Well I'm brand new here and thought i would contribute before I steal. While i am not certain that this has been done before I thought it up and think it is kinda nifty. After the adventurers finish smiting everything that moves they found a small amulet with a round red gem on the front, magical but on it's own pretty useless. Twist the gem 180 degrees and press and a +2 dagger will slowly materialize, 360 degrees with turn it to a +2 longsword will replace it. Turning the gem back and it will disappear.

In the production stage but I like it.

Price? Since it slowly materializes, is it a full-round action instead of the normal standard action to use a magic item?

All in-all, its a neat item.

Full round yes, no price or anything as of yet. And thank you, it is useful to say the least.

Sounds like something created by a wizard. Turn it one way, and have a weapon for himself to use. Turn it a bit more and you have one for your body guard. Much easier to carry than the full size things.

On a technical note, shouldn't it be turn 90, then 180? Unless when you say turn it back, you mean in a reverse direction.

Sounds like could be handy for bringing weapons into a city, or other restricted place.

Except for the lack of price I like it. As Gwyn_ap_Nud said, it's great for taking weapons into restricted places.

Just a couple questions. What happens if the dagger/sword is destroyed? Will the amulet produce another one? And if the amulet is destroyed while you wield the dagger/sword, will the dagger/sword continue to exist?

Depending on how you answer my questions the price may change.

Nice one.

Can it be designed to carry any other small-large weapons? Like...

kukri-scimitar
punch dagger-shortsword
shortsword-bastard sword
longsword-greatsword
handaxe-battleaxe
battleaxe-waraxe
waraxe-greataxe
club-greatclub

etc...?

Into restricted places? one use.

Me? I'd use it for trickery. sell someone a long sword then...ooops, gone. Oh, where you in the middle of fighting? my bad.

add 20% to gloves of storing since it does not take up a normal spot for those. so about 11,000 GP.

It only uses 2/5th's of a pair of gloves of storing, so I think the price is fine.

What are the baldes made out of? Are they normal steel? Some sort of energy? It's a pretty nice idea. Other versions could be made with more powers. Get item for a thief or assassin who needs to appear unarmed.

I'd say the specifics of the weapons are determined at creation. I'd also ad-hoc the price of this +20% after the unusual spot for Gloves of Storing because it's an unusual item and would probably be uncommon or have to be made to order.

I can see a couple abuses of this item though I do like it.

First this is a perfect way to rip off merchants. I can sell the dagger or sword wait 3-4 days while I ride out of town and then turn the amulet again and I've got the weapon back.

I'd probably add that the weapon either disappears if it leaves the amulet owners hands or that it creates an obviously temporary magical sword/dagger.

Maybe the Amulet becomes part of the weapon? Perhaps the hilt of the weapon, so you just have a blade materialize out the end of the amulet. If the weapon requires a two handed grip, then it's extended between the amulet and the blade.
