Would this skill check ever come up in a game? Since profession is Wis-based, what would a politician check look like? Is there a difference between a Cha-based politician and a Wis based one?

Look up the Kingdoms and War section of the PRD for the rules for political games. "Profession: Politician" is not used. Instead, look at the list of general rulership roles to find what skill is related to that political activity. Mostly, that´ll be Knowledge: Nobility.

My experience with professions is that they serve two purposes in games. Downtime money gathering (make a profession check for the week of downtime and derive a salary from the result...i suppose for a politician that's graft money) and to get circumstantial bonuses by petitioning the dm when you think your profession synchs up with the other skill role you are making.

I wish they had been as thorough with craft and profession skills as they were with knowledgea when they made the game.

It's tempting to allow a player to use their Profession (Politician) in place of certain uses of Bluff and Sleight of Hand. :smallamused:

BBEG is a role not a skill

In our long time campaign. One player is a king, who has enacted quite the central administration which consists of quite the amount of politicians, layers/barristers, economists etc. He has ministries which take care of day to day affairs and have embassies defense commands and the like… SO we use it for interactions, discussions and bargaining. And just for the general “this is a skill they should have” as a concept character NPC. That said, we have pretty much write-ups on all ministers and diplomats. Any who would significant interactions in some way. So more often than not, he actually plays his NPCs instead of his own character a level 30 paladin. So we use it often. However we play D&D 3.5!
