View Full Version : Can you help me pick a (co-op multiplayer) game?

I have some Steam credit as a result of a recent birthday, and I'd like to spend it on a game my partner and I can enjoy playing together. Luckily, we have some common tastes in video games: we both like sandboxy type things that aren't necessarily all about combat. We just have some interesting disagreements on the subject of intricacy that make me wary.

See, I love complex rulesets that I can make do unusual things; see Dwarf Fortress, Aurora, CK2, Space Engineers, Minecraft, et cetera. My partner, on the other hand, has an especial dislike for "micromanagey" games, which they define vaguely and idiosyncratically as "anything with time-limited decision-making or where there's just one way to do a thing or you die." We're currently playing Stellaris together, which seems to satisfy both their yen to jump in to things with both feet and my spreadsheet addiction, but Stellaris doesn't really do the kind of co-op I want. I'd like something more directly cooperative, more "let's build a house together" than "let's apply vaguely Keynesian economic principles to optimally extract resources from these star systems, which you will see as a series of mineral shipments from the friendly socialist catfolk to the galactic north of you."

So, Playgrounders, what survivaly/city-buildery/crafty games are out there that are forgiving of minimally informed play while also being nice and complicated?
