How does one MAKE a shield guardian? I was thinking that a discarded amulet, which takes 1000 gp of materials and 1 week to make, would be good loot, but what if the players want to make their own?

Well, you see... A mommy SG and a daddy SG who love each other veeeery much get certain urges...

Since you're the DM, you decide. But it should come with some cost that the PCs can only bear so many times. Otherwise you risk drowning in SGs.
You could go the golem way, and require a manual.

Looking at older versions of the game, the cost to create one is quite exorbitant : Shield Guardian (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/shieldGuardian.htm)

You could also add that the amulet must be attuned to function.

alternately, last i checked you can true polymorph a rock into a shield guardian. at which point you just need to make a control amulet, the cost of which is outlined in the shield guardian entry.

however, that *may* have side effects including angry DM, rocks falling/everyone dying, vengeful gods, the true polymorph spell ceasing to exist in your games, spontaneous insertion of extra words into various spells, liver failure, and death.

please consult your DM to find out if true polymorph is right for you.

This. All of this.

Once you can cast 9th level spells a Shield Guardian may not be sufficient to protect you against typical threats. :smalleek:

Maybe not, but it can buy you a little time, do chores for you, stand watch, and carry your crap. :)

how about a shield guardian for every week in which you didn't need to use your level 9 slot at least once? potentially 1 per day if you have minions that can make the amulets (you could arguably planar bind some arcanoloth or something like that into doing it, if you have a method of summoning them).
