I just thought of something. I think horse jockeys are great for D&D 3.5. All you have to do is used Profession skills or Ride skills for being a horse jockey. You could make extra gold piece for it. You could even compete again other horse jockeys and make part of your adventure. So what do you think about this idea? Give me your opinions about it.

Well technically all horses/creatures of the same type move at exactly the same speed by RAW (barring feats, templates or spells/items).

Maybe to resolve a race, all competitors make opposed rolls: jockey's Ride check + Str check from mount (assuming all mounts have same base speed) to determine winner/placings?

What about using something more interesting then a plain old horse?

That's a great idea. Halfling make great jockeys. Since they're short and I believe they get a racial bonus for Ride. Also ostrich is a great idea as well.

You could use the Chase rules from Pathfinder to create a course with jumps/water obstacles etc? That way it's not a simple roll vs roll outcome

There are a bunch of regional horses in Champions of Valour. Three breeds have 70' speed and +2 con - the Raurin, Dambraii and Calimite breeds.

The Dire Ostrich mount has been around for longer than you might think (http://www.gotmedieval.com/2009/06/how-authentic-is-the-video-game-joust-video-game-week-day-1.html).

Snail mounts with monkey hegeyonkai jockeys

Oooh or gelatinous cube races! The jockey inside the cube. Would be half race half bouncy castle half wrestling match

Dromites riding spiders. Loosers get fed to the winner.

There are also chase rules in DMG2 if you'd like to stick to 3e.
