So FTB has recently been screwing right the hell up for me. What are other good modpacks/launchers to use?

I just import everything into MultiMC and manage packs through there. Probably not the best idea if you just shop around for packs other people have already made since it's not like, integrated browsing or anything, but eh.

Otherwise, I hear AtLauncher (https://www.atlauncher.com/) gets used a bit.

How does MultiMC work?

MultiMC is amazing (https://multimc.org/)! It's very simple minecraft launcher.

It basically makes it easier to have multiple instances of minecraft, as well as to manage mods and texture packs on any particular instance.

What I like best about it is that it allows you to disable mods without renaming or deleting them from the mod folds (by editing the instance and going to mods you can uncheck mods and they will be disabled, it makes troubleshooting mods disagreeing with each other very easy). It also makes dealing with forge easier if you use forge because it can download any available version of forge (and will tell you which ones are stable)

I don't use modpacks, but I do have a pretty huge pile of mods that I make use of.

I'll give it a try. Thanks people!

So I've got it downloaded, and it just ain't working. I'm trying to do something as simple as install NEI and it just crashes every time.

Can you outline what you're doing when you install?

Assuming you're using MultiMC, should be:

"Add a new instance" (file button with a star on it in the upper-left corner of the window), give it a name, select which version of Minecraft you're using.
Select the new instance, then click on "Edit Instance" on the right. On the window that comes up, click the Install Forge button on the right. Pick what version of Forge you want to install.
Go to "Loader Mods" on the left of the "Edit Instance" window. Hit the "View Folder" button in the lower right. Drag the NEI jar you need to install into that folder. Make sure you downloaded the right version of NEI for the right Minecraft Version on which you're playing.
Close out of windows, select your instance, hit Play.

:smallsigh: Oh. Not sure if this is the case for your situation, specifically, but depending on your computer environment, you may need to right-click your MultiMC.exe, go to Properties, and hit the "Unblock" button. May also help to run it as an Administrator, since it needs to download and install files in order to launch Minecraft and whatnot.

There is also an "Other Logs" section on the "Edit Instance" window, if Minecraft logged the error preventing it from launching properly, that's gonna help a lot.

If you need to post a crash log please use a spoiler tag for it because those things are usually long and there's only like 5 lines that are ever important but you always need to pick out those exact 5 lines.

Okay, posting my crash log, since I do not know what I'm doing wrong.

D'oh. NEI is a ChickenBones mod, so it also needs the CodeChickenCore mod in order to boot up properly. I believe you're looking for CodeChickenCore-1.7.10-1.0.7.47-universal.jar.

It works! It works!

Thanks!

Edit: Well, NEI works.

I'm adding mods one at a time (to see when issues start) and adding Big Reactors and COFH Core has caused NEI to not work.

The other option is to download a mod pack via a launcher, and import the instance from your launcher folder to your MMC folder.

There's an interesting pack on the ATLauncher called ShneekeyCraft. Has a nice ring to it, can't imagine why :smallsigh:

Seriously, though. If you want to start the wonderful world of making your own packs, start by downloading and taking apart someone else's. You can start with mine because mine is a lite pack, so there's fewer things to go wrong. As the size of the pack increases, the amount of work it takes to maintain it goes up exponentially.

In other news, ShneekeyCraft for MC 1.9.4 should be out by the end of July at the latest.

If you want a list of what I use (it's not a mod pack) I can share it too, though I haven't booted up minecraft in a while so I'd need to comb through it first to make sure nothing is broken. It's a 1.7.x batch of mods though....I should check and see if more of them have managed to update to 1.8...

Though I don't use NEI, it's a little too bloated for my likes, and last time I tried to use it it would break certain commands. I use crafting guide + a separate installation of WAILA.

First of all, make sure all your mods are for the same version of Minecraft. Second, try updating to the latest version of forge. Sometimes that breaks things.

Amusingly, the very popular Regrowth mod pack has Millenaire in it. Though it's an end game mod.

Here's the list of things I use in minecraft 1.7.10 I've had to tinker with the config files for some of these to get them to work in a way that I liked. Some of them I think have been discontinued (carpenters blocks last I heard would require a complete rewrite to go to 1.8 and as such is maintained but no longer updating)

Surprisingly not very many were nagging me to update them when I started minecraft up, so I'm going to give you the links and their version numbers. If you opt to install the most up to date version for minecraft 1.7.10 they should all still get along ok, having dug up the websites it looks like more of them have 1.8 versions available now too.

Witchery (https://sites.google.com/site/witcherymod/) adds some witchy stuff, if you want to interact with villages I recommend you turn goblins off as they kill villagers, but also count as villagers so killing goblins in a village will lower you village reputation.

I used to use binnies mods (expands Forestry), but haven't been able to get any of binnies mods to run for a while.

I also used to have enviromine, but got kind of tired of it, especially the constant sweating. It's still rather neat though if you want to poke at it, and should work fine with the mods in the big list up there.

Hopefully that's helpful...and I linked everything to the correct page. It's always very time consuming hunting all those things down, especially when modders pass their mod on to a new person.

That's because Milinare doesn't play well with others. It never takes into consideration what other mods might do that villagers might like. Other mod's worldgen can REALLY screw up village behavior. It is also a resource hog, and can bring a server to its knees as the AI used to move villagers around and do things is always calling something or another.

My next mod pack is going to be rather streamlined. Even moreso than usual, I mean. Thaumcraft and Blood Magic will carry the magical side of things. Storage Network and Refined Storage as a quasi-AE system with Storage Drawers and *sigh* probably Iron Chests (at least until Enhanced Inventories comes out, but that's got a CoFH dependency, so when that'll come out is anyone's guess). For tech, there's going to be Immersive Engineering. Not sure what else yet. Then there's going to be Harvestcraft and (once it updates) hunger overhaul and Agricraft for changing the food game. With Cooking for Blockheads to make it interesting and not automated.

I'm explicitly NOT including either Psi or Intangible.

Oh yeah? I didn't know that, I haven't really gotten into botania yet, the guy has done a few things with it, but then he got distracted coding a custom botania flower spawning algorithm.

Good to know though.

If JNA doesn't want to use botania chickenshed is still there for him though.

Try none.

People have been building some very amazing command block creations over the years. You can run around as Thor throwing a returning hammer and shooting lighting bolts or use rocket packs or throw an item to pull all the resource blocks near it up to the surface for easy mining. And since they are command blocks you can typically edit the script running the mods, like I think the resource pull checks for a diamond, redstone block, and something else, it's easily rebalanced to five diamonds by changing a 1 to a 5.

Some of the command block creations add entire class or magic systems or new creature as well so they can go extremely in depth. I think the largest one I've seen added something like 12 new buildings to Minecraft's structure spawning. Just search for "Minecraft one command" or such on Youtube and here's a link to a command dedicated website (https://minecraftcommand.science/commands).

The downside is the "mods" will only remain active if the chunk the commands are in is also active. But you can use a Bukkit mod for that and run it server sided. No mods have to be downloaded by anyone wanting to play and if one of the commands doesn't work you can "uninstall" it from the entire live server world by breaking a sign or at the very least the blocks them selves.

Its worth it to get a better world going, more interesting than the two short planks that inhabit anything else village related.

There's some optimization that could stand to happen with the AI code to not bring a server to its knees if left unchecked. I do get your point, something better needs to be done with villages. Witchery does something interesting with them, however that involves Witchery, which is only relevant if you enjoy griefing and/or PvP.

At one point, I was trying to put together a village mod, but ended up failing horribly.

Whelp, ShneekeyCraft for 1.10.2 is now a stable alpha currently undergoing testing. Still waiting for a couple of mods (Immersive Engineering and Thaumcraft 5) before I'll be releasing it as fully developed, but it seems to be doing not so bad so far.

As an update, ShneekeyCraft should be releasing by the end of the month. To tide you over, here's a teaser video I hacked together real quick:

A Finely Crafted Link (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTN2V_UdpW4)

Showing off the combination of BoP, Climate Control, and Realistic Terrain Generation (RTG), plus what happens when you toss in a decent texture pack and shaders.

I just really like trains. And with that ORE mod, and Railcraft I can have trains coming from specific quarries, Factory Style.

You still can, you still have loading/unloading tracks and minecart automation with powered rails. Actual trains are about the worst thing that ever happened to Railcraft. You now have to burn coal to do the same thing you used to do before, oh and spend a ton more resources on a completely redundant engine. Yea... good job.

If pollution were a thing in Minecraft, I could blot out the sun with charcoal. But have you tried running 12k rails using boosters? I have. It's not pretty. (Back in the Original Horizon's pack, which didn't have Railcraft, and needed to go to new chunks for manganese.)

Thank you, no. That said, with the advent of electric trains, which can run on RF, it's less of an issue. In 1.10 I'll be using all electric, but I'm not relaying what I've already put down. That said, end of the day it's not much difference whether you spend it producing steam in a locomotive, or in a generator producing RF to power a Dimensional Transceiver/Quantum Entangloporter.

Engines aren't redundant either. You can send one engine to any number of stops, while each DT connection needs another DT.

I would rather World Reset than have to ship stuff that distance. Or better yet, obviate needing to do that by being intelligent with worldgen from the beginning.

Yanno, kinda like what I'm doing now, not releasing the pack until the oregen mod is more stable. Because if not, the pack would've released like a month ago.

Shneekey, that shader+RTG combo is absolutely gorgeous. O_O

How well does that combo play with Underground Biomes, or is that mod even still a thing? (I recall it had some severe multiplayer server stability issues back when I last played, but I really was fond of the variety when digging.)

Is there a good place to read up on Immersive Engineering without watching youtube vids?

That was already my third world. I destroyed the first when I used an Ars Magicka Dig spell on a Rotary craft Gearbox. After I got it finished, other more conventional packs had come out and I had new ideas. And the world crashed, so there's always that.

I much prefer finished packs, I agree. But at the time, there wasn't one.

I don't know if Underground Biomes is still a thing or not, but I absolutely hated it when I worked with the Resonant Rise crew. All it does is fill up barrels with completely worthless 'totally not stone so you can't build crap with it' blocks. It needed a TON more features to make it all that it could have been. So it will not be appearing in ShneekeyCraft for 1.10.2, even if it does get released.

There's an in-game manual for Immersive Engineering. Craft a book and a lever. It is as comprehensive as Botania's, so it should be all you really need.

At least Geostrata had the same problem, though at least in Monster it was all Ore Dict with Cobble, so you could convert. May have been an FTB change though.

I'm hoping you've tweaked things to get large caves. I love building in huge natural caves.

RTG does this very well. Like, amazingly well. You've seen the mountains it can make. The caverns are just as amazing.

In that case, I can't wait.

There's also a config file setting to make even more epic caves which I... may have tweaked, ever so slightly...

I've gone mad with power with EnderIO and MineTweaker (which I guess the equivalent is now Craftweaker? Eh, whatever), so when I run into that kind of stuff I punch it in the face. I probably have way too many recipes to sink Division Sigils, and yet I crave more.

This sounds extremely exciting.

I've been wanting to do a gypsy wagon play of minecraft for years, just get a good worldgen mod combination with some of mod like traveling house to take a base camp with me, and just take off and explore the scenery rather than digging and techmodding until the apocalypse called boredom. Usually the worldgen mods are extremely disappointing and never have anything nearly as picturesque as that forest and river in your vid.

Also, hurray for in game help files, I'll have to take a look at that.

Shneekeycraft 0.1.1 for Minecraft 1.10.2 is officially RELEASED!

Features:

Realistic Terrain Generation gives you an epic world to explore in. Sadly, Biomes O' Plenty had to fall by the wayside due to issues involving not being able to disable their biometry-dependent gems, but trust me... you won't miss it.

Ruins now brings buildings, dungeons, and other terrain features for you to explore. It makes the world feel less 'virgin wilderness' and more 'post-apocalyptic with ruins of a previous civilization scattered about the terrain'.

For Tech, we have Immersive Engineering as our primary tech mod, giving the mod a nice steampunk flavor. EnderIO is there to back it up and to fill in some important niches that would otherwise go begging. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to move the recipes from the alloy smelter to the TiCo smeltery.

Tinker's Construct has returned with a whole new system for you to explore. Also, Aluminum Brass is no longer used to make molds, it's only gold now. There's a new one-shot mold made with clay that you can use to get started with.

Cooking With Blockheads gives you a kitchen to make food in, and Pam's Harvestcraft gives you plenty of things to make food with. Hunger Overhaul hasn't updated yet, neither has Agricraft, but AppleCore has a new AppleSkin which has the same GUI functionality of showing saturation as well as hunger.

For magic, we've got the newly re-envisioned Blood Magic, and also have Roots available as well.

For your transportation needs, we also have Expanded Backpacks, a very modular backpack mod with a lot of versatility.

I was planning on doing some epic things with oregen, but sadly that's not going to be able to happen for some time, so rather than wait an undisclosed amount of time, I've released what I have now.

Updated the pack to 0.1.2. Various mod updates, and fixed a config file to get rid of the stupid dirt slimes.

Any feedback that anyone would like to give?

I haven't gotten a chance to play much, I have surgery coming up in a few days and am frantically trying to get my work backlog blown out before then. Loving the realistic worldgen settings, tho'. Spawned on a snowy mountain surrounded by nice looking terrain and just getting used to the vMC and TiCo changes. (My last world was an RR3 server, so I'm a few vanilla versions behind.)

I'm perhaps an oddball, but I use the Tekkit launcher. I vaguely recall that was seen as a bit archaic last time I mentioned it in the minecraft thread.

Ouch! Been there, done that, didn't want the t-shirt. Get better, man.

Not archaic so much as troll-tastic. I decline to have anything to do with Tekkit.

Why? If you don't mind my asking. I don't recall the reasoning, if that was the case. I just remembered the bit where people were surprised I still played Voltz.

Old Tekkit had a bad habit of not asking authors for permission to put mods in a pack. They don't behave like that anymore, but the stigma is still attached.

Because the culture surrounding Tekkit is just... childish. To whit: Whalebox. The lionization and canonization of trolling. Performed by the mods of the community.

If the very moderators themselves indulge in this sort of behavior... I want no part of it.
