I need some help with trivial stuff....

When using spells, for example fireball, it says 1d6 damage per level. Does it mean that it means 1d6 damage per spellcaster level, or for the spell slot it is used for?
Or scorching ray, for example, it says an additional ray at levels 7, 11. Does it mean a spellcaster level or spell slot used?

In 3.x, this is per caster level. The only time this would be spell slot level is if you're playing 5th edition.
