I know that when the comics came out that some of the forum members translated what Haley had said so the rest of us could understand her (this was when she wasnt able to talk for a while hehe). I dont know if this had made it to your books yet Giant (i'll be buying them in a month!), but are they translated in your book or is there a key that translates them?

The translation is printed with the creator commentary.

Or, you can use this handy thread...

Happy reading!

The translation is posted in the book, and there is a simple key for solving each strip. Each letter is substituted for a different one. The code does change every strip, but a lot of us are still able to decode it.

You don't really learn much from the translations. I found mine on wikipedia. There's almost nothing important said by Haley.

Indeed, most times she just said things as "What?" "I disagree." "Yes/No." I hate/love you/him"

Thanks for the reply :) (had forgotten i'd posted a question :smalleek: )

and for those that said she never really says anything relevant, the one thread that I was thinking of was where she and Elan were having dinner and I know she's going thru the different secrets that she has trying to see which one would get her voice back hehe Comic 309 when I looked back hehe

She did have a lot of interesting things to say, and one of the last things she said while at dinner was:

Yrhw, nc cgfwb dgc N uhv wdc ay yqhlcrv mkhc vdg mdgre lhrr-
Elan, it turns out I may not be exactly what you would call-

Which led to a lot of speculation that Haley isn't fully human. There are several people who think Haley is part Archon, some in jest, some quite seriously. But while scanning different threads, I came across an image of gender-bent Haley:

http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2644645#post2644645

Who looks a great deal like Girard Draketooth:

http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0276.html

So what I was thinking is:

Girard Draketooth is Ian Starshine's grandfather on his maternal side, making Haley his great-granddaughter. Now, with a name like Draketooth, the facial tattoo, and the illusionist/tracker feats, you know he's just gotta be more than "human." Probably has some copper dragon in him, which means that Haley has the same draconic blood in her veins (copper dragon based ONLY on their copper-red hair, and nothing else). This might be where Haley was going with her secrets, since neither "I love you, Elan," nor "I'm a little bit bi" were getting her anywhere with her aphasia. It also explains some of her greed, and willingness to baby her treasure as if it were an infant, needing mommy's constant care.

Anyways, that's what I've been thinking. So far no one has either cursed me for a damned fool, nor said, "By Jove! I think you've got it!" in the few times I've posted this theory.

That's a good theory. I'm still for the Aasimar, though, and I base all other evidence on the foundation of this solitary episode (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0193.html).

The fact that the angel's face is just a palette swap of Haley's is rather telling, I think. If Rich was just being lazy, he'd at least have gotten rid of the single stray lock of hair across the face.

Maybe. But stray hairlocks, while rare, do exist:

Check out the girl at the bottom of the page...

And the greenish-haired girl talking to Belkar:
http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0304.html

And the gal waiting in line at the bottom:
http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0320.html

I haven't seen many (any) Western girls with stray hair locks, but I haven't gone (and won't go) through every strip just to prove a silly point. I think there is more to Haley than meets the eye, and while you present an interesting and valid theory, I'm gonna stick with mine for now.
(Actually, I forgot one: Julia Greenhilt. She has a green stray hair lock.)

I'm sure there will be an answer before the strip ends, but for now, lets agree to disagree.

As I said, I like your theory. My purpose in pointing out the single comic that makes me prefer Aasimar was to show that my disagreement is completely based in a rather small detail that seems important to me.

And it's not the stray lock of hair, per se; it's the complete palette swap right down to the stray lock of hair. Except for the hair color, Haley and that angel are completely identical. No other PC has ever been aped like that, except for Elan--in the case of Nale, who is his twin after all--and Roy--who is bald and without any distinguishing features other than his skin color. If you count his skin color as a distinguishing feature, then he's never been aped completely either.

It just seems very significant to me, but time will tell, as you said.

Actually, helmetless Daigo is a colour swap of Roy. Also, Zztridtx (:smallwink: ) and V.

Good call on Zz'dtri, but Daigo has stubble-head, which counts as a different hairstyle from Roy which exempts him from palette swap. Besides, as I mentioned, Roy is bald and has no distinguishing features other than his skin color. Any other character who is bald will look just like him, absent a scar or facial tattoo or similar adornment. His "palette" is his distinguishing characteristic, so a palette swapped clone means less when we're talking about him.

Haley, on the other hand, has quite distinctive hair, which has only ever been duplicated in the case of that angel.

320 also gives us a case of Haley's stray lock changing sides, which makes any identification based on it all the weaker.

No, not too much time, just a series of lucky coincidences. :smallamused: I came across the Gender-bent Haley while poking around the boards, but couldn't remember who s/he looked like. Yet something kept tickling the back of my mind.

Then about a day or two later, I decided to archive the entire OotS comic onto my laptop in case I got bored on a flight. As I was going through them, I came across Girard Draketooth's image again, and suddenly remembered gender-bent Haley, and though the two looked similar.

So I compared the two, and decided that Haley was probably related to Girard somehow. Then (yeah, there's a lot of "then's" that's what happens with coincidences) I stumbled upon the "Haley is an Angel" argument, but had already figured that Haley and Girard were related, so I started thinking more about Girard's name and appearance. I started adding up what little I knew, and from Rich's habit of dropping tiny clues, and just put together my best guess.

As for the "loose hair lock links," that was yet another coincidence. I was rereading the strip when I came across THIS thread, and had just noticed the first asian girl with a loose hair lock flirting with Elan... The one who said "Room 115, cutie. Bring a friend." (OOTS 302) I guess there's something about a cute asian girl wanting to do a three-way that drew my attention!

(Whoops! Slow it down. This is a family board, and I don't wanna get banned!)

The people with too much time on their hands are the ones who sit down with the rule books, and debate the dice rolls, hit points, and character sheet details.

I heard that theory before, and I thought it was very interesting. There's just one thing that bugs me about it... if you look at strip 300 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0300.html), where you can see her again as a zombie, if you look closely at the angels/whatever they are at the left (it's hard to see online but very clear if you have the No Cure for the Paladin Blues book) there's another colour-swapped Haley-angel. So if The Giant made multiple colour-swapped Haley-angels... it just seems less likely to me that it's going to turn out Haley is related to her...

They're so similar I'll be surprised if it turns out they are not related. He even has a few stray hairs coming out like Haley does.

Uh oh... I just noticed something else as well... Girard's loose hairs look very similar to Elan/Nale's. Let's not do the whole Star Wars thing all over again.

Ian Starshine doesn't make an appearance in OtOoPCs, but he can be seen in this strip:

I really need to learn how to create a short link.
