, which worried her. In the Stolen Lands, everyone would be needing to pull their weight if the stories out of that region had any truth to them.

From the fourth figure, the immediate feeling she received was nervousness... this one had something to hide. While she could sympathize, she knew equally well that this could be useful... or a threat. Best to find out soon.

As the last member of their group was called, the feline let out a throaty little chuckle, her muzzle dipping in a moment of acknowledgement from where she'd spotted the man earlier. A decent taste in wine, and he knows how to work the crowd well enough. Hmm. She gave him a firm grip, in turn, keeping her claws well sheathed for the time.

As the last of you gathers on the stage, the Lord Mayor turns back to the crowd and begins his prepared speech. His droning voice gives you time to look around and take in the other groups on the stage.

To your left is a group of men dressed in the latest Restovian fashion – all wear dueling swords, fine garb, and wear enough jewelry to feed a small family for a year. Standing to the side is the leader of the group, Meagar Varn, a Swordlord of the city, and the oldest son of a noble family that has seen its reputation and influence strengthen over the past few years.

Beyond them is a group of wary men and women wearing all manner of clothing and armor, except each bears a black tabard with a gray sigil in the center. You remember hearing them being called the Iron Wraiths, a band of mercenaries known to have fought in the Mendevian wastelands, and to have escorted archaeologists deep into chaotic Iobaria. Their leader is not readily apparent.

The last group stands to your right, and their leader stands out like the sun in a clear sky at noon. Baron Hannis Drelev wears golden plate armor more appropriate for a museum than a battlefield. A purple cloak hangs from his shoulders, and moves slightly as if being blown by a gentle wind, despite the still air around you. Behind him are six soldiers standing at ease, all wearing colors of House Drelev and bearing swords and shields likewise emblazoned.

From your raised vantage point on the stage, you clearly see a number of Town Guard slowly and unobtrusively filing in around the Cavalcade perimeter. They do not have weapons drawn, but they are armored and carry heavy shields.

As you continue looking around, you notice a buzz from the crowd, and you realize the Lord Mayor has stopped talking. He stares straight ahead into the distance, slowly shaking his head back and forth. A moment later, he drops his head, then raises it again.

”Friends, I have just received terrible news. A great tragedy has befallen our land… Our Regent, Noleski Surtova, was seriously injured in an accident. Despite the efforts of everyone involved, the Regent did not survive.”

He pauses for the crowd’s reaction. Cries of alarm and dismay ring out, and many faces are etched with worry. Ioseph continues, ”Given this horrific turn of events, the House Council has asked all citizens of Brevoy to observe a period of mourning starting tonight. Unfortunately, we must ask everyone to now leave the Fairgrounds and return home. We will have barkers spreading official news on the morrow. Now please, return to your homes, and may Erastil watch over you and your families.

As he finishes, the Town Guards begin moving into the crowd, encouraging people to gather their belongings and leave the area. Most people start heading toward the exits, though a few of the more inebriated patrons are given an official escort.

With the Guard clearing out the common folk, the Lord Mayor steps back from the edge of the stage where he is joined by three other men who begin whispering together in hushed tones. The other groups on stage have moved toward the staircases leading down.

[roll0]

In a stroke of luck, the three of you happen to be looking down into the crowd when you see something very unusual. Four people have pulled wands and are now approaching the stage, all staring at the Lord Mayor and his advisers. These people appear to be commoners, and do not appear to be part of a noble House or government agency. {Each of you gets an action. The people are approximately 40' away from you. Please respond in spoilers or via PM to me. Thanks!}

A steward hurries over to you and begins ushering you toward the exit. He seems to be extremely shaken up by the news of Regent Surtova's death.

Taking notice of the heavily armed soldiers moving into the cavalcade, Leithbridge looks first to the group of duelists then to the mercenaries and next the baron and his retinue before looking to his own group. As all are seemingly unaware, Gravenhurst takes the lead in his group, nodding his understanding to their assigned steward as he amiably links arm with the man and begins jovially rambling. His gait at half his normal speed slows them both down and keeps the rest of the party behind them to give distance between them and the next group.

Byron, immensely regretting not bringing weapons to a social function, would move to use his body as a human shield if the commoners draw wands on the Mayor, after all what better way to redeem himself then by saving a possibly corrupt politicians? Otherwise if that's not an option he would attempt to rush the commoners and try to disarm them.

Byron would move to follow the other groups off the stage, after all the death of a major politician meant little to him in the moment, but at the foot of the stage's stairs he pauses noticing his groups hesitation.

Events begin to happen in rapid succession near the stage:

One of the Lord Mayor's advisers looks up to see four men raising wands at the group. He screams "Assassins!" just as his voice is drowned out by several others -

Nicolette uses her knowledge of hidden paths to call forth a Giant Centipede in the midst of the group which attacks one of the assassins, tearing into the man's chest!

Byron rushes forward to shield the Lord Mayor from the assassins' attacks!

Kargian creates a cloud of obscuring mist which effectively hides everyone on stage from the assassins' view!

One of the assassins pulls a dagger from behind his back and slashes at the giant centipede, scoring a small hit.

The other three activate their wands, sending balls of fire hurtling at the stage!

One of the fireballs shoots out of the top of the mist, exploding well away from any targets. The other two head straight into the mist and explode in the center. As the mist clears, you see one adviser on the ground, another wobbling, and an angry looking Lord Mayor who appears little more than singed.

The centipede writhes amidst the grasses but remains free, grabbing one of the assassins and digging into his shoulder drawing a loud cry of pain from the man.

Kymark and Kargian rush to place themselves between the assassins and the Lord Mayor.

Kylarra nimbly leaps off the stage and charges at the struggling assassins. Leighbridge follows close behind, moving a bit slower, but no less determined toward the assassins.

The free assassin begins sprinting away, sending another fireball at a group of guards then yelling, "For King Surtova! He will be avenged!"

Two of the entangled assassins escape and move forward, the taller one engages Kylarra, the other throws a dagger at the Lord Mayor. The tall assassin swings at Kylarra, but misses wide. The other's aim is hampered by Kymark and Kargian in the way, and the dagger sails over the Lord Mayor's head.

The last assassin attempts to free himself, but fails in his attempts, remaining entangled.

A loud pop sounds out and a gust of wind blows down on the stage as three blue-robed men wearing medallions bearing the Seal of Restov appear in the air directly over the Lord Mayor who looks up and raises a hand. One of the men reaches down, touches the Lord Mayor, and they both disappear. One of the other robed men points a wand at the fleeing assassin. A black bolt of magic lances out, hitting the man in the back, dropping him to the ground in a crumpled heap. The other robed man points a similar wand at the assassin who threw the dagger. The bolt hits him in the chest, and he also falls limply to the ground.

Nodding as you arrive, he looks at the other flying man for a few seconds before returning his gaze to your group. "Hands, please." he states as he moves his hand toward you. Waiting until each of you has placed your hand into the center on his, he moves his other hand within his robe, which emerges a moment later holding a strange stick with a black box on one end. He touches several small circles, and the world vanishes.

A breath later finds you inside a room with light gray stone walls, floors, and ceiling. Three open doorways lead out of the room. He drops his hand, then pulls a small bottle from inside his robe. Offering it to Byron, he says, "We have to walk now, this will revitalize you."

{{19 points back}}

After Byron takes the potion, the man motions for you to follow him as he moves through one of the doorways. You walk down a wide hallway containing doors every twenty feet or so on both sides. A thick carpet runs the length of the hallway, and small globes of light on the ceiling provide illumination. He stops beside one of the doors, presses the black box several times, then opens the door and enters. The hallway continues as far as you can see beyond the door.

The room beyond the door is entirely different than the hallway which you just exited. The floor, walls, and ceiling are dark wooden planks. A rough stone fireplace with a roaring fire is on the far side the room. Several plush chairs and sofas all face the fireplace. A long table on the right side of the room is covered with food and drink. A staircase leads up to another floor on the left side.

The man waits until you all enter, then closes the door behind you. He walks around to stand beside the fire and waits for you to seat yourselves.

"Again, thank you for your assistance. I am one of the Five Elements who protect Restov and its leaders. I am known as Wind, but for now, you may call me Idehm." {{Id-e-em}}

"Since you have involved yourselves, I want to share some information with you. These assassination attempts have been happening throughout Brevoy for the past four nights. A number of powerful nobles have been killed, including the Regent, and his sister. To our knowledge, none of the assassins have been caught alive until tonight. We do not know who is behind these attacks, or their motives. We do know that the assassins have been attempting to implicate others during the attacks - as you heard during the attack we faced, one of the men yelled about Regent Surtova. We will of course examine that lead, but we do not expect any truth to be found there."

"Brevoy is quickly descending into chaos. Houses have sealed entire branches of their families inside safe locations. The capital of New Stetven is under martial law, as Restov will be starting tonight. The situation is grim, and getting worse. Until we, or some other organization, find out what's really going on here, a major disaster is fast approaching. Though there are some who would love to see a Civil War break out in Brevoy, I tell you, such an event would be disastrous for noble and commoner alike. None would emerge unscathed, and in all likelihood, the entire country would lay itself bare for conquest by one of our more militantly-inclined neighbors."

"I tell you all this so you have full knowledge of what is happening as you prepare to leave. Your charter asks you to explore the lands and create a new map of the region. I urge you to do so, not only to ensure we have a full picture of lands to our south in case war breaks out, but also for your own safety. Your involvement tonight was surely noticed by someone affiliated with these assassins, and the longer you remain here, the longer you are in danger. In the morning, I will give you several days head start on any who would try to find you. That should be enough time for you to get lost in the Stolen Lands. Hopefully, your disappearance will provide us with enough time to find the people behind these attacks. By the time you resurface, your aggressors will have been captured and rendered powerless."

She gives Nicolette a touch of a nod, as well, though. "Personally, I consider that could be a possibility. Other powers may well not want Brevoy expanding into those lands, and causing this level of internal strife would make it easy to draw eyes and plans inwards."

Idehm looks at Leithbridge, "Your immediate family is safe. They have not been attacked, nor have any of your extended family here in the city. Your cousins in Brevoy, however, have lost nearly a dozen so far. The Duke was attacked, but he survived and his attackers were killed. Most of those lost were young adults, like you. I do not have a list of names with me, but I can get one for you. My sympathies."

He glances at Nicolette, "Indeed, I would be surprised if he has not already started providing information. Your spell was most helpful. As for the conjecture on the agitators behind this plot, it would not be beyond some of our neighbors to send assassins against us. What truly surprises us is the killing of the Regent and his sister. They were, after all, protected by the most powerful magic in the land, surrounded by some of the most experienced warriors in Brevoy. The expense to hire just those two assassins would have been staggering."

Idehm raises his hands, then lets them fall back to his sides. "The answer is a 'maybe' for the time being. A poor answer, I know, but it is all we have at the moment."

Hearing Kylarra's statement, Idehm nods in agreement, "Indeed, you are correct. We have to end these attacks and restore the population's sense of safety and security as soon as possible. I, and the rest of the Elements, are turning our entire organization to that task."

"And if the source of these attacks intended to force Brevoy into a defensive posture, then they have succeeded."

Nicolette didn't have much to add. She was instead trying to take a step back and reconsider what they have already learned. Could it be connected to the vision she saw? To the warnings given by the spirits? She remembered words she deciphered not so long ago and decides to repeat them.

"
Small warlords blocking the path
Ware the thorns grown in hell
The green lady comes, loves, kills
One road leads to peace, all others to death"

She goes silent, then notices everyone are giving her weird looks and she probably should say something more.

Ibehm pulls out his black box and presses a few of the sides in rapid succession. Stones around your feet begin to glow and you all begin to see a distinct circular pattern emerge on the ground that was not apparent only a few moments ago.

You blink and your surroundings have changed. Instead of Restov, you are now in a small clearing in the middle of a copse of hardwood trees. The air is cool and humid, and thick gray clouds hang low in the sky.

Ibehm looks around, then gestures, The road is about half a mile in that direction. That's north." He turns and points to his left, "Oleg's is about a half day's ride in that direction." It looks like plains to the south of us and forest off to the west and southwest. Anyone more knowledgeable than I please speak up, but wouldn't it be easier and faster to survey grasslands than forests? I mean, it's relatively flat out here and anything approaching us should be easy to spot. Plus the riding should be good without trees and underbrush slowing us down. If I am looking at this correctly, we could head for some distance before circling back and skirting the forest line until we make it back to Oleg's. That should take a good month and we might have gathered enough to have somethings worthwhile to trade. It is also a good opportunity to get some experience under our belts in surviving the wilds and working together before heading into deeper waters as it were. What do all of you think?"

{{What you know: Oleg’s Trading Post occupies an old military fort. It was briefly controlled by humanoids in the area until a group of Brevin soldiers on patrol discovered the monsters and drove them out. Oleg heard about the vacant fort and petitioned Brevoy to move in and repair the damage, with the understanding that he would be supported by a small squad of soldiers to help protect the area. Oleg’s request was approved, and he moved to the fort with his wife, Svetlana. A squad of engineers and soldiers accompanied them to help with repairs. The soldiers left last winter and headed back to Brevoy. Another squad was scheduled to be sent in early Spring, but the chaos in the country has delayed their departure.

Oleg and Svetlana are humans in their late 40s with ties to several merchant houses, and a loose affiliation with House Lebeda. }}

You travel north as Ibehm directed, and sure enough, find the trade road as expected. The road itself is little more than a cleared path of packed dirt, but some effort has been made to keep it free of large rocks and shrubs. The land around the road has also been cleared for around fifty feet, giving travelers some comfort from any bandits or monsters who might try to ambush the unwary.

The road is relatively straight, and as you move along its length, you look to the south into the Greenbelt. The gently rolling plains continue as far as you can see. Plants largely consist of tall grass and the occasional shrub. Small clusters of hardwood trees dot the landscape, but they are few and far between. You see birds flitting around, and hear a few avian cries from the tall grass, but no other wildlife makes an appearance.

After a few hours of mindless travel, Oleg’s Trading Post comes into view about a mile ahead of you. Situated at the top of a small hill, the fort offers a commanding view of the road in both directions.

The wooden fort is rectangular with a wide gate on the north side. The wall around the fort is ten feet high and consists of round poles or trees lashed together. Four square towers sit at each corner that rise another five feet above the wall. You can also see four single-story buildings inside the fort, two large, and two small. There is also a wide open space inside the fort where some sort of activity is taking place.

You notice two things that strike you as slightly unusual, both sides of the gate are open, and you can make out around 10 humanoids milling around the interior.

{{everything from the DC 15 spoiler, and …}} You can make out the glint of steel on some of the humanoids, so armor, weapons, or both. They do not appear to be wearing similar uniforms since you see different shades and colors. You also see a flag flying from one of the towers – a white stag centered upon a red field.
You do not recognize the flag as being from any authority, country, or organization. Whatever it represents is totally unknown to you. The traditional meaning of the flag is something close to “peace through strength.”

Loathe as I am to say it, I think we are best served by waiting for darkness to scout it out. I am subtle and light on my feet, but not trained in scouting or burglary. The guard stares at your group for a few seconds before shrugging. ”Come in. Keep your weapons covered.”

He leans over and rings a large bell a few times, then turns around and leans against a large level. As he pushes, one of the gate doors slowly swings open.

You enter an open courtyard and directly across from the gate is a long low building with a single door and several large windows. To your left is a stable containing a few horses. On your right is a smaller building with square windows.

From inside the Post, the walls show their military construction – rough, but sturdy. But you also note that the two towers you can see appear to have several cracked timbers. While the walls would be strong enough to hold off determined attackers, a young child swinging a stick might be able to breach the towers. You also see what appears to be a disassembled catapult on the ground near the long building. Far across the yard is a large covered pit surrounded by ropes and warning markers.

Five men exit the long building and head in your direction. The one leading the group wears leather armor and has long black hair. He casually holds a longbow and wears a quiver on his back. His allies all carry crossbows, though none aim at you. While is it obvious they know how to use their weapons, none but the (presumed) leader appears to be very proficient.

As he gets closer, you also notice he wears a green bandolier with several marks across it. At the top, near his heart, is a replica of the green flag that flies over the Post.

He stops and looks over the group, ”You lot don’t look like traders, so visitors, eh? Well, if you need a place to sleep, the guest house is 1 gold a night.” he says gesturing at the small building with square windows. Pointing at the stables, ”Horses can go there for 3 silver a night. Meals are on the sixes, 2 silver a bowl. Nothing fancy, but it’ll fill your belly. Water is free, well’s behind the long house.”

”And see that roped-off area back there? Don’t get over in that – was a refuse pit for a while, caught some big rats over there. Hate for anybody to get bit; filthy bags of disease can kill you with just a scratch.”

”Any questions?”

His voice rises slightly, and he is no longer smiling, "So if you're asking me if the boss gave Oleg what he had coming? Truth is, I don't know, but between you and me, he deserved everything he got!"

Happs raises his hand slightly, and points at Kymark, "And you didn't answer my question. What was your business with Oleg?"

Inside, sitting on one of the bunks is a woman in a large brimmed, pointed, blue hat wearing clothes covered in various pockets and buckles, many seeming sowed on haphazardly, combing through two small books. Both old and weathered, but one seems more like a journal, while the other is a small gilded book attached to a chain. Looking closely under the hat, you can clearly see the half-elven woman with long white hair with an intent look in her eyes. Next to her on the bed is a sheathed sword, a haversack, and its contents, now spilled out.

Shaking her head, Kylarra led her mount off to the stables, unloading her gear before taking her time in grooming and getting the animal settled. Hefting her pack up, she then made her way to the bunkhouse, swinging the door open and padding inside.

The figure that enters is slim and feline in shape, a dark-furred catfolk female dressed in snug leather and mithril, draped by a concealing cloak. She draws back the hood, showing off sharp and tufted ears before she settles her pack in an open area, giving those already present a curious look and a nod if any gaze finds itself directed her way.

"Hi there", a soft, light voice says, coming from a corner of the room. It belongs a a young woman, even a teenager by the look of her. With a slender frame, striking eyes of a very pale blue color, long, silver hair tied in a pony tail, she hails the newcomer with a somewhat shy smile. She's clad in a leather jacket and breeches that feel a little to wide for her, and around her neck is a small, wooden medallion, carved to resemble a mask of brown chestnut leaves. She looks at the newcomer with an air of undisguised curiosity.

On the top of one of the bunks inside sits a young elven woman. She is sitting on the edge of it and absentmindedly kicking her legs back and forth. She is dressed in a light cotton dress, seemingly ignorant to the cold mornings that the season bring. There a couple of newly bloomed flowers woven into her long white hair. Her lips were pursed, as she contemplated her dilemma with the Charter.

Her thoughts are interupted by the arrival of the two newcomers. She looked down at them. A human, the poor little thing, and a very fuzzy looking woman. Evelyn looked down at her travelling companion, the stoat that was currently curled up beside her and napping "they taste fresh"

She addressed the room nonchalantly, examining the tips of her claws for a moment before directing her gaze briefly towards her companion, expecting she knows his answer already.

Newcomers to the fine Greenbelt, totally devoid of banditry and suspicious goings-on? Jon Green, at the service of all goodly folk, though I suppose if that means at your service remains to be seen!" He gives a brighter laugh, nearly shaking the walls.

His frizzy read-brown beard would impress a dwarf, his cheeks are round and ruddy, his unrefined peasant features open and guileless. He holds a wide-brimmed tan at his side. A broad black belt overtop his blue coat struggles against his girth, the coat covering the light mail beneath. A walking stick is in his other hand, solid oak and worn smooth from long use. His boots may once have been tan, but are so patched and travel stained that one can't be sure.

Her arm raised high, a large, oblong ball of orange fire engulfing her fist, she moves a few steps forward, in full sight of the crossbowmen.

"Dropping your weapons would be a wise thing to do", she calls out calmly to the guards. As if to underscore her advice, a huge bird of prey appears overhead, and begins to circle, high above the pit. It is an enormous bird, its wingspan at least as wide as a grown man's height. Vallen rushes toward the stable. Jon and Kymark move with him. Jon unleashes nature itself as vines and weeds leap up to grab at the guards beside the pit. Both manage to evade the spell, but they are met by the charging Kymark who swings but narrowly misses one of the dodging bandits.

Veyraan casts a spell that wreathes her fist in fire, then commands the bandits to stand down.

Unfortunately, they apparently have some backbone, as they begin to counter-attack. Both of the guards on the ground drop their crossbows, and move out of the entangle spell* while pulling shortswords. They both swing at Kymark but their blows clang harmlessly against his armor.

The two guards on the wall fire their crossbows, one at Jon, and one at Kymark, but neither shot comes close to its target.

A harsh voice calls out, "Eh, what's happening up there?!" You all recognize the voice belonging to Happs, but he is nowhere to be seen.

Grobec flies down and slashes at the bandit with talons, but the man avoids the attack.

Veyraan throws a ball of flame at another bandit shooting a crossbow, but the fire is easily dodged by its target.

Jon calls out to Kymark, then continues singing his strange song. Apparently in response, massive trees shoot upward from the ground, then commence swinging their branches at one of the bandits who goes down under a near-blinding flurry of limb and leaves.

Kymark, startled by the sudden growth of the trees, as well as his now increased size, overextends his attack and misses his opponent.

Evelyn rushes into the guest house to gain some cover while casing a spell.

Vallen sinks an arrow into one of the bandits and calls out for them to surrender.

Kylarra and Gweyr remain inside the building, watching the bandits who have already surrendered to make sure they do not join the battle.

The bandit hit by Vallen’s arrow drops his crossbow and clutches his shoulder. It’s clear he has no more interest in fighting today.

The other bandit on the wall near the pit swings his crossbow at the roc, but misses his target.

The bandit over the gate launches a bolt against Vallen, striking him in the side {{dealing 4 points of damage}}.

The bandit beside Kymark looks at the tree-puddle that used to be his ally, then at the 10’ tall form of Kymark. Making perhaps the most intelligent decision of his life, he calmly drops his crossbow, then puts his hands on his head.

Happs calls out again, ”What is going on up there? Where did all these weeds come from – is one of you playing around with those scrolls we found?!”

{{You’re up again. A couple more surrendered, but there are still a few fighting back!}}

"Seems you lot knew what you were doing, good." Cracking a feline smile, and peering with some interest at the apparently newly-grown trees, she padded over towards Happs and the pit, gesturing with her clawblades towards the former. "Right. Just come on up out of there, we've got a few more questions for you. Kymark? Why don't you see if Oleg and his wife need some help."

Shaking her head at the bandit, she narrowed her slitted eyes. "So, what's the deal, Happs? You think you and this lot could just roll in here and lay claim to everything?" ... Of course, that's what they were sent to do, too, but she doesn't let that little detail trouble her too much.

A small lantern illuminates this area, but you almost wish it was dark. This is no refuse pit, it is a torture chamber. A large bear lies on the ground, shackled by its neck and paws to a spike driven deep into the wall of the pit. The creature has a number of fresh wounds on its sides, legs, and head. Most of them appear to be burns - likely caused by the heated irons lying in the coal brazier near the ladder. On the far side of the pit is an older woman seated on a wooden chair. She grips the seat with both hands at her sides, almost rigidly, refusing to move. Tears stream down her face, and her mouth opens in surprise. Seeing the two of you, she lets out a small cry, but still she doesn't move. She looks at the bear, then back at the two of you. Her voice cracks as she speaks, "Please, save my husband. Saying they were representatives of a new land, and a new lord. But we had never heard of them - we were part of Brevoy. They were helping us, or supposed to!" she spits the last part.

"But Brevoy abandoned us. These bandits accepted our hospitality, then broke into our house during the night. Nearly killed Oleg, and threw him down here. Discovered his secret."

She looks at Kymark, somewhat defiantly, "He's cursed, you see. His form is that of a man, and a bear. He can control it if given the chance, but the animals that did this didn't let him. They started conducting their "tests" on him. He heals up faster than normal men, so that Happs said that he wanted to figure out how it worked. Forced me to sit and watch - making sure Oleg knew that if he resisted, Happs would start hurting me somehow."

"You're obviously not part of Happs' group, but who are you?"

The other bandits look downcast as they listen to Jon. One of them suddenly shouts, "Hey now, I just got here yesterday! I don't know what's happening, I.. Despite repeated inquiries, Happs remains silent except for the occasional (and quite rude) "playing his butt horn" as he calls it.

The bear seems to be groggy, but it manages to nod its head before falling asleep after Gweyr speaks to him. In a burst of energy, the woman leaps up from her chair, rushes over and wraps her arms around the bear's head, settling in and refusing to move again until he awakens.

The rest of the bandits are brought into the stables for interrogation one by one. Between Kymark, Jon, and Veyraan, they seem to get a good sense of the thugs and the part they played in the capture and torture of Oleg and his wife.

-----

Bandits 1, 2, 3, 8:
All of these men are long-time bandits who have been with Happs for at least a year. They have committed many crimes, and are set in their ways. They would say anything, including betraying and blaming one another, to save themselves.

Bandit 4
You cannot get a good read on him. He has only been part of Happs' crew for a few months, so he hasn't committed the crimes of the more experienced bandits, but he's by no means innocent. He knew what was happening with Oleg, and if he could escape, he would almost certainly return to his criminal ways.

Bandits 6, 7
Both of these young men (barely - almost boys) have only been "bandits" for a few weeks, and they just arrived at the Trading Post three days ago. They joined up because they were hungry and destitute, and being a bandit gave them food and a few pieces of copper. Both of them are from a village far to the south - it was destroyed a few years ago during one battle or another (they aren't sure), and they fled into the wilderness. The crimes they have committed are simple battery and theft.

Bandit 5
This bandit refuses to speak much, and it's clear he is on the downward side of being very, very drunk. If allowed to live through the night, his hangover in the morning would likely be more punishment than hanging. During questioning, however, Kymark notices something: a tattoo of a longbow on his right bicep. It is very ornate and intricate, something that one would only receive after joining an organization, or committing to a cause. The bandit simply covers it up if mentioned, and refuses to speak of it.

You recognize the tattoo as something given to rangers and guides who were trained by the church. This man was, at one time, a servant of Erastil and an excellent survivalist, tracker, and explorer.

{{OOC: None of them detect as evil. The number of other bandits range from 20-100, but the truth is probably somewhere close to the middle. The bandits have at least one camp a few days south, then another about two weeks south near a large lake. The camp by the lake is actually an old stone castle that's been claimed by the Stag Lord as his capital, and it's heavily guarded. A small village has started to grow around the castle (< 100 civilians). The only information you get about the Stag Lord is that he is a master of the bow, and he is a man, but with the head of a white stag with huge spreading antlers.}}

Bandits 6 & 7 should be given a chance if they wish to redeem themselves, we can see if they have a trade or maybe help them start a farm or the like under us. The would have restrictions of course.

Well drat it all. This is very inconvenient. What do you suppose we do with the lot? Hanging is a grisly affair, but I don't see us being able to ship them back to Brevoy either. "All right, ladies and gentlemen, let me tell you where I stand here. I believe most of these bandits deserve a harsh punishment, while a couple of others, such as you mentioned, Kymark, could likely be redeemed. But I don't have any authority to enact justice. The two younger bandits rise and follow Vallen to the guest house. Both of them have a haunted look about them, as if they aren't sure if they are reall awake, or if they're trapped in some kind of nightmare. One of them quickly wipes away a couple of tears.

The rest of the bandits appear sullen in defeat, except for Happs. For some reason, he exudes confidence. It's almost like he knows something that is a secret from everyone else. Throughout his questioning, he freely admitted to his crimes, but all of them were twisted ever so slightly to make Happs seem like a victim, rather than an aggressor. Sure, he was torturing Oleg, but that was only because he was a ravenous monster. Sure, he made Oleg's wife watch, but that was only because she had to be shown her husband's true monstrous form! The double-speak and deflection of anything remotely close to responsibility is almost too much to handle.

In the pit, the woman holding Oleg glances up at Gweyr. "My name is Svetlana, and yes, I am Oleg's wife."

She pauses a moment, then continues, "I only met Oleg a few years ago, but once we spent time together, neither of us wanted to be with anyone else. We moved around quite a bit searching for a new home, so I've only met a few of his friends. May I ask their names?"

Gweyr, finished with the lock, frees Oleg at last. "Well, it's good to be formally introduced Svetlana. They were Adolamin Swordhand and Krisa... Falconsomething. I never really asked mom about her family name, but I think my dad has something written down in his journals. Anyways, lets get the two of you out of here." She begins flipping through her father's book. "The invocation should be in here somewhere... Oh, there we go. I'll send you out first, and then Oleg right after. Should give you enough time to let them all know we're okay down here, and that Oleg is well..." She pats Oleg's fuzzy head a bit. "You know."

Svetlana's eyes flicker at the mention of Gweyr's parents. "Oh! Oh my, Oleg has mentioned them many times. They were traveling companions, yes? Well, this is certainly a change in fortunes." She says with something near relief.

At Gweyr's offer, Svetlana shakes her head. "I'd rather stay with Oleg until he awakes, especially since he's not shackled any more. I'd hate for him to wake up and not know he's been freed by friends. There might be trouble. No worries though, I'm fine."

She pauses, then continues, "But I tell you, I could really use a glass of wine. Any chance you or one of your friends could help with that? I've got some bottles hidden in the hay loft, glasses in the main house. It's just... been a really long day."

So saying, Gweyr notices for the first time that Svetlana's face has started to show severe exhaustion. A glass of wine might put her fast asleep.

Most the bandits simply scream and yell, hurling obscenities at Kymark and the various others around them. Many struggle against their bonds, but they fail to escape. None offer anything close to repentance.

After the rest of the bandits have had their say, Happs speaks up. With a wide grin, he says, "I'm curious though, what makes you think we're just bandits? See, all of us are part of the Stagvald military, every one of us. I'm a Captain, the rest of the boys here are sergeants and privates. And you know what else, we've declared war on Brevoy, sent an official letter and everything."

"So you see, we're not bandits at all, we're soldiers. And you've caught us fair and square. But you don't just execute soldiers during wartime, do you? Oh no, you have to keep us contained, but healthy, right? Isn't that how the civilized nations conduct their wars?"

"Unless you lot just don't care about that. In that case, execute away - but you'll have to live knowing you committed war crimes against soldiers of a legitimate foreign nation."

Happs leans back and grins, confident that his words and accusations are enough to save his life.

As the three enter the room, Vallen closes the door behind him and seats both men down on one side of a table. Drawing forth a piece of parchment, he seats himself opposite them and begins to write dutifully. Should either of them speak up about what he is writing, his response is already prepared: "The end of your lives."

Finishing his writing, Vallen lifts the page off the table and inspects his wording. Nodding his approval, he reverses it and slides it in front of both bandits. Four long lines stretch across the page underneath his words. "You are both young. Too young to have your blood on my blade, yet too old to escape judgement. This paper," Vallen taps on it insistently, "marks the end of the life you have created for yourselves since the loss of your village. From now on, you are to be apprenticed to Oleg. Much was taken from him, and the true culprits will find their lives ending in a more permanent fashion."

Vallen rises and retrieves another document from his pack, this one worn from both weather and age. A large symbol of a scale marks the first page and he solemnly runs his hamd over it. "I am a member of an organization known as the Order of the Scales. It is our burden, duty and passion to ensure justice, true justice, is afforded to everyone. In this instance, it means granting you both a second chance at a life worth continuing. There are four lines on this page; four signatures necessary to start these second lives. The first, and most important, are your own. The third is mine to sign, " Vallen does so with a flourish, placing the quill between both men. "and the fourth is for Oleg, should he agree to accept you both.
"Do not take this offer lightly. It is as much a lock as it is a key. You are accepting to work under Oleg's sole guidance. Your future, whatever it may be, will be shaped by his hand and by your own actions. And should you feel like breaking this contract," Vallen's face darkens as he rises and leans over the pair. "It is a sacred rite of my order to know when an agreement has been broken and to ensure justice is done."

The remaining arguments die on his lips as Evelyn's spell takes hold. Happs falls asleep amidst several others. The remaining ones begin to struggle, but their efforts are sorely lacking as only seconds pass before they too become targets for Evelyn's power.

The two younger bandits quickly get the point of Vallen's offer, and they both sign their names on the lines as indicated. Neither speaks much, but Vallen isn't sure if that's because they are awed at the opportunity to start over without resorting to banditry, or if they are just now realizing that all of their former allies are going to be executed for their crimes.

Either way, the two are compliant and seem willing to obey Vallen's directives.

Gweyr quickly locates glasses and a bottle of wine for Svetlana. Gweyr returns to the pit and Svetlana quickly pours some, then downs almost half of it. "Forgive me, this must look terrible. I actually don't usually touch the stuff, but after all that's happened, well, this seems like something to celebrate... and then forget." she says the last part a bit quieter.

Svetlana looks up at the top of the pit, then into her glass. Raising her eyes, she speaks in a slow voice,

"Your parents know Oleg, and you've come here, and ended up saving him from what was going to be his death. But you seem surprised to see me - I can understand why. See, Oleg and I were together for years, then we lost touch. We both went our separate ways, but we eventually found each other again."

She takes another sip, then continues, "Oleg is from a family that is cursed to have another form. Over time, they have learned to control it. I have a similar gift, but mine is not so much a curse as it is a part of who I am. My family serves those you know of as fey - and we are able to change our shape into several creatures, including that of a human. Oleg and I found each other, and as you might imagine, accepted the other despite our differences. It's not easy to find another person to love who knows what it is to live as an animal."

She drains the little remaining in the glass, "I tell you this to help build trust. You are the only the second human I have revealed my secret to, and I do so out of respect for what Oleg has said about Krisa and Adolamin. I leave what to tell your friends to your judgement."

"Now, let's wake this oaf up."

Svetlana begins stroking the bear's head and snout, and the creature slowly begins to stir.

While this was being taken care of, Kylarra re-entered the main building and began to search, looking in particular for where Happs may have set up an office or held court.

After searching for a few minutes, you locate a small journal that has several entries apparently written by Happs. The entries are mainly about cargo and coin being shipped south to a place called Stagholme. Roughly, shipments have been happening every month or so, and in fact, there is an entry from yesterday with details about the furs and treasure leaving on a wagon. Future dates have also been recorded, confirming the monthly visits.

There is also mention of a woman named Kressle. She is apparently the leader of the camp to the south, and the entries make her appear to be both psychotic and depraved.

You also find a small red and blue wand.

-----

Several hours after the bodies have been buried, Svetlana asks to speak with the group.

"First, thank you again for helping us. I honestly don't know how much longer we would have lasted. But the danger isn't over yet. I know that Happs and his band were only a few of the bandits in the south. I don't know what your plans are, but I know that they were setting us up for monthly visits for cargo - I don't know if that's going to continue or not, but I thought I should mention it. They also set some kind of alarms outside. Happs had a wand or something he used to turn them on or off, but I don't know where it is now."

"That said, if you mean to eliminate the bandits, I think there are a couple of people you should meet. There is a strange man who lives about 10 miles away in a hut all by himself. Name of Bokken. He has visited a couple of times, seeking to trade potions for food. He's by himself, but he knows the area. Another person you should visit is Dreyton, he's a hunter and trapper. He was one of our best traders before Happs came, but the last time he was here, they took his goods and threw him out without paying. Letting him know that Happs is gone should be a priority - Dreyton's word carries weight among the other trappers and hunters. He usually works the forest west of here."

She looks at the two former bandits, "About these two, that's up to Oleg. If it was up to me, they'd hang."

"But like I said, that's up to Oleg. Now, if you folks need some supplies, you're welcome to take whatever you need. Is there anything else I can do for you?"

"I've seen them myself, yes.." she nodded, flicking one tufted eartip before drawing a slim, red and blue wand from one of her pockets. "This might be what you're looking for. I found it, along with a journal, in Happs' belongings. It noted that the last shipment left for 'Stagholm' just recently, so we should have nearly a full month before any disruptions in the schedule would be noticed."

She offers the wand to Svetlana, and then continues: "It also mentions someone by the name Kressle, as leader of the southern camp. Does that name sound familiar at all?" She taps the book with a clawtip, looking thoughtful. "Nasty customer, it sounds like, even to Happs."

When Kylarra produces the wand, Svetlana nods, "That makes sense. I've seen Happs use that in the morning and at night. That's when they said the alarms were active. But I never saw him actually use it, so I can't help you with it."

At the mention of Kressle, Svetlana goes pale, "That woman is not of this world. Someone of such cruelty and anger can only be from another place, far beyond the realm of mortals or fey. I've seen her..." She shakes her head as she stops speaking. Slowly, she continues, "Her rage is terrifying. I watched her torture one of her men she accused of theft. He lasted days. I overheard her later, laughing with Happs about how she had accidentally miscounted the bottles of wine. There was no remorse or regret, she enjoyed what she did to that man."

She looks at the group, "She is hate and insanity made flesh. But I also have to wonder, who or what could command respect from such a degenerate monster? Who leads this Stagvald, and what kind of monster are they to accept someone like Kressle in their service?"

Svetlana has a few questions about the garden, but she is soon puttering around, examining the plants, harvesting a few here and there, but generally simply enjoying herself. She seems to have made a remarkable recovery from the horrors of Happs and his crew. Or perhaps she has just chosen to push away those memories until she can deal with them in another way. At the least, it seems that she is in good mental and physical health.

The discussion about which direction to go is settled quickly. Bokken, the hermit who lives 10 miles away is your first stop. You all gather your gear for the journey, and Jon grabs a couple of large sacks containing salted meats.

Neither Svetlana nor Oleg want to use the wand, so while they are happy to watch it for you, they won't be activating the alarms. Something about reminding them of their prison. Vallen dismounts Dúath swiftly, continuing forward with the reins in his hand. His hood and hair are pulled back, leaving the pointed tips of his ears prominently displayed. The mark of his order on his chest shines in the hints of sun that peek through the trees. He looks to his companions and flashes a quick smile; it's easy to see how much he enjoys this. Vallen turns to the hut and begins to slowly walk down the path towards it. His voice carries softly over the breeze, with a hint of laughter.

"Well met Bokken! The day shines bright and true and we should like to join you for a time. Word of your kindness and knack for potions has reached our ears by way of Oleg and Svetlana, who send their greetings. We have food aplenty and would be honored to share our table with you, as it were. I cannot promise it is as good as Svetlana's kitchen would produce, but good company especially can be hard to come by in these dark times."

Kymark

Kymark gestures towards his companions. "This is Vallen, Evelyn, Kylarra, Jon and I am Kymark." Kymark bows towards Bokken.
"We are here to bring peace and order to this land under a Charter from Brevoy. We have freed Oleg and Svetlana from the yoke of bandits who are apparently associated with Stagholm which has our attention now."

"Oleg and Svetlana wanted to lt you know they are open for business and no longer under their control."

Evelyn stood near the back and rested on her staff. She was perfectly content to let the men do the talking, since they seemed to have everything in order. She smiled as she idly noted just how animated Vallen was while he was leading the proceedings. The man seemed to have a talent for making friends anywhere, even in the middle of nowhere. She raised an eyebrow in bemusement as Kymark neglected to mention the last two members of the group. And Veyraan and Gweyr she calls out.

"Good morning!" Veyraan adds cheerfully, ignoring Kymark's forgetfulness of her, but making a wink in Evelyn's direction. "We heard you're a great man with potions, and know the land well..." She leaves the sentence unfinished, but by the look on her face, she's eager to hear the man's reaction.

Eyeing the clouds overhead as the group rode in, Kylarra scowled briefly, then decided that, for once, the weather would cooperate. As they arrived, the feline woman dismounted gratefully; horses never really found her a comfortable burden for some reason. Letting Kymark and Vallen speak, she remained a watchful presence in the shadow of the trees.

The door slams open, and for a moment, everyone is positive the battered wood is going to fly apart from the impact. By the grace of some power or miracle, the door remains intact, allowing the old man to exit the hut. His face takes on a fearsome expression, and he raises his withered arms. His mouth contorts in strange ways as he begins making sounds only heard in nature - leaves rustling in the wind, a running stream, rain falling on the grass...

But after only a moment, he freezes, listening to Vallen's speech. Without lowering his arms, and without changing his expression, his eyes dart around, looking at each of the speakers in turn. He finally starts glancing between Kylarra and Gweyr. Waiting a moment, he finally speaks in a deep strong voice, "What, nothing to add?"

Dropping his arms, his visage becomes one alternating between squinting, exaggerated sniffing, and muttering.

"Right then, I'm Bokken. This is my place. It's a good thing you're not bandits, or I'd have turned you all into plants like those guys over there!" he points generally toward his left. He glances over, and seeing nothing there, continues, "Um, looks like they migrated. Creeping figs, can't trust 'em to stay put. Hate it when that happens. Next time, it's stay-in-one-place holly bushes!" he yells at nobody in particular.

Spinning around, he smiles and addresses the group, "So you've got food, eh? Well, what kind of potions do you want?" He quickly raises a hand, palm aimed at Vallen, "Hold on, I'll stop you right there, lover boy! I don't care what you and the horse have going on, I don't do any love potions! Or any not love potions either! Too dangerous, might spill a drop or two when I make it. I spent a winter fighting off a randy squirrel, and lemme tell you..." His eyes take on a haunted look, and he shudders, "Um, no, I don't think I will."

Bokken's eyes move to land on Kymark, "And what's this Stag-thing you mentioned?"

Evelyn stared at Bokken with a soft, bemused expression as he ranted. His strange mannerisms weren't off putting to Evelyn's Fae disposition, since she herself wasn't too concerned about complying to social norms. However, when Bokken spoke ill of Vallen, Evelyn's face darkened like a winter storm. Hey! Evelyn snaps at Bokken That... Evelyn was flustered, and she wasn't terribly proficient in wordplay. That wasn't very nice!

Vallen turns and winks at Evelyn to show that no insult was given, before facing Bokken once more. "The food is our gesture of good will. Good food for good company, as I said." Leaning down towards Dúath, Vallen's lips whisper out a quick command as his hands retrieved rations. The hart bowed slightly to Bokken before walking slowly back to the tree line to stand with the other mounts.

"I do hope we haven't interrupted your day."

Kymark

Kymark smiles at the old man. "The bandits that had seized Oleg's claimed that they were in league with some stag lord or something. This seems to be true based on Svetlana's information as well. We plan on going after them once we have informed some people that Oleg's trading pot is open for business."

Hey! Evelyn snaps at Bokken That... Evelyn was flustered, and she wasn't terribly proficient in wordplay. That wasn't very nice!

Laughing softly, the feline woman padded forward, tailtip curled in amusement. "But all the more fun for it." She nodded to Bokken after a moment. "I do not think we are in any great need at the moment, but we had heard from Svetlana that these bandits had been troubling you, as well. It's our intention to remove them from this area."

Bokken gives Evelyn a lop-sided grin, "Oh, he didn't mind, and neither did his steed. Beautiful animal, by the way."

"And no, Master Vallen, you did not interrupt my day. Good thing about living out here, the only schedule I keep is my own. And I have given myself permission to interrupt myself whenever myself wishes to do so!" he says while gesturing repeatedly at his chest.

At Kymark's response, Bokken grimaces, "I've heard of this Stag Lord. Supposedly from around these parts, from the western forest. Be interested to know how he got the name though. Doesn't seem like something his momma gave him."

He looks at Jon, "Well, the lands have been more active than usual. Guess its these bandits. There is the kobold tribe to the south. Don't usually bother me, but they've been mighty quiet lately. Hope they're not getting themselves into trouble. Then old Nettle usually stops by a few times each year, but I haven't seen him in a while. Runs a ferry to the southeast. As for a map, I can probably scrounge up something."

Bokken goes back inside and tosses a few things around. He returns a minute later with a worn map of the region. Holding it up, he says, "We're here. Back this way is Oleg's, and here's the ferry. The kobolds live around here." he points at each with a gnarled finger.

He holds it out for Jon, then smiles at Kylarra. "I wish you luck, but people have been trying to remove the bandits from these lands for generations." Bokken holds up his hands and shrugs. "I don't doubt your intentions, but I hope you understand my reservations. But you helped Oleg and Svetlana, so I'll be willing to do my part if you need me. I know the lands around here, and something about the magic that flows through this area. If you discover anything unsual, or if you come across something that you don't understand, let me know and I'll be glad to help."

{{OOC: I'm working on a regional map for the Shared folder, should have it up tomorrow or Friday.}}

{{OOC: The ferry is about 30 miles to the south, and the kobolds are another 10 miles beyond that. I'll also be uploading overland travel rules in the Shared folder with the map.}}

Jon takes the map, looking to over carefully. "Most helpful, most helpful indeed. Thank you. Svetlana mentioned to us the name of Dreyton, a local trapped out the other side of the trading post. Do you know anything of him? We considered introducing ourselves there next."

Holding out one hand, Vallen offers Bokken a share of his rations and takes a comfortable seat nearby (stump, fallen tree, large rock etc.). After taking a bite, and following it with a healthy pull from his waterskin, Vallen's voice deepens into a more serious tone.
"We are happy to see you doing well here on your own, though others have not been so lucky. What have you heard or seen regarding the trader Dreyton recently? We heard that the same men who accosted Oleg and Svetlana also relieved him of his wares and turned him out."

Bokken shakes his head, "Don't know any Dreyton, but then, trappers and hunters don't come around here much. I'm fond of the animals around here, and well... they aren't so fond of them, what with the killing and the skinning and the eating." he grumbles a bit before continuing.

"But if you're heading over to the forest where most of those morons spend their time, best be careful. Something has stirred up the creatures there. Had a bunch of my friends head over this way leaving the forest. Something's messing with the balance in there, I've sent some messages but haven't heard anything yet. If you do go over there and you find anything that may point to what's happening, I'd be very thankful. Like a couple of love potions thankful... or their equivalent in others if that works better."

{{OOC: Anything else to ask Bokken? If not, he gives each of your a potion of healing for the trades and wishes you luck.}}

Vallen nods at Bokken's words. "You are lucky to have the friendship of so many creatures. I must admit, I have not been as fortunate, beyond Duath. Should we cross the paths of your friends, how can we show that we are your friend? And then, how can we get a message to them or from them? I fear the animals remaining in the forest would flee any man's presence for fear of hunters."

Vallen is offering to help look out for Bokken's friends, but hinting at needing two things. First, anything that would identify them to the woodland creatures as a friend of Bokken. Second, a potion or other means of communicating with the animals.

Seeming to have calmed down, Evelyn directed a question at Bokken. Do you know if there are any Elven ruins in the region? It's part of the reason I came this far south.
