I've been playing in a campaign where I've been healing on a character not optimized for healing. To get any sort of skill in it I had to take a dip into ardent for some really sub par healing stuff which I will truly never touch again, and I honestly didn't use it at all while it would have been relevant because the DM leveled us through rp and puzzles and divine intervention the first couple levels where it was relevant. So now I have a dead level which doesn't feel good. Is there precedent or mechanic for reassigning a level?

I believe the player's handbook 2 has rules for retraining levels and feats. You could always ask your DM to let you alter your build slightly as well.

If your DM wont allow retraining, I think you can also hug a ghoul for a negative level, and just fail the save to make it stay gone.

There are also rebuilding rules in the PHBII. Also Thought Bottle and play patty cake with a wight.
