Right now one if my party members just recently asked me to help him optimize his fighter. His character is a Half orc Fighter 1/Dragon Shaman 1/Barbarian 1. His rolls are 20 strength, 18 constitution, 17 Dexterity, Wisdom 15, Int 14 and Charisma 12. He uses a greatsword as main weapon. At the moment to improve his strength we have him go on a rage while under a bull strength effect. We are planning on using enlarge person to further increase his strength and reach along with devilweed to increase his strength. The major problem with devil weed is that it makes a character act as if shaken, any way to get rid of that? Any other Ideas? Feel free to ask for more details if you need more information.

What game are we talking about here? Pathfinder or 3.5? Power Attack is mandatory for both. Take a look at the 2h Fighter archetype to add 2x the str bonus if this is PF. Also take a look at the Blood Reservoir of Physical Prowess. Standard action to use, lasts for one round, but you get +8 to a physical stat of your choice. Good for going nova (full attack or charge/pounce + hasted etc).

No clue how to optimize a 3.5 fighter anymore. Been playing Pathfinder too long and forgot all the Wizard stuff.

If I were to offer advice to the above build, I'd suggested taking only 1 more level of Fighter (or none), no more than another 2 or 3 levels of Dragon Shaman, and then just concentrate on Barbarian + PrCs.

Sources allowed? Optimization level? Well, for shaken, you can always be immune to it. Lists of stuff (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=1412.20) is a good way to find ways to accomplish such.

Depending on optimization level you could also add any number of things: Whirling Frenzy (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/classFeatureVariants.htm#rageVariantWhirlingFrenzy ) is a brutal Rage-variant for specifically beating stuff up and Pounce from Lion Totem Barbarian [Complete Champion] allows making use of that power from the start. Add to that Extra Rage [Complete Warrior] and you have a decent number of Rages per day already. That's fairly basic, but also very potent comparatively; some of the game's strongest low level options are rolled into Barbarian.

For Fighter, it's worth considering the Intimidator road (if you swapped Wis and Charisma, you'd qualify for Imperious Command [Drow of the Underdark]). You can also build up to some battlefield control options with the likes of Combat Reflexes, Improved Trip and perhaps Knock-Down (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/divine/divineAbilitiesFeats.htm#knockDown) (ensure you always do over 10 points of damage and it's very reliable) to make the area around the warrior harder to pass through. You can add the charger feats like Shock Trooper [Complete Warrior], Leap Attack [Complete Adventurer], Headlong Charge [Races of Destiny], etc. complete with perhaps Valorous weapon [Unapproachable East] if you want to do ridiculous damage. Just be careful not to go overboard; lower optimization games might have trouble handling you being able to oneshot the Tarrasque on level 10.

Well, my favorite prestige classes for Fighters are War Hulk 4 (each attack is now a 3 square an AoE) and Scarlet Corsair 5 (your cowering demoralization is now an AoE)

Have they considered being a Goliath (LA +1 race from Races of Stone) instead? Goliaths get a better rage (+6 Str, +4 Con, and grow to Large size for the rage duration). They also explicitly qualify for the Knockback feat from the same book.

Just start taking Warblade levels, you got a decent Int score for it.

Shaken is a mind-affecting fear effect, so anything that makes him immune to fear will make him immune to shaken. There are several methods to get immunity to fear, but nothing particularly immediate outside a Banner of the Storm's Eye (15000 GP, MIC). If his alignment is LG, then Paladin 3 or Soulborn 1 will give him immunity to fear. There's also a few regional feats from the Forgotten Realms Players Guide: Blooded, Bullheaded, and Fearless. Access to the Dream Domain also grants immunity to fear: Cleric 1 dip or the Planar Touchstone feat (requires 8 ranks of Knowledge: the Planes) linked to the Catalogues of Enlightenment. Some Warblade levels could get him Iron Heart Surge, which would remove the shaken condition but would also probably end the Str bonus as well.
