Hello, I've been using Giant in the Playground for a long time for finding information on character builds, and how to synergize character builds. Now I'm trying to create a legacy weapon for use in the campaign my character will be joining into, the DM is fairly open, and has accepted legacy weapons in the past, but I really need help making one as I have never before. I need help designing one that my DM would be accepting of, and have a decent/good background of, and decent/good rituals, and I dont know where to start. This weapon would be in the process of becoming a legacy weapon.

Any help will be appreciated.

Basic info of character:

Human
Swordsage 1/Barbarian 5
+1 Large Adamantine Greataxe

Character concept? Character role? Any ideas as to the weapon itself?

If your DM is doing the weapon-has-drawbacks thing (which i'd recommend he'd not... they hamstring the characters a lot) take the one that only drops your attack by 2

Concept - smart barbarian who like to write books o-O

Role - Semi-tanky frontliner, who fights to get inspiration for writing tales.

Weapon Ideas:

Counter Charge: 5/day
Deflection: Item grants a +1 deflection bonus to AC.
Cause Fear: 5/day
Claw of the Tiger (tiger fang): Cannot be disarmed from you.
Speed Enhancement +10: +10 enchantment to speed.
Cure Moderate Wounds: 3/day.

If your DM is doing the weapon-has-drawbacks thing (which i'd recommend he'd not... they hamstring the characters a lot) take the one that only drops your attack by 2

He is not.

EDIT:

The idea that I currently have towards where this weapon came from/how I start down the legacy path is that when training in the mountains with my master he was murdered by order of the king of Borum, for being a threat, and my barbarian took the greataxe that belonged to his master and started marching through Kilengor slaughtering Borum troops (lawful evil) and surviving fighting a calvary party single handedly, though there is no explanation of gold costs.

Base Stats: Ornate (+500gp, +2 Intimidate) Adamantine Greataxe

Omen: The axe is riddled with writing, from the knotty mask on the blade to the scrolling script down the darkwood haft, telling of the legacy of the weapon and the great deeds done with it. The names and stories on it are different every time you look at it, though you never see the letters change. Every now and then the story there is yours. As a standard action, examining the writing on the axe gives you a +1 circumstance bonus to one knowledge check.

5: +1 Adamantine Greataxe
6: Wounds Would Not Stop Him: Add Crusader's Strike to Maneuvers Known OR Gain use of Crusader's Strike 5/day
7: - (maybe add a template here... a +4 to its hardness?)
8: Martial Discipline (your pick) +1 Adamantine Greataxe

I like this idea a lot actually, especially the omen.

Isn't setting sun more unarmed strike based?
Instead of boosting it more +'s get special abilities on it...

fast movement that late is... So-so you probably would have it from foot-slot items.

I'd say you build it to 11 for now. And when you're getting close to 11 build its lesser and greater legacies

I'd consider having the weapon give you more devoted spirit or white raven abilities (which work with the weapon concept), or boosts to your Rage...

With it being an intelligent item it'd be good to think of its personality and motivation; idea, a livewood haft, a spirit lives inside of it.

Ehhhhhh, perhaps? The idea behind the Setting Sun for the Greataxe was that the Setting Sun has a lot of counter maneuvers that would make sense IMHO for the weapon such as: Counter Charge, Scorpion Parry, Fool's Strike etc.

My DM will want to know the full extent of the legacy prior to use in the campaign sadly.

Hows this?

Don't forget empty levels need to come before the ability that uses them up.

My DM will want to know the full extent of the legacy prior to use in the campaign sadly. fair enough, though if you're founding the legacy the abilities should reflect the journey of your hero to some extent, be an expansion/reflection on his deeds.
Unless he's unlocking the prior, hidden, legacy of the weapon

What's your barbs mo on the battlefield?
My Barbie's MO on the battlefield is:

1 - Protect my allies
2 - Protect myself
3 - Stop the most threatening looking thing

My Barbie's MO on the battlefield is:

1 - Protect my allies
2 - Protect myself
3 - Stop the most threatening looking thing

kay so emphasis should be put in protecting you and drawing the heat away from your allies. The Iron Guard Glare stance might be beneficial to you

I reworked the thing to be a bit more... martial in bent; ditched stone dragon because while fun, you can easily get that via a feat. I limited the enhancement bonus to +1; Greater Magic Weapon can see to that being boosted further.
You can move the abilities around. I hope this works for you, or you can tweak it around.

5: +1 Axe
6: Crusader's Strike 5/day
7-8: Setting Sun Affinity
9: +4 Bullrush, Overrun, Trip
10: +5 Bonus Intimidate OR Called

11: Intelligent Legacy (Major)
12-13: +1 Defending Berserker Setting-Sun Axe
14: Protection from Arrows
15-16: Bloodlust (WoL pg 104)

17-18: +1 Wrathful-Healing Defending Berserker Setting-Sun Axe
OR 17: +6 to str 18: +1 Valorous Defending...
19: Savage Transformation (WoL, 175)
20: Wish

Can this be done with legacy weapons? I thought all enchants added up had to be equal or less than the +modifier, also

5: +1 Axe
-Legit
7-8: Setting Sun Affinity
-Legit
12-13: +1 Defending Berserker Setting-Sun Axe
-Weapon is a +2 so would only get a +1, defending and berserker are both +1~
17-18: +1 Wrathful-Healing Defending Berserker Setting-Sun Axe
-Other than previous point, legit.

Yeah it is legal as far as I can recall. It just needs a +1 to be enchanted

I think this is what I'm going to end up going with~
Any ideas as to rituals?

EDIT: Thank you for your help with designing the actual weapon, I REALLY like the overall feel of this axe, it feels, amazing actually.

The 12-13 ability gets you an extra +1 ability (hence why I added defending there)

But isnt the +1 Setting-Sun Greataxe considered a +2? as per book:

Weapon Enhancement (Su): The effective
enhancement bonus of a weapon increases, as shown
in the table below. This ability can be placed only on
a weapon, and can be selected multiple times.
Instead of increasing the enhancement bonus, you
can choose any combination of enhancement bonuses
and special abilities whose total market price is equivalent
to the effective bonus increase. For example, if
the effective enhancement bonus increases by 2, you
could increase the weapon’s enhancement bonus by
1 and give it the flaming ability, or leave its enhancement
bonus unchanged and give it a special ability
whose market price is equivalent to a +2 bonus, such
as holy.
Effective Enhancement Bonus
Current Increase
+1 or less 2
+2, +3, or +4 1

oops yeah i had a snafu there when playing around with the slots...
nevermind me.
and don't forget you can still tack on enhancements by paying the normal bonus... fixed price ones would be nice

I'd see about buying defending for it sometime; it is a v solid way to boost your AC which fits thematically

The Lesser Legacy: go visit the tombs of your master's masters and recite the odes of their deeds into the dark barrows; this awakens the intelligence in the blade...

Greater Legacy: Defeat some legendary monster...

I thank you again. I proposed the weapon to my DM, and he was very enthused by it, and is helping me write a story up for its origin. :3
