Crafting houserules or rulesports from other systems/editions?

The best thing I've see from another system would be either Heroes Against Darkness spellcasting system or 13th Age Skill system.

My DM keeps porting in MtG spells and monsters. Some of them have been pretty cool.

Also, we've used a very simple spell point variant. Instead of the DMG one, we've simply converted spell levels into MP in a 1-to-1 ratio. It hasn't changed much about the game; our spellcasters don't last that much longer than they normally would. It's just made casters easier to use, but not noticeably stronger. It's so nice to just track one number instead of seven different types of spell slots.
