Docta, you are the DOCTA! Awesome!

I just need to remember this thread whenever anyone asks for Haley translations. I'm sure there will be a few more that will need to be added to your OP.

And well done, by the way.

Edit: And I suspect the request thread was locked because the request was answered.

I think that #250, that was listed as "Random four letter word" is yeah, judging by the context, Haley's expression, and the fact that noe of them are the same letter.

The strip in question is here: http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/GiantITP/ootscript?SK=250

Docta_Dillon
2006-05-30, 10:47 PM
that was suggested, along with several other not-so-forum-friendly words, most of which have no repeated letters, in the original "What Haley Said" thread. Personally, I dont think that there is enough evidence to say it is one word over another, so whatever random four letter word you would like it to be, it is.

Wow, thank you so much! There were only four little comics that I couldn't figure out on my own without a possible headache, but it was enough to bother me.

I'm sure that this is a minor detail, but the second to last word in #247 is actually "Darn". And you accidentally misspelled "freakin'". Sorry, I'm a typo-jerk. Please feel free to attack all of my errors.

Don't you hate all of those little mistakes in the crytograms, such as where the letter 's' actually stands for itself, and where two different letters stand for the same thing in the common language... It was really annoying when I did my own deciphering.

I think what he meant was that, in some of the ciphers, when you figure out the key (i.e. a=x, b=q, c=m, etc.) the cipher-letters spell out a phrase; on one occasion I think it was a variation on "the quick brown fox..."

Except that, ya know, she knew perfectly well he couldn't understand her.

It's like the way she was perfectly willing to tell him in the restaurant, but balked at the idea of doing anything that would actually convey the information to him.

Did anyone else get "hte" = "aun" instead of "and"?Yes. It seems to happen a lot with these translations where a couple of errors are introduced. "and" should have been "heg" if it was consistent.

I think he does it just to simulate a DM's almost constant failure to recheck his own ciphers in most D&D games...or he's just trying to aggrivate folks...or he's not simulating anything and just forgetting to recheck his own ciphers.

I like to think its the second option.

I'm pretty sure in this case it's the third option.

It looks like the Giant meant to repeat the 'nd' from 'hundred', which he'd just finished encrypting, and shifted it by one accidently, getting 'un' instead. Thus 'aun' instead of 'and'.

I am somewhat Inclined to agree, I hate proofreading, and I am one of the most anal retentive perfectionists in the world. i can't imagine that an artist rushing to get a free comic up late at night for thousands of rabid fans is going to be doing back translation.

*prediction/spoiler?*

I think Haley is going to get her speech back soon in the battle thats ahead. Aside from the fact this has gone on long enough and her self loathing is following her around I think things are going to get messy for the OOTS real soon and that might snap her our of it.

Hello. I want to get this thread to the first page. And I think it's ordered by the date of the most recent post on that thread. So this should get it up there. Just wnat to say, it's pretty useful. Some of these I can't translate on my own.

How did you translate this? Just guessing or...?

TinSoldier
2006-10-18, 01:48 PM
How did you translate this? Just guessing or...?I'm not very good at translating these myself, but I think I've done one or two.

You basically use pattern recognition and letter frequency. Each comic is a different substitution so the process starts anew for every episode.

Example: In the latest comic, one of the words that Haley says is "H'x". The only two-letter contraction that I can think of in English is "I'm" so we know the values for I and m. Also look for three letter words that might match "the" and capitalized words for names, etc.

See the What Haley Said... (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=comics;action=display;num=1132355002 ) thread for more information. This thread is basically a compilation (in the first post) of all of her cipher-speak.

Am I right if I think the cypher changes every episode?

Docta_Dillon
2006-10-18, 08:26 PM
yeah, the cipher changes pretty much every time Haley speaks. Most of the exact ciphers are posted in the "What Haley Said" thread that was linked to before.

Wow, 140 comics. I hadn't realized it's been so long...that's approximately how long it's been since I've enjoyed any of Haley's scenes, Har.

Sorry folks, it had to be said. Really bang up job though. This makes the annoyance slightly lesser.

I prefer to think she said "Nale???" in #386, but we'll probably never know. :)

DougWykstra
2006-12-07, 01:13 AM
I agree. It should be "NALE???" Just because that continues the joke of everybody in the strip shouting Nale's name at least once.

Really- look at the pattern(I'd like to point out that there are no dialogue interruptions between any of these lines):
Sabine- NALE!!!
Elan- NALE!!!
Thog- NALE!!!
Haley- XCGH???

Hmmm... I wonder what that last one translates into?

The Vanishing Hitchhiker
2006-12-07, 01:16 AM
I think "NALE???" is most likely. Although she could be saying what, or Elan, or even Thog...

Well, if you're going down that path, you might as well just make it "Smart Hero", eh?
Indeed.
Watch out for over-simplification. The talent system is nifty, but it doesn't have the heroic, epic feel of true D&D. I suppose the clear way of simplifying would be to just have the four basic classes be Cleric, Rogue, Fighter, and Prepared/Spontaneous Caster, and make everything else a prestige class, but that's boring.

-Although, tearing down the whole class system altogether and creating a new, skill-based system could be interesting... wrong for DnD, but interesting...

Seriously though, I would love to see a translated version of those strips. Maybe Rich could include them in the Director's Cut. ;)

Oh, I envision it...
A making of book where you see Haley speaking her lines in Common, and then a complicated process is done so that it appears as cryptograms. hehe...

How about that lock'n'stickify?

Just because you are lawful doesn't mean you obey the law of the land, merely that you believe in tradition and honor. Think a mob boss or something to that effect.

Haley's loss of words was actually a really long comic time... it was cool, too, because it really helped her character.

Many of the more defining "Haley Moments" have been shown, not spoken.
