Gold Dwarf Ability Modifiers

Am I reading this entry correctly? The gold dwarf, located in the player characters? section of the DMG, as I see it, has +4 Con -2 Dex -2 Cha

No, the ability modifiers in the DMG replace the ability modifiers of the Shield Dwarf. The gold dwarf has, in total, +2 Con, -2 Dex.

+2 Con, -2 Dex, +0 Cha. Those modifiers replace the regular dwarf's, not add to them.

It doesn't say that it replaces it in the description. In other sub race descriptions it says it does if it does.

On the plus one racial bonus on attack rolls against aberrations it lists below the +2 Con -2 Dex in the description of the Gold Dwarf, it specifically says that it replaces the attack bonus against orcs in goblinoids.

It doesn't say that it replaces it in the description. In other sub race descriptions it says it does if it does.

The DMG acutally says:

"Gold dwarves have all the dwarf racial traits
described on page 14 of the Player’s Handbook,
with the following exceptions."

That means you replace whatever bonuses you get with the following description. But yea, you could also interpret that the way you did, but the RAI is pretty clear.

If you want a +4 constitution race, take a look at Mongrelfolk. They're +4 Con, -2 Int, -4 Cha.

Dragonborn dusklings/dwarves/gnomes/desert half-orcs/water halflings/body hellbred/neanderthal/krinth/nezumi/water orcs/warforged/some kinds of goblin all have +4 constitution too.

Why leave out that dragonborn mongrelfolk have +6? :smalltongue:
