View Full Version : Player Help How to turn a gelatinous cube in to a player character.

First off, we need a way to awaken it, as I don't believe it's got sentience.

Second, we need a way to assess its LA, if any.

Third, we need a way to remove the Monster HD lol. (This bit is not strictly necessary, but is much preferred to playing with Monster HD.)
I think we can use reincarnate until we are back to gelatinous cube, since it removes levels, which should include HD(?). Is there any way to reliably control what you turn in to via reincarnate?
Pathfinder's Luck Domain seems to allow one to roll twice and take the favorable result.

Why do I want this? because http://rustyandco.com/comic/level-7-89/

Dungeonscape has the Sentry Ooze template that grants an ooze an intelligence score (as well as greatly boosted Wisdom and Charisma scores).

That gets it technically playable. A -8 to intelligence still hurts.

Well, this is PF content, but Dreamscarred Press in their April Augmented (http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/179672/April-Augmented) release published a Gelatinous Cube monster race (Which unlike 3.5 races, you don't need to finish before taking class levels elsewhere). It's 3rd party content for PF, but it should be easy enough to adapt to 3.5

YES! Now if only I had money.

I found a spell called "Awaken Ooze"... in Pathfinder....and spell level 8, but still! https://the-vault-of-sighs.obsidianportal.com/wikis/awaken-ooze

It's a "pay what you want" so you can just put a 0 and you get it for free.

There's also an Awaken Ooze spell in some Dragon Magazine.

You don't need reincarnate to lose levels. Simply taking negative levels from a wight (and failing the Fortitude save at the end of the day) is enough.

You could use reincarnate to come back as a 1st-level living spell (1 RHD), then lose your RHD when you take a class level. Sadly, that'd get you some awful ability scores: 11/8/11/--/8/11. Sentry Ooze can get you some nice, if whacky, stats: 11/14/11/2/18/21. Then you can use awaken ooze (a sentry ooze is still a legal target) to get 3d6 intelligence, but that also resets the stat boosts from the template. Awakening first doesn't work, as the spell turns oozes into abberations (which kind of kills the whole 'playing and ooze' thing).

Does it have to be at minimum level? Does it have to be a legit cube? A Divine Minion Master of Many Forms 8 gets you ooze forms the whole day at level 9, while a Druid 5 / MoMF8 gets it at level 13.

Dragon #304.

I submitted Orthagonel Velodrake (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=16886796&postcount=204) to Iron ChefLIII: Zerth Cenobyte (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?325164-Iron-Chef-Optimization-Challenge-in-the-Playground-LIII) partly to make a Timecube joke but mostly because I really, really love the idea of playing a PC ooze.

Sentry Ooze gives you an Int of 2, but that's not really playable... I think it needs to be at least Int 3 to be considered to have "human-like" intelligence. However, I'm not sure if that's really a rule that's written down somewhere. I think you need to add another template on top of that with an Int modifier. Fiendish works (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/eo/20060922a), but has an LA of +2. Pseudonatural also works, but has "LA: --". I used Half-Dragon to get Int up to 4. Spell-Stitched is very tempting, but you have to switch your type to Aberration somehow (maybe Corrupted by the Abyss) and has LA +3. For Orthagonel, I just used Sentry Ooze and Half-Dragon, treated it as ECL 7 (4 HD + 3 LA), and hoped nobody would call me on it.

There are some oozes that are already intelligent:

Reason Stealer (MMII)
Conflagration Ooze (MMIII)
Summoning Ooze (MMIII)
Cesspit Ooze (Cityscape)
Assassin Jelly (WotC Article (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/re/20040916a))

There may be another way to awaken an ooze. Use a Glyph Seal or Skull Talisman to cast aspect of the wolf on the cube. This changes the type to animal. Cast awaken. When aspect of the wolf wears off, the Int and Cha will remain, and you'll have an intelligent 6 HD cube.

Negative levels actually take away RHD?

If you fail the fortitude save, yes.

You can use the Psionic Sandwich trick to get yourself the body of an G.Cube. You can also use Metamorphosis to turn yourself into an Ooze (any one works), so that you can use Astral Seed+Fusion to get one.

What you want awaits you at the Dreamscarred Press website. It's in the pay-what-you-want article entitled April Unleashed. Among such other gems as Linkin Park, the archetype (the Edge Master), is gelatinous cube as a player race. Has to take a few racial levels, but come on, you get to play an ooze as designed by one of the most trusted 3pp out there.

I made an oozy race (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jTVKiGLl_1DZrt2IyZRjBkTsHK3Cn_TWSIGrYeXAIsw/edit?pref=2&pli=1) using both the psionics and akashic subsystems by Dreamscarred Press. It's missing a bunch of the gelatinous cube abilities, but it could work rather well.

Dragon Magazine introduced and Awaken Ooze Spell, which is a way to get an intelligent ooze without a nasty INT penalty. In a campaign I'm in, one of my Ardent's minion's is an awakened gelatinous cube rogue(Yeah odd choice with -5 dex modifier, but he's oddly effective)

It does. Ghaunadan in Monsters of Faerun. But technically it's an aberration (shapechanger subtype) rather than an ooze.
