So I'm making a wizard second level. I'm wondering about interesting race/template combinations that would give practical game play help +0 La please. Also that would make fun role play. I'm considering taking either the necromancer or transmuter. From unearthed arcana

Transmuter: Changeling (+Illusionist), Mongrelfolk, Lesser Cansin, shifter, hegeyonkai (any), tibbit

Necromancer: (Venerable and Necropolitan apply to everything here) Illumian, Deep Imaskari, Spirit Hellbred (though probably better for conjurer), kenku (ravens and the dead make a good pairing), sparrow hegeyonkai (fluff into a raven or crow), ghost elf, Any with the Ghost template from Ghostwalk
(ghostwalk ghost + necropolitan afterwards?)

A great LA 0 template for a Wizard is the Necropolitan (Libris Mortis). Technically costs you a chunk of XP, but you'll catch up fast without LA holding you back. Gives you all the benefits of being Undead, helps a Wizard stay more SAD (no more Con!), and you can still heal by resting. Especially apt if you go the Necromancy route.

Base Race: Gray or Fire Elves are great for Wizards, what with their Int bonus. Plus, their only downside (Con penalty) is rendered harmless by Necropolitan. If you decide not to specialize, you can go Elven Generalist (RotW), too, so that's just free spells, basically. Coupled with Domain Wizard (UA), and you're a Specialist with no downsides, basically. If you don't want to play an Elf, Tieflings function as great Wizards, too. The odd Half-Elf Wizard is also great: take a useless race and still be the strongest you can be at your level (by nature of being a Wizard).

Other than that, you're basically looking for a race with no Int penalty and no LA. Halflings are fun for the defensive benefits (+2 AC, effectively).

I'm actually looking for more of a practical and rp race/template combo that would be fun on a wizard. I am leaning more to necromancer then transmuter

Grey Elf Necropolitan. Declare a never-ending grudge against your own race, and strive to wipe every single one of them out for murdering your human spouse and halfbreed children. That way you'd probably get along with any oddball thing the others come up with, unless it's an elf.

Necropolitan Illumian: Undeath as part of your cabal's (a gravewhisper) research into death and what lies beyond. You have joined the elite rank of the Everpresent Ancestors, and are an eternal repository of great knowledge and power. Your questing is part of the effort to discern even more of the powers that separate the land of the living from the hereafter.

(Necropolitan) Aelfborn: Half elf gone mad with power and the taint of undeath. Your wisdom will be shot though.

Ghostwalk Ghost Air Genasi: Necromantic spirit bound to the earth as a result of an experiment gone awry.

Necropolitan Gray Elf Wizard - You were so consumed with your research, you could not even allow death to stop you from achieving your goal.

You could go in to "Walker in the Wastes" You just need to cast 3 spells as divine (arcane disciple (sand), Southern magician, learn the Dessicate spell) and the heat endurance feat. You can enter the class at level 4, and it will turn you into a lich. You get the black sand spell which (arguably) let's you heal your undead.
You are a living mummy, a spellcaster plumbing the lost and dark mysteries of the ancients and bringing those dire secrets back into the world.

Alternatively: 30000ish gp buy you a scroll of hide life. Hide it in your hair and store that in a riverine locket, in an eye, gouge it out, get a wicked looking graft eye, Polymorph eye into a skull, turn skull into a flaming skull (LEoF) and rejoice in that your life force can't be destroyed

Abyssal Specialist+Focused Specialist+Chaotic Spell Recall+Some Way to Make All of Your Spells [Chaotic] (the 10th level Planar Wizard Substitution Level, perhaps?)=Fun!

Throw Spontaneous Divination in there as well, if you want to.
