Other than a nightmare? This is an 18 HD DK, so it can have a 9 HD Mount. Any good ones other than a Nightmare?

I'm giving him Dread Wight Gargoyles as followers, and the Nightmare, Cauchemar is too many HD...

Any ideas could help. It's just a fighter 18 DK duel wielding Dwarven Waraxes (full TWF/oversized/focus, spec, crits with leap attack for S**ts n Giggles.)

Even an appropriate template for a Nightmare?

The template makes no mention of restrictions to what templates the mount can have, as long as it's only 9 hit dice. This seems exploitable.

Maybe throw the infernal template on a dire wolf?

If he uses flying minions, a flying mount could be useful.

How about going full Nazghul and mounting your guy on a wyvern?

Surprisingly enough, there are rules for what qualifies as a mount (in the back of the DMG). The creature must be both willing and able to carry the rider - and an atropal scion, while possibly willing, is not able to serve as a mount due to its size and physiology.

Oh I just looked up Elder Worg. Your Death knight could have some worgs under his thumb and he rides the pack leader. And 9HD to boot.

How is Giant an "unsuitable mount"?
Tell it to Bran Stark! :smalltongue:

Also, it's somehow restrict mount's CR. :smallconfused:
Come on!!!
How it's even works?!

Also, OP don't specified size category of the DK (for all we know, it may be a Kobold)
But even if the DK is bigger than Small, Shrink Collar is dirty cheap at 18th level

How about a Greater Barghest? The Feed ability seems like a decent way to impede would-be heroes from making a second assault on your DK.

Another possible to consider is Fiend Folio's Kuldurath. Notable abilities include immunity to electricity and mind affecting, and it gains the riders DR, resistances, and personal spells.
