Throughout the wait, Ashken had been thinking about their travels undrground, and especially about Mr. Floppy Nose. While do so, he remembered so really important. Elephants have big ears! Maybe Mr. Floppy Nose wasn't an talking elephant, but rather something else. The only problem was he couldn't remember if Mr. Floppy Nose had big ears, and he hadn't seen him since he had escorted Ashken and the others to Chief Sull's tent. Ashken had been sad when he realized they were going to have to leave camp with him being able to ask Mr. Floppy Nose what he was. However Ashken had shrewdly deduced that, If Chief Sull come to surface to fight, maybe he bring Mr. Floppy Nose!!! Thus when Rung had prompted the group to accept the offer, Ashken met him with an excited Yes Chief Sull! Come to fight bad-guy demons with us!

"So... We can get to the surface now? Maybe without fighting?", unlike Asken Alamryn is clearly hoping for this to be the case.

"I'm asking you to kill all the cultists and traitors who hold the way to the surface--not just the ones between you and the surface," Chief Sull rumbles. "But either way, I'm sure they won't stand aside and let you pass. Even less if they killed--or captured--your companions."

Ashken stands around. He had started to grow tired of the chit-chat, and wanted to see this promised action soon. When we go? he poses to Chief Sull, hoping that he replied with now.

"Our primary objective, in my opinion, is to clear the way to Kenabres in order to assess the situation there. The sooner we see the city, the more comfortable I'll be. I'm certain that Kenabres' commanders will see the benefit and righteousness in allying with you and your tribe, Chief Sull."

"Unless there is more information, I suggest we leave posthaste. The lives of those captured may hang in the balance as well, and too many have gone to their final rest too soon today."

Though Jedediah says this with self-confidence, he looks at the others for their reactions and opinions.

"We can't abandon those of us that are lost as long as they might yet live. If we have to, I'll carve a bloody path through their ranks. We were chosen," Kel's gesture includes their new companions, "to survive. I'm not ready to give up on any who were saved. If that means carving a path through their entire operation here, then so be it."

Rung frowns. "It seems to me that we should deal with these heathens while we have the chance. If they worship demons, then they might be a part of our problems above - the source, even. Combined with the aid that the good Chief has offered us..."

"I'm eager to get back to our loved ones on the surface, but, if we're to have any hope of defending the city, killing the cultists down here is probably worthwhile," Anevia says uncertainly.

"This is RIDICULOUS! Your wife is already dead, thief! We should be focused on getting to safety, not embroiling ourselves in these creatures' conflicts down here!" Horgus bursts out.

"There's also value in not agreeing with Lord Gwerm," Anevia deadpans.

"I...ah...perhaps we should get back to the surface as quickly as we can. We can assess what we should do next when we know what's left there." Aravashnial puts in.

Chief Sull seems disappointed, but he instructs Lann, the elf with the half-reptilian face, "Bring them to the traitors' caverns to the east. My other guards will gather the other tribes to Neathholm. Once it is confirmed that we are welcome above, we will be ready to rise and help you take back Kenabres."

Lann leads you back to the dock and poles a large raft across the underground lake, leading you through the cavern to a passage that twists and descends. After an hour's travel across rough terrain, he stops and gestures ahead of him. "The traitors' caves are right ahead of us. Good luck, upworlders."

Everyone should now have 1000 XP.

Alamryn speaks after the silence has lasted a few minutes, "I assume not, then? Shall we go?" She takes a step towards the path directed to them. Oh please, Desna. Allow me to see the stars again.

Proceeding to the east and slightly to the north, you emerge in a cavern bisected by barricades made of heaped loose rocks and wooden boards. Beyond the barricades, a wooden screen covers the lower half of a tunnel mouth. Two mutants stand on the far side of the barricade, each armed with clubs and javelins.

I would roll initiative for everyone and keep posting based on who goes first, but two character sheets are blank so I can't. Everyone please roll initiative and say where, in the N3 to T4 range, your character is.

The lingering smells of cooked meat and rank bodies hang in the air. Ten bedrolls, each piled with coarse blankets and animal furs, surround a fire pit filled with glowing coals. Tanned hides hang stretched on the walls, each crudely painted with scenes of deformed humanoids hunting giant vermin in caves. Two mutants who apparently just woke up and hastily picked up their gear ready javelins.

All four of you can act before either of them act, and before any of the NPCs with you act. The map (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1DlZpE5XhmBPYGTrs0bnRsU2tHWJamH36KZXMjf4Ccpo/edit?usp=sharing) is updated. You get 300 XP each for the just-finished fight.

As he looks back the way they came, he is mildly surprised to see no enemies the way they came. Kel flashes Horgus an exasperated look, as though he were telling a child 'No!' from across a crowded room. Kel then spies the summoned badger, and Aravashnial's uncertainty.

Aravashnial says. The first badger moves to attack the woman with the glaive, and the new arrival does as well, but the woman with the scythe strikes at it as it moves past her, then steps out of the room. The scythe attack misses, and each badger hits the woman with one claw; she now looks as badly injured as she did before she cast the most recent spell on herself.

Kel motions to the bow in his left hand. "Does using this make me a warrior? Does cutting someone down make me a warrior? Cause it doesn't!" Kel lowers his right hand and places it over his own heart. "Being a warrior means finding something; a cause, a person, a ideal, and being willing to sacrifice for it. To put yourself in harms way in defense of it: just like Terendelev did for all of us. Do you think so little of her choice to save you, to save us?"

"You've only cared about yourself the whole time down here and now you're losing even that? Here." Kel thrusts his own scale into Horgus's arms. "I want you to keep this scale close to you. I want you to focus on the monumental sacrifice she made for Kenabres. And I want you to prove yourself worthy of such a loss. We lived, she died. Make that mean something!"

Kel nods to Tellos and prepares himself for what might be on the other side of the door.

Hanging over the edge of the shaft is a knotted rope, the top end tied to an iron spike driven into the ground.

Before you can decide what to do about this, Horgus catches his breath and expostulates, "You know nothing about me or what I have done for the crusade, fool! None of you do--though some make more assumptions than others!" he glares primarily at Aravashnial at this point. "And considering I don't even have a weapon, this is a truly ridiculous piece of grandstanding!"

"Lord Gwerm speaks the truth," Aravashnial says quickly. "We should not blame him for--"

"ENOUGH, conspiracy theorist! None of your words now can erase your accusing me of funding the cultists! Let's just get back to the surface, as soon as you're all done wandering around and mapping every inch of the lovely underground, and then we never have to see each other again!"

If you want, I can loan you mine - there is no reason that someone should have to use a weapon they are unfamiliar with, not if they don't have to." He draws it and offers Horgus the hilt. Before Alamryn or Horgus can respond, Tellos opens a door and a lizard the size of a pony hisses at him. For the battle with the cultists: 240 XP each. The cultist who didn't flee is wearing a masterwork (or magic; anything that's visibly masterwork could potentially be magic) chain shirt and has a masterwork scythe, two flasks of liquid, two scrolls, an ordinary dagger, 10 gold pieces, a spell component pouch, and an unholy symbol of Deskari, Demon Lord of the Locust Swarm and primary sponsor of the Worldwound forces.

"More likely a watchdog," Anevia says. "I sympathize with your not wanting to kill animals if we can avoid it, Tellos, but look at those teeth; the way it hissed, it would have had your arm off in a minute if it had had the chance. So...which way now? Gwerm is right that the ladder is more likely to lead to the way up, but it might be worthwhile to check what's behind the south door--plus anything she passes on the way is likely to be on high alert if we come through right after her. "Tellos, get back!"

Kel swiftly steps forward and raises his bow, trying to find an opening to strike out at the mutant fighting Tellos. Long seconds tick by and Kel holds his shot for fear of hitting Tellos. With a harsh cry, he searches for a new target in the other room, loosing the arrow past the pair fighting in the doorway.

Tellos and Alamryn both miss the figure at the door, who bellows incoherently in a deep male voice. Kel shoots the one who seems to be giving orders; the arrow sinks into her but she doesn't fall, instead returning fire. Anevia grabs her own bow and shoots at the mutant at the door twice, hitting the second time. The mutant tries to hit Tellos again; the other mutant turns and runs over to the door to take a swing at Tellos as well. Horgus, still muttering, reaches the floor, draws Rung's rapier, and moves up to the door; you catch the words "disgusting creatures" from him.

A cry of pain escapes Kel's lips as he's struck heavily for the first time since falling from the surface. The arrow tore through his armor before glancing off a rib and falling to the ground. "You won't live to strike me again!" He sends another arrow tearing through the air towards the tall figure, before maneuvering closer to a recess in the wall. He leans against it heavily, a pained expression on his face, eyes almost closing.

"Aravashnial! Can you conjure a creature for us down here? Direct it to attack the three in the room after ours!"

Kel's arrow fells the mutant who shot him. Aravashnial finishes a spell he had already started and a spider the size of a large dog appears on the floor next to Alamryn. "Attack the three in the next room at the time I say this! Do you need another?" Aravashnial shouts from above, starting to cast again without waiting for an answer. The spider hurries forward to attempt to bite the guard in the doorway.

I'm guessing that Alamryn's arrow will go at G1 instead.

Alamryn's arrow strikes the mutant guard, and the spider bites him, but Tellos' sword fails to penetrate his target's defenses. Anevia fires at the spider-bitten guard twice, hitting both times. A man with small horns, who looks significantly less mutated than all the mutants you've seen down here so far, runs out of the room to the north and comes toward you; you recognize him as a tiefling. One of the guards steps forward to press the assault on Tellos, while the guard who was bitten by the spider attempts to squash it, but misses. Horgus stabs at the nearest guard with Rung's rapier and misses.

You come back to yourselves slowly. The stale air lets you know that you're underground; the freakish scaled humanoid glaring at you out of three azure eyes makes you wonder if you're still unconscious and dreaming, but your body feels entirely too uncomfortable to be asleep. You realize that your armor has been removed, your equipment is nowhere to be seen, and you've been tied up.

"Conscious, eh? Oh, good," a female voice from behind you says. A human woman dressed in a chain shirt steps into your line of sight. She smirks at you and asks, "Should I bother to ask you to answer questions first, or can we get right to the torture?"

While you're considering your response to this, you hear yelling from somewhere off behind you and to the left. "What? Now?" The woman sighs. "Uziel, go deal with that!" she snaps. A figure you hadn't seen, a male tiefling, runs past her. "Don't worry, I'll be back to torture you momentarily," she tells you. She moves out of your sight and casts a spell, then another spell, as a battle apparently rages in the room next door.

"Attack the tiefling!" Aravashnial repeats. The wolf tries to savage the tiefling, as does the surviving spider, but both miss. The tiefling takes a step west and tries to stab the wolf but misses; a woman in a chain shirt, holding a masterwork glaive and prominently displaying an unholy symbol of Baphomet, comes through the door behind him and looks around briefly, her eyes settling on Alamryn. She pulls out a wand and waves it; a glowing red glaive appears next to Alamryn and slashes at her ferociously. Anevia fires two arrows at the new arrival, one of which strikes her in her side. The surviving guard runs forward to try to club Anevia, but Anevia ducks out of the way easily. Muttering in irritation, Horgus steps forward to try to stab the guard, but also fails.

Your efforts to free yourselves from your bonds prove ineffective, for the moment. The apparent battle continues in the next room. You see a stone chamber, with a stone pedestal holding a copper brazier aloft in the center. Against the western wall, an enormous pile of animal furs and thick quilts serves as a bed. Sheathed weapons and stone carvings adorn the walls. You three seem to have been left alone in the room for the moment; the door to the south through which your captors exited stands open, but you can see little through it, except a stone floor.
Kel's arrow strikes the tiefling, who looks wounded but remains defiant. The wolf and spider both continue to attack the tiefling; the spider bites him and he flinches, but the wolf misses. The tiefling stabs the wolf and steps further into the room. The red glaive sails after Alamryn and slashes at her again. Hosilla steps forward into the room, ignoring the wolf, spider, and Horgus's attacks on her, none of which penetrate her defenses, and she slashes Anevia brutally with her physical glaive, snarling, "Lie down and die, cripple." Though badly wounded, Anevia limps backward away from her; Horgus, muttering, steps into Hosilla's way and stabs her. She glares at him.

Outside the room, the woman who threatened to torture you is facing off with another woman armed with a quarterstaff. Alamryn has doesn't even have time to breath a sigh of relief when the tiefling finally falls when she has to jump away to dodge the spectral glaive. But this leaves her vulnerable to the physical glaive that the woman swings at her. The world suddenly turns upside down and Alamryn has a few seconds to stare at the roof before the darkness claims her. I wanted to see the stars again...

Kel's eyes widen as Alamryn hits the floor, hard. Rage fills his mind as his gaze falls upon the figure responsible for all of his companion's pain. There was no time to drag the fallen Alamryn to safety like he had with Tellos. Aravashnial's panicked gasps were audible as their shared language cut through the cacophony of the battle.

"Try to make your way down the ladder! Alamryn and Tellos are both unable to fight and I cannot make my way up to you!"

Kel's eyes meet Hosilla's and a sneer breaks across his face. "There's more coming, but please, let me be the one to remove your filth from the mortal plane. I'd much prefer my arrows be the ones lodged in your breast."

Reaching back, Kel takes two shafts between his fingers and nocks one while clenching the other between his teeth. With blinding speed, he looses one at Hosilla and grabs the other, second the second projectile after the first.

The sounds of movement slowly brings Jemus to realize something is wrong. The woman is speaking and someone runs past but it doesn't register. Some one else is speaking and he slowly looks as he can make out two bodies struggling as they roll around.
Huh... are they tied up? Sure looks like it. I can help out with that...> he thinks to himself as he struggles to stand, only to realize he is bound, too.
"Hey, what in the nine hells is going on around here?" having complete missed the conversation between Semult and Trawyn. Slowly, their predicament becomes a realization as he struggles to free himself.

Trawyn's bonds part and his arms are free. Jemus' bonds hold fast.
One of Kel's arrows strikes and wounds the woman severely. The wolf and spider try to bite her as well, but fail. Her spectral glaive turns to swipe at Kel. She steps away from the wolf and spider, toward Kel and Horgus, and pulls out a flask; before she can drink it, her inattention gives Horgus a chance to stab her in the chest and she falls, dropping the flask; the spectral glaive disappears, closely followed by the spider. Anevia moves forward, grabs the flask, and tips its contents down Alamryn's throat.

Everyone gets 400 XP each, including the new arrivals; they didn't really participate in the fight, but 1) they probably would have had it not ended exactly when it did and 2) more importantly, it wasn't my intention to bring them in at less XP than the already-present. Sorry about Anevia healing Alamryn and not you, Tellos; exact hit point totals below zero are a little more abstracted than she knows about, but "actively bleeding to death" isn't, so she went for the non-stabilized person.

Trawyn Fellwine

The moment his bindings frayed and snapped, Trawyn became a whirlwind of action. Pulling the blade from the wall he cut through Semult's bindings in a flash then bent over to cut through the ropes around his ankles.

Turning to the newly awakened figure that shared in their predicament, he hissed, "Hold on a moment, I'll get you free as quickly as possible."

Once Semult is freed, Trawyn kneels over the other man to cut him free, "My name's Trawyn, and that's Semult....I don't suppose you know what happened do you? One second the city was under attack, then the ground opened, and I woke up here."

No sooner were the three untied when the sounds of pitched battle from the adjacent room abruptly end...

"Rung may be missing or hurt. Aravashnial doesn't seem to think he's up by the top of the ladder anymore. Horgus, I need you to check up the ladder to see what may have happened there. You and I are the best two to check the rooms connecting here for any imminent threats." Kel nods to him and Anevia. "You both fought well, but we're in poor shape. We need to get everyone back on their feet, at the very least. That was quick thinking with that potion, Anevia. Can you search the bodies to see if there's any other healing to be had?"

Kel intends to search the next room should Horgus not put up too strong if a fight. He'll keep his bow up and sneak along.

Alamryn comes to her senses, coughing a little after having liquid poured down her throat. She jerks up and looks around. "I'm alive. You're all alive", she states the obvious, then pulls herself up. The gashes left by the glaives still hurt, and she has to clench her teeth to hold down a whimper. She's still a bit spaced out, trying to focus on what Kel is saying. Rung missing. Tellos still down. Search the enemies for potions. She moved towards Hosilla who had almost killed her, and began searching her body.

Semult quickly finds his spell component pouch in the chest, mixed in with the rest of his, Jemus', and Trawyn's equipment.

Horgus scowls and says, loudly enough to be heard by all of you, "Fine, I'll go check on the conspiracy theorist." He climbs back up the rope.

Alamryn finds, on Hosilla's body, five more flasks, but it's hard to tell if any of them are healing potion; two of the five are unmistakably alchemist's fire and would be a bad idea to drink. She also finds the wand Hosilla used to summon a spectral glaive, the (masterwork or magic) glaive Hosilla nearly killed her with, a chain shirt, 32 gold pieces, a jeweled book of prayers to Baphomet, a key, and a http://i67.tinypic.com/23h24hf.png.

Anevia turns to search the other bodies. "We should probably head back to our friends' island and rest for the night when we're done here, whether we find another healing potion or not," she says, "but first, I heard voices from the next room."

The room from while Hosilla emerged is a long, natural cavern lit by three copper bowls of glowing coals that hang from the ceiling. In the center of the chamber stands a block of stone that serves as a table, lined with wooden chairs. An enormous bloodstain, maybe a week old, darkens the stone's surface. At the north end of the cavern is an open door, behind which you see what looks like a bedroom, with Jemus, Semult, and Trawyn in it.

Drezen was a city-fortress founded within the Worldwound during the First Mendevian Crusade. It was conquered in 4638 AR, and has been held by the demons ever since.
Drezen was betrayed from within by the dwarven paladin Staunton Vhane. It is ruled by a marilith named Zuhra Aponavicius, one of the more feared demonic generals.
Areelu Vorlesh is the name of a wizard you've heard referred to as "the architect of the Worldwound."Over two hundred years old, she is an enigmatic figure. She regularly consults with the generals of the Worldwound, but she doesn't appear on the front lines of battles very often, considering her might. Some call her the Champion of Deskari. She is rumored to be both brilliant and utterly insane. No one that you know of has penetrated the Worldwound deeply enough to find where she resides. Encounters with her have always ended in death for crusaders.
Yaniel was a hero of the Fourth Crusade, a human paladin who worshiped Iomedae. She was assassinated by the sadistic lilutu demon Minagho, and her sword reportedly lost its power. After her death, the crusaders put her sword on display in the Grey Garrison.
Kandro Nyserian is a minor nobleman of Kenabres and a merchant.
Topaz Solutions is a shop that sells alchemical supplies.
Two decades ago, a historian and researcher named Niuna Estrod came to Kenabres to write a history of the crusades. Estrod constructed a tower of pale gray stone to hold the volumes of history he wrote, as well as other tomes and scrolls acquired from traders and returning crusaders.

Ever since Estrod’s death from food poisoning 2 years ago, researchers and wizards have occupied the Tower of Estrod for short periods of time, using it as a temporary library or laboratory after city officials declared possession of tower. These temporary residents pay a small fee to the city of Kenabres in order to make use of the space.

The demonic invasion of the Prime Material Plane is sponsored by two demon lords, Deskari and Baphomet. Deskari, the insectoid Lord of the Locust Host, is the senior partner in the arrangement. Baphomet, the Lord of Minotaurs, may be the weakest of all the demon lords in sheer power, though he's known for being surprisingly devious.

Semult finally comes out over to where the battle was and the bodies lay. He was an academic, an athletic one, knowledgeable and trained but not experienced with real fights to the death. He took in the sights of the dead woman and ... tiefling? He took to one knee for a better look at the tiefling while Trawyn studied the potions. "If you didn't figure out that one potion, let me try. Oh, I found these dragon scales back there too. This one casts Enlarge and the other Gust of Wind. I'd like the Wind one. Here's the Enlarge one." Semult takes the potion if given and studies it. "Were all the bodies searched?"

"More scales? I also have one." She takes out the scale. "It will allow the one who carries it to levitate for a while. I think, maybe Anevia should carry it? In case we come across difficult terrain she can't cross?"

Each of the guards has a club and two javelins. The mutant with the bow has two more potions flasks, a wand, a masterwork or magic chain shirt, a masterwork or magic longbow, 38 arrows, an obsidian unholy symbol of Baphomet, and 33 gold pieces. The tiefling has a rapier, a light crossbow, 20 bolts, and a suit of medium studded leather armor.

Now that he's awake, Tellos feels drawn to the pile of furs that appears to serve as a bed in the room Hosilla came from.

Semult was pretty disappointed with himself not having found the lockbox. All those years of pranks in school, as pranker and prankee, failed him when everything suddenly became a life or death matter. He chided himself, hoping his spellcasting wouldn't show the same results. "No, no key yet. Check the woman for it? I'll recheck the furs." He takes the furs one by one and shakes them off on the side, so that anything falling out would bounce on the stone floor.

Accepting the latest potions from Trawyn, he asks for his observations on the potions. The wizard compares these to the other potions, then continues on with the potion identifying procedure he had studied much in school.

"We already searched her once, but I can check again." Alamryn kneels next to Hosilla's body and begins searching. "Oh, I think you should know, that there was this other woman earlier, that got away. Climbed up a ladder one floor up from here. "She had a key," Anevia says, handing the key from Hosilla to Tellos.

The two potion flasks from Wenduag radiate faint conjuration, as does one of the potions from Hosilla; the potion Trawyn identified as invisibility indeed radiates illusion, and the liquid Trawyn identified as not a potion indeed doesn't radiate magic. Hosilla's wand radiates evocation, and Wenduag's radiates transmutation. The lockbox radiates a powerful aura of evocation. None of the rest of the gear radiates magic.

I'm not sure about the third. Tellos should take the stronger one and we can save the other for emergencies? My aunt kept telling me to buy a blessed bandage but I never got around to it."

Please take one now, though, we've no idea what lurks around the next corner." Looking around at the assembled group, "If no one objects, perhaps I should hold onto whichever one we don't use immediately. I'm likely to be of less use to you in direct combat, and can boost its healing effects with my music, thus I could potentially revive someone if they fall while we're fighting our way to the surface."

Trawyn has 6 uses of Bardic Music per day, and Healing Hymn counts as one use. It adds his ranks in Perform(+5) to the healing effects. It lasts as long as he plays/sings +5 rounds.

Semult takes the Transmutation Wand and studies it, hoping for some inscribed clue of what it was.

"You said there was a fight up above? We should check up there. See if we can find anything useful. Did the woman that escaped seem to be in charge or was she part of this one's group?" He points to the dead woman on the ground.

But we're all hurt or low on magic or both, and we don't know what awaits us on the surface even if there's no more fighting down here, which there probably will be. We can press on if you insist, but I think we should go back to Chief Sull's people and recuperate."

"We were lucky to survive their hospitality the first time, thief!" Horgus bursts out. "Now you want to go back to them? This is insanity!"

Watching the banter back and forth between the group, the bard comes to the conclusion that chastising Horgus only seems to encourage his recalcitrance and sense of entitlement...so he would not go there. There were, however, some questions that needed resolved before the group pushed forward.

"We're in a fight for our lives, and to not utilize the greatest weapon at our disposal is the height of folly. I know not who is possessed of the greatest skill with such a weapon, but by god somebody will wield it. If they don't, I'll use it myself simply out of the desire to survive."

Tellos prefers a two-hander, Jemus prefers to dual-wield, and Alamryn prefers to use a quarterstaff - all of these preferences are perfectly understandable. Trawyn is proficient with a longsword. In my humble opinion, if you were in a fight for your very survival I believe preferences would be secondary to figuring out who is the most proficient with such a weapon, but maybe that's just me.

Turning to Anevia, "It's been mentioned that you're searching for your 'allies' or 'companions', and you say they were carrying scales such as these?" Motioning to the dragon scale he's carrying and the one in Semult's possession, "This one is capable of making a person grow to twice their normal size, and that one can summon the winds....were the ones your companions held, thus?"

"I'm reassured to hear we've allies behind us, and a place to withdraw to relative safety. For better or worse, I'm in this with you. Our cause is the same, and as such I'll accompany you forward," nodding to the door near Tellos, "or back. Be it known, that I can only assist what healing you may individually have, as I've expended the only curative spell I have for today."

Moving over the pile of equipment and gear looted from the fallen, Trawyn will help disperse them to all of the party members as needed.

The two long stone slab tables are covered with skinning tools and piles of freshly butchered meat. After the others claim items from the loot, Trawyn will shrug out of his leather armor and don the artfully crafted chainshirt, picks up the wand, potions, and crossbow bolts that were unclaimed. Nodding appreciatively as Alamryn takes up the storied sword, he loads his crossbow and readies it.

I realized I'm not sure which scale Rung was carrying. There is: a Levitate scale, an Align Weapon scale, a Gust of Wind scale, an Enlarge Person scale, a Resist Elements scale, and an Alter Self scale. My guess is that it's the Resist Elements scale, which will cast resist elements three times per day, but only to resist cold or electricity. Like all the others, it will only work if the person carrying it doesn't have another scale.
