http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/scrolls.htm

A 7th level scroll costs 2,275 gp

A simulacrum scroll costs 7,275

7,275 - 2,275 = 5,000gp

d20srd says only 1000xp is included

1xp = 5gp

1,000 * 5 = 5,000gp

5,000 - 5,000 = 0.

Simulacrum needs 100gp and 100xp per hd, 1,000xp simulacrum requires 1,000gp, but the cost of the scroll is only 7,275 not 8,275. There's 1,000gp missing! Is this an oversight or does this mean simulacrums' material components are not in the scroll? Does this extend to Ice Assassins? Does this mean you have to cast simulacrum at a piece of a creature, and you can never create a Scroll of Simulacrum of ___?

When a general rule disagrees with a specific rule, the specific rule wins. Since the price listed for that specific 1000 XP scroll is different from the price given by the general formula, there is a disagreement, so for this particular magic item, we ignore the usual formula and use the more specific listed price.

A Simulacrum scroll with any other amount of XP would still be subject to the general formula.

This is probably not the intended behavior, so it can be considered a minor dysfunction.

At first, I was going to say that this was an srd vs rsrd issue; however, upon further investigation, I discovered that the listed price does not match 3.0 simulacrum, either. In 3.0, the spell had a flat price of 1,000 xp and 100 gp.

So I would call this a typo, just like Daern's Instant Fortress dealing 10d6 points of dawizard.

As to the concept of a scroll of simulacrum of _______, that just seems silly. It would be cheaper to just buy a simulacrum of _______ at spellcaster services prices. No sane Magic Item Wal-Mart would ever carry such an inefficient item, as no properly min-maxed adventurer would ever want one. :smalltongue:

I don't think that the material component would be 1000gp minimum; just 100gp per hit die. There's no listed minimum. The listed minimum is only for the XP cost.

Ah, so you have to provide your own powdered ruby and your own creature clipping? Makes sense.

EDIT: And your own rough hewn ice replica.
