Hello Guys :D

new member here, I am surprised this username is still available :DI'm not really :smalltongue: You're just lucky that nobody else wanted a username that was a type of makeup.

Also, Blasphemy! Love your username. I can just see you running to every thread where we yell BLASPHEMY!

Anyway yes. Friendly Banter and Silly Message Board Games. *cheesy grin, thumbs up*

The numbers have aligned. The stars are in place! The penguins have stopped sliding! Finally, my time has come! All shall see my bellybutton, and tremble! Muahahahahahahhh!!!

Uhm. Hello.

I'll be hanging around here a while. If you need anything, I'll probably be by the bar, harassing the bartender. Oh, and I'll be carrying a bag of holding full of Special Edition Newbie-hugs with sprinkles, for anyone who wants one.

But no cookies, please, I'm on a diet.

Welcome Thengel (father of Theoden, I presume? :smallwink:)! Don't worry about your English - as long as you try and work to do it well, no one will hold it against you. In fact, there are a LOT of people in the Playground whose native language isn't English, so I think you'll fit right in.

Greetings Gents, my name is not really fred I just couldn't think of a cool D&D class (I didn't want DantheDruid or DantheDuelist and DantheDragonDisciple wouldn't fit and neither would DantheDwarvenDefender).
In reality I am nothing like the fighter, I am not tough or strong, really I am more like a Wizard, Studious, Obedient, Intelligent.
Perhaps my Username should have been WilltheWizard.
I am from Britain and like playing D&D, Video Games (PC/PS2/DS/GBA) and Reading fantasy/sci-fi books like those by R.A Salvatore or William King or Robert N.Charrette (Writer of the Secrets of Power Trilogy, which is based on the world of Shadowrun).
Just wanted to say hi and welcome to any people who post after me.

Well, Salina (and any other new folks), ask and ye shall receive! Here's a short list of a few important places you might want to check out!

The Rules (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/announcement.php?a=1) - Read them. The mods are all pretty easy-going, but try not to break these.
Want information on how to do fancy stuff like this (and more)? Try HERE (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/misc.php?do=bbcode) for formatting tips. (But don't go overboard! See The Rules for info about excessive formatting.)
Want an OotS-style avatar to call your own? Check out the Avatar Adoption Center (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26936) to adopt an already-made one, or request a personalized avatar made to your specifications in the Request an OotS-Style Avatar (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33589) thread. Or, if you're feeling brave, go to the Arts & Crafts (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=27) subforum, find a guide, and try to make your own!
Got a simple rules question about your favorite RPG? Ask it HERE (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=87867) (or if it's about D&D 4th Edition, try the Special 4E Edition thread HERE (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=83321)).
Interested in making your own stuff for your favorite gaming system? Check out the Homebrew (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=15) forum to see what others are working on, and even submit your own stuff for critique. And if you're interested, there's always at least one or two design contests (usually by The Vorpal Tribble or a couple others) going on that you can check out.
Want to chat about OotS (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=22), Erfworld (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=47), or something (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=11) else (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=17) comic-related? Those are the places to go!
If you've got any questions or concerns about the site, feel free to contact any of the mods (Roland St. Jude, Rawhide, etc.), or post in the Board/Site Issues (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=25) subforum.
Finally, if you're wondering about the little titles under peoples' names, stop and read THIS (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45659) instead.

Hope those were helpful, and welcome to the Playground! If you've got any other questions, feel free to PM me or any of the other older folks that post here and one of us'll try to help you (or find you someone who can). Oh, one last thing - beware of hidden white text...

Like this! Bwahahahaha!

Hey there, GITP. What's happening? I'm used to just having one single welcome thread just for me, so I'm not gonna put loads of effort into this in case I just get ignored.

I'm English, my name is Jordan, I'm a student and a writer. I'm also a gamer who would kick your ass if you ever faced me on CoD: World At War. Just a warning. Don't worry, I'm not chained to my sofa, I do get out and have lots of friends. I also enjoy listening to progressive rock/metal, such as 30 Seconds to Mars, Buckethead, Opeth, Serj Tankian and many more.

So, that's me. Do what you will, baby! :thog:
(If you can't guess, Thog is my favourite character on OOTS, with :elan: a close second).

Welcome new people!
Just make sure that you follow the forum rules and you have joined during one of our (in)famous theme weeks. This week is baby week(don't ask).
A few helpful tips are:
1) Highlight any posts that you find. There is a pretty good chance that someone wrote something else in White Text i.e. White text
2) While not a requirement, it is generally recommended for new people to get custom avatars. This will help you stand out from the crowd. For example, look at my avvie.
3)Be nice
4)Stay away from the SMBG forums(Silly Message Board Games) unless you want your soul stolen and sold several times.

and the most important rule is this:

Absolutely NEVER feed the Llama.

Now go and have fun.

PairO'Dice Lost
2008-12-04, 12:10 AM
Greetings, all. PairO'Dice Lost here, and I'm glad to finally be joining your august company after lurking since comic #1 went up. I've been frequenting other forums mostly (like the WotC and Enworld ones), but now that both have died off a bit after the edition wars changeover I figured I'd finally drop in and join you.

As my name and sig might imply, I'm a fairly humorous kind of guy and you'll probably be groaning at my posts before long (but don't worry, I always feel repuntent about it afterwards :smallwink:). I've played every edition since 1e, starting a bit late in '98, though I've mostly DMed since '02-ish. Let's see, what else...rabid homebrewer, diehard Star Wars fan, Lego engineer, computer geek extraordinaire...yeah, I think that covers the high points. Oh, and of course loquacious grammar Nazi, as you've probably figured out thanks to this overly-verbose introduction.

Once again, hello and salutations. See you around!

Hello, I'm new here.

I am a reader of the OotS since two or three years (I don't remember ^^'), and some months ago I decided to read the forum too.

I'm from Italy (so forgive me if my English is not very good), and I study classical licteratures (and languages) at the university. My hobbies are reading (from fantasy to ancient mistical books, from classical poems to Italian comics), playing computer (guess who are my favorite video game's characters) and roleplaying games (especially Italian ones, and I am a fan of Dragonlance), and sometimes I don't dislike cooking, or a nice walking.

Tempest Fennac
2008-12-05, 03:46 AM
Your English isn't too bad ("and sometimes I don't dislike cooking, or a nice walking." would read better as "I sometimes like gcooking or going for nice walks", though). Your avatar looks neat as well. Did you draw it yourself?

FeAnPi
2008-12-05, 04:20 AM
Thanks for the hint (sometimes is hard to stop thinking in one language to properly use other ones).

And yes, I draw my avatar; with paint (I'm not very good with other graphic programs), but I did it myself.

Hello, playground inhabitants! I basically go to whatever forum the wind blows me to, and it just so happened that this was the one. I've been lurking for a couple weeks and finally decided "Hey, why not?" Plus, I think I'd like to join an online D&D Game.

And Order of the Stick is "teh awa3sum!111". Or, in English, the Order of the Stick is definitely the best webcomic I've read in my entire life. GO ELAN/HALEY! And may Belkar's status as Sexy Shoeless God of War be questioned by no one!

And, about me: I consider myself a writer, I love music, I'm learning to play guitar (slowly but surely), I'm a D&D freak as of about a year ago and I'm going to be hated by the general populace for loving 4e. :smalltongue:

I'm a little bad at this sort of thing, but it's about time I did one, what with making the account... what, two to three months ago and not posting once? I've been reading the comic for a few years now and one day got an urge to look at the forums, lurked for a bit, made an account then lurked a bit more. It was all a downward spiral from there up until the time I made this post.

But what more can I really say? I'm terrible at introductions, I may have said that before, so I apologise for that.

Nope, unfortunately not - they don't really mean anything, though, so don't worry too much. For more information (like why the first rule of Playground ranks is that we don't talk about Playground ranks :smallwink:), check out THIS (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45659).

I thought I might say hello in this thread. I've been a Playgrounder for a while now, but only in the Order of the Stick section. One day I realized that this section existed, and after lurking a little, I was pleasantly surprised to find a community aspect where everyone knows each other in a way very similar to the Homestar Runner Wiki forum I used to frequent. I've already made a few posts around this board, and thought I'd stop in to formally introduce myself.

Eh, I've been around for a while, but I just found this topic and thought it might be fun to officially say hi.

Sup, everyone. Some of you may know me, somehow, some of you may think I'm a lunatic. Which I'm not, as it would mean I'm some sort of tiny fur encased limbless rabbitlike creature that moves by hopping erratically. And I wouldn't have opposable thumbs, do you know how terrible that would be?

But yeah. Cutting myself off here.

Since this is the place to post to introduce myself, I might as well!
I am Mr. LL (Solarblade/Solar13lade in different places, but here, Mr. LL) and I decided to join this forum because I like Order of the Stick (who doesn't? rethorical question) and this place looks cool. I know next to nothing about D&D or any tabletop game and whatnot since I never really got a chance to play any, but I would like to learn, but I digress.
I make freeware games (I use Game Maker, to make video game games, not board/tabletop games) and like to create ideas. I always wanted to create a game that would be enjoyed by many, and a tabletop/board/video game is what I aim for (one of those anyhow, not all of them. That would be silly).

Enough rambling from me though, hi all, and I plan on posting. I think I will anyhow. Otherwise I'll lurk and read, hopefully. >.>

But that's me. Nice to meet you all. etc. etc.

Hi guys,
I'm a long-time OOTS reader, first time OOTS forum reader/poster...
A bit about myself- I'm most accurately described as an ambigously gendered half-elf ranger/druid with a bit of a thing for unicorns, and had so many res's cast on me I lost count. I like playing D&D though don't get much of a chance any more, I read Discworld novels and recently set up a rp forum based around it, and soon I hope to be writing a novel set in Faerun. And of course, my favourite OOTS character is V, if only because all my mates believe I was the inspiration- the FOOLS!

Just greeting all those I don't know (which just so happens to be everyone :smallwink:).

I found the order of the stick thru a link in an online game's forum two days ago. I read the entire strip and I like it... Especially the continuing referances to 'gaming'.

I have a small question.

When filling my profile, I chose a custom avatar; but I never saw the step to actually draw it. MUST I choose an avatar on the list?:smalleek:

How do I go back to choose an avatar or draw my own?

Kool. The system has deemed me a pixie. That goes perfect with the avatar I want to put in. It is a character from the afore-mentioned online game.

Got to your user control page ('User CP' link), Edit Options, and then enter in the URL for the custom avatar you've drawn or acquired and uploaded to a site such as photobucket.

The "Custom Avatar URL" bracket is right below the list of Oots avatars.

Hiya, Dee! Theres actually already a thread for introductions, here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=49101). You sound like a pretty cool guy, though - what kind of writing do you do? Have you been published? What part of NYC do you live in?

TheDeeMan
2008-12-14, 10:05 PM
Sorry, I went right by it. LOL!

I write's 'em all: Scifi, mystery, adventure, comedy. But my first love is detective/pulp fiction like Hammett, Chandler, Spillane, Jim Thompson, etc, used to write. Give me a smoky barroom, in a back alley, filled with murders, gangsters, gold diggers and men to be dug, and I'm a happy book. LOL!

I self published a trade of my webcomic "GAAK" back in '04 and I think that's where my future lives in the comic biz: writing and publishing my own creations ads opposed to writing Spiderman, X-Men, etc. That just doesn't seem very satisfying to me: Working on someone elses creations when I can be creating my own. It's a hard hustle, but worth it.

What do you do?

Dee

TheDeeMan

Heh... well, I write too, but as yet unpublished. Sounds like you're in a pretty neat field though; I'll make sure to check out your webcomic if my internet can handle it (it's cribbling along like an elderly tortoise right now), though.

You'll like it here, though. Theres a bunch of writers lurking around  Am I right, men? And ladies?

TheDeeMan

What types of stuff do you write?

Have you tried self publishing? After I came to the sad realization that comic publishers (Marvel, DC, etc) weren't interested in publishing comics other then their own the POD/self pblishing boom was a god send. I use Lulu myself because i'm a graphic novelist and Lulu is better for that and trades. But there are other good ones around.

Honestly? Nowadays self publishing is just a mouse click away. LOL!

And if you do check out GAAK I'd love to know what you think of it. :)

Dee

Felixaar
2008-12-14, 11:00 PM
Fiction, both Novels and Short stories. Not typically in any one gender but usually in Fantasy/Sci-Fi/Romance/Comedy/Action/Adventure kind of area.

Self publishing is tempting but I kind of worry it might always fall through on me - though theres many reputable companies, I just feel like I have a better chance of success via a traditional publishing house. How well do your trades sell, if it's not to personal of me to ask?

*poke*

Don't self-publish if you can help it. :smalltongue: While there is nothing wrong with it, you're much less likely to be able to make a living unless you devote a LOT of time to marketing yourself. :smallwink:

(Is it too early to show him the 'shipping thread?)

Felixaar
2008-12-15, 01:26 AM
It's never too early to show someone the shipping thread.

It's always too early to show anyone the shipping thread.

You're right though, Doc - and as much as I would love to do marketting of myself, it's time that could be better spent writing. I don't want to end up like Holly Lisle, who seems to spend so much of her time working on her website and writing courses and so little of it actually writing...

Btw, Dee, I checked out GAAK - as of so far, I love it! Haven't read very far though so I will get back to you later with more formed opinions, but it is very entertaining, both the art and dialogue are v. impressive.

TheDeeMan
2008-12-15, 02:54 AM
That's true about the marketing, but you're gonna have to do that anyway sooner or later.

A guy I know from Lulu named Jeremy Robinson got an agent and a publishing deal when his Lulu published book took off on Amazon and Barnes&Nobles. Google him.

Speaking of which, I have a meeting with an agent today about her reping us to the major book publishers. So cross your fingers for us.

About our sales? We sell enough right now to have some extra change in our pockets. Enough thatwhen the royalty check comes every 3 months we can buy something nice with it. But we only have online retailer distribution through Amazon, Barnes&Nobles, etc, right now and you can't say enough about being able to browse as a main selling point in a bookstore. And you really can't flip through the pages of a book online. Plus GAAK is a trade now, a graphic novel soon, and comic folks really aren't looking to buy comics online. When they want one, they still head for the local comic shop or newsstand. But still, we do okay.

And never underestimate the value of marketing/advertising. The more we do, the better we sell. The mre folks we get to come and read GAAK the more books we sell. So eventually you'll have to do the marketing thing too. It's not brain surgery though. And now with things like Project Wonderful it isn't even expensive.

And thanks about GAAK. I thnk you'll like it. :) I look forward to hearing what you think once you've finished it

Not bad at all, actually. She's going to start shopping GAAK to the editors of book publishers starting in january once they've returned from the holidays. She mentioned Random House is specific. I'm guessing because their Villard label has published graphic novels. But the point is to get the editors at publishing houses interested in GAAK.

So now my OCD is racing like it's in the Indy 500. LOL!

TheDeeMan
2008-12-16, 12:34 AM
I think a lot of folks have a "if I build it, they will come" mentality. Your job has just started one you've created your book.

I say, start saving for advertising now. Get yourself a website for your book(s) to help promote it. The website is easy. Ads take money. Even Project Wonderful ads. But its worth it. The moment we put up GAAK book ads on PW our sales went up.

You can't just get in the game, you have to play the game too.

I am a games designer (http://www.airsteampunk.com)! Well, games writer at least. :D Woohoo! :P (Got to remind myself I can actually say that every now and then)

Figured I should finally get an actual account on here. I'll try not to get dragged into arguments about alignments and stuff :P

Welcome, Decc! I see you're a fellow seventeen year old male - with you at our side, seventeen year old males shall soon come to conquer the playground! AHAHAHAHAHA! That is, atleast, until I tick over to 18 on July 1st and led a rebellion of the eighteen year old males.

At any rate, welcome to the playground.

Thanks for the welcome; I've only got 33 days left of being 17 though, so we'll have to make the best of it while we can.

Anyway, a little bit of intro now that I've already introduced myself: my normal handle is DancingTofu. I'm pretty involved in rhythm game communities and run tournaments for DDR, Guitar Hero, and Rock Band; I've run 5 tournaments this year and a total of 8 tournaments in all. I decided to keep with D.T., but wanted something more relevant for this site, so I decided to be a 12-sided bean curd. Unfortunately, DodecahedralTofu is 16 characters, so I had to be a 10-sided bean curd instead. Oh well; decahedrons are pretty cool anyway!

Since I couldn't include them all in my profile, my academic interests are musical composition, music theory, statistics, geometry, physics, creative writing, drafting, world religions, philosophy, theory of thought and knowledge, neurology, and mechanical engineering. I'm a National Merit Commended Scholar, with a PSAT score of 2030 (730 math, 690 reading, 610 writing). I took my SAT my Junior year and got a 2170 (730 math, 700 reading, 740 writing), and I'm hoping to transfer to Reed College next year. I'm currently in a co-enrollment program that's allowing me to complete my Senior year of high school at a local community college.

I'm an avid bicyclist as well. I bike 10 miles to school each day and the same 10 miles back. I own two bicycles, both of which need repairs, neither of which I can afford to repair right now. I pride myself on my endurance; I participate in local Relay for Life events each summer, and I try to walk/run a total of at least 20 miles each time. My current best is 29.5 miles over a 24-hour period (I took breaks). Back to bikes, it should be noted that I live in Portland, Oregon, the most bike-friendly major metropolitan area in the United States. As a bicyclist, I'm particularly proud of the Hawthorne Bridge, one of the only bridges in the country that has a designated bike path, signs to advise both bicyclists and motorists, pedestrian paths that include walk signs for the part of the bridge that raises, and a fantastic waterfront on either side. I love the place I live.

Above gaming, academics, and bicycling, there's one thing that's most important in my life: music. I've been exposed to music theory for 11 years, I started playing Piano 7 years ago, and I composed my first original song 5 years ago. I began playing around with home recordings three years ago, which is how I got into MIDI. I'm taking an Electronic Music class right now that's helped expand my knowledge a lot and it's allowed me to produce my music at a quality I used to only dream about. My musical influences include Rhapsody of Fire, Tempest, Nightwish, REM, Rush, Kyle Ward, and a plethora of video game soundtracks. The style I play primarily is Electronic Folk Metal. I've written lyrics for about 40 of my songs, but I took a break from lyrics for a long time. I just started up again and I admit I'm a little rusty, although it's largely because I don't have much to write about, so my lyrics are often taken from other peoples' perspectives.

Anyway, that's pretty much me in a nutshell. Go ahead and just call me "Tofu"; it's what I'm most likely to respond to. :]

Hey guys,

I've finally taken the plunge again, been a long while since i got hooked on a forum, and i've kinda missed it.

I've been reading the strip for a long time, love it, so this seemed a good place to sign up.

I've been roleplaying for over half my life, currently in two groups, and I run some extra games on the side as well. I've also just started running my new campaign world...

I've been writing some freelance stuff recently, but it's early day's yet... but one day, like most roleplayers, i'd love to break into the industry somehow.

Outside of gaming, I live in the UK, just outside of London. I love fantasy and science fiction books, including Dragonlance, Azimov and so on.

I'm a big geek, who has run his own web design company, reads comic books (big Marvel fan), and listens to heavy metal music. (Though I also listen to blues, light rock, dance, folk, japaneese opera music and so on too!).

I am also a big fan of fantasy artwork (my pride is my signed Elmore), and love artsy people too, as long as there not too full of themselves...

Well, intro's done, i'll have a nose around...

Hopefully you'll hear more from me...

I am 17-year-old student and I come from Poland. I love RPG :) I play mainly DnD, Warhammer, World of Darkness (Hunter and Changeling) and Neuroshima. As there are very few willing players in my area, I am DMing, or as I prefer to call it - storytelling most times.

I found "Giant..." about three years ago, but I have to admit, that the second comic, Erfworld fascinates me a lot more :)

Hey all! First post!

I was very excited when my friend introduced me to OotS-it just seemed so, I don't know, AWESOME. I started reading with "On the Origin of PCs" and realized it wasn't making any sense. So I switched to the webcomic. I started yesterday and am already on page 340-I just can't get enough.

So anyway, as my first post, I have a really, really newbish question to ask-how do I post an avatar on my user? I just can't figure it out.

Thanks all, and I can't wait to start getting to know my way here!

Go to the user CP (control panel) in the top left of the forum. Go to options on the lefthand side. At the bottom there will be a choice between a set of generic OOTS style avatars or a custom avatar.

To get a custom avatar it must be uploaded at a photosharing site like flickr or something. You can request one in the stickied thread in arts and crafts or choose one in the avatar adoption center thread.

Welcome to Gitp everyone. Glad to have you here.

@Sneak: Did you know that you gave me cookies when I first arrived and posted in this thread?

Huh. That's actually a good idea. Way to go, me! :smalltongue:

Hello to all! They call me... Ivan Ooze! I've been a reader of both OoTS and Erfworld for a while now, but I've only just made an account now for various reasons, the foremost of which being that I just got into D&D after playing WH40k and Inquisitor for some time.

Greetings! I'm a two-headed dragon of sorts, really; my wife and I are looking for a good 3.5ish Play by Post, since our Ravenloft one is going far too slowly. We're in Ohio, my wife is a far better writer than me, but we both love a good story.
