Welcome to Nar Shaddaa
Nar Shaddaa is the largest moon of Nal Hutta. More commonly known as the 'Vertical City', the 'Smugglers' Moon' and 'Little Coruscant', Nar Shaddaa is similar to Coruscant in that its surface has been entirely overgrown with city sprawl for millennia. But unlike Coruscant—which is only relatively rundown and dangerous on the lower and under levels of the world city—Nar Shaddaa is filthy, polluted, and infested with crime everywhere. Nevertheless, or perhaps because of this, Nar Shaddaa has become the most important financial and trading center of Hutt Space. It's visible buildings glimmer with huge neon signs advertising everything you can think of, and several things you have never heard of.

You're told as you step through customs that you should make for one of the higher (and therefore relatively safer) sections of the urbanized moon's vertical city, the Duros Sector and the Corellian sector. A taxi ride later you are in the Corellian sector, a vibrant district of bars, restaurants, nightclubs, workshops, traders and shady dealers. A little overwhelmed but keen to explore, you wander into the Lucky Lotus Casino looking for some entertainment. It looks relatively small as Nar Shaddaa's casinos go but is none the less a lively establishment that seems to have attracted a varied clientele.

At the bar, you exchange greetings with the bartender, a taciturn male Aqualish. Your enquiries about potential employers in the area leads him to gesture over a Twi'lek who introduces himself as Tal'ohen, majordomo to Jemba the Hutt, owner of the casino. Tal'ohen goes on to explain that Jemba is a young Hutt who has only recently moved to Nar Shaddaa and is hoping to expand his operations. Jemba recently acquired two freighters and is looking to crew them. He's also interested in contracting "security" and anyone else who might have "useful talents".

"I am authorised to offer you 500 credits a week as a retainer and 10% of any profits from cargo runs. Jemba provides the ships and capital so the risk is his not yours. Other jobs ... shall we say ... that might depend on what's involved."
He looks pointedly at you, "So ... you interested?"

You're aware that this is a reasonable offer when dealing with Hutts, especially given the number of potential employees on Nar Shaddaa, but you might be able to negotiate an increase

[streetwise] "I've dealt with plenty of Hutts before, Tal. Don't let my youth fool you. You and I both know he is lowballing this offer. Twenty percent, on top of the 500 credits, and my services, as well as anonymity, are yours".

Nyx gestures the barkeep over. "Jogan Fruit Brandy, please". She smirks at Tal'ohen and says: "So , do we have a deal?".

Tal'ohen takes a breath but composes himself quickly then steps back to look you over more closely.

Meanwhile, the barman arrives with your drink. He hovers nearby, waiting for payment perhaps but you sense a different sort of interest also.

You're suddenly aware of a hulking presence moving along the bar behind you. A quick glance over your shoulder confirms that a heavily armed Weequay also seems to be taking an interest in the conversation. He notices your glance and grins back at you.

"It's ok Roda," says the Twi'lek, "Just business."
He turns back to you, "Now my friend, what were we saying?"
He sizes you up, taking note of the wicked blades at your hips, "Perhaps 15% and 600 credits a week, especially if you don't mind keeping an eye out for trouble while you're here. And don't worry about the drink, first one is on the house .. for friends."
"Do we have a deal?"

"Don't threaten me with a good time, Roda" she chuckles, as she faces the Twi'lek.

"You have acquired my services, and my discretion, for your generous offer. Tell mighty Jemba that he's got himself a new associate. Name's Nyx, by the way, thanks for the drink". She chugs her brandy and toasts in Roda's direction with the empty glass "Be seeing ya, big guy'. Nyx turns back to face Tal. "So,tell me about the miscreants that you'll have me watching over". Smiling coyly as she says it

Roda nods in your direction and fades into a dark corner of the casino. For a big guy he seems to move quietly.

Tal'ohen clears his throat and continues,

"Nyx?" he pauses slightly like he recognises the name though you get the sense that he can't quite place it. "Roda there is Chief of Security. In here you answer to him. Over there .." he gestures towards a booth where you can make out a human female and a humanoid droid in conversation ..

"...you'll find Byen and her pet droid. She's a pilot we contracted yesterday. You probably spotted the guards when you came in .." he gestures towards a couple of Gamorrean guards at the entrance and two others standing by the back wall overlooking the sabacc tables ..

"...thick as a Rancor's skin but they have their uses. There's a few others and they take it in turns. Damned if I can tell 'em apart though. Roda probably can. Sysen the bartender you've met but don't expect to engage him in a conversation on Galactic politics, if you take my drift. There's a few others who contract on a part time basis and who might drift in and out."

"As for work, Jemba's keen to start moving into the big time. Not as patient as most Hutts but he's well connected. He needs a few more specialists so if you sit tight for a day or two we should be able to round up enough scum and villainy to get underway. The clientele in here can get a little rowdy as you'll see later when the shifts change. If you can keep an eye on things and flash those blades occasionally, the boss would appreciate it and you'll go some way towards earning your bonus. For now, make yourself at home, there's bunks upstairs where you can stow your gear, door's in the back."

Nyx raises an eyebrow at the Twi'lek's reaciton to her name. "I'll make sure things stay under control. After all, that is what you hired me for". She looks around the casino. "Guess I'll go take in the lay of the land. If you need me later, I'll be around here, mingling with the guests". Nyx gets up off the chair and heads off into the crowds of the casino.

While going through the casino, she gets the urge to do some gambling. Unfortunately, there really aren't any credits lining her pockets currently, so she decides to do what she knows to do best when it comes to getting credits. Taking them out of other people's unsuspecting pockets. Nyx attempts to find a mark that is out of sight and is slightly unaware, and picks his pocket:

Roda notices you loitering with intent and wanders over while you're casing a likely looking mark busy at the sabacc table and totally oblivious to your presence.

"Nyx, a word if you will" making it clear that 'no' isn't an option. "The boss won't be impressed if you start taking down the patrons. There's nothing Hutts like more than profits, and patrons with no money are poor gamblers."

"If you want something to do, how about you stow your gear upstairs then stand guard on the door. I'd like you to take charge of Thogk and Thruk over there .." he gestures to the Gamorreans on door duty "shake down anyone who looks like they might be coming in to cause trouble and check any obvious weapons. Work shifts in the district are about to change and things get busy in here then. Busy enough that someone might get hurt. Jemba doesn't like that. The mess can be expensive."

Sorry, one success just wasn't cutting it but you do get the sense that you've been sort of promoted, if you can call bossing around a couple of smelly pigs a promotion.

OOC: When new players are ready to post, feel free to go right ahead, we'll hold off on any other new posts till someone else drops in. Unless Sinte feels inclined to add something about being on bouncer duty

Later that day ..

Is it evening? Hard to tell, it always seems dark on Nar Shaddaa, and that's not just a question of available light ..

The Lotus is buzzing with activity. The dance floor is packed and a live band is playing while wait staff move smoothly through the throng, taking orders and delivering drinks and snacks

From the casino proper comes the steady clatter of gambling machines and the throng of gamblers at an assortment of tables and machines all busy being parted from their wealth.

New arrivals are being greeted by a young but deadly looking young woman accompanied by a pair of massive Gamorreans. Obvious weapons are being confiscated and carefully cataloged.

At the bar a male Aqualish and two young human females are busy taking orders and pouring drinks. The Aqualish pauses every so often to growl at one of his co-workers, both of them and the waiting staff all seem terrified of him.

New arrivals following tips off about possible employment (OOC: that's PC's who haven't yet joined the IC forum) are ushered into a backroom office to meet with a well dressed Twi'lek whom introduces himself as Tal'ohen. A heavily armoured male Weequay leans nonchalantly against the back wall watching you.

Tal'ohen explains that the casino is owned by Jemba the Hutt, a young Hutt who has only recently moved to Nar Shaddaa and is hoping to expand his operations.

You're aware that this is a reasonable offer when dealing with Hutts, especially given the number of potential employees on Nar Shaddaa, but you might be able to negotiate an increase. Roll versus Hard difficulty (that's 3 purple dice). On http://orokos.com/ you would type 3eD+whatever your dice pool is for the skill you'd like to use, eP for Proficiency [Yellow] and eA for Ability [Green] If you would rather just roll standard dice then we'll convert them using the table on the reference sheet I posted you all a link to. Proficiency dice are D12, Ability and Difficulty dice are both D8 but be careful to distinguish which is which!

Down in The Lotus

"Come on man, you know she never talks to anyone but made men, rolling in credits."

Torrance just shrugged at his 'friend', more like occasional drinking buddy and sometimes partner in night life shenanigans, Victor Frey. Both small town folks on Nar Shaada they fell in together not too long ago. Not the closest of relationships but the simple camaraderie of a shared past, and the need to have anyone at all you could watching your back often lead them to spend their nights together.

The Lotus was a usual spot for them. Victor himself having a problem with the Sabaac Tables, or rather with his own inability to hide his hand from showing on his face. Torrance himself having taken a fancy to one of the waitresses at The Lotus, and none too successfully, as she seemed to have an eye only for those with large stacks of Credit Sticks, definitely not a category that Torrance has been in since he found himself washed up on the Smuggler's Moon.

Another night, another session of getting ignored. Not that he ever pushed THAT hard, he was smart enough to see the various Gamoreans, Thugs, and assorted leg breakers the Hutt had around here. Unwanted attention being something likely to get him force piked by a pig, after all. Nonetheless, he remained there, nursing a watered down drink, enjoying a few scant credits from Victor, and wondering how he was going to make paid on the favor tomorrow, or any other of many, many concerns he had about what the next day was going to bring.

It was in this state, when he got the message from the man behind the bar, and the introduction to some Hutt's pet Twi'lek. Torrance himself was hardly the most imposing man in the room. A leather jacket, much as was the style with the free wheeling and fast dealing on Nar Shadaa, apparently unarmed at the moment. Tall, a bit thin, with short brown hair, and tanned skin. His green eyes were sharp, having a tendency to focus on small little details, moving about quickly rather than taking in entire images whole.

"Well, 10% sounds like above board, civilian cargo hauling contracts," Torrance countered, "I'm guessin' you didn't pull in the crew you got for hauling Bantha Fodder and Power Converters through Imperial Customs and watch everything get scanned and stamped. Might need just a wee bit more off the top to make sure everything ends up where it needs to end up. An operation has expenses, of course."

So yeah, 3 Failures on a Streetwise or Negotiation, really it's the same dice pool for me, but I could have seen either working. Which I guess means terribad things for me. Clearly I should not roll dice...

Tal'ohen cringes at Talohen's desperate attempt to sound like a card carrying mafioso. You get the strong impression that he wishes he had started the negotiation at a lower point...a much lower point.

"A word of advice Mr Cade ... quit while you're ahead. We need a few bodies for our next op and for that reason only, we'll hire you. I hope you can shoot and count better than you talk. Consider yourself on probation."

OOC: That REALLY was a bad roll!

Torrance did exactly that, shutting his mouth. Only aware after he spoke just how badly it had come out. Escpecially surrounded here by criminals, smugglers, and killers from what he could guess. Of course the fact that he was a Twi'lek probably didn't help matters. Aliens were always way too touchy after all. Or maybe he just had a certain sneer to his voice when he addressed them. Hard for him to really say, he wasn't that self aware about it. Cultural differences? Sure, lets call it cultural differences.

So he remained quiet, waiting for someone else to either insert their foot in the mouth enough to take attention off him, or move things along.

"You're a fast learner Mr Cade, I'll give you that at least," Tal'ohen says as he sits back in the chair, fingers steepled as he appraises you. "Well, you're hired. Now get out of my office, I have more reprobates to interview."

In a slight daze, Torrance leaves the office wondering if that just really happened. And, did that waitress, the one he likes, just smile at him....?

He hardly knew what to make of it, by the time he hustled out of there. A lot of questions in his mind. What was he doing? How were they going to contact him? Did they have his comlink code? Probably somehow. Hutts after all. He was pondering over these things, when he eyes caught the waitress, and he dared think for a moment that she might have been smiling at him. He quickly looked over his shoulder, to see if there was someone behind him that she was in fact looking at instead.

The credits weren't in his hand yet, but maybe she had a hint that he had something going on. It did put a smile on his face, as he went to look for Victor, making sure he hadn't lost TOO much money at the Sabaac tables while he was off making a fool of himself to the Twi'lek major domo.

As Torrance watched Victor lose yet another hand of sabbac he was suddenly aware of the pretty waitress (OOC: Do you have species in mind Arcturus?) hovering nearby.

"You want a drink handsome?" she asked softly, "You didn't come out of Tal's office in a bag so I figure you're one of us now. What's your poison? First drink's on the house for fresh meat."

Moss strolled into the casino, handing his force pike and blaster to the guard on the door. "Take good care of these, pal, or I ain't gonna be happy."

He needed to rebuild his reputation again, and this job would be the best way to do it. He waited for a summons for the job interview, taking care to stay sober. Upon being called in he sat himself down and got his speech out before the twi'lek could open his mouth.

"Now listen here, I have a code. You could call it a code of honour. It's what I base my reputation on. First, I never overcharge, never cheat anyone out of anything. Second, I do what I'm hired to do, no more questions asked than necessary. And finally, anyone who crosses me ends up dead in a sewer. It took a few moments for the words to sink in, and by the time he opened his eyes he nodded a little. "Umm... whatever is good..." he said. He wasn't quite familiar with the drinks around here, mostly just the probably low class, simple poisons of choice from his backwater world. He was aware his indecisiveness probably made him look stupid in front of her, wearing some flashing "Is a Hick" sign around his neck for her. He forced his eyes up, tried to smile, and forced himself to relax, which of course, made the tension show fairly plainly in his shoulders and arms, down to his hands which were fiddling to find something comfortable.

Thel walked into the Hutt club and immediately encountered two gamoreans and their handler. Holding up his hands in a placating gesture, the human male unbuttoned his dark olive nomad great coat and pulled out the lapels to let them see inside. The Corellian Security uniform was serviceable, but slightly outdated; a throwback to the pre-Imperial shift in style. Hanging from right hip was an ancient pistol. Long barreled with a gently curved stock, it would easily be mistaken for a slug thrower if not for the obvious power cell in the base of the grip. Hanging from a shoulder holster under his right arm was a twin to the first; a matched pair of dueling pistols. As if the two antiquated blasters were not enough, suspended from a frog attached to his belt on the left hip was an actual sword. A Corellian cutlass sheathed and swinging took the corsair look over the top.

The tousled blond haired man smirked at the woman and cockily arched an eyebrow as he said, "If this is too much for you, I have an eyepatch somewhere in here so you can take it in one eye at a time." He chuckled at his own humor as the porcine guards disarmed him and further patted him down to make sure he wasn't carrying anything else before thoroughly rummaging through his work bag.

The Corellian held onto the bag instead of surrendering it up to the guards, "While I don't like having my weapons taken from me, I'll be damned if you take my tools."

Splitting the post to move on to the Twi'lek job offer scene, but please feel free to respond, Sinte.

---------------------------------------------------

Following the directions, Thel approaches the office. Knocking before entering, he walks inside and looks at the Weequay before acknowledging the Twi'lek. Sitting down, he lazily drops the work bag at his feet before speaking. "How do. I heard you're looking for an experienced pilot."

Hearing the offer that Tal'ohen makes, the Corellian breaks into a wide grin. "I suppose you say the same thing to every being looking for work. Well, assuming you do, I'll accept the job for pilot." Patting his bag, he adds, "I'll also accept the mechanic's position at a full share. As a token of my willingness to work, I won't even charge you a third share for any work I have to do on the second freighter out in the field."

Talo'hen smirks and even Roda can't suppress a slight grin. "You've got some nerve Corellian. Jemba would like you. Thing is he's not exactly generous or good at Math. If he thinks you're charging him for two people well ... he might just be inclined to have Roda here cut you in half. He'd find that reeaaallll funny."

"The offer stands as is but you never know. Bonuses are always possible, 'specially if you're half as good as your rep. You deliver the cargo we want within three weeks and Jemba might be pleased enough to leave you in one piece."

"And before you ask what the job is, don't get ahead of yourself. We'll tell you all at the same time ... tomorrow. For now, stow your gear upstairs and get some kip."

The following day..

You are all gathered in the casino's conference room. Jemba the Hutt is in attendance having arrived on a repulsorlift sled surrounded by a small army of Evocii and Twi'lek slaves and preceded by a couple of heavily armoured bounty hunters in full face masks. He hovers on his sled just to the left of the lectern letting Tal'ohen do the talking.

Tal'ohen clears his throat and begins, "Mighty Jemba, may he live forever, wishes it to be known that he entrusts you with a special mission. One that will allow you to advance in his favour. Displease him though and you will find that his mercy has limits."

"The great Jemba has cleverly struck a deal with the R'lyek Clan on Ryloth for a cargo of Ryll spice. This cargo must be collected from Ryloth and brought here within three weeks. Our spice must be on the market by then for it to earn its highest possible value. Any later and other suppliers will lower the market value. I am sure that you can appreciate the importance of this deadline and of the value of attaining great Jemba's favour in accomplishing this."

"Mighty Jemba has granted you two of his freighters to achieve this goal, a HT 2200 Medium Freighter and a Ghtroc 720 Light Freighter. Captain Byen, her droid and Syn Setho .." he nods towards a blue skinned Duros Bounty Hunter leaning against the right wall ... "will take the Ghtroc freighter, the rest of you will crew the HT2200."

" You must fly to Ryloth, collect the Ryll and deliver it to Jemba's warehouses here on Nar Shaddaa within the allotted time. Your contact on Ryloth is an elderly Twi'lek called Vej'zusal. You'll meet him at Nabat spaceport and he will take you to where he has stored the cargo, 40 crates of refined Ryll."

"Captain Byen will now share a map of the route"

Captain Byen is a young and slim human female with a Corellian look to her. She looks and walks like a gunfighter yet speaks like a seasoned soldier.

"This is the best and most up to date map we could get of the region, showing the available hyperspace routes. Unfortunately it doesn't quite show Ryloth but it's positioned just off the bottom of the map on the Corellian Run (labelled '2' on the map). As most of you will know hyperspace routes can change due to a wide range of astrological variables, supernovas, wandering planets, solar flares etc. The only really stable routes are the great hyperspace lanes like the Corellian Run. There are several possible routes to Ryloth.

1. The safer but slower route via Gamorr. This should take somewhere between 10 - 12 days one way due to the class 3 hyperdrive on the medium freighter
2. The second option is via Bothawui which might reduce travel time by one or two days but is more likely to be subject to gravity well disruptions which might force our ships out of Hyperspace. It is also likely to be more heavily patrolled by the Empire.
3. Lastly we can try and chart a new route. This could potentially cut the trip to 6 or 7 days but equally could spell disaster and the loss of both ships."

At this, Jemba bristles and slaps one of his slaves viciously across the head, "No, no, you must not risk my ships or Jemba will find many painful ways for you to die."

Byen clears her throat, "I advise the Gamorr route since the round trip can be achieved within the time frame but we can discuss the options properly following the briefing"

Tal'ohen steps forward again, "Mighty Jemba has put the enterprise into your hands. Do not disappoint him."

"Mister Cade, I entrust to you a specially encrypted credstick which you will pass to Vej'zusal in exchange for the goods, in addition you have a 1,000 credit stick for expenses, as long as they're accounted for properly. I want a fully itemised balance sheet and every last credit accounted for or returned."

"Any questions?"

What you know about Ryloth - Ryloth is a planet in the Ryloth system of the Outer Rim Territories, and the homeworld of the Twi'lek species. Its terrain is varied, filled with jungles, mesas, valleys, and volcanoes, and it has an atmosphere breathable for Twi'leks and humans alike. A forest covers its equator, filled with dangerous predators. Given the varied and dangerous terrain, Twi'leks live in caves underground where it is safer. It is also the source of the spice Ryll, the planet's main export apart from it's highly prized slaves.

He barely remembered last night. He wasn't sure if it was the haze of the alcohol, the effect of her smile on him, or just the stark realization that he had got in with a Hutt Crime Lord. Any one of the three could have been blamed, but he had a feeling it was more about all of the above, leaving him feeling numb when he finally went to the meeting with the Hutt himself, and his various coterie of sycophants and entertainers. Space Travel was... not exactly big on his list of things he wanted to do. He wasn't really going to be useful up there, having only been on a couple of commercial, civilian flights in his time. Mostly just the chain that had gotten him here, to Nar Shaada and left him pretty well stranded without the credits to move on.

But he couldn't well turn down the job. He needed the credits himself. So did his folks back home, his mind still calling that humble little bit of dirt. His mind did the quick calculation, trying to map out his own minimal needs, and how much he could send home, just guessing based on what a cargo hold of spice might go for, before street mark up and taking out expenses.

It had him a bit lost in thought as he pondered it out, when his attention was snapped back by the right hand twi'lek. "Not a problem," he said simply enough. Balancing the books would hardly be a terrible task. He was used to doing this sort of thing back home. Not so much avoiding pirates and Imperial Customs Agents... but the others with him seemed more of the Persuasive Type if that came up. Far more heavily armed than he was. And at least looking familiar and comfortable with their gear.

Moss spoke up, "I got no questions. If I need any more information, I'm sure you'll give me it. I'll vouch for the Bothawui route, I been around that area a few times, and I'm sure we could worm our way out of any trouble with Imps, though I'm just the hired muscle. It's not my decision to make."

He might have liked a bit more information, a reassurance that this plan wasn't going to end badly, but to question his new boss would hurt any reputation he might have built up. He had an image to maintain after all.

OOC did we have role introductions during the meeting? Do our characters know who is who now?

OOC: I'm suggesting that you all do that now, a discussion about which roles you should all take on the ship and which route to take is a good place to introduce your skills and share a bit about yourselves, or at least as much as you want the other PCs to know

Tal'ohen looked around, the hirelings seemed reasonably content with the job. After all it should be a cakewalk and the hired guns along for the ride should be more than enough to deal with any complications.

"Well then," he said, "the great Jemba has business elsewhere to attend to so we'll leave you to get to know one another and make any arrangements you need to. May I remind you that your three weeks starts now."

With that the Hutt and his entourage left, Jemba doing his best to look casual floating by on the repulsorlift sled, smoking his hooklah pipe.

You're all left looking at one another. Byen turns to you and says, "Well I might as well start, Captain Byen Jakar at your service. I've done a few runs like this in the past though I won't say who for. Seems pretty straightforward but we'll need to be careful. The Twi'lek Clans can be twitchy and 40 creates is a lot of Ryll. WAC-IN here .." she indicates the silver droid, "is my first mate. We've been through a lot together and between us we're more than capable of piloting, astrogating and maintaining that Ghtroc freighter."

"I'm ready to leave whenever you guys are and first thing we'll be doing is checking out that freighter to see how spaceworthy she is"

The Duros bounty hunter speaks next, "Syn Setho, hired gun. I've done a few jobs for Jemba before, hunting down bad debts, that sort of thing. I know my way around a spaceship and can co-pilot or man the turret but I'm mostly along to handle security I guess" he pats the pulse rifle in his lap. "I don't know about the rest of you but taking the Gamorr route both ways seems to be cutting the timeline a bit too tight for my liking. I like a sure thing."

They all look at the rest of you expectantly ..

Nyx puts both of her hands on the table by the map chart and chimes in: "Bothawui is the way to go,at least while we are travelling light. Even if they stop us,theres nothing criminal worthy on board, aside from our peers. And Im sure we can get through that easy. On the way back though, I do suggest we take the slower route. We shouldnt risk the spice when its in our posession. And if the pilots feel up to the task, Im all for doing a custom route on the way there. Just dont get cocky when the goods are in our hands."

She then pauses for crew introductions and introduces herself when she can. "Name's Nyx,nice and simple, just how this gig should go. Im part of your security detail, meaning in combat situations,we lead, you follow. Just as I will follow your decisions in space and negotiations." She looks around the room and exclaims "And if any of you miscreants attempt to cheat the crew, myself,or the Hutt out of the spice gig, getting us all on edge with the cartel, you will need to invest in some prosthetic limbs." As she says that, she sticks one of her Ryyk blades into a surface that wont get too damaged by it.

She was on a hair trigger. He knew that much. But he knew as well it was more saber rattling, than a serious threat right now. Establishing an order, trying to place herself as the big dog in the yard. He wasn't inclined to disagree with her, not really wanting to measure his paltry aim against her armor and weaponry. Just seemed like a bad idea all around. Only shot he really had would have been getting the drop on her, and even then, he wasn't confident.

The talk of routes was over his head. He didn't have much to add, looking at the map, it was all just a jumble of information, pictures with no real relevance to him. He couldn't even begin to guess what complications there would be, or just how available finding a route to Ryloth would be from Nar Shaadaa, so he did something smart, he kept quiet as the two who seemed to know what was what discussed the options.

So instead he commented on something he felt at least a little qualified for, "Remember, we got limited credits here. And we're likely to rack up expenses on the journey. Keep it cheap. If we're having to refuel a lot on some jumbled route you chart, well, that's going to leave us short on credits when we get there. I don't know what's waiting on Ryloth or the way back, but I'm betting there's going to be some issues only smoothed over with blaster bolts or cred sticks at some point during this job."

"And I don't know about you, but I find creds work a lot better for keeping my skin intact." Buying his way out of trouble? You bet he'd do it rather than draw down in a shootout. He considered it the only sane choice really, even an expert could take a bad shot, after all. Had to be a real psycho to step into a firing line you didn't have to.

He didn't know, but he framed it as an honest question, looking around at the crew, trying to peg who might be the navigational experts, his eyes mostly settling on Zack, as he seemed most excited at the prospect of a new route in and of itself.

Moss was just about comfortable with the situation, until Nyx began to speak, the blatant threats were not something he had expected and it threw him off guard. That, and the mention of a contact in Bothawui had him reeling. He felt outclassed already, but this job wasn't about being the man in the room everyone listens too, not like it had been for him before. No, for this job he was the muscle, nothing more unless everything crumbled around him. And so, now settled, the bothan spoke up.

"The name's Moss Dal'pek, though just Moss will do. I'm the muscle for this here job, but I know my way around a business deal or two as well. I'm quick with a blaster, quicker with a force pike. The only other thing you need to know is that you can trust me. I always complete a job, and I never charge more than a fair price, that's how you build customers. I may lie to you, or hell, even betray you, but if I do it will be because that was what needed doing to get the job done.

And for lighter matters, I'm voting for the Bothawui route. I may not have quite the level of contacts Nyx appears to have, but I've got some cousins who owe me favours, and the Imps shouldn't be watching out for me in that sector. And I have to say, I do quite like Nyx's plan."

"Sorry to be a worry wart but we could have a slight problem here. Our Hutt friend has been skimping on maintenance. Both ships are fully fueled but the Ghtroc is low on crew consumables and she's got a few second rate convertors installed. I haven't had a good look at the HT yet but she doesn't look in great shape from the outside. Can one of you guys come and check it? I'd do it but I've got a partly dismantled sublight engine generator to fix first."

"Torrance, do you think you could rustle up another week or two of base proteins for the autochef? Looks like we're going to need those extra credits sooner rather than later."

This should cost 10 credits a day oer person but some hunting around and negotiating might help lower the price

OOC: Afraid not, Survival is for wilderness planets.

"Can you help find some new converter parts, or at least some in better condition than the rubbish I'm looking at right now?" comes back Byen's voice.

Your Streetwise ability is quite good because of your Cunning and that's sort of like a Survival skill for built up areas. You might also remember that you have Astrogation skill so you could help with charting the route, that might impress upon everyone the possibility of charting a new route after all, especially on the way home

Torrance pondered, thinking about that meager 1000 credits, and how fast it would go if he had to feed this lot, on top of unexpected troubles likely to pan out on a journey. He shook his head, amazed at just how this deal kept getting worse and worse all the time.

"Hutts..." he muttered it like it was a curse, "Well I'll see what I can do about it. Just don't expect any miracles or luxurious 18 course meals," he seemed to buck up a little as he said that, flashing a smile, the expression coming through on his tone through the commlink with Byen. His mind was already grinding away as he turned off the commlink for the moment. He knew a few people, down on the lower levels, could get some 'no questions' stuff of questionable substances. No idea how the Rodian or Bothan would handle rations, or if they had some specialized needs though. For all he knew he could end up buying a bunch of stuff one of them was going to choke on in some deathly reaction. And that wasn't even calculating if what they told him it was, was indeed what the food substances were.

"Hey, Um... what was the name again?" he asked looking to Weld, "Mind coming with me on this little trip, make sure everything passes muster for wellness? Ah, yes, Weld Benito, that was it. Yes. Well I figure as the doctor you are well familiar with the nutritional requirements and limitations of Bothan and Rodisian physiologies, correct? Wouldn't want to be buying something you couldn't consume."

"Well Zack, Nar Shadaa being what it does seem to be, strength in numbers isn't something I'd turn down. Nor should you, if you were wise. If you can handle yourself well enough, and keep your blaster in check when things are amicable, I could definitely use another pair of eyes. Enough vultures on this planet that walking with credits isn't exactly a stroll through the Imperial Plaza."

Well, presuming he could get their help, things were looking fairly well. Wouldn't do to have some quick fingered little urchin to do away with a Hutt's money. He didn't have to be an expert in Hutt Politics to know that was likely to lead to the crew being slowly digested by some alien beast over a thousand years, more than it was to result in a simple shrug and 'Crap Happens'.

He was planning ahead though, thinking of a local ethnic dealer he had been doing business with a few days before on one of the more upright and legit market levels of Nar Shadaa. A bit pricier perhaps than the cheap military grade rations he could pick up from some survivalist, bounty hunter catering depot store, and definitely pricier than the "No Questions Asked" dealers down lower. But quality came with the price. And he was thinking of buying a bit extra (enough for the full trip) here... but maybe making the margins on the trip. Good, exotic (To Ryloth) food could be sold off there, for a profit, buying cheaper local fare (And giving the crew some needed variety). Might actually come out ahead on the Expense Account, if it all worked according to plan. And that might just lead to better opportunities later. First job, it was a try out, and you had to show off your best, not just run the errand.

Welp, let me know if its out of line... but thinking about flipping that Destiny Point I rolled to get a Food Dealer contact here. I mean it's something logical. Smuggler Moon, major market, some "upscale" food suppliers should be here, easily. Just not bulling ahead with the actual scene in case Doc or Zack wanna tag along and make sure I don't get shanked in an alleyway or something. Dunno if that counts as an appropriate use, but hey, trying to get into the spirit of things. :smallwink:

Just a note on rule mechanics, the Destiny pool is shared by all players so you don't have your own personal point, that mechanic spreads the effect of the good and bad rolls.
You could use a point here to bring about this outcome and ensure that you actually get more or less exactly what you're after. However a Streetwise roll (which use base Cunning for PCs that don't have a skill point in it) would be an equally good option.
From a GMs perspective I'd say Torrance's character background tells me that he has been here long enough to know where he could at least start looking
As for the trading idea, it's a good one but it might be worth finding out what Ryloth imports ie: what would sell well there. You could easily find a legal cargo, and just as easily find an illegal one

Between having his inquiry on a navigator ignored, the lack of preparation on the ships and the two meatheads leaving for who-knows-where, Weld was beginning to get somewhat impatient with this mission. His former employer and coworkers were never this sloppy with their work. Thankfully, the Rodian was able to distract himself from his frustrations when Torrance, who seemed to be the most competent of the group, asked for his help on food-gathering.

<"I am at your service,"> Weld responded to the human, thankful to finally be of use. <"This shouldn't be too much trouble for me.">

From what I've seen there aren't any dietary limitations on Bothans or Rodians (maybe no chocolate for the Bothans) but could I do a Medicine check to see?

OOC: Apologies for the slow reply. It's awkward to do anything more complicated than a basic post on my phone so I needed to wait till I had computer access. I also needed to roll a couple of Difficulty dice to modify your roll - you can generally assume that most tasks are Average difficulty (2 dice) unless I tell you otherwise and generally roll your own difficulty dice along with the skill dice. Also, you rolled one dice too many. You get a total of 3 dice for your base stat (Cunning) but one gets converted into a Proficiency dice by your skill level. Not a major hassle since you rolled so well

Torrance strolls through the bazaar, knowing that there is a good chance of finding the consumables he needs at a good price but also something he can sell on Ryloth. Following his nose, and for once feeling almost at home in this rats nest of thieves and swindlers he smoothly rejects offers that are clearly excessive. Torrance has also been able to discover the fact that Ryloth often imports medicines and with Weld in tow they have been looking for quality stimpacks at a decent price.

Finally they stumble upon a trader who is clearly desperate for fast money and obviously nervous about moving the goods he offers. A flurried sequence of bargaining follows with Torrance beating the trader down further to the point where you feel he is probably going to lose a significant amount of money.

The lowest possible offer is 80 units of food (enough to feed all eight characters) for ten days at the cost of 200 credits (probably a quarter of what it should cost and probably at least 30% below the trader's margin)

He is also willing to go down to 600 credits for a crate of 100 stimpacks (worth 2,500 credits).

You're just finalising the deal when in walks a group of three street thugs in blue jackets and their leader, an ugly looking Nikto with a huge scar where his right eye should be. They're carrying nasty looking clubs and are clearly after trouble. "So Vargan, you've got some customers I see, I hope for your sorry hide that they brought something. You owe us big time."

Turning to Torrance and Weld, the leader says, "And you two, you need some directions, the door is that way, get out while you still have both legs."

http://orokos.com/roll/397084 A bit of a nasty threat roll (you end on -3) but still leaves you with 6 successes, though as I indicated above, you did roll an extra ability die. Assuming that we drop off two successes, that still leaves you with 4, easily enough to find a real bargain

OOC: You can let me know what you purchased (if anything) prior to the incident

Torrance was pretty quiet, mostly just asking Weld for some confirmations, asking some simple little questions to the nervous dealer, making sure the rations were at least of some cursory quality, checking over some random lots of it to be certain he wasn't hiding some rotting filth under just an appeasing top layer of the crates.

If he was satisfied that everything was more or less on the level, he had pointed out the 80 sets of rations, and also took a small skimming of 50 Stimpacks, not quite willing to blow his wad on the whole thing, and knowing he'd need to arrange for rations down the line, just in case his information was wrong and Ryloth wasn't exactly demanding the stims.

He trusted Weld, without saying so specifically, to check the medical supplies, make sure that they at least appeared on the level before they left. However he didn't get much time to have the Rodian do the inspection before the two brutish thugs came in. Torrance kept himself clear, well out of club swinging range as best he could, not giving some itchy thug an excuse to cave in his skull, his hands up as he backed off, showing he wasn't going to get involved.

When they mentioned the debts though, he smiled a bit, barely there for a second before he looked over to Vargan, picking up the name so helpfully dropped. Opportunity was knocking all over today, and he pondered a bit on how he could take advantage. Giving a shocked expression to Vargan he stepped towards the merchant, "You assured me of future shipments!" he snapped out, yelling, clearly livid at Vargan by his delivery. "You miserable little scumsucking (expletive)! You can't even keep your house in order? Inexcusable, you better not have been planning on skipping out on me!" Torrance slammed his hand down on a crate with a heavy thud.

He turned towards the thugs, shaking his head, "Coming to it where no one can be trusted to do anything at all... Used to be a time when dealers used to know running a tight ship was good for their livelihood, if not their hides..." he scoffed a little and looked back over his shoulder at the merchant, and gave him a little wink that the thugs wouldn't notice.

"Guess this might as well be yours," he said, taking out the credits he owed the merchant, tossing it over to the thugs. "... course if you don't mind... I got a bit of a lesson to teach him..." He cracked his knuckles loudly and turning around stormed towards the merchant, cuffing him about the head a little, an impact that looked and sounded bad, but would do little but ring his bell for a moment. He grabbed him by the arm, dragging him out back, out of sight.

He whispered to the merchant, "You better scream like your life depends on it..." as he tossed the man down onto the floor out of sight of the thugs, and from his apparent motions and the sounds he was making, giving the man a thrashing of a life, stomping a hole in his chest. In actuality just stomping, and trusting in the merchant to scream, mixed with Torrance's own rage filled shouts. Trusting in thug behavior not to see too much point in beating the crap out of someone who apparently was already due for a bacta tank, his hand getting ready to pull out his blaster, just in case... Risk vs reward, he was looking to play long term here, and put someone in his pocket for later.

So... going to throw Deception for this little Act against the Thugs, making them think I'm kicking the ever living crap out the merchant and that they don't have to bother.

Aaaaaand with the secondary goal of having a merchant contact who is definitely indebted to me for saving him from a savage beating. Contacts never hurt... <.< Rolled 2 Difficulty dice since you mentioned it's usually that.

Getting to his feet and dusting himself off he offers his hand, "Name's Marnel. Pleased to meet you stranger. You're welcome to the whole crate of stimpacks if you want em. Guess you've sort of paid for em anyway"

OOC: Sounds like you've decided to take the newly discovered route. Overall the roll for that came out to 4 successes and 4 threats so there will likely be some complications but also a good measure of success.
You need to balance that outcome against the very solid roll for the conventional route via Bothawui (2 success, 1 advantage) so in theory there's no down side to the route you've charted apart from it definitely taking a bit longer.

(Less time in hyperspace = more chance of meeting the deadline, less fuel used and less food eaten. It comes at a risk though, which you would be able to see from the calculations you have done.)

I just need Zack and Thel to confirm their decision.

Weld let Torrance do the talking, only answering the questions that Torrance asked about the food and supplies. He was extremely impressed when the human managed to get so many stimpacks for such a cheap price, but instinct told Weld that such cheap medical supplies would most likely not be of the highest quality. The Rodian had planned on checking out the supplies, if not for the interruption by the gang.

When the thugs had arrived, Weld had discreetly gone for his blaster and had planned on letting the thugs beat up the merchant and then seeing what price he'd get for the supplies afterwards. Unsure whether the thugs could speak Rodian, Weld was about to leave the men to their work but stopped in surprise as Torrance seemingly began beating up the shopkeeper.

<"What in the name of-!"> Weld cried out, trying to run towards the deranged human before being stopped by the arm of one of the gang members. By the time the gang members left and Torrance showed his true intentions, Weld was feeling light in the head, and had to lean on the wall for a few seconds.

"Torrance Cade," he said, offering his hand to the merchant, nice, professional handshake. He glanced over to the Doc, making sure he was okay, and checking out the supplies. "Anyway, keep your head down low. If you're still mobile in a few weeks I might have some more business for you. Well, unless you're planning on skipping town," he glanced back towards the door where the thugs had left pointedly, and back to Marnel. "Stick around though, and I'm sure we can have a lucrative relationship."

He turned to Weld, "Everything check out?" he asked, thinking that his inspection of the goods was just about over. If it all checked out, he started gathering the supplies, loading them up on a repulsor lift dolly. All said, a fairly smooth operation, at least for Nar Shadaa, as he considered it, with a nice little profit. As he walked out with the supplies, and headed back for the ship, he was making notes on his datapad, full price of the materials he paid recorded down, details of the encounter, down to full descriptions of the thug and the merchant. Never knew when the information would come in handy after all.

The Jump to Hyperspace

With everyone on board and the cargo, such as it is, secured, Thel and Zack quickly prep the freighter for lift off.

The HT2200 is a ugly beast on the ground and she shakes a bit as she lifts off causing some of you to glance sideways at one another. However once the old freighter has cleared the hanger she gains some momentum and you rise gently over the moon's neon signs, floating palaces and sky scraping towers making your way into a high orbit. As you do so you become even more aware of the huge mass of Nal Hutta below and are reminded that despite the teeming masses living on Nar Shaddaa it is still just a moon and the galaxy is a big place.
http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/starwars/images/d/de/YToub_system.png/revision/latest?cb=20151004043553

Across the com comes Byen's voice, "Hutt's Nexus to Blue Bantha, we're in position for the jump. Ready on your mark."

Thel engages the hyperdrive and a rush of stars and the sudden momentum of the jump pushes you back in your seats.

A few hours later, you're up and moving around the ship, cleaning weapons, talking, playing holochess etc.

It's been pretty rough so far with a lot of hyperspace turbulence and you're finding it difficult to rest but otherwise things seem to be running according to plan.

Exiting hyperspace - Ryloth?

The trip has been a rough one and it's been difficult to sleep properly (2 strain on all characters) but the trip has otherwise been uneventful and only six days later you're approaching the Ryloth system. As you emerge from hyperspace though you appear in the middle of a debris field and a number of sizeable objects smack into the ship's hull (one hull trauma).

Thel and Zack quickly get the 'Blue Bantha' under control and check your position.

It seems like you have come out of hyperspace in the right system but orbiting the wrong planet. Systems indicate that you're currently orbiting Or Tuma, a ball of frozen rock, the outermost planet in the Ryloth system.

As you're taking stock of the situation the Ghtroc freighter 'Hutt's Nexus' drops out of hyperspace nearby, suffering similar damage to your ship.

You're 12 hours travel by sublight from Ryloth. The Ghtroc freighter is faster though and can make the journey in eight hours if you want to split up.
You both gain one Boost dice to your next Astrogation roll for a trip on this route.
Both your ship ('The Blue Bantha') and the Ghtroc freighter ('The Hutt's Nexus') have consumed 27 1/2 fuel cells each. The Bantha has much larger fuel cells (it's a bigger ship) so it has 72.5 left but the 'Nexus' has only 22.5 left. The trip back will require slightly more fuel too, since you'll have a fully loaded ship, especially if you take the longer route (and therefore will require more power generation). Unless you really go out of your way, the 'Bantha' has easily enough fuel to get back to Nar Shaddaa but the 'Nexus' doesn't.
On the 'Bantha' you've consumed 36 consumables (you have 114 left) and on the 'Nexus' they have consumed 12 consumables (they have 68 left). This is including the extra consumables Torrance and Weld purchased.

Moss spent most of the time on the ship practicing close combat fighting with anyone who would indulge him. He spent the nights when he couldn't sleep researching the Ryloth trade industry, and the hutt who hired him, and came away from it with more than a passing knowledge of these things.

As they came out of hyperspace, shaken by the collisions, he made his way to the bridge to get an update on the situation. "What was that? Have we arrived at Ryloth yet?"

Upon receiving a response, Moss begins to head towards the cargo bay. "I'll be in the cargo bay if you need me, unless you've got a job you want me to do now. If you want the goods prepared for off-loading, I can try to sort that out. Otherwise, I'll be practising with my force pike, as before."

It hadn't been an easy flight for Torrance. He never was used to space travel, and the rough ride made him spend a lot of time in the Refresher, emptying out his stomach from what few things he was able to cram down during the flight, until nothing but bile and acid was coming up. He looked a bit pale, and was unsteady on his feet as he trudged back to his little space, trying to get it feeling like the world wasn't twisting around him all the time.

He heard some people talking, and apparently landing was sometime soon. With a grunt he tried to straighten himself up, smooth the wrinkles out of his clothing, levering up onto his feet and stumbling off to find the Doc. When he finally found Weld he gave a very wan, pathetic looking smile, "Seems we'll be dirtside soon. Got something to settle my system, so I can make a decent impression if I have to talk to Customs?"

No clue of course about how off target that they actually were, and how long the actual burn to Ryloth itself was, or that they weren't actually near Bothuwai and dealing with the halfway point customs. He hadn't been in the cockpit the entire journey, afraid that looking out into the void would cause his stomach to twist and knot up even worse, combined with the rocky motions of the ship.

If you ever asked Nyx,she would spar with you. Not much for entertainment on this rust bucket anyway, and more practice is always handy.

OOC: Botting Thel by request

As the 'Bantha' emerged from hyperspace and hurtled through the debris field, Thel fought the controls of the old freighter, cursing it's poor handling. When the vessel came to a standstill and he was able to survey the damage as well as the ship's location in realspace, he turned the ship's vox on and announced, "Welcome to Ryloth everyone. Unfortunately we've still got a bit of a trip ahead of us. Good news is that it'll take 12 hours so you can get some rest if you want. The 'Nexus' is faster so she could go ahead but maybe we should stick together for safety, just in case."

"Just a heads up, we're doing well on fuel and have enough to get back to Nar Shaddaa but the 'Nexus' is going to need refueling here, not to mention docking fees for both of us. When we get planetside, we should check the hull properly too. I hope you've got some credits left Torrance."

Weld had taken the trip particularly hard, spending most of his time in whatever private quarters he could find. The Rodian was somewhat jittery and, by the time they were nearing their destination, seemed to be involuntary shaking his hands.

Torrance found Weld near the medical supplies, closing a small box and putting it in his pocket. The doctor seemed much better and even more alert than usual as he looked through his supplies for something to help Torrance.

<"My expertise focuses on... superficial injuries, but I'll see what antiemetics I have. However,"> Weld took a stimpack from one of the boxes. <"If you'd like to make a better impression, I may have something to help you. Stimpacks come in many forms and have different medicines in them, you see, and the right one just might help you relax and increase your overall presence with your audience."> (He's explaining the Stim Application Talent.)

While Weld wasn't lying, he'd been looking for a reason to stay close to Torrance anyway. The encounter in the market had left an impression, and the Rodian was eager to get on the human's good side. Torrance had a lot of potential, and Weld wanted to be there to reap some of the benefits. It was time that he get back to the top of the Outer Rim food chain.

Zack remembers a number of things that he has heard about Ryloth.

It's typically quite safe from pirates but this is because it is often patrolled by the Imperial Navy and/or Imperial Customs, partly because of it's position on the Corellian Run and partly because of the illegal trade in slaves and spice

It only has three planets and only Ryloth itself has moons, five of them. There are no dangerous stellar anomalies

Zack also remembers hearing something about the government of Ryloth being virtually non existent, districts are ruled by a number of clans, many of who are often at war with one another.

Lastly, he recalls the fact that Ryloth has twin capital cities, Lessu and Kala'uun. Nabat must therefore be a minor city and the spaceport facilities there may well be basic

Zack takes a turn on the ship's vox to relay what he knows.

"The good news is we shouldn't have any pirate problems, and the stellarography between here and Ryloth shouldn't cause us any problems. The bad news is there may still be Imperial customs patrols around, but we may not get as much attention as we're not coming in from the normal route per se. Also, I think the spaceport we're heading too may be a bit basic, so bear that in mind with any plans you're making. Zack out."

Following Zack's warning it probably comes as no surprise that as the 'Bantha' and 'Nexus' are approaching Ryloth your scanners pick up a ship. It's moving towards you.

Checking you can see that it has a relatively small silhouette (size 4) and it's transponders identify it as an Imperial Customs Frigate.

Suddenly you get an incoming signal, "Unidentified freighters, this is the Imperial Customs Frigate FF-176, state your business and cargo."

Torrance arches an eyebrow at the mention of stims, "You'd think if that actually worked out, everyone would be doing it. Must be some drawback you haven't quite let me on with," he didn't know much about medicine, but he knew if merchants could just shoot up some magical science goop that would make them all that more effective, well... merchants would, anything for profit margins.

"Anyway, lets keep that on the back shelf for now. Look into it, take some samples or whatever you need to test me for, in terms of compatibility. I might need it someday, but probably not on a milk run like this." He seemed fairly more confident now, at least now that there seemed to be progress being made, they were on their final burns, and there was at least an option for settling him down.

It was then that he heard the crackle of the Customs Frigate over the comms, and smiled to the Doctor, "Thinking ahead, saves you so much trouble..." he said, as he went over to the cockpit to check up on the others, making sure that they weren't freaking out or acting too suspicious about the customs frigate. He sees Nyx running, not exactly a good sign as he saw it, too much tension.

When he finally got to the cockpit, he seemed fairly relaxed, being up and on his feet seems to have returned his vigor back to him after the rough hyperspace flight.

He spoke to Zack, voice calm and steady, "We have a cargo of medical supplies, on a trade route between Ryloth and Balmorra," he fed him the half-truth. They did have a stack of medical supplies, and if Customs checked up on him (Likely, he expected if they were boarded he'd be doing the talking) they might find out he was from Balmorra by birth. Squeaky clean record, known for doing some merchant work, after all.

"Just relax, nothing to hide here, nothing to get worked up about, comply like any good little freighter captain and we'll just sail on through." He seemed to believe it, or at least was confident enough that it practically radiated off him.

He looked over to Nyx, "Might want to patch in with the others, let them know what's going on, and to follow our lead on this."

Want me to throw a leadership to inspire and get all our ducks in a row? Why not? Worse case worse, it's just a fluffy roll.

Moss recalls hearing that the Empire hasn't intervened much in the domestic politics and power structures on Ryloth. The Imps like everyone to comply with the New Order and provided that there is no "insurgent activity" and all Imperial laws are adhered to, they don't seem to mind too much who is actually "in charge" in any given system.

The best response might be to answer quickly and decisively, welcoming an inspection if it was felt warranted. Evasive responses and delays are likely to incur a sharper reaction, especially from a bureaucracy as powerful as Imperial Customs.

Streetwise probably wasn't the most applicable skill, maybe Knowledge (Core Worlds) or Education would have been better, not a major deal though since you rolled well. I'd consider this a relatively Easy task

He didn't want to undermine the pilot, but as time was ticking, and the Customs Frigate repeated its request, he reached over, flipping on the Comms to reply.

"Master Torrance Cade, Merchant Ship Registry Blue Bantha," he replied to the Customs Frigate. The title of 'Master' was chosen purposefully. While tradition allowed for most ship's to call their leader a Captain, it was technically a military rank, the appropriate rank for a civilian was 'Master' or 'Ship Master'. At least as far as he knew. "Cargo of Medical Supplies to Ryloth."

That simple, he volunteered no additional information, delivering it smoothly and with a professional tone. No lies given to be called out on either, beyond the minor presumption of taking a leadership role when dealing with Imperial Customs.

There was a slight delay, no doubt due to deliberation aboard the Custom Frigate about whether it was really worth the bother of boarding a ship inbound to Ryloth.

Suddenly the comms crackle back into life, "Very well Bantha and Nexus. You may proceed. FF-176 out"

Engaging thrusters again, you move on towards Ryloth

http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/starwars/images/d/d3/Ryloth_EotECR.png/revision/latest?cb=20151017214247

You start your descent through the atmosphere. The winds are fierce but Thel and Zack keep the Bantha relatively steady as she descends.

Making contact with Nabat Spaceport you get the following response:

"Welcome to Nabat 'Bantha', you and 'Nexus' are welcome to land on the duracrete fields north of the city for 30 credits each plus 25 per day. If you want then Landing Bay Besh is available for one of you inside the city limits. It has maintenance facilities available and will set you back 50 credits a day."

Follow the beacons in, you're clear to land."

OOC: You'll need to make a choice about splitting up the ships or not.

You're aware that any maintenance requirements will come at a cost but will be much easier in a proper landing bay. Power supply (to keep the ship's systems running) will also usually be available in a proper landing bay. The duracrete fields will probably be little more than a solid surface, though it's likely that you'll be able to access some basic services eg: fuel and power

"I'm not exactly in charge here, but I'm not sure separating the ship's is a good idea. If one is in the bay and one is outside, it might cause us problems if we need to dust off both of them in a hurry. What do you all think?"

Torrance shrugged at that, "Well, if it was a normal business venture, I'd say to keep them together. Makes logistics and coordination easier if we are in the same space, helps the loading and unloading, and so forth. However..." he looked to the others, studying each of them in turn. "This isn't necessarily a normal situation. We might have to cut and run at some point. And being split up does mean it'll be marginally harder for all of us to get pinned down if we have to scramble on out of here."

It was, to him, an uncomfortable, but sobering thought. He'd been in JUST enough scraps to realize sometimes things go egg shaped, and your only choice was to run like a rabid gundark was after you. Not a pleasant thought. Then again, it wasn't pleasant either pondering what a Hutt might do to them if there was total, abject failure and none of the Spice got its way back to him.

"Anyway, this does seem more the realm of your expertise than mine, so what's your feel on it?" he asked no one in particular, just trusting that the harder edged, more heavily armed goon types had at least a little more experience with the Illicit part of Illicit Trading.

Thel has found that the HT-2200 is in poor shape with several hours of maintenance due. A number of systems are worn and are at the point where they are likely to risk failure soon.

The landing gear hydraulics are particularly worn and the 'Bantha' will struggle with a full load, so gentle landings are going to be critical, especially when the Ryll crates are on board. (OOC: The 40m crates of Ryll will take up 1000 Encumbrance points of space, completely filling the holds of both ships, 32 crates on the 'Bantha' and 8 on the 'Nexus')

The hyperdrive has also been pushed hard and is in need of some attention. Thel has been able to make a few adjustments during his thorough inspection and he feels that the ship could probably make another jump or two in relative safely but that some parts will need replacement very soon and more fuel might be consumed by a jump than normal. In particular, a couple of the power regulators and part of the coolant system are at risk.

After spending most of the transit time to Ryloth in the engine compartment, Thel returns to the cockpit. Calling out over the ship's intercom, he relays his findings to the others, "Well, I found out what's making that racket in hyperspace. Our hyperdrive is shot. I can coax another one, maybe two, jumps out of her, but that's as much as I'll push her. It's also using up more fuel on each jump. We should be fine getting back to Nar Shadaa just so long as we make it back in two jumps."

Leaning back in the pilot's seat, he loudly exhales before continuing, "Here's the bad news. There a couple of power regulators that need replacing, a relatively quick and easy fix, and part of the coolant system is shot. That will also have to be replaced. Of most importance, the landing gear are so thoroughly worn that we can barely land this wreck empty. Full of cargo, I'm going to need all the rest of you extravehicular to hold up the ship to keep it from crushing the struts."

Thel grows still, a thoughtful expression on his face. "struts... huh, I just wonder...

The Bantha and Nexus glide through the atmosphere of Ryloth, buffeted by side winds slightly but the landing is relatively routine. You touch down on a broad expanse of duracrete alongside a few other light freighters. A number of fuel lines snake across the duracrete so it looks as though you can refuel here but there is no sign of any maintenance facilities.

On the edge of the landing fields you can make out an assortment of stalls, some obviously selling droids in various states of repair, others look like food stalls and general supplies. Beyond you can see the desolate landscape of Ryloth, it's little wonder that many Twi'lek cities are below ground

http://images.wikia.com/starwars/images/8/8d/Ryloth_aftermath.jpg

As the systems power down and the ramps descend you spot a small group of Twi'leks moving across the duracrete towards your ships. Four of them are carrying scatterguns and a blaster pistol strapped to their hip. The leader is carrying a datapad and a blaster pistol.

OOC: I'm assuming that at least one of you meets them at the bottom of the ramp

On closer inspection you see that they all have a blue claw tattooed on their right cheek, but apart from this oddity they seem like typical local security forces.

The leader steps forward. "Welcome to Ryloth, I'm Jer'hid Doneeta, Customs Inspector. I'll need to have a look at your cargo manifests. We don't tolerate arms trading here and you can't wear armour or carry any heavy weapons like blaster rifles inside the city. Assuming your business here is legitimate we won't have any trouble."

"Landing here costs 30 credits per ship plus 25 credits per day. You'll have to discuss that and fuel supplies with whoever has the current lease on this pad. The Nabat Militia .." he gestures to his companions .." will also guard your ships for 20 credits a day on the landing fields. Entry into the city requires a pass, 5 credits each. I can organise that for you now."

Glancing at your cargo manifest he raises an eyebrow, "You're coming in virtually empty. So then, what brings you here? I'm warning you that slavers and spice traders aren't welcome." He looks at you suspiciously and the militia adjust their stance slightly, weapons at the ready.

Parts cost money. I personally think that Jemba should be paying for his own ship's parts." He takes a moment to guage the reactions of the others before continuing, "I do have an idea that might reduce the strain on the ship's landing gear. For that we only need some scrap. Back on the Ship

Torrance was taking notes with his Datapad, adding the various parts involved in getting the ship repaired, and figuring out their possible expenses here. He was frowning to himself, figuring that he likely would be spreading himself too thin on this mission, between their "Legitimate Trade", between dealing with the parts and logistics situations, and having to deal with the actual Ryll Spice trade as well. It was, only thankfully, when Thel mentioned having a plan that things at least cleared up a little, as he had to trust the gearhead to do what a gearhead would do.

"Well, keep me apprised of any updates. If you need me to help with anything, let me know." There wasn't much else he could think to say, a lot of things going on, a lot of areas of expertise out of his realm. He had to trust these guys to at least know how to handle what they knew how to handle.

After the Landing

Torrance had shown his datapad to the man, opened up on the file to the manifest, his paltry little cargo of medical supplies, not enough for two freighters to be justified, but he had that covered well enough, "Picking up some raw ore for processing back on Balmorra," he smoothly lied to the militiaman. An ore cargo would be low value compared to the volume, and explain in part why they have so much cargo space compared to what they were bringing in.

He carefully kept himself from wincing at the tone of Nyx, and the blatant confrontation with the militiamen. It wasn't his style for dealing with thugs, heavily armed or otherwise. Much less quasi-official thugs. He had a good feeling that this was just a shakedown, they clearly weren't allied with whoever actually ran this little slab. Militia sounded like just a fancy name for some gang with more blasters than their neighbors, dangerously unstable and not to be trusted.

"Well now, how about you take me to the Harbormaster, I rather get everything squared away at once, if you do understand," Torrance tried to diffuse the situation a little, or give an out for a cowed militiaman. "I'm sure you have files to fill out, and would like to do so in a more comfortable setting, am I correct? You must have some office space here."

Or not, he guessed, if they were just thugs trying to shake him down.

We'll both need at least 46 fuel cells, assuming we can do that jump in 10 days. It'll be more if it takes longer."

"If we go back the way we came, and the jump goes well, then we're looking at maybe 30 fuel cells. Seems to me that we need to refuel the 'Nexus' completely, just to be safe and maybe we should consider the Bothawai route since Nyx has that contact there who can help us if we're forced out of hyperspace."

"Another option is to send the 'Nexus' on ahead since she's got a better hyperdrive. I could do the Gamorr route in 7 to 9 days, burning maybe 42 fuel at worst."

"Almost forgot, Syn and I can stay and watch the ships if you want to go and find our spice dealer."

Both your ship ('The Blue Bantha') and the Ghtroc freighter ('The Hutt's Nexus') have consumed 30 fuel cells each so far. It was 27.5 to get to Ryloth following which you had to travel in realspace to orbit then through the atmosphere and land, another 2.5 cells. The Bantha has much larger fuel cells (it's a bigger ship) so it has 70 left but the 'Nexus' has only 20 left. The trip back will require slightly more fuel too, since you'll have a fully loaded ship, especially if you take the longer route (and therefore will require more power generation). Unless you really go out of your way, the 'Bantha' has enough fuel to get back to Nar Shaddaa but the 'Nexus' doesn't. You could transfer fuel from ship to ship and still have enough to make the return journey if nothing goes wrong, and of course this also depends on which way you go.
On the 'Bantha' you've now consumed 42 consumables (you have 108 left) and on the 'Nexus' they have consumed 14 consumables (they have 66 left). This is including the extra consumables Torrance and Weld purchased.

"Nexus, Bantha responding, Thel here. Unless the Nexus is custom built it contains at most 50 cells. We can buy the fuel or transfer fuel over or a combination of both. Perhaps someone can negotiate with the locals for fuel prices and/or transfer lines." The Corellian responds to Byen

"We've only got 20 left so no way we're making Nar Shaddaa in one jump."

"I'm happy to see what I can do about negotiating a better deal on the fuel. I've cut a few deals in my time. 30 credits per cell is a rip off, even on a rock like this. Failing that, I'm sure I could arrange for a fuel line. Just give me the go ahead."

This is really Torrance's specialty so I want to give Arcturus a chance to post but if he's gone AWOL then I'll get someone to roll for Byen. She has 1eP+2eA against Average difficulty. Arcturus you know Torrance's skill and of course the difficulty will be the same.

I'll go with you to the scrapyard, who knows, maybe we'll find some fun toys there." Nyx sits down in the shade near the exit of the ship and awaits Thel and anyone else who is going to head to the scrapyard.

"Sounds good, Nexus. Let us know if you need any help. An eye on both ships would be great as the rest of us have have the sell/buy and equipment to purchase." Thel replies.

Looking up at Nyx, Thel nods, "Sounds good. Let's get going. I imagine it's outside the city proper. Maybe we can walk there or find a cheap ride."

Thel nods to the others and heads off with Nyx to find a Twi'lek to ask for directions.

Thel nods to the others and heads off with Nyx to find a Twi'lek to ask for directions.

Thel and Nyx stroll across the duracrete towards some of the many stalls on the edge of the landing fields.

Almost immediately you're accosted by a horde of Twilek urchins offering to carry your bags (even though you don't have any), guide you around the city, the Bright Lands, or both. Some are offering "very good deals" and "best quality" regarding slaves, spice and every conceivable vice.

Keeping an obvious eye on potential pickpockets you manage to brush off all but the most persistent and forge ahead where some of the stall holders manage to shoo away the remnants with a stream of Twi'lek abuse. Here the urchins are replaced by equally eager merchants, also offering "high quality merchandise" at the "best prices in Nabat". Most of the stalls seem to be selling items that spacecraft might require, such as prepackaged protein, low level replacement parts (coolant, fuses, cabling, spare fuel cells etc) as well as a number of stalls selling droids, sidearms and ammunition, medikits and stimpacks, datapads, comlinks etc. In short pretty much every common item of technology you can think of. Many look to be secondhand at best.

As you stroll through the makeshift bazaar your attention is drawn to the smell of cooking meat wafting across from a temporary looking cantina set up under a huge shade cloth that is providing some relief from the baking sun. A number of non Twi'lek's seem to be inside. The cantina, such as it is, appears to be doing a relatively good trade. A Twi'lek waitress is serving and wiping tables while a tall male Twi'lek is busy frying some unidentifiable but delicious smelling chunks of meat over a barbecue pit. A human woman is working the bar and seems to be in overall charge.

Something about the place seems promising or maybe it's just the smell of cooking meat and your rumbling stomachs. Possibly it's the idea of a cold drink. Either way, you duck under the edge of the shade cloth and survey the 'establishment'.

Apart from the staff, there is a Male Human and Aqualish sitting at the bar drinking and talking to one another. They look like freighter crew. At one of the tables sits a female Sullustran with a half finished drink that she seems to be taking her time with. At another table, digging into a plate of food is a middle aged Twi'lek female who is flicking through information on a datapad while she eats. At a third table a male Bothan is deep in conversation with a young male Twi'lek. There are another three unoccupied tables and two more seats at the bar.

Captain Byen strolls across the duracrete to talk to Won'wetu, the Twi'lek who holds the lease on your landing pad. "So my friend, turns out our ship could use a bit of fuel, 30 credits is a bit steep though. Shall we start with a more reasonable figure ..."

Always a need for his presence. Torrance Cade knew this place was a pack of vipers, much like the spaceport back home. Every desperate, opportunistic scavenger, con man, and outright thief trying to take advantage of a fresh face who didn't seem to know any better. The sad thing is... he really didn't know better. Not about Ryloth. Never imagined he would be on that rock to pick up more than a few tidbits of cursory information on it after all. He had no idea who was really in power, what organizations ran what, he had no friends, no family, no support what so ever out here other than the violent thugs he happened to be traveling with and the few grifters he presumed the less violent looking ones were.

Perfect mark. Still, he at least knew he was a perfect mark. And as such he played it up, as he came to deal with Won'wetu, waving down Captain Byen a little. He had his casual business wear on, standing prim and proper, every bit of his stance speaking of power and confidence that he didn't really feel in this situation.

Haggling 101, look insulted. And that he did, scoffing as he looked around what was little more than a patch of cement out in the desert. How lousy it was with thieves, beggars, and this 'militia', he let his disdain clearly show on his face as he came up to the so called Dock Owner. He let that expression hang open, and let the Twi'lek feel how unsatisfied he was.

"They had assured me that Ryloth was a world well used to dealing with top quality free traders," he scoffed at Won'wetu, "I've been in feral swamps of the Unexplored Territories that ran cleaner, more orderly docks!" The point hammered home as he gestured towards one of his crewmates getting mobbed by beggar children and pickpockets. "Why look at this ramshackle, night fly set up? I bet you thin your fuel and glue your parts! I would hardly pay more than 10 credits a cell, and 5 credits per day of berthing!"

Classical haggling, putting someone on the backfoot, make them defensive, and cut down the price. He only hoped that by sticking to the basics it'd work here.

Welp, throwing some Negotiation Dice for the Haggle.

Won'wetu's jaw drops at Torrance's opening offer. Rather than laughing it off as ridiculous he is clearly convinced of the seriousness and quickly stammers a reply, "I er, ah, best-quality er .." he swallows and recovers himself but is clearly on the back foot, "I can assure you that my fuel is not diluted but as a gesture of goodwill, for such an experienced traveler I am sure we could come to a more equitable arrangement ..."

Eventually after a furious session of haggling, Won'wetu leaves looking very unhappy and sweating profusely. He scurries off to the shade of the cantina and orders a stiff drink.

Torrance has beaten him down to 15 credits per unit of fuel and 8 credits per day berthing which includes free loan of fuel lines and an astromech droid for repairs.

Add a Boost dice (+1eB on Orokos) to any future negotiations with Won'wetu

One problem down... about 5 more to go, as Torrance Cade finished up negotiations with the Harbor Master. It gave him a bit of confidence that this little mission might go easier than he could have hoped. Every success bringing him noticeable confidence, he headed out for the Cantina near the docks, figuring that their contact likely would reach him either over Commlink with one of the ship (Or himself directly), or would end up meeting him there as a convenient location.

Not only that... well... it was a good enough place to start seeing about unloading those stims. At least it was a more attractive option to him than wandering around the desert cities, getting blasted by the sun of Ryloth, and not really knowing where he was going. So he settled into the Cantina, getting a table in a relatively open place. Not exactly the Corner Booth of Defensible Blaster Fire with his back to the wall, he wanted people to be about him, wanted to be able to hear snippets of conversation, and look more like the approachable Perfectly Legitimate Businessman that he claimed to be than some smuggler looking out for bounty hunters or peace officers after all.

Torrance ducked under the shade cloth and took a seat at one of the empty tables. Nyx and Thel were at the bar chatting to the Human barwoman, the Human and Aqualish at the bar next to them were clearly engaged in their own conversation about hyperspace routes and cargo runs. A Sullustran female at a nearby table is clearly fidgety but keeping quiet. The younger Twi'lek male and his Bothan companion are talking about exploring the Bright Lands, it sounds as though the young Twi'lek is selling his services as a guide and the Bothan seems interested though cautious. The older Twi'lek woman is clearly absorbed in her datapad, she seems to be reading a lengthy file of some sort. The Twi'lek waitress does the rounds, straightening chairs, collecting glasses and wiping tables. She stops and gives Torrance a slight smile, "Can I get you anything?"

Okay, at this point I'm just going to try to get the group together in order to plan our next move from there. I'll also try to not interfere with the character's personalities too much.

After getting directions to the scrap yard, Thel and Nyx thank the bartender and head into the sunlight, staying away from any prying ears.

"So what's the plan now?" Nyx asks the bothan, who grunts and looks back towards the street.

"I say we head back to the ship, put that speeder to good use. We'll head out to the scrap yard, see what parts we can find and get back. Hopefully our partners can handle themselves while we're gone,"

"Sounds like a plan," Nyx agrees, then she nods towards Torrance, who seems to have also found the bar. "Speaking of, should we take the diplomat with us and make sure he doesn't get blasted by the local thugs?" Thel looks towards Torrance for a second, then shakes his head, smiling slightly.

"Nah, I'm sure he can handle himself," Thel replies. "C'mon, let's not waste any more time."
<"I couldn't help but notice that everyone's run off during an important mission,"> Weld says irritably to Zack, squinting in the sunlight. <"Care to tell me what's going on?"> After getting caught up, the Rodian sighed in frustration.

<"Well that's just perfect. We're losing credits, the ship's a piece of junk, and there's no sign of the contact,"> Weld shook his head and looked at his surroundings, thinking of a plan of action. <"We should get everyone together and discuss our next plan of action,"> he finally said to Zack. <"We'll leave the sight-seeing until after the ship is fixed.">

The Bothan twirled his force pike in frustration, "We have a job to do and I never back out of a contract. Finding this Twi'lek spice merchant and fulfilling our deal with Jemba is our priority. I say we head for the city. Someone there will have heard of Vej'zusal."

Just then a figure emerges from the Ghtroc freighter, someone you have never seen before. A tall figure clad in full laminate armour (including a full faced helmet) and carrying a blaster rifle over his shoulder. He turns towards you and casually strolls over.

Torrance gave the waitress a bright, friendly smile, putting his best foot forward, "Just something cold, doesn't quite matter what, as long as it will take the edge off the heat," he wasn't exactly used to desert worlds yet, after all. And he wanted everything to seem as normal as possible while he was here. Another spacer merchant coming down off a long trip. Keep his body language open and relaxed, looking like he wouldn't mind company. Let people come to him rather than seek them out. His ears were perked, picking out snippets of conversation as they went on nearby in the cantina, knowing that a bit of information was going to be a key asset in the coming days here. There was only so much you could get from databases or the rumors of people who had never actually been there. So much he didn't know about, who was their contact, who was moving spice here, what was the militia doing and how was it involved, heck, where was he going to offload their little cargo for their perfectly legitimate business?

The waitress smiles back and wanders off, hips swaying. You can see why Twi'leks have a reputation for sensuality, every movement is a work of art.
She returns shortly with a tall glass of iced water, flavoured with a slice of fruit. As she passes the Sullustran's table you notice a brief exchange of words, which you strain to over hear.
Moving on to your table she delivers the drink looking slightly flustered. Placing the drink before you she smiles, "This should do the trick, 5 credits please." She glances at the Sullustran as she wipes your table again, even though it's perfectly clean. The drink is delicious and very refreshing in the oppressive heat. "So, what brings a nice looking guy like you to Nabat?"

My roll for Droppin' Eaves: http://orokos.com/roll/407701

It's 1 Failure, with 3 Advantage. I can't even begin to guess what that actually means.

Torrance pulled out his minor expenses account credit stick, paying for the drink with casual calm and precise movements, showing a bit more "refined" manners than the typical spacer scum that might come through, still trying to maintain the cover identity at all times of a refined merchant from more "civilized" lands than the frontier dirtballs where "manners" might be better described as cleaning off your vibroknife after shanking someone in the street.

As he saw the Waitress putting on her sway and performance, he wondered how much of it was just natural to their species, or if it was some learned trait from dealing with spacers who probably hadn't seen a decent piece in weeks. It did have an appeal, he had to admit, pondering if he was getting marked out himself as some sort of con prey, the old, classic pretty face stringing someone along. It'd make sense, considering his cover as a reputable and high class merchant here, with credits to spend and being more "worldly" as it were.

This was just cemented more when she sat down, and started to chat him up. Maybe working some angle with the Sullustran that would have to be paid off after he hasseled "his" girl? Or straight up prostitution? Hard to tell, but he was expecting trouble.

Still, know there is a trap, and you can turn it around. So he gave the waitress his best, winning smile. Letting the charm radiate off him as a confident, powerful man in his own regard, "Business primarily. I have a cargo hold full of first class medical supplies... however..." he played it up, showing a momentary bit of distress 'slipping' from the mask of his smile, "It seems my contact brokered a deal with someone else. So I have a full cargo, and no buyer," why not give it a shot, a cantina waitress on the docks was bound to hear quite a bit about trade, particularly if she went to the usual vamping display with every merchant who came through.

"Of course, it also means I have to find a new cargo to take out of here as well..." drop that out, let her chew on it. With as petty as the people here seemed to be, he expected that she would "Just happen" to have some cousin who "just happened" to have a surplus of something for him to perhaps look at picking up.

I'm going to guess Charm for spinning the tale, looking sympathetic, and getting on her good side. Deception maybe, but same dice pool for me either way.

Torrance strained to eavesdrop on the waitress and the Sullustran woman. He caught a couple of words "spice", "next" and a name, which sounded a lot like "Vej'zusal". The Twi'lek waitress definitely reacted to the name but exactly what she was thinking (was it shock? fear? anger?) was difficult to tell. The Sullustran seems to be quite edgy and very anxious, not at all in charge of the situation or her emotions. You notice a bead of sweat dripping down her face. You just wish they would speak up.

Torrance's mention of a potential cargo draws a stunned reaction from the waitress. She looks like she's been slapped, "If you're looking for slaves buster, you've come to the wrong place, take your filthy trade somewhere else!" She pauses, takes a breath and calms down slightly. "As for your medical supplies, try Won'wetu, your ship is on his pad. The militia will probably give you a decent deal too, they're always beating someone up. Ever since they took over it's been more peaceful round here but that peace comes at a cost, cross 'em and well .. things happen" She glances sideways at the Sullustran then rubs furiously at an imaginary spot on your table before spinning on her heel and sauntering off towards the kitchen.

Torrances shock at the mention of 'Slaves' was clear enough. It wasn't really a thing back home, and he didn't expect it really, or did it cross his mind until the waitress mentioned it. Of course sure enough the Hutts back on Nar Shadaa had slaves, but he presumed that was just something about Hutt Space, not exactly a galaxy wide status.

Well, that much was a bust. He had the local harbormaster well snowed enough, he probably could push the man. But it'd be muddled business, likely to have him try to weasel out by 'trading' the docking in lieu of payment or, better yet, actual trade. He sighed a bit, and went back to his drink, taking a few slow sips, enjoying the cool water and crisp taste, trying to put the bad step out of mind.

After a few moments to chill and find his equilibrium again, he pulled out his Commlink, flipping it to the codes used back on the hunk of junk that they came in on. "Doctor... would you please come and have a drink with me, I think we could use the break," he said, leaving it to nothing else. He was well aware that how he was trying to listen, someone else might be listening too much the "slaver" that he was now pegged as, particularly with the public display of the waitress. He flipped off the commlink as soon as he finished, not wanting whatever the Rodian said to possibly lead to an information leak. He seemed to have a calm enough head on his shoulders, but no reason to give a chance if he didn't have to.

With that Jose stepped off the loading ramp and into the sunlight and dust.

Almost as soon as he thanked his lucky stars he cursed at the thought of still being in debt to the bloody Hutts.

Nyx, Moss and Thel are sitting under the shade of the HT-2200's landing ramp when their attention is drawn to a light freighter coming in to land. It's a YT-1760 and it's coming in low and fast, clearly piloted by someone who knows their stuff. It does a quick pass of the landing strips and swings around before gently coming to rest 100 metres away. With a hiss of steam the hydraulic ramp lowers and two heavily armoured figures stroll out followed at a discreet distance by a green skinned Rodian.

Turning back to their discussion, Nyx, Mos and Thel don't notice the Rodian using a scanner to check their identity before nodding to his armoured colleagues who raise their guns and start firing.

Apex, Nyreen and Knuto you have complete surprise so I'll let you all do a maneuver and an action before any of the others respond. You're at medium range (or long if you prefer, just let me know)

Thel is a Corellian Human wearing a nomad greatcoat with a sword and two pistols

Nyx killed a noble on Coruscant (20), Thel killed an Imperial officer in a duel (15), and Moss is wanted by some old gangland enemies on Nar Shaddaa (10) Jemba has given you use of the ship, with instructions to collect these bounties and then make sure that his spice is safely delivered to Nar Shaddaa. While Nyreen was cuffing their targets she secured the situation by keeping her blaster system activated and pointed at them. Their targets seemed cooperative enough and appearently wagered they had better chances braving those that placed the bountys on their heads. A smart choice. Apex would not hesitate to shoot them down in an instance if one of them should even do as much as twitch funny. They had both nearly lost the Old Man to the bloody Imperials...so Apex was even more vigilant than usual.

She nodded towards the young Mandalorian woman and cuffed their last target.

This job seemed to look pretty well so far. Now that they had secured their bountys they only needed to secure the spice and off they were to a nice pay day. The stars knew they could use it.

"Now that was easier than expected. You guys seem rather rather kooperative. I assume the Spice you already loaded the Spice aboard? And where's the rest of the crew, there were supposed to be more."

Her low and raspy voice was distorted into a threatening growl through the speaker system of her helmet.

The whining of the boy was answered by a vox-distorted laugh from Apex.

"You're a clever lad, you'll figure something out. In your case I would be more worried what the Imps will do with you. Last thing I heard was that they don't like people who kill their officers."

She made another sweeping glance of the room just to make sure that they couldn't use anything within to escape and then adressed all of them once more.

"You've all been smart so far. You should keep that up. If even one of you tries to run, you're dead...all of you. So don't even think about it."

She then left the cabin and closed and sealed the door behind her. On their way out of the ship, she stopped for a moment to remove a duct vent and hide a surveillance tagger behind it. Should these punks act stupid and decide to run they should have an easier time tracking them again.

Torrance was still at the cantina, sipping his sadly warming up water, quite relaxed when he noticed Jose and Weld drawing up. Throwing down a few more credits for the two to cover their drinks, he gestured for them to sit down with a casual wave. "Good to see you all getting off that bucket of bolts, must be hotter than a Gundark's Drawers in the desert sun."

Maybe it was the water, or a slight breeze, but for whatever reason Torrance seemed quite amicable, and quite comfortable under the shade of the Cantina. He waited for them to take a seat, order up from the/one of the waitresses, and take a few drinks themselves before he started up. It was then that he leaned forwards towards them, speaking softly so his voice wouldn't carry so far.

"Now as you all know, we've had some troubles here. And I'm in the process of seeing most of them solved. However... there's a few good deeds we must do, not just for the sake of the purity of our minds, but also for our own benefit." He glanced at the two of them, measuring their responses before he continued on, "I'm sure you've all noticed the state of things here," his eyes flicked over towards where one might spot the nearest member of the local militia presence, or towards the young Twi'lek hassling people for work as a Guide.

His eyes focused back on Weld and Jose, head tossing towards the kitchen a little, "Contact the waitress here. Weld, let her know you're a doctor, and will treat some of the local militia victims for free, mission of mercy. Jose? Do what you can to help him with it. I'm expecting the local militia might hassle you, if you're interfering with their rackets. Do interfere with their rackets." He smiled to himself, letting that grin show on his face in a toothless smile.

It was then he pulled out his commlink, talking back to said bucket of bolts. The Thugs had their place in his plan, after all. "The rest of you, please get down here, you're missing vital information related to our business." Letting it ring out to, well, whoever answered the comms after all.

"As for me... well... I have my own roles to play," He took another sip from his drink, savoring it.

Torrance shrugged, "Not my type," he told Jose, simple as that, he had no more need to elaborate, but his tone said he wasn't interested in the local lekku.

"Getting our cargo is one step. Being able to leave this world in one piece is another. This helps with the latter. As for the former... well that's what our muscle is here for," he was still waiting for a response from the Thugs, his eyes momentarily shifting towards one of the other customers here at the cantina, still keeping track of his mark. They did need some local information, and he had pegged out that Sullustran as being the mark for that task.

No need to press further, the question had been asked and answered so all good.

Turning on the com link,
"Come to us at the Cantina, Knuto. At least that way we can shout you a drink and figure out what's going on"

Torrance replied on the commlink a moment later, "Come on down to the cantina, we're having drinks, escaping the heat, might as well have more company and turn it into a party."

He clicked the Commlink off, a bit unsettled by it. Sudden changes were not good after all. It was likely it was on the up and up. Outside of the crew, no one knew he worked for Jemba at all, or even that he had come form Nar Shadaa, following the insane new route that their pilot had charted after all. Still, it could be legitimate, and thus Hutt Related, so it was worth being careful enough.

He looked to Jose and Weld, "... new hires coming in, do put on a nice face for them," there was a subtle shifting of Torrance's posture in the chair, but otherwise he seemed to be just like he was before, nursing his drink, and having a soft, pleasant conversation with his crewmates.

Apex smiled below her helmet as she looked after her sister strolling towards the other two ships while fumbling with her utility belt. She was actually glad, that she never got any gifts for her birthday from Nyreen.

She turned her attention to the Rodian.

"Tell 'em we're coming to them once my little sis is done with wrapping up the presents."

While she waited for Nyreen to return she inspected the stuff they lifted from their unfortunate targets...not enough blasters in her mind. Sure she enjoyed a good brawl, especially with her upgrade, but she'd always prefer a trustworthy blaster over some exotic blade.

When she heard over the com, that one of the others was suspicious about the nature of their freight Apex grimaced under her helmet. If that was true, she had to talk to Nyreen about it. She was morally flexible, yes, but there were things she didn't want to participate in and slave trading was one of those things. Sure as bounty hunters they had a reputation to uphold. But Jemba could fragging screw himself if this was about slaves.

Torrance shrugged, "I leave it up to you," he left it at that. Blasting wasn't really his style. Though he had shifted his body to quickly aim his own small, sleek weapon if need be. It was already flipped to "Stun", the setting he always left it on, not having much taste for killing himself, and figuring a stun blast to the face was good enough to get away from trouble, all that he really sought to do with his pistol. He certainly wasn't looking to become a legendary gunslinger. Then again he hadn't pulled it out, and without a sharp eye it'd probably be hard to notice he was armed at all, much less in a position to do something with it.

Jose always got twitchy while waiting, never a good sign for someone who has fallen into chasing odd jobs. All too often the target had to be watched for a few days, work out any patterns, who they normally talk to, what shops they visit and so on. The saving grace was the suit of armour. It's difficult to tell what's going on behind a visor.
Should have left the bloody thing on and not worried about a drink, well too late for that thought, Jose mentally rebuked himself!

Time's ticking so let's see what we can find out..

Jose motioned for the Twi'lek waitress to come over.
Once she had arrived he launched into his thoughts, in a quiet voice, so as not to carry to far.

"M'Lady, My friend and I find ourselves in a bit of an odd predicament and hope you could help. Before I go on, I'd like you to do one thing for me"
Noticing the flinch of the Twi'lek and change in posture, Jose quickly moves on

"No not that, well not right now" he manages to say with a smile that is quickly extinguished with a look that speaks volumes emminiating from the waitress. Idiot, Jose mentally chastises himself, she's probably heard it all before.

"If my worst fears are confirmed by you, could I please ask you to simple state the price of a drink, once I've finished"
"As I was saying, my friend and I are not usually thrust into the Merchant world and are trying to find our way. Our employer has sent us here with the rather vague directions that are simply to seek out the R'lyek Clan on Ryloth for a cargo of Ryll spice. Now my friend here and I are VERY concerned that what we think spice means and what our employer means by spice may be two different things!"
"So I must ask, on this rock, does Spice mean slaves?

OOC: Nice bit of dialogue so I'll dispense with the need to roll

The waitress pauses, blinks then cracks a grin. She lowers her voice, "You boys are really out of your depth aren't you? Maybe I misjudged your friend here. 'Spice' means spice, but there's 'spice' and there's 'spice'. Some will make you feel good, some will make you feel anything but. Round here 'spice' usually means Ryll"

"As for the R'lyek, you've come to the wrong place. Doneeta rules here now. Those of us who aren't clan don't get much of a look in. Step out of line and the militia come knocking."

Torrance had frowned a little at it, but shrugged it off as things seemed to go well, "I take it this Doneeta though does a lot of slave trading, thus your presumption about me," it seemed a safe enough assumption now that the Waitress had opened up a little. He set down his glass, and smoothed out his clothes a little, seemingly an unconscious little nervous tick.

"Well it all depends on what you want, Miss...?" he let the words hang in the air, so that the waitress could introduce herself. He didn't know much about Ryloth, clearly, but there was some things that was just near galaxy wide enough that he could latch onto. "Lots of opportunities for someone with a good head on their shoulders, and some quick wits," he dangled that out there, credits was one thing, but if he was reading it right, the Twi'lek's problems ran a bit deeper than just a handful of credits. Vague promises of a better situation might have gotten him somewhere. A trip off world? A semi-permanent source of extra income over a single time payout? Let her fill in what it meant, and thus give Torrance a glimpse at what she really wanted.

Not too far from the front to be seen from the street.
Not to far from the back to miss anyone coming in, plus a few ways to escape in a hurry.

The waitress busies herself moving a couple of tables so you can all sit close enough together to converse without speaking too loudly. She saunters off and comes back with a tray of drinks, "That'll be 35 credits." She sits and eyes you all off. "While you work out which of you is getting the tab, I'll lay out my cards. I'm after passage off world, preferably to Corellia or at least to somewhere with a better spaceport. Of course, a girl has to eat too and so a couple of hundred credits would help out nicely, more if you can't take me straight to Corellia, half of it up front, the rest when we leave."
She pauses then continues, lowering her voice slightly, "So, I think I know what you're after and why you want Vej'zusal. Non-Twi'leks will have trouble finding him in Nabat so you'll need help. Any more info than that will cost you."

Doesn't really matter as long as it's aligned with me I don't really care, thinks Jose.
She's motivated and willing to help, so let's see how this goes..

"Nice to meet you Nyreen" Jose says making eye contact with the brash, confident Bounty Hunter, " same goes for you Apex" and nod or recognition to her before moving on "and you Knuto".
"I hope I'm not on your list anytime in the future" he says with a smile.
"welcome to the madness" and raises his glass in a toast "To new alliances".

Turning to Ela, as that's what Jose has decided to call her until told otherwise,
"My dear Ela. We'd all like a few hundreds credits, that's why we are all here. I can shout for the drinks, not a worry, as a sign of a new joining of forces". Jose hands over the creds.

"I know it's not just up to me, but how about instead of an up front couple of hundred credits, you get an equal share of the profits?"
Jose paused waiting to gauge the reactions of the others before continuing "Join us and roll the dice, see what happens."

Where did you say you were from again?" Someone mentions "Nar Shaddaa" to which she responds, "Ah, that makes sense. Well that would do nicely as a destination, I guess I can get a ride to Corellia from there."
She stands, "I'd better get back to work while you discuss the offer, call me over when you've made a decision." She wanders off, doing a round of the tables, clearing the Twi'lek woman's plate and stopping at the Sullustran woman's table again where a short conversation ensues. You see the Sullustran ask a couple of questions and Elav'chir shake her head in reply.
Meanwhile, the two freighter crew at the bar have got up to leave, casting a nervous glance in your direction. The Bothan and young Twi'lek are also leaving.

So far Apex had remained silent and only listened in on the conservation as it was her custom. She wasn't the best in social situations, not anymore, the only she really communicated with was her sister who, by now could tell pretty well what she was thinking with her even having to say a word.

She was relieved that this was not about live cargo, that would've made the whole thing very unpleasent. Sure, she was a bounty hunter and killed people for money if need be, but the way she saw it she was just a glorified weapon for those with the money to afford her.

When the drinks came, Apex lifted her helmet revealing her scarred face (http://i.imgur.com/PBjbW6d.jpg) beneath. Just the tip of the iceberg, really. If one where to remove her armor that the rest of her body didn't look any better. Once she had been a dancer and pleasure worker in the harem of a Hutt, but nothing of that was to be seen anymore. The injuries had not only destroyed her looks and right arm, but also the grace she had in her movement, which was further emphasized by her asymmetrical synthetic arm. She wouldn't charm anyone anytime soon, but in her line of work her appearence could be an advantage.

When she heard how Jose offered the Twi'lek waitress a full share on the job she gave Nyreen a meaningful look. She did not like that development, they had bills to pay and sharing the money through more people meant less for them. Well at least the bounty for the three punks would be theirs to take, well Knuto was entitled to a share she supposed.

When the waitress left she flashed her eyes at Jose: "That how you make your deals, mate? They ask for a finger and you give them the entire hand? I get it, she's pretty, enough so that I'd even give her ride off this planet for free but a full..."

Apex paused as she noticed how several people left the cantina at the same time, with two of them even glancing over at their table.

"Ok, you know these guys?" Apex asked the others while she produced her surveillance remote from her belt and set it to follow those that had just left.

Who would be so vile as to do that to another ??
Jose noticed Apex's eye contact but didn't look away. He wasn't sure if removing the helmet was to get a shock reaction or to make Apex appear more terrifying than she was before, clad in her armour, artificial arm and confident "Don't screw with me" walk.
Still looking directly at Apex, Jose said with a slight, knowing smile and a gentle shrug of his shoulders:
"Not all of us have our scars on the outside."

Looking towards Torrence,
"I'm just heading back to the Bantha to, err, check the cannons in the underside turret. The last ship to arrive was a bit of a surprise and I'd like to not repeat that just yet."
His smile widened as his face disappeared back into his helmet, "Give me a yell if you need me, I'll keep up over comms".

A share, of what though Torrance wondered. They weren't being paid a lump sum or a percentage on the cargo. Just a flat 500 credits a head per week of work at this point. Work for hire while testing themselves out. An odd offer, he wasn't really certain what it was that Jose was up to, or how that'd go about souring some deals down the road.

He finally finished his drink, feeling a bit exasperated by the entire situation, but at least things were moving. Directions he might not have expected, but it was movement. Things in the Cantina were breaking up a little, causing him to weigh and measure the crowd as it moved, figuring out just what exactly the freighter crew was worked up by, hopefully just the heavily armored, heavily armed thugs, simple fear, not much else.

Near as I could figure a "Spot a minor detail/feeling and figure it out" skill would be Cool. So using Cool to get a read on the Freighter crew.

1 Success, 1 Threat, 1 Triumph. Quite the Mixed Bag I suppose.

"Division of Labor, my new friend," Torrance told Knuto easily, having had a bit with the trip over and Wade to get used to Rodians, something he had never really seen before he left his home. Still you got over unusual after sharing a cramped space on a hyperspace trip. "If you extend your trust to me, I'll get us past any customs picket. And I'll let you know if things don't go according to plan. Right now I take it yours skill set," or so he had guessed from the way they had entered, and their gearing, "Might be better set up tracking down our contact. Well unless you want to just tag along, follow directions, and cover my back as I set everything in motion." Not an invitation he would have extended to everyone here, but the last trip out with a Rodian went well, the man kept his cool well and played along, simple little superstition as it was, you just didn't ruin good patterns.

"Anyway... if no one else has need, I will need at least to discuss a few tidbits with our local hire," he told everyone else there, "I won't monopolize her time," he smiled, throwing a look at Jose, returning the little jab he took earlier at Torrance's supposed motive upon wanting to help the waitress's friends as he walked away.

Presuming no one objected, he'd raise his hand to call Elav'chir back over once again.

OOC: 1 Success, 1 Threat and 1 Triumph, a mixed bag indeed. It would have been more of a Perception roll in the circumstances I think but I won't get you to redo it and thereby lose your triumph. Also, just a note on the last few posts re: payment, the employment deal was 500 credits a week plus 10% of the profits from cargo runs (see first IC post) and Jemba would consider that the bounties on Nyx, Thel and Moss would be his to collect since he's the boss. He would 'probably' award a bonus though, especially since they're alive

Torrance thinks that the freighter crew are probably just a bit alarmed by the presence of so many heavily armed and armored figures in the cantina. What he has noticed in addition is that the Twi'lek who was in the kitchen, seems to have disappeared. As Torrance then does a quick look around the area, he notices half a dozen Nabat militia heading in your direction. They're a couple of hundred metres away at present (218 yards)

"Incoming," Torrance warns the others, seeing the Militia coming in, giving them time to adjust to what was going on. "They're a bit... skittish. Thugs looking to expand and consolidate their territory," he filled in the new bounty hunters. At least that was the read he had gotten on them. Overly aggressive, overly cautious, probably called over to handle the "danger" that three bounty hunters sitting back, sipping their drinks in a cantina causing no trouble posed. Far from the quality of Professionals he preferred to deal with in his life.

"If you don't mind, do keep your eyes on me, but lets try to resolve this without provoking the trading of Blaster fire... no one tends to win when that happens." He smiled to the group, pushing away from the table. Calm, relaxed, not visible armed in the least, or armored for that matter, he finally left the shade of the Cantina to walk out towards the Militia boys, nice and open, smile on his face, throwing a little wave to them.

"Just in time, we were just talking about you!" he greeted them cheerfully, as if they were all old friends here, even as he walked towards the Militia, not approach too close to make the jumpy men possible do something stupid, but definitely closing the distance with them. Everything about his demeanor relaxed and quiet, "I had a business opportunity to offer your bosses, as opportunities have changed and evolved. Should be quite lucrative for both of us, well as long as you're interested in..." it was only then that he looked down, seeming to note that they were armed, and apparently on a mission. Glancing back over his shoulder towards where they had been walking. "Oh, I presume someone called about the slight unpleasantness, no worries, it is over, and they have been nothing but polite customers," he assured them as he looked back to the militia, "Only here as security for me and mine, I promise you that they'll cause you no trouble, but you can't blame our contact for being cautious, you do here so many rumors about the Outer Rim Territories, pirates, raiders, rebels," he shrugged it off, trying to dismissively diffuse the situation before it became something more.

"Anyway, business opportunities! A fortunate little meeting indeed!" He raised up one finger, asking them to wait, "My buyer fell through, so I do have a full cargo, and have been looking to do some... discrete business," he suggested, letting them fill in the gap. "Here's my commlink code," he rattled it off, just slow enough for some of the militia to absorb it, "Have whoever does your buying contact me, and we might just come to terms." All in all, the calm, polite merchant that he had seemed to be this entire trip here. Confident in his delivery, not the least disturbed by the thuggish nature of the militia beyond noticing that they were likely called for security at the cantina. And he hoped to have started something up, while distracting them from starting a firefight.

Well I'm guessing Charm or Deception, honestly it's the same dice either way for me.

Well, 0 all round isn't a failure but it's not a success either. That IS an unusual result though. I'll give you a boost dice (+1eB) for your next interaction with the militia though due to your good roleplaying
Then militia leader pauses and blinks at Torrance. "Ok, I'll pass that on Mr .. what did you say your name was?"

He looks confused and for a moment is off guard then moves to step around Torrance. "Excuse me sir but I have a job to do." The militia move forward towards the cantina taking up positions to cover the leader and another militiaman as they duck under the shade cloth and look around. The Sullustran woman squeaks in fright and takes off in a hurry only to be apprehended by one of the militia outside. The two inside the cantina quickly spot Elav'chir and move towards her, "You! You're coming with us!"

The situation - You have two militia 'inside' the cantina (remember it's just a big shade cloth covering the tables etc) and four 'outside' spread around the edge. One of these is busy cuffing the Sullustran. None of them seem too focused on any of the PCs at present. All of the militia are armed with an 8 gauge scatter gun and light blaster pistol (holstered on their hip). They're wearing heavy clothing
You can all have a maneuver and action prior to their entrance if you like, thanks to Torrance's warning.

Making sure she can see the door, her feet still up on the table she waits with her rifle over her legs, calling out to the men, "Now now what exactly is going on here? You are arresting a member of my crew and I would like to know why." A little glance at Apex lets her know to be ready.

Jose was acutely aware of the dilemma he was in.
Stay at the freighters and check the incoming boat, or head back to re inforce.
Easy choice.
Turning quickly he jogged back towards the Cantina.
Slowing down, he began walking, paying attention to all the possible avenues.
Quickly deciding to stay on the main drag, Jose began to walk more purposefully towards the Cantina, blaster held ready.
He stopped a short way from the landing pad, ready to double back if needed.
"Holding position just off the landing pad, covering the main route from the Cantina" he said into the Commlink.
We really need another channel for when it hits the fan, he thought.
"Sit Rep please when able", "Sorry Situation Report when able".

Apex had to admit that she was impressed by how Torrence just walked towards the armed militia that came towards them, that took some guts and confidence. However the thugs more or less ignored him and moved past him to apprehend the Sullustan Apex had spent little attention to. She now wished she had, maybe she had a bounty on her head. In any event she did not care too much about why those guys wanted her.

Ela was another matter. Even if she didn't fully agree to let her fully in on the job she respected the decision of the rest of the group. Starting an argument over it simply wasn't worth it.

Still it had her in agitated mood and the militia who was about to take away their only lead was really testing her patience. This was getting more complicated by the minute and she had enough of it. She wished Nyreen hadn't called Ela part of their crew...as bounty hunters they had more...elegant ways.

Apex stood up abruptly up, leaving her helmet behind on the table and walked towards the leader of the militia, flashing her eyes at him with barely contained anger. The twin blaster-cannons mounted on her arm were audibly locked and loaded while sliding out of their protective casing via a single thought.

"I don't have time for this frack! I'm a Hunter and have a contract and the Twi'lek is part of that contract. If you take her in you're standing between me and my quarry..."

She left the sentence unfinished, allowing the militia commander to fill in the unspoken threat that hung in the air.

Torrance followed the militiamen, as they walked towards the cantina, harrying their steps as he spoke. "Torrance, Torrance Cade, Free Trader in good standing with the Commerce Guild on Balmorra," he informed the militiaman, as if it meant something, though he doubted it actually did to the rank and file strongarm grunts of a planetbound syndicate. Name, Title, Connection though, that simple pattern should rattle around his skull and say that perhaps he wasn't someone who should be blown off, at least he hoped.

He mentally winced when he heard the Bounty Hunter extend his protection to the Waitress. Not that he wouldn't have done it himself, but it wasn't the way he would have gone with it. And the female hunter seemed to be working a different tract, muddying the waters. Maybe it'd confuse the militia, but it wasn't likely to diffuse the situation, as he saw. And if blaster bolts were flying, well... he was one of the ones least likely to be able to handle himself from what he could see, not exactly a position that he wanted to be in.

"Now now now!" he spoke up loudly, to both the Militiamen and the Bounty Hunters, stride a few steps forward to block the line between the Militiaman he had been talking to, and the Waitress that they were after. His hands were up, towards both of them as if holding them apart, or at least signalling for a delaying of Blasters out. "It seems here you have a conflict of interests. And well... this place was a nice little watering hole, I'd hate for it to get the ozone smell of blaster fire and cordite, that just tends to linger for days, now doesn't it? Really ruins the atmosphere."

He smiled at the Militiaman, and at the female bounty hunter, letting it all hang out, confident and brave, if nothing else. With his head turned so the Militia couldn't see, he gave Elav'chir a wink, letting her know the best he could that he was working on making it okay.

"Now I presume this tart is some sort of criminal, disturbing the peace or fleeing the righteous justice that your men have worked hard to establish here, correct?" a little flattery never hurt, particularly with the low ranking thugs, "You've been very professional, so I have no doubts of the justice being done here. However..." he turned to the female bounty hunter, "I presume that she has outlying crimes, perhaps offworld at that? Having conned or robbed some spacer, using this cantina as cover?" Feeding a simple little story, blatantly, but he kept the questioning tone in his voice that made it sound like he was spitballing more than anything.

"Now..." he turned back to the Militiaman, "It seems to me this Bounty Hunter is quite determined, and from the look of her, well used to violence. That is not the armor of someone who hasn't exactly used their blaster in anger before, if you know what I mean. Myself, as a simple, honest merchant, unarmed and unarmored, tend to find avoiding blaster fire is always preferable to hoping you have the advantage."

"So... how about a simple compromise? You know where my ship is, and of course my name and commlink code. I can rig up a simple holding cell to keep this criminal locked down, while the bounty hunter's employer, and your boss work out who has the proper jurisdiction and stronger claim to this woman. I will of course keep her confined and well cared for until it is decided which form of justice she deserves most. And for a simple, modest fee at that." Had to add in the profit angle, after all, to make it seem like he was a self serving merchant looking for an easy payday while waiting for a cargo transfer, rather than sticking his neck out for an ally. "Say 2% of the bounty owed on the target? I believe that is more than fair, yes?" he asked both the Militiaman and the Bounty Hunter, "My ship isn't exactly going to be outrunning either of you, after all, so I'm sure you can admit I am the most trustworthy middle man here. You get the time to civilly settle your differences, everyone goes home without needing a bacta bath, and your criminal remains on lockdown."

He smiled to both of them, wheeling, dealing, and making the offer.

Well I'm cutting a deal between two parties... so I'm thinking that's Negotiation if nothing else.

Jose was worried.
The tone of the Militia, from what he could make out from the body language he could see, didn't bode well.
They were hunting someone or something and Torrence was delaying them, very effectively, but that could come unstuck.
Jose steadied himself against a balcony support post and trained his heavy blaster rifle in the direction of the Cantina.

The militia captain scowls at Apex then takes a glance at Torrance, seeming to have trouble making up his mind what to do. He takes a backwards step and swallows. "There's no need for that.." gesturing to Apex's cybernetic arm "..but I have orders to take her in for questioning." He glances at his men who seem to have their weapons trained on Apex, Nyreen and Elav'chir. "We don't want this to get out of control now do we?"

He pauses then continues, "If you shoot us then you'll never leave Nabat alive. You know that don't you? How about we just back out of here with the waitress and you just wait your turn. I'm sure there'll be something left of her when we've finished. More than enough to claim your precious bounty. Scum!" Torrance called out, and in such a way it would be impossible to tell if he was talking to the Militia, or the Bounty Hunters, "Don't harm the merchandise!" waving his arms in the air like a panicked civilian that he appeared to be, unarmed and unarmored (Unless one counts a thick jacket as armor). He seemed to be ducking and running out of the line of fire, which well, he was. Sliding in to hide behind a set of tables and chairs for a bit of paltry cover, reaching out to drag the waitress Elav'chir down out of sight with him.

"Stay down and I'll get you out," he whispered to her in a commanding tone. He hadn't made a promise to her, but Jose did, and he wasn't going to turn out someone like he was some filthy criminal terrorist.

Now if I understand this properly, using a movement action to take cover, which increases my Defense by 1 from 0. And using my other action to drag the twi'lek into cover, just in case she isn't as up on the initiative as Torrance is.

All good, with one slight problem. You rolled 2 proficiency dice but only have 1 skill rank in Ranged (light). You have two points in Brawl which covers your other attacks so that's probably where the mistake was made. That was a pretty bad roll though and should have hit so I'll let it slide in the interests of keeping things moving. I probably should also have given you an extra Boost dice since you had declared that you were aiming your weapon at the commander and threatening him in the previous post so using a maneuver now would essentially be 2 rounds of aiming giving you a greater chance of hitting.

The militia commander's body jerks backwards in a hail of blaster fire before collapsing in a smoking heap. His heavy clothing absorbing some of the blast but no where near enough. He's either dead or very close. There is a yelp of surprise and swearing from the other militia who are swinging their weapons up to fire and/or tightening trigger fingers.
Can Nyreen and Jose get their shots off first? :smallcool:

Skill dice were fine but you'll need a Difficulty die and a Boost die as well. Difficulty is due to relative range and Boost since you were aiming with your previous action. You can have another Boost die if your maneuver this turn is another Aim action. Don't redo the whole roll, just give me 1eD+1eB (or +2eB if appropriate) Auto-fire will trigger if you end up with two Advantages or alternatively 3 Advantages will give you a Critical
Looks like a good hit but see the spoilerhttp://orokos.com/roll/410041 This gives a total of 3 success and 4 advantage. So that's a total of 10+2 damage (+2 for the extra successes). You didn't say what you wanted done with the advantages so I'm assuming a critical, since you did state that you were being careful to avoid the Sullustran, probably not a situation in which you would use auto fire  Crit result - http://orokos.com/roll/410043 leaving him knocked off his feet, a secondary consideration to the smoking hole in his chest. Another one down.

OOC: Botting Weld by request. Just waiting on Knuto to declare an action and Nyreen to resolve her shot

Weld overturns a table and dives behind it, pulling out a holdout blaster

Nice roll. I'm adding a Difficulty die for Short range and a Boost die since you were aiming at him prior to this action. I'm assuming that this is with the blaster rifle you would have had in your hands. Also, any thoughts on what you want to do with that Triumph and with the Advantages? 3 Advantage = a critical. Your Triumph could also give you a critical or you could give a PC or NPC a Boost or Setback die on their next roll

Not just yet  the militia get to act first.

Militiaman 1 - moves into the cantina and fires his scattergun at Apex (who is the only standing target) http://orokos.com/roll/410050 It's a high shot but takes Apex in the chest (total damage 7 from weapon + 2 extra success = 9). Her armour deflects most of it but 4 wounds go through. This guy is a bit clumsy though and manages to get his feet tangle up in a chair (-1 setback next roll he makes)

Militiaman 2 - also moves into the cantina and fires at Apex http://orokos.com/roll/410052. It goes wide but take out part of the table that Torrance is hiding behind

Militiaman 3 - turns towards where Jose's shot came from and dives for cover, pulling out his blaster pistol as he does so.

Over to the PCs ...

Summary of the situation
Torrance and Elav'chir are behind one table that has been partly destroyed,
The the barmaid and academic are also behind overturned tables, as are Knuto, Weld and Nyreen.
There are two dead or dying militia inside the cantina
There are two militia inside the cantina with scatterguns trained on Apex, one of them is partly tangled up in a chair
Apex is still standing though bleeding a bit
The militiaman who was cuffing the Sullustran is dead or dying. The Sullustran is on the ground
One militiaman is behind cover facing off with Jose (medium distance from the cantina and medium distance from Jose)
Jose is at long range from the cantina, rifle ready

(OOC I'm a nuff nutt. Hope that makes sense?
Moving and aiming are both maneuvers, doing a second one gives you 2 strain to represent getting puffed out from the exertion (probably worth it). You also need to add a setback die to represent the cover so I've rolled that http://orokos.com/roll/410075. Total result 4 success, 1 advantage. Total damage of 13
Jose advances, rifle at the ready. dodging from cover to cover, he spots the militiaman stick his torso around the corner of his cover and squeezes off a shot. It catches the militiaman square in the chest, throwing him backwards with a huge smoking wound. He's down.

You're right re: the Triumph. Looks like Nyreen is giving you two bonuses, one from the Triumph and 1 from her extra advantages. Let's assume it's a bit of shouted advice and/or a distraction of some sort. You could take each as a Boost die or upgrade one Ability die to Proficiency.
The extra damage comes from success rolls above the first so you would do 9 damage Let me know how you want to apply those bonuses
Two threats could give you two strain or a maneuver error of some sort (like the militiaman getting tangled in the chair). Let's go with two strain, probably reasonable considering you just got hit
Apex's cybernetic arm fires again, a precise blast that hits the militiaman high in the chest, taking off most of his shoulder with it. He's down and definitely not getting back up again.

In the distance, you can hear some screams and other sounds of panicking civilians. The face of the sole remaining militiaman is registering panic but Nyreen's weapon is swinging to bear on him first.
Torrance, Knuto and Weld you can also all act before the militaman too.

Everything was just so... fast. He never knew it would be so fast. It seemed like his heart had just barely beat a few times, before blaster bolts rang out left and right, bodies were hitting the floor, and the 'battle' such as it was, was in its final phases.

"Stay down, we're almost out of it," he had told Elav'chir, as he popped his head and one arm up over the table. His blaster pistol aiming down at the last of the militiamen. He was sighting down the irons just like his brother had taught him back home, taking a deep, slow breath and releasing, squeezing the trigger with one feather light, smooth motion as his heart steadied and his lungs emptied, a burst of a blue lighted ring coming right out towards the disarmed thug.

Using an Aim Action, and shootering with my Hold Out Blaster. Using the Stun Setting for Reasons. I'll take the extra Boostery from Knuto if I can.

1 Success, 4 Advantages. Huh. From what I'm seeing this means my blaster does... 6 Strain Damage for Stun Mode, and since I triggered 4 Advantages and 4 is my Crit Rating can inflict a Critical Wound.

The arc of blue light encircles the militiaman, his body arches then collapses twitching slightly. He's down and stunned. There is a moment of silence then you all stick your heads up, the militia are accounted for. You exhale with a sigh of relief.
Suddenly your attention is drawn to a figure running away from the cantina (OOC: opposite direction from you Jose, so currently at Long range from Jose and Medium from everyone else). It's the cantina's cook.

"Poor choice in confidants," Torrance pointed out, as the cook started hoofing it out. From what he had seen, he didn't trust the man's odds of coming out of it with his hide intact. Even if he was close enough to stun, he figured the bounty hunters would have fried his butt. He glanced down at his pistol for a moment, surprised at how easy, and seemingly effective, it was. His first shots fired in a real combat situation, and not just at the test range back home.

He considered for a moment how the situation looked from the outside, and how he could spin it. There was no question that he had been seen with these bounty hunters before everything went to crap. Then again he established himself fairly well as a middle man and broker in front of any witnesses. He only took cover, shooting after one of the militia thugs had shotgun blasted at him, or at least so he could say. And stunning rather than killing, very much like the bloodless merchant should. What would the 'innocent' merchant do next? Unstable gunmen, going fully lethal at the slightest provocation...

He grabbed Elav'chir's wrist, "Come on," he instructed, dragging her along, out of the line of fire (especially if there was some reinforcement that he hadn't spotted yet) and away from the shotgun blasted table, over towards the cover of the Academic. Hopefully the rest would play along with his actions, "Come on, while they're still distracted," he tried to tell the Academic, and the Barmaid if she was close, leading them out from cover to cover, away from the battlezone of the cantina, and heading back to the Bucket of Bolts that was "his" ship with his little refugee's in tow, "We take shelter and wait for it all to blow over," he instructed the civilians.

And of course, building his cover and alibi from being implicated too much in the outright murder of several militiamen.

Not sure how you want me to handle it, maybe a little out of initiative order (Then again I rolled like a BEAST on my initiative)... But breaking away from the combat with the "Civilians". Maybe a leadership test to see if they'll follow the Perfectly Legitimate Innocent Businessman?

Torrance beckons to Elav'chir and the others. He has their attention but they seem frozen in place, unsure of whether to follow or not. The Sullustran woman also sits up as well as she can (still handcuffed) and Elav'chir points at her, "She needs protection too." She turns to look at the other PCs, "What about you lot, are you in this too? Get us out of here and I'll help you."

Meanwhile the cook is disappearing into the distance, headed towards the city.

The Sullustran rubs her wrists as Jose removes the cuffs. "Thanks for the help but I've got my own ship and I'm not leaving without it." She makes to run off in a different direction across the duracrete. In the distance you can see a G9 Rigger Light Freighter (not the same one that came in recently). Further away, a YT-1300 is lifting off (too far away for the cook to be on board, in case you're wondering)

Byen's voice comes back across the comlink, "You got it, firing up the Nexus now. So, with Thel in the brig, who's flying the Bantha? Also, don't forget I don't have much fuel on this bird. Wherever we're going it better be close."

ArcturusV

Torrance flipped on his commlink, hearing the traffic from the Captain, "Keep the engines ready to bolt, but relax and stand down," he offered, not really knowing too much about starships, but figuring that she could idle it on low power or something if need be. "Look, nothing beyond salvage is going on, and we still need to be here." He was confident in tone and stance, apparently the shootout not having rattled him like it rattled everyone else. Even the Thugs seemed to be quivering and ready to bolt.

With everyone scampering off, or dead, he straightened up, smoothed out his clothes, his weapon hidden from sight once again, imposing his order on the situation rather than looking like a wide eyed whomp rat scrambling for a bolt hole. He offered his hand down to Elav'chir, "Come on, stand tall, be confident, I am a legitimate businessman, and we still have some deals to make here," he told her, reinforcing subtly something he wished his comrades would keep in mind, not mentioning Spice Trade in every third line they uttered. Image mattered. Order mattered. So much of what he accomplished came down to attitude and confidence, always moving, always attacking, bulling over anyone that stood before him.

"Come on, we'll get you a change of clothes, clean you up, and then you watch how a professional handles things," he assured Elav'chir, and the rest of the Crew there for that matter. He walked with purpose, shoulders back, head up, looking like he was on a mission, and quite put out, considering that someone had taken a shot at him as he headed back to the Bantha, not scrambling in the slightest, everything under control.

Course he had no idea the Hunters had wired their transport, and they wouldn't be taking off regardless due to it. But he wasn't planning on running in the least. Presuming that Elva'chir followed after him, he would take her inside the Bantha, show her to the refresher to get cleaned up and calmed down, give her a spare set of clothing, a business suit like his tossed in for her. Matching as they would be, easier to show Elav'chir and him as a united front representing a larger body. Intimidation pure and simple of a classical variety, there was a reason armies, gangs, pirates, and all sorts had uniforms after all.

The last of the militiamen went down to well placed stun shot from Torrence and with a simple thought Apex deactivated her weapon and checked her wounds.

Her armor had done it's job and protected her from most of the projectiles, but a few of them had gone through, nothing serious though.

"I'm fine Nyreen, I had worse", she called out to her sister as she walked across the battlefield to pick up her helmet.

"Idiots", Apex muttered as she stepped over the smoking corpse of one of the militiamen. Had they really thought that Apex had not been serious with her warning or had they thought that they ever had a real chance.

Apex picked up her helmet and then called back her surveillance remote before deactivating it again. For a moment she thought to send it after tge cook, but there were more pressing matters and the Twi'lek was secure.

"You guys got an medic on your ship?" She asked Torrance as he seemed to be calling the shots here. "Also, we should take the sleeping one hostage to keep the militia from trying anything funny."

As you survey the situation and take stock, the Human barmaid starts to shake and becomes increasingly hysterical, "My cantina! Who's going to pay for this? Oh, my table! Broken dishes. Get out! get out!" before collapsing in a heap and sobbing inconsolably. The older Twi'lek gathers her possessions and moves to comfort the barmaid, gesturing at you all to go, not that you need much encouragement, the signs and sounds of panic are still all around and instinct tells you that it's time to hightail it.

Elav'chir nervously follows the confident Torrance to the Bantha, gladly accepting the offer to freshen up and get some clean clothes. Jose struggles in shortly afterwards carrying a couple of scatterguns and light blaster pistols (much more is going to seriously overload you) and the unconscious body of one of the militia who is starting to come around (there was only one unconscious, the others were all killed).

Checking her surveillance drones, Apex notes that the Human and Aqualish crewmen boarded a YT-1300 freighter which promptly took off (the one you spotted earlier). There were no signs of anything suspicious

Your Sullustran friend has disappeared but just when you've given her up as a lost cause a comlink request comes in across the Bantha's coms. "Didn't want to leave without saying thank you and maybe we can all salvage something from this mess. I've got a lead which that waitress we all know was helping me with. Worth a bit of money to us all. If you can help, I'll cut you in. So what do you say? Give you a few minutes to think it over. Don't take too long though, those militia have lots of friends."

Just then, Byen's voice comes across the comlink, "Ah, hate to break up the party guys but we've got in-bound from the city. Looks like a couple of A-A5 Speeder trucks with weapons mounts. They're headed our way."

OOC: I'm assuming that Knuto, Weld, Apex and Nyreen are aboard their respective ships if they wish to be. By the way, for the benefit of newer players, Weld is a medic.

"I've no idea what spice is, hell I don't know if I've eaten anything with spice on it !!"
"So from here until we aren't looking for spice, I'll follow your lead. Just tell me where to shoot."

Torrance smiled, waving over to the Rodian's little corner of the ship, "Medic's in there, good guy, level head, try not to cause him too much stress. Seems to have some special stimms he's been working on, if you're into that sort of thing," he told Apex back on the Bantha.

With Elav'chir clean and dressed up as an offworld business woman, he seemed fairly confident, even as the comm came in. He wasn't rattled in the least, a bit surprised that the local thugs had that sort of response time, probably that chef shot them off some alarm, as he doubted any of the members of the militia had time to report they were under fire before they were down, nor did he hear any of them calling out trouble, least that he could remember amid the din of shotgun blasts and blaster fire.

He arched an eyebrow to Elav'chir, "Any idea what the woman is referring to?" he asked, not sure what trouble or opportunities that the Sullustran was leveling. He remembered that she had apparently mentioned the name of their spice contact though.

But regardless, he nodded to Jose, "Answer her, set up a rendezvous somewhere for later discussions over something more... private. Give me about 5 hours before the meeting, by then we'll either be flying away from here, or everything will be settled down."

He looked over the gathered people on the Bantha, "I'm not much of a person for violence myself. Out in this lawless, anarchist hole run by gangs and guns, I'm going to be counting on you to be vigilant. Do what you feel you have to, in order to keep us safe and secure. You all seem fairly competent in such arenas, and I'll place my trust in you. If you have thoughts on the situation, let me know. But for now? Well..." he smiled, cocksure and at ease, "I do what I do, and this seems like a moment for peacemakers and dealers. Going to be heading out to the Harbormaster, he seems to have an in with the local thugs, and I'll be going on the offensive. If things work out? We should be fine. If not? Well... as far as anyone here knows I am just a potential slave trader," he eyed Elav'chir and gave a little laugh, pointing out her public tantrum about him being a slaver in the Cantina, really the only thing that he thought anyone could peg on him amid all the confusion of the firefight.

"If you think you can keep your cool, watch my back, and keep our business out of the light of day, come on with me. Take a few moments to clean up, try to put on your best professional polish, appearances matter here. I don't want you looking like some terrorist killer coming in from the blasted wastes, the idea here is Professional, corporate security at best, maybe something like a Journeyman Protector at worst. I can let you borrow a jacket or something to help the uniformed look, if you need it. But best foot forward, yes?"

He turned to Elav'chir, "You're going to be my local guide here. Stay discrete, act like you're my assistant. Whisper in my ear if I need to know something, never speak aloud in front of others, act respectful towards me. With your new clothes? Should work well..." he paused, and fishing inside his jacket, pulled out his dataslate, handing it over to Elav'chir, "Take notes as you need to, try to look busy when you can, ignore others and direct them to talk to me. You comfortable with that?"

Presuming everyone was set and ready to go, he was ready to go himself. He gave those there a confident wink, "Remember my friends, proper business is all about everyone walking away, thinking they've won."

"Byen, I need a quick scan of the surrounding 10Km area. I need a flat, yeah, yeah I know, I know. On this dustbowl everything is flat, but I need a spot without a road near it. Let's have them fly in like us."
Jose waited a moment for Byen to find a rough spot and opened Comms to the Sullustran.
"Here's the co-ordinates for the meet. Nice open place for both parties. See you in 5 hours."

"Ladies" Jose turned to Apex and Nyreen "could you please give me your thoughts on this next bit, Knuto, Weld you too please."
Jose continued" If we land the Bantha here" pointing to a spot on the holo table of the chosen rendezvous point, "Apex and Nyreen leave the vessel first, moving to the right of the ship. Ela then Torrance follow."
he paused to see if there were any problems so far before continuing,
"Always move to the right of the ship. I'll be in the belly gun ready, just in case."

"Knuto, Weld. You'll be the on-board back up if need be."
Noticing Weld become a bit restless he continued quickly "I don't expect you to come out guns blazing but you may be called upon to help"

"Byen, if the engines are cold, how long before we can get off the ground?"

"Thoughts, concerns, ideas?"
"We have 5 hours, let's use them."
