View Full Version : Help me build a Gun-fu build for Pathfinder

I am currently playing a Savage technologist barbarian//unarmed swordsage in the current game. It's cool, it's fun, it's pretty strong and I'm very happy about it because it does everything I like - it punches pretty well and shoot while doing so and most important it is completely viable even without a gun.
The problem is that I am using a lot of cheesy things to make this build work. First off we are using both 3.5 and pathfinder, the DM is letting me use the "Sword and Gun" ability with my unarmed strikes, we have 2 flaws and we are allowed to use any core and third party book, I rolled 3d6 for my stats and they are pretty much over the roof because I'm a lucky son of an Orcus - in our group everything is legit, we play by the rules usually but like in the "Sword and gun" example we can make some exceptions. Everything is legit till the character stay a character and it doesn't turn to be a meaningless build, we don't play with numbers on a sheet but with characters capable of having good roleplay potential.
BUT! I said "what if I want to play in another game with my character?" I won't because I love my group but what if in the future (an alternative future) I will be forced to play with strict rules like fps rules? I don't want to play another shabby character, I love this one and I just don't want to play something else, I just want to say "Hey maybe fun can be legal sometimes".
So how do I recreate my character with fps rules?
She is an Elan, Dex based, absolutely chaotic neutral and with a passion for raging in combat (so I'm not considering lawful monk-y builds), capable of using guns with unarmed strikes obiously but being pretty good even without a gun

Could you clarify what you mean by "fps rules," please? That plus the phrase "alternative future" make me think you're looking for a character for a setting where you want the techslinger archetype (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/base-classes/gunslinger/archetypes/paizo---gunslinger-archetypes/techslinger).

I mean strict rules that are usually used in Society games, like I said we use too much cheese in my group and I want to make this character full pathfinder legal (playing with a 3.5 class is not that legal)
With alternative future I mean I'm not going to join one of these games right now, I just want to rebuild my character to make it viable just with pf stuff. For fun I guess?

Oh, Pathfinder Society. My initial thought was first-person shooter.

I did some searching and found this thread (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?411111-The-Gun-Fu-Man&highlight=firearm+monk) which had the start of a build, but that attempted to combine two gunslinger templates which cannot be combined. Monks also came up in this firearm ranger topic (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?430494-Firearm-ranger&highlight=firearm+monk). The dagger pistol (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/equipment---final/weapons/weapon-descriptions/pistol-dagger) was mentioned in that, which makes me think that the swashbuckler hybrid class (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/hybrid-classes/swashbuckler) could be useful, though I don't think it would let you parry and shoot.

I could go with the Savage technologist and go with a Cestus but 1d4 it's not much for a brawler build. The damage from the current build I'm using is good just for Shadow Blade though

Unarmed strikes with a sword and gun are totally legit. An unarmed strike is always considered to be a light weapon.

If you wanted to make it PFS legal, just be a martial artist monk. It gives you the unarmed strike damage without the alignment restriction. Also be aware if you shift alignment, monks don't lose any powers or abilities, you just can't gain any further levels in monk. So you could grab your powers and be done. Monk works better with gunslinger for a wis synergy.

Or as you suggested, just go brawler/savage tech. Savage technologist is basically like gunslinger-you can leave it after level 5 when you get dex to damage, although it is tempting to get more rounds of rage and totem powers where gunslinger offers little to nothing after level 5. Going brawler also lets you dump int and still pickup a lot of combat feats with the stupid int 13 prerequisite.

There's also the Mystic (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1AtQz8XFrmiBFJxjcatyiodJjo3FebF-WzFOh3XfEDtQ/edit) with the Gunsmoke Mystic archetype. I'm playing it in one of my current games and it's pretty neat. Downside is that I'm not sure Path of War: Expanded has been released yet, so I'm not sure how that interacts with PFS rules.

Maybe just "unarmed fighter" fighter archetype with firearm proficiency? It's not like you'll be hurting for feats...
