LOCATION: Pickard Recreation Area

TIME: Just Before Sundown

The five of you are assembled in Pickard Recreation Area, having received a mysterious summons. The note was found in places you might not expect—inside a cash register for Lukas, under Solstice’s pillow, at her typical Sunday pew for Anna, and in a textbook for Cori and Max. The note almost seemed typed, its flowing cursive was so perfect. Each note read, “Meet at Pickard on June 17th. Right before Sundown. Others will be present.” Beyond that, the note held no clue as to the identity of its writer. You now all stand at the requested area, perhaps somewhat awkwardly.

Delivering something under a pillow was honestly not something unheard of to Solstice, but given the circumstances and content, much more strange than usual. Her mother knew nothing of the note. But given its appearance, a powerful individual seemed to be behind it. She said Solstice should go and see what it was about.

As dusk approached, Solstice wondered what disguise she should take on. Considering that she wanted to take her bow - just in case - that meant she needed to be a little creative. Hm. Now that she thought about it, why would it not need to be a bow? She had seen some of those foam toys before. Maybe....

Her appearance changed to appear a bit shorter and younger. She had light brown hair, hazel eyes, was dressed fairly casually, like for some outdoor sports. In her hands was still a bow, but clearly it looked like one of those cheap plastic toys now. Likewise her back now had a quiver. The tips of the arrows appeared to be little suction cups.

The note didn't specify where exactly in the park to be. But by intuition, she began sitting on a bench shaded by trees as the sun got close to setting. It was the closest one to the glade.

Just trying to roll with this. Hopefully I won't need to retcon anything. :smallcool:

Lucas was the second person to arrive on the scene. He had just left from an evening shift, and he was still wearing his work uniform. He had on a tight brown baseball cap, a golden collared polo shirt, and black paints. A shock of blond hair potruded from the side of his cap, and besides appearing a little skinny, he would be considered to be quite handsome. The note had been an unwelcome intrusion in an otherwise perfectly satisfactory day. They had handled the dinner rush quite well, and one of his spies had even reported that the KFC two blocks over was practically deserted. He didn't know what to make of the note, but he guessed it was something to do with the supernatural side of town. He wasn't involved in the scene, he looked after his interests and he didn't poke his head into other people's business.

The only person that he really knew in the scene was Warden Carpathia, and Lucas hadn't seen her in years. There was also that girl, Anna, from a while back, but Lucas didn't really know her or what she was. Still, on the off chance that Warden Carpathia was the person behind the message, Lucas showed up. He scanned the area, and was disappointed when he didn't spot her. That disappointment quickly turned into a low shimmering rage. Who dared to summon him like he was some lowly part-timer? Didn't they know time was money, and wasted time was lost money?

The only other person he saw was the girl sitting on the bench. Lucas noticed that she was quite pretty, but he didn't really care that much. He walked over to sit on the bench right beside her. He stared straight up at the setting sun without making eye contact. Did you send the note? Lucas asked bluntly.

Max

Max had been very surprised to find the strange note in the middle of a pile of papers he was grading, and considering he had already been on edge following the news of Sam Wellington’s death it was no surprise that he cut his next class short and drove straight home. Once there he tried to figure out the provenance of the note but didn’t manage to find anything other than the obvious fact that there was something supernatural about it. The location of the meeting and the aesthetics of the note however led him to suspect Sidhe involvement.

As little as he wanted to involve himself in some Sidhe plot he didn’t feel like he could safely ignore the summons so he came as instructed and, true to his growing reputation, he came prepared. He ditched his button-up shirt and slacks for cargo pants and a simple t-shirt, loaded his shotgun and his M-14 in his truck, and walked into the woods covered with his armoured coat, wearing a tactical belt with his pistol, baton, pepper spray and one potion strapped to it, the gun being barely hidden by the long coat. He was also carrying his paintball gun on a shoulder strap.

He arrived on the scene just in time to hear the McDonald's employee mention a note to a slightly too angelic kid. He casually walked in front of the bench and remarked

So I'm not the only one in the mailing list, good to know.

Solstice was about to respond to the scrawny-looking kid when a familiar face showed up: that Max person from some years ago.

The guy set her on edge. She kind of hoped he wouldn't recognize her, but then again, he already knew her nickname from before. And he was pretty sharp. It was only a matter of time before some proper introductions were made anyway.

She turned to face Lucas, who still hadn't been looking at her and responded, "No... I received a summons as well."

Then to the man standing before the bench she said, "Well it did say 'others will be present.'" Thinking on it more, she added, "At least mine did."

Lukas grunted as the girl responded to him. The lack of any immediate resolution was quite vexing. They couldn't have sent a goddamn text? Or at least asked politely?

He perked up again as yet another stranger entered the area. 'sup Grandpa The 20 year old nodded at the older man as he approached. He looked like some kind of try-hard with that unnecessarily large trench coat.

As he listened to his explanation, Lukas's expression darkened. He held on to the bench with a white knuckled grip. There was a loud snap as the wooden plank that he gripped broke beneath his hand. Lucas nearly fell to the ground. F*CK! Lucas swore as he caught himself. He looked over to the girl that he was sharing the bench with. Sorry, My bad. His early indignation was completely replaced by guilt. He offered the girl a hand if she needed it, and then dusted himself off. A keen observer would have noticed that his hand was not damaged by any of the splinters. He looked over to the strangers awkwardly. Wow. They really don't make things like they used to.

Solstice jumped slightly, or perhaps more accurately twitched, as the guy sitting beside her just about broke the bench seat in half.

athletics: [roll0] + 2

Unfortunately, she was not quite as quick to react, and her arms flailed a bit in an effort to catch herself. She dropped her bow, and it bounced harmlessly along the ground, reverting to its true form. She also nearly dropped her bag and just barely caught herself mere inches from the ground, but more importantly her fingers were even closer to the metal rivets of the bench. From their rusting appearance, they seemed to be steel or iron.

In retrospect, perhaps being within a ten-foot radius of it was actually a bad idea, but then again, she didn't expect some clumsy oaf to put her in real danger in the first place.

She carefully got up again, accepting the guy's help, and picked her bow up off the ground, which once again began to look like a plastic toy.

"I suppose people these days aren't as cautious nor considerate as they used to be either."

((BTW, think Firefly, not Matrix for Max’s coat…. Which gives me an idea))

Max clutched at his chest in mock hurt at being called “grandpa”. Even his students weren’t that disrespectful!

I never married

Before he could find out if the two got the reference the tall teenager broke the bench and the kid accidentally revealed there was some glamour at play. Max quickly backed up half a dozen steps and his right hand instinctively reached for his holster before he took a deep breath. He had expected supernatural involvement after all and the two didn’t seem aggressive.

Looks like there’s more to you two than meets the eye… So let’s introduce eachother shall we? I’m Max Duhamel, I’m a practitioner and I got a very enigmatic note telling me to come here.

He walked back to them, right hand held out for a handshake or, if needed, a force blast from his ring

It had been a lovely day, and the evening was turning out even nicer. Say what you want about the midwest (mostly that it's boring and lacks any appreciable character) but the weather sure is pleasant. Strolling along the idyllic little streets, replete with porch planters and American flags and a variety of Iowa-based college football memorabilia in nearly every conceivable form. It's depressing.

She steps off the sidewalk onto the well-tended grass of a picnic area and wonders where exactly this person wants to meet. And she hopes to God it's a person. Hopefully just some freshman or sophomore hoping to score with a senior transfer hottie who doesn't know anybody. She shakes her head. What happened to my life that that's the best-case scenario? Oh right - fire and death and all that. Nuts.

She walks past a baseball diamond, ignoring the teenage boys' stares. She'd had to give up a lot when she left Texas, and that meant selling pretty much everything she'd accumulated the prior years to make up for the cost of tuition and moving to a new school (albeit a much less expensive one, which her folks appreciated but were absolutely confused by). Fortunately she'd managed to save part of her wardrobe, because there was nowhere to shop around here and she can no longer afford proper clothes anyway. She continues through the park in brown leather boots, designer jeans and a sleeveless white top secured with a thick leather belt around her waist. Her hands are stuffed defensively in the pockets of a short black leather jacket and her hair, recently dyed a dark velvety purple, spills down her back.

She passes more pockets of activity, sizing up the people with mounting frustration. And then there's two kids arguing over a broken bench. She keeps walking but feels the familiar tingle and looks at them again. Definitely something going on there- there's something off with them both. Oh, and standing nearby is that professor Maxime in an overcoat bulging with an array of weapons and contraptions. What's that he's holding - a paintball gun? Jeez.

The two strangers are young, younger than her, but she feels all sorts of alarms going off. Maxime is at least a known quantity, and he doesn't appear threatened. "Hey freak. This is what you do when you're not being a science geek, dress up like the Terminator? Overcompensate much?"

The young girl replied, "We've met before, Mr. Duhamel. You have known me before as Solstice."

She looked down at his hand awkwardly for a moment before realizing what it is he wanted to do. She gingerly took Max's hand by her fingers and shook it gently, avoiding touching the rings. There was that electrifying feeling of touching a magical being.

She looked over to the woman with purple hair approaching. She made some comments Solstice didn't fully understand. Looking back over to Max, she asked, "A friend of yours?"

Max scoffed at Cori’s casual insult and shot back good-naturally

That’s rich coming from Cheerleader Carrie… I can’t shoot fire from my hands so I bring toys to spooky situation, sue me. I’m guessing you also got a note? Doesn’t seem like your style.

He shook Solstice’s hand and frowned slightly, trying to remember why that sounded familiar. It came to him.

Lucas helped pull her to her feet, with a strength beyond that of his flimsy looking frame. Lucas looked ashamed at Solstice's chastisement. He noticed the bow changing shape, but he didn't understand its significance. I'm sorry about that. I'll make it up to you. I promise. He sighed. He was normally a lot better at managing his temper when he was at work, but the strange circumstances were trying for him. I woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Can I have a do over? My name is Lucas, and it is a pleasure to meet you. He smiled at Solstice.

He turned to face the older man. He raised an eyebrow at his pronouncement. Are you Council? He asked.

He turned back to face the violet bombshell. Heh. Terminator. Nice one.

Head to the side, the young woman narrow her eyes at the action film hero simulacra before her. "Don't be a dork. Carrie Bradshaw was never a cheerleader." She takes her hands from her pockets and places ringed hands on her hips testily. "Yeah, I got a note. I was kinda hopin' it was a prank or somethin'. I don't like surprises."

The strangers note Corinne has a noticeable but inoffensive drawl. She looks the two of you over more closely - with an uncomfortable intensity, in fact. She nods to the young man coolly, if politely."Nah, no council here. Just a nosy neighbor." She takes a deep calming breath and runs the fingers of her right hand down though her vibrant locks. "Okay, I'll be up front with all y'all. Somebody aside from snoopy here knows us all, and we're all in on the spooky. Experience tells me that's somethin' to worry about. No offense, but I don't want anything gettin' out of hand here."

Not Council either. I agree with Corinne. Somebody knows too much. I'm fairly involved with the local community and I would never have pegged you for one of them Lukas, so I'm concerned. Did you bring your notes? Might be a clue there.

"I was the one who summoned you all here," a masculine voice suddenly says from a nearby thicket. The air shimmers briefly before a tall figure steps out, having been hidden within an immaculate veil. The man-- at least, what appears to be one-- strides forward, surveying the five assembled before him. His eyes are a deep royal purple, and his pupils are almond-shaped, similar to a cat's in medium lighting, betraying his nature as one of the Fae. "You were summoned because someone here threatens the balance of power. The murder of Samuel Wellington was not done by any mere mortal, but someone who opposes the person or persons I represent."

He clasps his hands behind his back, looking around the group. "Said person or persons believe the five of you have vested interest in upholding the status quo around here, and that you're the most capable of devising what they desire to know. As for what they desire to know-- they would like you to investigate who was responsible for Mr. Wellington's death. Mr. Wellington was a valuable ally, gifted with the unique talent of being able to pierce any veil or glamour, no matter how perfect or well-crafted it was. His death strikes a blow to my... shall we say client's abilities to remain informed of goings-on in the area. They are in the dark, and fear that with Mr. Wellington's death and the note plastered on his door, there is reason to believe more deaths will come."

The Fae man brings forth his hands now, though they remain empty. "I am sure you all must have many questions. I have been instructed to answer them to the best of my ability, but before we start: no, there are no current suspects. Otherwise you would not have been called."

Corinne starts with a really undignified "eep!" and whips around toward the voice. She reaches into her short-sleeved jacket and draws out a small stick, about eight to ten inches long and thicker than a pencil. It's covered in a bewildering array of intricate etchings.

Taking his measure she grimaces with distaste and an audible "ugh."

Against her better judgement, with lives allegedly on the line and a mystery under way, her mind starts conjuring a list of questions needed to begin such an investigation. Then her heart slows back down and common sense reasserts itself. No. Nope. I'm not getting involved with fae big enough to outright demand a deep-dish.

"I think maybe you have us confused with like, anyone else."

No. Waaaaay too many questions and getting this involved with something this dangerous ... totally against the whole point of her coming here.

Lucas frowned a bit when Cori and Max stated that they were not with the White Council. From what he recalled from Warden Carpethia, the White Council was the organization of Good Wizards. So if they weren't with the Council, what did that mean? Lukas shrugged at Max's inquiry. I don't really know anyone in the community, and I never really cared that much for it. I don't have a habit of getting involved in other peoples' business.

Lucas had finished tossing the broken planks of wood in the bushes (it wouldn't be good if some toddler hurt themselves on it) when the Fae appeared. He let out a small yelp, and glared at the Fae as he listened to its explanation.

He opened and closed his hands repeatedly. He felt the urge to sink his claws into the flesh of those who wronged him. Mr Wellington was a Valued Customer. Lucas growled. As Shift Manager, I cannot let this insult go unanswered.

He started the first round of inquiries. Somehow, I don't think your going to answer this question, but who are the enemies of your client? The ones that Mr Wellington foiled using his abilities?

Solstice said to Lucas, "I accept your apology. Thankfully there is very little, if anything, to make up for..."

---

When the Sidhe appeared, it was abrupt and just a little startling, but of course Solstice found nothing wrong with his appearance. In fact, other Fae popping out of veils just to reprimand her, surprise her, or what-have-you wasn't an all too uncommon thing for her either...

If her deductions were correct, they already have an adversary which is one and many to begin with: the Winter Court. But whoever it was could be anyone, really. Especially if this Sidhe's "client" had nothing to do with the Summer Court.

"I think I have a few more-important and answerable questions: What do you mean when the balance of power is threatened? Who is requesting this investigation? And what will be offered in exchange for this information?"

When the Sidhe appeared Max was slightly startled, though not the extent Cori was. He quickly recognized him for what he was and sighed and muttered something dejected in French

Eh bordel, une histoire de Sidhe (roughly Crap, the Sidhe are involved)

Cori's reaction was expected, if it was important and interesting enough she would come around. He made a point not to get in the young woman's way on campus (both out of respect for her and fear of HR) but even so he knew she was quickly becoming bored out of her skull in sleepy Simpson College.

When the strangely intense young man started talking he cringed, he didn't seem to know much about the Sidhe and was walking dangerously close to saying something dangerous. Max was relieved when Solstice cut him off and seemed to know the right questions to ask.

Still, he jumped in with a few questions of his own

What she said. Also, you have us at a disadvantage sir, who are you and what name do you go by? Also, five of us? If somebody else is hiding under a veil I swear I will shoot you if you don't show yourself now

Cori looks ... concerned when the rest listen to the Sidhe in earnest, but she stares at the McDonald's kid in bewildered horror. What is this guy's issue?

Max loudly threatens some hidden fifth person and Cori steps aside, willing power down her hands into the wand and rings. She's keenly aware of the buzzing energy suddenly filling the area and the people - kids - still nearby in the park. If lives are at risk (more so than right here and now, at any rate) she hopes this fae talks fast. But even then she's always heard you can't trust them no matter what. She resists the urge to simply blast him since it seems lives are on the line.

Annabelle

Having arrived a little later than anticipated, Anna had slowly approached the group when the rather obvious-fae was being obvious with that disguise walked foward and began to talk to the entire group.
Not wanting to put TOO much notice on herself (for more reasons than just 'it would be a bit rude', it was more since she hadn't been having the best of interactions with the Sidhe), Annabelle decided to just slowly walk up the stand near enough to the rest, behind then, in order to show that she was clearly a part of the meet-up.

Annabelle is wearing what looks to be a simple white summerdress, barely any make-up, as well as a what looked like a pair of regular running shoes. It was all very feminine in a more mild and comforting way, rather than something like a low-cut T-shirt, miniskirt and high heels with enough heel to slay vampires.
The dress was especially complimenting her snowy white hair and lightly pale skin.

Woodsman
2016-07-08, 10:18 AM
"This would be our fifth," the Fae smiled as Annabelle stepped forward. "I thought she had arrived already."

He turns and raises an eyebrow at Cori. "I believe you'd like to avoid the Council, yes? Should you not investigate Mr. Wellington's death and halt the machinations of whoever caused it, the Council will likely intervene. Perhaps it is best for us all we avoid that, yes?"

He turns back to Lukas. "The breadth and depth of my client's enemies is vast. Three Courts of vampires, the entirety of Winter, even some demons-- all have interest in harming my client. As I said, we are as much in the dark about this as anyone."

Solstice's turn was next. "Mr. Wellington was a valuable ally to my client, as I said. His death is no less than a declaration of war, which will upset the status quo regardless of the victor. We have no idea who killed him, though, and as such, my client remains vulnerable to further attacks. My client wishes to remain anonymous at this time, but rewards may be determined upon successful completion of the investigation."

He gave Max a smile. "I am Aldoris," he said simply.

Gorgon_Heap

This "Aldoris" has a point, even if he's acting completely out of self-interest or saving his "client's" connections rather than concern for innocent lives. Cori feels dirty just thinking about the inhumanity that drives creatures like that. And he's saying any number of other such beings could be involved. Terrific.

She peers over her shoulder at the newcomer, another short girl - this one with a strange internal luminescence. It just keeps getting better. What are these kids? she thinks ironically, being only a few years their senior, if appearances can be judged accurately. They're not practitioners. They're all ... off.

Turning back to the fae, she tries not to roll her eyes. "Yeah, okay. Keep talking."

So.. Vampires, half of the Faeries, and possibly Demons. Lukas shrugged. It's a start at least. He looked suspiciously at Cori when the Fae mentioned that she wouldn't want Council attention. What was her deal if she wanted to avoid the good wizards?

Lukas pulled out his Android phone and opened the browser. On Google, he searched for "Samuel Wellington" and excluded the term "murder", with the hope of uncovering some history of his activity prior to recent events. He had personally met Mr. Wellington on a couple of occasions when he worked at his restaurant, but he didn't know much about the man. Trying to find out more information seemed like a good way to start this investigation.

As soon as he hit the 'search' button, the screen froze. Lucas tried to restart the phone, but it refused to boot up. He scowled and put it away.

Lukas's attention was diverted when he recognized the newcomer. Anna? He said in surprise. What are you doing here? Lucas shuffled to face Anna, the Fae completely forgotten about. Something about her presence commanded his focus, and he couldn't figure out what it was. She was a pleasant enough sight for the eyes, that was certain at least. But considering the other young women that were present, Lucas knew that it wasn't just that. Lucas stared at her with an intensity that an impartial observer would describe as unsettling.

Solstice turned around to see Annabelle. That was also a familiar face to her.. but at least not one which gave her worry. She supposed once this meeting was over with Aldoris, she would have the time to properly reintroduce herself and ask how she was doing.

Turning back to the Sidhe, she said, "In all fairness, if this murder was an act of war, then our getting involved in any way is also no less a declaration of joining your client's side in that war. We are to be at odds with unknown adversaries as it is. At the very least, we need to know who our allies are. And I don't see the harm, either. Apparently your client's enemies seem to know whom they are targeting.. no?"

She continued, "I can surmise your client is either Summer or perhaps merely a noble high in their ranks. For them I would gladly give my aid. But if this were the case, why not simply say it?"

Anna instantly recognised Lukas the moment his eyes landed upon her.
"Uh, hi Lukas." she replied and did a little wave-motion with her hand. "Well i sort of... took a trip to the local church for some peaceful time-off... and ended up finding a note for me telling me to meet up here." Lucas broke his slack-jawed expression long enough to respond to Anna. Her actual explanation didn't make sense to him, but he was distracted by something else.Well its a uh.. he said awkwardly its... good to have you with us. He turned back to face the matter at hand. Does anyone else here have a phone? Mine is acting up. Lucas hadn't been around the supernatural long enough to discover the connection between Fae, Mortal Magic, and technological failures.

Despite his thuggish introduction, Lucas had very good people skills. They were essential to his day-job. It was necessary to understand his co-workers and subordinates in order to be able to manage them effectively, and being able to read ones' customers in order to understand how they react was also essential for improving the quality of service. Now, he thought about how to best break down and topple the problem before them.

I'm don't know all of you, but if you've stuck around, I'm going to assume that your willing to make Mr. Wellington's murder your problem. He said calmly. In order to balance out the Wrong that has been committed against us, we need to figure out who was responsible. Lets brainstorm some ideas about how to approach this problem. Personally, I don't bring too much to the table. I'm good at breaking stuff, but that's pretty much it as far as weird stuff goes. I suggest we try to enter his home, see if their are any clues that have been missed by the police. I'm willing to try that tonight actually.

Lucas turned back to face Aldoris. That invisibility thing was pretty useful. Can you go with us and help us get inside? Since after all, your asking us to do work on your client's behalf? I would really not want to get into a fight with the cops if I can help it.
While he was talking with Aldoris, Lucas tried to get a read on him. He wasn't being as co-operative as he could be, and Lucas was suspicious of him.

Aldoris smiled politely at Solstice-- almost too politely. "A keen question indeed. Allow me to answer you thusly: by agreeing to work for my client, you absolve yourself of responsibility in the matter. You are neutral third parties being hired by one belligerent, which would make you mercenaries, I suppose the word would be. No sane being would make more enemies than they need to. My client has requested anonymity at this time, and as such, I am not allowed to reveal who exactly they are to you. Whoever these enemies are, though, they most certainly know who to target."

Aldoris turned back to Lukas, his eyebrows raised. "While your compliment is appreciated, I am not allowed to assist you. I was ordered to summon all of you here to do this-- otherwise, I would be investigating this myself, would I not?" he says, flashing a sleazy grin, though the grin falters ever so slightly. "It's highly unlikely you will come into conflict with mortal authorities, however. I expect that should you explain yourselves to the chief of police, he may even be willing to assist you."

Lukas get the sense that this guy's a bit of a scaredy-cat-- he has no interest in going into combat if he can help it.

Solstice folds her arms skeptically, her expression rather neutral as she attempts to flush out all the implications of the job. "So your client would have us be 'mercenaries'... Perhaps, said in the best of light, a third party trying to get to the truth of the matter. But your client's enemies should know all-too-well what we'd plan on doing with that information and how it will affect them. I doubt such status will spare us any conflict and not make them our enemies, regardless."

After a pause to let that sink in, she asks, "Well, supposing we do uncover the information you seek, how shall we contact you again?"

I see Lucas frowns. He noted that Aldoris specifically mentioned that he had been ordered to summon them. Not that he had been forbidden to help. It seemed that Aldoris wouldn't lift a finger of their behalf unless the client explicitly asked for it.

You described us as Mercanaries, yes? That changes how I view my role in the matter. If we are to be Mercanaries, then that clearly implies that we will receive compensation for our efforts. Lucas folded his arms and stared at the evasive Fae. The Greed of Fafnir was beginning to assert itself. What treasure does your client possess that he thinks would be a tribute worthy of my attention?

There are some rules to this kind of talk that you clearly don't know about, so until Solstice and I have the time to clue you in please stop making sweeping statements. And also stop using us, right now there is no us, there might be in a few minutes but the distinction is important.

He turned his attention to Aldoris, glad for every minute he had helped his little brother study for law exams.

Aldoris, you have said some troubling things so I would like to clarify a bit. It is true that I was already considering investigating Mr Wellington's death, and you made some good points as to why the others present here might also want to do so. However, if some or all of us were to decide to undertake this investigation I do not see how we could be considered under the employ of your client, or their emissaries in any way. If they wish to provide us information to help us because it is in their interest that our investigation succeeds, then so be it. I would be comfortable with doing this without knowing who or what your client is.

Mercenaries, or Emissaries to use the wording of the Accords, do much more that trade information with their principal and, assuming your client is bound by the Accords, undertake many responsibilities and risks for them. I would not agree to such a relationship with a being that I do not know, and I strongly advise the others no to either. A technicality perhaps under some lights, but technicalities are important.

Instead what I propose would simply be a transaction between concerned parties, and since the killer's identity is clearly more valuable to your client then what little they know about the killing that transaction would include additional consideration. For my part I would be satisfied by a favour of equal importance.

Once the investigation is completed, it seems the next step will probably be acting against this enemy. If this is something I and whatever others might join are willing to do at that time your client would have to reveal themselves and actually employ us as emissaries in order to ensure we resolve the situation in their best interest. I will be glad to have this discussion if and when we get to that point.

He looked around at the others

That seem reasonable to you guys?

Cori's head is spun by the speed with which this has moved. Helping people she gets. Keeping the Council away she gets. Agreeing to work for a Sidhe who won't introduce themselves and whose motives could actually be literally anything sounds like much more trouble than it's worth.

And who would the chief of police be willing to listen to us exactly? This questions she does voice, though whether she's heard amongst the arguing is something else.

Max actually makes several good points (beyond telling this burger kid to keep his head in the game. What's up with him?). She's actively avoided contact with more powerful Sidhe, so maybe, just maybe, Max really knows what he's doing. Keeping a distance is clever, as is keeping us off the hook for some whole crazy thing rather than only possibly agreeing to just one part at a time.

As Lucas waited for the Faerie to respond, he felt the unwelcome presence of Max's hand on his shoulder. As he heard Max talk to him, his blood began to boil. It wasn't in response to the ideas that he presented, but in the way that they were communicated. The condescending body-language and word choice set him off.

He stared forward, continuing to look at Aldoris. That is the property of McDonalds USA, a subsidiary of the McDonalds Corporation. Remove your hand. What the hell was this guy's problem with him? Who did he think he was?

He turned to look at Max I did not ask for your intervention. I was merely discussing what his client was willing to grant me as tribute, in return for my intervention in this manner. A contract is a contract, regardless of whatever of the being that you discuss it with. So yes, I do know what I am doing. As for my use of the term us, that was how the Faerie choose to refer to this group as a group of Mercenaries. Thus, by being a member of said group, the term also applied to me. Nowhere did I claim to negotiate anything on your behalf.

He turned back to Aldoris. I speak on behalf of myself and myself only. Tell me, what treasure will be given to me in exchange for producing this information?

Anna

Annabelle gave a half-smile in response to Lukas' comment about it being nice to have her with them all, but did not say anything though, deciding it was best to not say anything when unsure how really to respond. Body Language could do the talk for her for now at least.

Although haven't ever really thought of herself as being an ideal merc, the question of payment and job requirements was far more importent to herself at least. "Uh, yeah, I'm kinda curious as to how we are expected to act if we, say run into major trouble that was not part of the 'original plan', so to speak. I mean, look at me, I'm not exactly World Class Fighter material. I haven't even taken a self-defense class before. I'm a Waitress/Bartender, not Ex-military. All i got is my faith, smarts and prior cheerleader experience..." She said out, clearly intent on making it clear what exactly it is she could help with, if anything at all. False pretenses only hurt the ability to cooperate.
"And on another note, I'm nothing special either. I'm not a wizard, Werewolf or Gun-Capable Badass... So yeah, what exactly is expected of us in terms of specific requirements or thoughts of our individual usefulness. If all that's expected of me is to 'look pretty' or some such, then i'll say it right now: I'm not interested in such a 'job' position in any capacity. And since you, Mister Aldoris isn't really human either, I'd request that you'd give us your word plainly that this is not a setup planned by you, anyone that you work for, or indirectly have been hired to ensure our cooperation in order to spring a trap or other type of setup against us. I do not trust you Fae-folk at all, and i want all my damn bases covered if I'm going to be doing any sort of work or giving any type of aid to you. I would only say that it would be fair, since you ARE requesting that we inspect a murder." She said, clearly showing her rather apprehenisible feelings towards Aldoris.

Aldoris smiled at Solstice, that too-charming, sleazy smile from before. "While it is entirely possible you will encounter adversity, any conflicts you engage in will be considered my client's responsibility. Once you've received payment for your services, any pressing continuing conflicts will be transferred from you to my client. As for contacting me once more, simply return to this spot and speak my name three times. I'll hear you."

Aldoris turned his attention to Max, eyebrows raised, clearly somewhat impressed with Max and his suggestion. I must say, Mr. Duhamel, you are quite well-versed in these discussions. I believe such an arrangement would be beneficial to you and would grant my client the same results, so I believe we may agree on such a transaction. Such a favor would be granted to you as payment."

To Lucas now, "Ah, of course, the dragon-blooded is concerned with monetary recompense. Would ten thousand U.S. dollars, or its equivalent as appraised by dwarven merchants, be suitable for you?"

Aldoris glanced at Annabelle. "Combat prowess is not the only skill useful in an investigation. You have a gift given to you by your angelic ancestors, a valuable one at that. I'm sure you could aid in the investigation.

As for the issue of trust, that matters not. What matters is that this threat presents a danger to all of you and my client. You will find no trap at the conclusion of this investigation, I can promise you that. My client has requested to meet you upon conclusion of the investigation as it is, and to spring a trap before, or even during such a meeting, would be a serious breach of honor. As such, I can guarantee that my client and I will do you no harm until after such a meeting, presuming you do nothing to insult either of us."

"I suppose this negotiation has nearly run its course," Solstice said matter of factly. "But tell me... you said the mortal authorities are unlikely to give us trouble. Why is that? Are they... also working with your client?"

Admittedly Solstice didn't know too much about how the police and such worked, but her assumption was nearly all were unaware of, to say the least, the other half of their world. They wouldn't take kindly to random intruders and would most likely overreact to anything they were not expecting.

Max

Max took his hand off Lucas' shoulder and thought

Seriously, what is that kid's deal. Tribute? Does he think he's the second coming of Brennus or something?

Before talking to the Sidhe.

((After Aldoris speaks))

Thank you, I read, a lot. The geek will inherit the earth and all that. I believe we can deal then, but let's hear from the others first

Dragonkin, child of angels, very confused changeling, sorceress and me... sounds almost like a DnD party... This is gonna be a weird week

While he was waiting for the other 3 to answer Max started to clear his mind, preparing to use the Sight. They were all going on the assumption Aldoris was a Sidhe lord and that they could therefore trust the letter of his words at least. He intended to confirm that before agreeing to anything.

Lucas folded his arms, clearly not pleased with the Fae's response. That is not sufficient. I have Obligations that I have made at my place of employment. I have been cultivating a reputation for punctuality and reliability there, and suddenly disappearing without prior notice will harm that reputation. Even if I claimed a sympathetic excuse such as losing a family member, the fact remains that it will be percieved that I failed to meet my commitment. In this matter, the damage to my Reputation is more concerning then mere compensation to my time and energy. I trust that you understand the importance of Reputation.

Here is my counter proposal. In addition to the ten thousand that you promised me for my time and energy in this matter, you will also provide support to restore my lost reputation. This will be accomplished through Fae support to enhance my reputation in my place of employment upon my return. Use magic to attract noticably more customers to my store when I'm on a shift. Or perhaps a Fae-enhanced advertising campaign.

Corinne's arms drops unconsciously, her etched wand at her side through both astonishment and antipathy. What am I dealing with here?

She recognizes all the words, but they're not making a lot of sense to her just yet, seemingly jumbled up in nonsensical order. Dragon? Angel? And what exactly are they doing?

Angrily, she interjects, "Wait. Are ... assuming for a sec we can take anything he says seriously, are you really bargaining for money against innocent lives?" She's completely forgotten the "mercenary" part. That doesn't mean anything to normal people - people who don't foresee entering dangerous territory, metaphorical or not, like soldiers. Especially not without knowing who they're really working for. She's been there before, and it's not good.

"I'm all for self-preservation, and money is nice, but you can't, or your shouldn't, just turn your back when people might die because your price hasn't been reached!" she says, her revulsion to the idea clouding her logic.

Solstice stifled a giggle towards Lukas's attitude. Laughing at him would be quite rude right now. The topic of reputation was something she certainly agreed with, but... what on earth could this fellow be doing?

'Fae. enhanced. advertising. campaign'? What was that third word again?

She was as much skeptical and amused as she was curious and mystified.

However, she was the first to respond to Corinne. "Assuming Aldoris's client is also Fae, this bargaining cannot be avoided. As is customary, whenever something is taken - for example, an invaluable piece of information - something of equal value must be given in exchange. Although now that I think about it, even if all five of us worked together to uncover the killer's identity, it would only take but a single person to deliver it..."

Turning to Aldoris she continues, "Therefore, I believe it is in our interests to all be present when the information is delivered and decide on the compensation for each person before your client. I'd hate to see anyone unhappy with the exchange."

Annabelle raised an eyebrow at that comment from Mister High-and-Mighty Fae..... Angelic Heiritage? Seriously? "Are you joking? I mean, i know you fae folk can't directly lie, but seriously? Angels? I mean, i do people there's a force of good in the world and is more than willing to call it God. But Angels, Feathery wings and everything? Whats next, gonna tell me that Lucifer is ruling hell as well? And i guess Arch Angel Michael is fluttering around in Heaven as well? I mean... come on, you've got to be kidding.... Vampires i can deal with, heck even faeries is fine.... jeez..." She said, clearly not having known prior about her special heiritage. She had just believed it was an oddity about her that caused funny-stuff to happen when one stared into her eyes for a bit too long.... but having an Angel Ancestor was rather big to be told just outright like that.
She needed to sit for a bit and did not care much who was sitting where, just as long as there was a space for her. "Well... i guess there's more to this world that just vampires, Fairy Tale creatures and wizardly wizards..." She was clearly looking like she needed a minute, since she knew that, unless this Fae Guy was told something false but believed it was true, she had a freaking angel grand-grand-grand-grand (+/- a few/a lot) Mother or Father.

(Please do bear in mind that my character's Lore is +0 (aka. Mediocre). She doesn't know a whole heck of a lot about the 'magical world', so to speak. Max was quite pleased at Cori's response, and quite baffled at Lucas'. That kid was just off, and he sort of made the part of him in charge of avoiding lions on the savannah antsy. But at least he should be useful as a meat shield if it came to combat. He opened his mouth a few times but decided not to answer.

He felt sorry for Anna, to be told something so fundamental in such a cavalier manner couldn’t be easy, even if it didn’t come with worldview-shattering revelations. Given this it seemed like as good a time as any to check the accuracy of the Sidhe’s statements.

He whispered to Cori:

I’m going to use the Sight, if I start frothing at the mouth or something please cover my eyes and knock me out

And positioned himself to see Aldoris, Anna and Lucas at least (he knows Cori and has already soulgazed Solstice so…) at the same time before closing his eyes, taking a few deep cleansing breath and opening them to see a very different version of the quiet evening in the forest.

((Don’t quite remember how this works, I’ll have to check my books this evening, but yeah, Max is using his Third Eye here))

"The mortal authorities have reason to believe they have a spree killer on their hands. They'd like him caught before he can kill again, of course. The chief of police is aware of our existence to some extent, though I am unaware of to what extent exactly.

As for your recompense, Fafnirkin, I suggest you not push your luck. We can provide an advertisement campaign equivalent to ten thousand U.S. dollars, the value in money, or a mix of the two, but that is what we can provide. Or perhaps you don't think you're up to the challenge?" Aldoris asks Lukas, a sneer on his face. (Compel "Only One Tiger on the Mountain" for one fate point).

"Such an arrangement would be satisfactory. All five of you shall be present upon presentation of the information then, yes?" Aldoris asks, glancing between the five. "If so, I believe the majority of these negotiations may be concluded."

As Max opens his Third Eye, he sees Aldoris, Anna, and Lukas as they truly are. Aldoris looks much as he does now, a powerful purple aura radiating around him as befitting a Sidhe lord. Additionally, and perhaps more curiously, a rosebush appears entwined around his body, entrenched firmly in place within his skin. He is very clearly a noble Fae, and a part of the Summer Court as well, but the rosebush is particularly unusual for a typical Summer Fae.

Annabelle is a different sight entirely. Her face remains the same, but with a bright white light surrounding her, a golden halo sitting behind her head. A pair of white, feathery wings extends from her back. Her clothing has become a pure white robe, dazzling in how clean it is. It would seem that Aldoris was correct about her angelic heritage.

Lukas' eyes are smoldering now, a purple steam leaking from his mouth. At the same time, his draconic form seems superimposed over him, the two flickering back in forth in Max's vision. A massive wingless dragon, its foreclaws dug into Lukas' shoulder, looms over him, sizzling drool dripping from its mouth and withering the vegetation at Lukas' feet. Its eyes are locked firmly on Aldoris, its tail thrashing around behind it.

Max has a rough idea that Aldoris is a member of a Court within the Summer Court, and high up in that Court at that. He also has a general sense of Annabelle and Lukas' core aspects.

However, the strain of such a vision is a little much even for his mental fortitude. He takes one mental stress and needs to make another Discipline roll.

"Well, assuming nothing happens to any of us.." Solstice begins a little uneasily, "that arrangement will work. I would still expect any who are not able to be present for whatever reason to be compensated as well... um.."

Her poise faltered, curiosity getting the better of her. "If any of you don't mind my asking, is ten thousand.. U. S. dollars worth a lot?" Her speech was a bit slow and unnatural in this regard. "Worth risking one's life and ensuring the balance?"

"I am confused.. how can what amounts to a pile of nearly identical decorated papers have any real value?"

Lucas looked over to Cori as she addressed him. He felt a pang of guilt as he heard her accusations. There were a bunch of thoughts swirling in his head, remnants of older moments of reflection that he had in his life. That is a discussion which would be more appropriate for another time. He wasn't dismissing her outright, but he also wasn't terribly eager to bare his heart in front of the Fae.

As he listened to Aldoris respond, Lucas's blood began to boil. He clenched his fists, and he glared Aldoris with a luck made of pure venom. Consider yourself fortunate Fairy. This Murderer has already committed an offence against me which must be answered in kind. If this was not the case, I would have walked away for your insult. A part of Lucas knew that he was being manipulated by the Fae, but his pride wouldn't let him back down. He would show this miserable creature what he was truly capable of.

Lucas spat on the ground, and a noxious vapor wafted up from it. It formed a green-purplish mist that settled heavily in the air. We have an Accord. That exact distribution and form of monetary compensation will be decided by me at the time the information is turned over.

In response to Solstice's inquiries, he gave her a curious look. Is 10000$ worth a life? I saw an article somewhere that said E.P.A. values a human life at 9.1 million dollars, so I don't think its equal from that perspective. Its enough to get a decent used car, not that I drive anyways. Regardless, it only has value because people choose to give it value. It represents an approximate trade of goods and services for other goods and services through an intermediary. The last part of Lucas's comments soundly like it was rehashed from a civics class. The discussion on money was one of the few things that Lucas had bothered to pay attention to in school.

Someone watching closely would have noticed that Max was starting to sweat in the cool evening air as he wrestled with the undiluted reality of the scene

((so if I need to take another discipline roll I can make another Lore roll to right?))

Part of him wanted nothing else than to close the Sight but he didn't feel it was completely time. He focused on the rose bush growing on Aldoris, trying to figure out if it was a parasitic or symbiotic relationship or even something else entirely

Solstice listened to Lukas's explanation. To be fair she was already vaguely familiar with the concept that they traded this money because they believed it would ultimately be accepted by someone else. How this belief came about and where any of that real value was still eluded her. Corinne's answer seemed to contradict what Lukas said.

The girl looked to others, including Aldoris for more opinions on the matter. But perhaps this wasn't the time nor place for a lesson on the craziness of mortal economics.

The ten thousand dollars isn't necessarily reflective of the dangers presented-- rather, it's payment for a few days of work. Perhaps even a week. Max finally managed to pull out of the vision and closed the Sight. He closed his eyes and wobbled on his feet slightly before refocusing. The two teenagers were storming off before getting the information Aldoris had offered while Cori had apparently forgotten to ask for anything for herself. He shrugged a bit, he certainly understood not wanting to touch Sidhe business with a ten foot pole, but at the same time why not get something more out of work they were already going to do?

He called out to the retreating Anna and Lucas:

Don’t you guys want to hear his information?

Back to Aldoris:

Alright I agree to the terms we discussed, I will trade you, and by extension your employer, the results of my investigation against whatever relevant information you’re at liberty to provide and a favour equivalent to the difference in value of the exchanged information. Max slipped his ring back on and took a small notebook and a pen out of a pocket in his coat. He shot off a series of questions and listened attentively to the answers, asking for clarifications if necessary, jotting down key points in Latin as he went.

What were Mr Wellington’s magical and mundane home defenses like? How were they bypassed?

What exactly did Mr Wellington do for your employer? Did he have other clients or associations?

Assuming your people got there before the police, what was the scene like? How did he die?

Was anything retrieved from the crime scene before the police got there?

Did Mr Wellington have any enemies personally?

Did he work for other people, entities, groups or powers than your employer?

What is the Nevernever around Mr Wellington’s house like? Is it somebody or thing’s domain?

Did Mr Wellington leave a ghost?

"In terms of mundane defenses, there was not a lot beyond his home alarm system. Magically, the home was protected by a threshold generated by his family. The defenses, though, were not bypassed at all-- Mr. Wellington was murdered outside of his home, where no magical protections were present.

Mr. Wellington was occasionally called upon for his unique gift in order to assess the presence of any glamours overlaying an area. He was particularly useful in fending off Red Court vampires, as he could see them for what they truly were, regardless of the strength of their human disguise. They didn't have much presence in the area, thanks to him, so they may be a good suspect. As for other clients, he was exclusively under contract with my client.

Mr. Wellington was torn in half. A most gruesome murder to be sure. Clearly not the work of mortal hands.

Nothing was retrieved by my client's people from the scene, though they weren't given much time before mortal authorities arrived.

He had no personal enemies that we are aware of. It seems unlikely it was anything personal-- Mr. Wellington represented a valuable asset to my client, and was otherwise an unassuming man.

The Nevernever surrounding his house was not particularly special before this incident, but now seems to be marred somewhat. Whatever killed him certainly left an impression.

He did not leave a ghost as far as we are aware. Spirits are not my specialty, nor are they truly the specialty of any Fae. I am unaware of the presence of any mediums in the area as well, so contacting his spirit, assuming he even left one, would be particularly difficult.

Now, are there any other questions? Or shall I leave you all to it?"

"You said Mr. Wellington had a family. In what form? Wife? Children? Who lived with him, and what other family might he have that doesn't live with him?"

"Can you describe how the lands changed near his home? Or perhaps it would be easier to just see it for ourselves... is there anything dangerous there now?"

"Where was Mr. Wellington killed, then? And do you know at what time and date?"

Woodsman
2016-07-14, 09:45 PM
"Mr. Wellington had a wife and two children who lived with him. Well, the oldest was at the time, as he's off to college elsewhere during school months.

The Nevernever around his home is... colder now, for lack of a better term. More barren. There's nothing dangerous there now beyond whatever imprint his killer left, which must be a strong one to leave such an effect on the Nevernever's landscape.

He was killed in his front yard in the early hours of the morning several days ago, on June 12th. I don't have an exact time for you."

"I see... I can't think of much else relevant to the murder to ask..." Still one last question came to her. "Do you or your client have any other contacts we may be able to get in touch with for any reason? Once the group was finished with Aldoris, Max volunteered to use his truck to get everyone over to Lucas's place. Max being an experienced practitioner had an older truck, one that relied mostly on mechanical components as opposed to a plethora of electrical sensors for feedback and control. Annabelle and Lucas tossed their bicycles in the back. Lucas had never contemplated owning a car. They were expensive and not necessary from his perspective. His inhuman strength and endurance combined with Indianola's small size meant that a bicycle was adequate for his needs. Lucas claimed shotgun, with the excuse of being the navigator. After a bit of reassurance, Solace was given a blanket to cover her exposed skin with. She took the middle seat where she was mostly surrounded by the fabric of the upholstery.

After a brief drive, the group arrived at an apartment building near the outskirts of town. It wasn't close to the college, so there wasn't a noticeable student population. The group looked out of place, considering the population of the building where mostly working class African Americans. Lucas lead the group up five flights of stairs, to the very top of the building. There wasn't an elevator installed, (which definitely violated some building code) so the apartments at the top where less expensive. Lucas fished his keys out of his pocket, and opened the door to let the group inside.

Describing Lucas's appartment as a 'home' didn't quite feel like a good fit. 'Lair' seemed like a better choice. It was a studio apartment, it only had one room and a separate bathroom. The air felt a bit too warm, not enough to make it uninhabitable but enough to make it slightly uncomfortable. It was cooling off now that the sun had set, but Lucas never bothered running the A/C. His unnatural endurance made it so that he was more tolerant of temperature extremes. There was a small pile of unwashed Tupperware lying on top of the stove. A cursory inspection would reveal that the stove was rarely used for its intended purpose. There was a small table with a set of four chairs. Lucas hadn't bought them himself, the previous owner had gifted them to him since she didn't want the hassle of taking them to her new home. There wasn't a bed in sight. Instead, there was a pile of blankets in one corner. Opposite that corner, there was a desk with a desktop computer on it, along with a nice computer chair. On the walls there were a set of two posters. One of them depicted a group of four white 30 somethings, with the title 'Imagine Dragons' and a set of signatures beneath it. The other one depicted a silhouette of a White haired woman whispering into the ear of a green-skinned woman. It bore the title 'Wicked'. Beneath the poster lying next to the wall, was a scarred baseball bat along with a worn leather baseball glove.

Lucas glanced back at the group. Come on in. Lets figure out what our next move is.

Corinne walks in behind their hot-tempered host and looks around. It's typical enough of people people of their age group she doesn't muster much of an opinion (except for the Wicked poster - she'd always wanted to see the production with Kristen Chenowith) . She takes immediate note of the computer and makes sure to stay calm and as far away from the thing as the small room would allow. It wouldn't do to send Lucas' into some fit by melting his machine by accident.

Max

Before going up the stairs Max held Anna back for a private word. He spoke softly with a concerned tone. She was not the first person he had explained the facts of the weird to, and even in less extreme cases it was a traumatic process

Seems like it was a lot to take in for you earlier, but Aldoris is fae and the Fae are unable to tell lies... You obviously don't know much about the supernatural side of the world, I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have after we settle on a plan. I have a ton of books you may find helpful back at my place

They they followed the others up the stairs to Lucas' apartment, Max closing the march. He waited outside the threshold until invited and walked in, taking in the spartan appartment. He suppressed a smile at the posters and raised a concerned eyebrow at the computer.

You should unplug your computer Lucas, Corrine and I in the same room could very well fry it otherwise, tech doesn't like mortal magic for... some reason I've never had adequately explained, though I do have a few hypotheses. Same goes for cellphones, pagers, tamagochis, what have you by the way. The more recent it is the more vulnerable but if she cuts loose even an old rotary phone might not make it.

He had retrieved a few of his omnipresent legal pads from the truck and passed one and a pen to each of the others

Alright, so it seems we've all agreed to investigate the murder of Sam Wellington. Any of you hiding a past as a kid detective or something? I'm an engineer, not a detective myself.

Cori shakes her head. "Nope. When digging stuff up was necessary it was lots of time in the library and a whole lot of footwork. And paying geeks to do computer work, of course." She shrugs at Lucas. "Max is right - we have to be careful."

The fact of their mutual tendency to conflict with technology was now just a very annoying part of everyday life. Once it had been new to her as well, but it looks like whatever these kids are at least they don't have to live with it. Even with her low profile these days she's still of a mind to explore the far side of the exchange - to see just what she can really do. She may need that knowledge to do this work and still stay under the radar.

Lucas curses at the potential threat to his precious computer, and scampers over to unplug the power cord. Really, you guys can't use tech? That must really suck. He stands there for a moment, staring at the computer. He frowns, and then turns his head to ask. Is there any way you can like... turn your magic off for a bit or something? I was really hoping I could have access to google while we were brainstorming.

He walks over to his wardrobe, and heedless of the other people present, he takes off his shirt and pants. Standing only in his boxers, the skinny and quite well toned youth folded up his clothes with a reverential air. Turning back to his guests, he declined a seat at the table and instead lied on the floor. His current position would be much more comfortable for a quadruped then a person, but Lucas didn't mind.

Staring up at the table he said. Yeah. I got 'nothin. Except it seems to me that the police would have done all the actual investigating already, and they would be better then us at it to boot. If we could talk to the police chief and get access to whatever information they have, that seems like a good first step. Otherwise... well, he was killed early in the morning right? In a residential area, before people left for the day? If he was literally torn in half, somebody must have heard something. Maybe they talked to the police about it, or maybe they heard something that they didn't tell the police because they thought nobody would believe them. Lucas shrugged. That's my two cents anyways.

Max chuckled at Lucas' suggestion

Can you turn off your electromagnetic field? It's the same idea, only it's also affected by power and emotional state. I have a lot less raw power than Corinne and I don't use it the same way so if I stay calm I can refrain from blowing stuff up, but I still go through a ton of parts on my computer and I customized it to be resistant. I've thought about adding an enchantment to absorb the excess magic I give off to my amulet but I never managed to work out the math for it. Of course if I could find a wizard specializing in crafting willing to help me figure it out I'm sure it would be possible but the jerks won't talk to me because I'm not admitted in their club-house. Stupid White Council, appoint themselves my protectors and overlords without my consent and won't even help me with a few equations...

The others stared blankly as Max got lost in a tangent, something they feared would become a theme of their collaboration with him. He realized he was getting off topic and let Lucas finish his thoughts on the investigation

Not a bad thought... I'd like to get a look at the scene, ideally also the body, won't be fun but I think I'll have to use the Sight again. Which by the way I used to confirm our Aldoris is what he appeared. Sure enough he's a pretty powerful Sidhe lord from Summer, so we can trust the letter of what he told us at least. So I'd say our first stop should be the police. I know the chief, I answered some questions he had following a couple of White Court vamps spending a weekend partying with the students. Nobody was killed but the chaos they left behind had the police very confused for a while there. So I can probably get us access to the scene and whatever information he has.

We have 3 things to check out, the scene itself, the neighborhood, and the Nevernever. I suggest we split the party. Both Corrine or I could handle the crime scene, or both of us. Anna, you're pretty, young, and you look trustworthy, I think you should canvass the neighbourhood. Tell the neighbors you're just looking for an explanation of how and why your dear uncle Sam died, and the police won't tell you anything. Then Solstice is the most logical choice for the Nevernever investigation.

Thoughts?

Max wasn't an investigator but he was pretty good at project management, those reflexes were taking over at this point.

"Talking about witnesses gives me an idea. Whatever happened, there's going to be a lot of energy left over right there, and anybody who saw it will have some kind of, uh, trauma reeking of the same energy. I got an idea how to look for that but you have all the gear, Max. We can canvass the neighbors. Just need a good excuse. Besides, without us around they can keep searching the web."

Solstice truly was apprehensive of riding Max's truck. Plus there was iron strewn everywhere inside the car, held by some kind of flat straps. Eventually she did relent, with the encouragement of two acquaintances. She couldn't help thinking it was such a confined space, though. The momentum in the vehicle caught her off guard a lot too, and the world outside rushed past her. Except when it didn't and the car was stopped for some reason. Oh, she didn't like this ride one bit...

Over at the apartment, Solstice also asked to be invited inside as well, even though the threshold surrounding it was pathetically weak. By now she was wearing some gloves so at least she wouldn't accidentally touch something she didn't want to with her hands.

"A kid detective? No. I don't think my background is anything special. I am still quite young and only have received some basic tutelage imparted by my mother and some of her friends..."

She gingerly accepted a notepad and pen, looking at them awkwardly, wondering what it is she's expected to do with them.

"Well you said before that the police already investigated what they could. They most likely already questioned Mr. Wellington's neighbors and family as well. Before even searching ourselves, why don't we see what they can tell us first?"

Then she turns to Anna. "Annabelle, when you said you will not promise a Fae anything... does this mean we cannot trust each other?"

To Cori

Hummmm could work, it's been a few sunrises so most of the energy will have dissipated but at worst we can go look in the Nevernever, impressions tend to last longer there. I have a few crystals we that would work, we could set them to resonate if somebody affected by the same thing is nearby. Probably won't work through a threshold but it could still help.

Anna

Annabelle just nodded at Max's request to help her, should she need it. She was still a bit shellshocked, so to speak, from the revelation.

As everyone began gathering inside that appartment, the moment Annabelle set foot past the (most likely rather weak) Treshold, the entire place would seem to feel a bit more... homey, so to speak. Like as if her mere presence was affirming the 'I live here' notion that many types of houses normally have, if a family's been living there for 10 or 20 years.
She had muttered a little phrasing as she entered though, letting her hand gently touch the doorframe prior to entering, although it wasn't any sort of magical incantation or whatnot. just a small personalized blessing.

If Lukas' Apartment's Treshold is less than 4 (Anna's Conviction), then I'd like to use Bless This House and boost it's Power by 2 ^^.

After hearing the request for any prior experience in the detective department, Anna managed to focus her thoughts a bit, enough to be at least a bit more functional right now.
"Well, it's not like I am Detective Conan or anything like that. I'm a Bartender and that requires me to be Observant and Alert to what's happening near the bar. I've got no idea if that wouldd qualify me for anything in the area of 'Super Detective'."
"But before we go much further, shouldn't we all... you know, introduce ourselves to eachother? I only really recognize one person here, and that's Lukas, but then again i barely even know HIM, let alone the rest of you. I'm not talking a need for a whole monologue about past childhood experiences or anything like that. just a quick collection of what makes you, you and me, me." She said, hoping it didn't sound too much like a prior-cheerleader needing to give the team a peptalk or anything like that.

Annabelle turned her head right after saying that, hearing Solstice's question. "Huh? wait... do you mean to say that you're a Faerie or some such? You... really don't look like one though." She said, clearly seeming a tiny bit off-put or insecure now that she'd sort of been 'put on the spot' about her prior statement. "I... what i meant is, is that I do not want to accidentally get roped into some sort of binding contract with a Fae by accident or anything like that. I've experienced my share of... Bad Fae, so please do not try and tell me that your kind doesn't tend to try and lure people into accepting gifts or doing a deal without realizing it. Because I've lived through that nightmare." (do remember that she can't really recognize Solstice by her looks cuz of the glamour, and i didn't read at any point that the glamour was dropped)

Solstice began to respond to Anna, "You mean you don't-" Then she realized that Anna had arrived last at the park and probably didn't even hear her name.

"Yes Annabelle, I am. And in fact, we've met before. But you wouldn't recognize me now because I'm using a disguise..."

That's when Solstice dismissed her glamour. The athletic clothes melted away into an immaculate, gossamer summer dress with gold embroidery depicting leaves and flowers; her hair became its true fiery red color, slightly more wavy and more perfect; her skin lightened a few shades, and her eyes took on an emerald green color, complete with the cat-like pupils.

"Do you remember me now? I am called Solstice; I was able to convince the Earl Roosevelt to let you return home, where you belonged..."

Addressing everyone at this point, she said, "Perhaps that is why I was also asked to join you. The lot of you are either ignorant of or utterly paranoid of my kind, to say the least. And it seems some are also afraid of going to the Nevernever. But there is no need to fear; I am well-acquainted with it."

"...I am not sure what else to say about myself. I still live with my mother and.. well, unless you are interested in pixie clothes, I don't think there's any special talents you need to be aware of."

But to her, shooting a bow, throwing some magic around, and just being supernatural in general was completely normal for her, so of course none of that other stuff seemed worthy of special mention.

Annabelle went wide-eyed as she saw Solstice suddenly dropping her name out loud in her presence (not to meantion that disguise-glamour as well), finally recognizing the... 'girl' that had helped safe Her from that captivity situation. "Oh! it's.... it's you. Wow, i never really expected to see you again... yeah, thanks again for helping me out back then... but I do not remember it as being as easy as an 'easy convince' though." She said, a bit lost for words right now.

"I'm not Paranoid though, I just haven't had the best of experiences with the sidhe after all. From what I've head, Pixies are much less, well, aggressive like that. At least from what I've heard and seen." She continued on and then fell silent again, her eyes glued to Solstice, a sort of... familiarity feeling made Her unable to look anywhere else right now.

Solstice merely shrugged, eyes engaged with Anna as well for the time being. "Well when one believes every single Fae they meet is plotting to entrap them, that is the very definition of paranoia, is it not? I completely understand how you feel because all it takes is one out of a dozen, but still... If you don't promise us anything, it's very unlikely you will ever get us to. You only need to take care with your words. Saying a silly .. idiom like 'You would die for something' is asking for trouble."

She quips, "I think the fact that idiom and idiot start the same is significant."

Biting the tip of her tongue, Cori looks from Solstice to Anna, her skin crawling a little. Great. She needs time to process this - she likes problems she can see directly and confront with single-minded determination, and there are just too many variables right now. There's a killer out there, and that is something she can focus on.

When Anna asks for introductions, she almost rebukes her. But no, patience is needed because she doesn't know what the dangers are yet. Of course, she doesn't know all the dangers right here in this room, but one thing at a time. "My name is Corinne," she says steadily, and considers what else might actually be relevant. "I'm no detective, but I have experience protecting innocent people from predators. I don't know why that guy brought us all together, but at least for now more eyes looking for danger is better since we have no idea what we're looking for. So Lucas, much as I appreciate your allowing us all into your place, but for all our protection maybe we should find a public place with lost of exit to meet? We shouldn't attract attention to where we live, right?"

To Max, she says quietly, walking out the door as soon as everybody's on more or less the same page, "I think I got an idea about finding any witnesses who know they're witnesses. Maybe we'll get lucky and find something else, but at least we can try. You got any candles or anything to burn?"

Max didn’t react much when Solstice dismissed her glamour. After all he had shared a soulgaze with her a few years back so he knew what she was probably better than she did herself. He mostly ignored the interplay between Anna and Solstice to have a whispered conversation with Corinne.

Probably chose us because we have the right mix of skills and predictability, we all have fairly obvious levers. Also I think it’s best to assume the opposition knows about us already… at least you and me, probably Solstice too. Anyone planning to move in as supernatural top dog would do some research, and we stand out.

To the candle comment

Yeah, I have chalk and a half-dozen candles here, but I have a lot more high-quality stuff in my lab you’d be welcome to use, I’m intrigued by your idea. Besides I was going to ask you anyway, there’s some research I’d like to do before even going on site and I could use your help if I end up needing to call spirits or something like that. Lucas closed his eyes and laid back on the floor while Max explained his plan. One problem with your plan... So what about me?

Even someone as thick-skinned as Lucas wasn't oblivious to the change in the atmosphere of the room when Annabelle entered. The air seemed to lighten, and it just felt a lot more like a Home. That was a new experience for Lucas, as he had spent his whole life either on his own or in the foster care system. He lifted his head off the floor, and there was a certain amount of awe in his face.

In response to Anna's request for people to talk about themselves, Lucas slowly speaks up. He didn't really feel like sharing much, not because he wanted to maintain his privacy, but more because he didn't find it too noteworthy. I'm Lucas. he said, neglecting his last name because he didn't feel like it was a part of his identity. I never knew who my parents were, but I met a Warden who told me she thought I was a Half-Dragon. He shrugged. That was my introduction to the scene. I've been keeping my head down, looking after me and mine. I'm gainfully employed at McDonalds, and my long term plan is to abuse the sh*t out of the time-value of money.

As he listened to Anna and Solstice's exchange, he became agitated. The thought of someone hurting Anna really got under his skin. When their exchange was finished, he looked over to Solstice and said. I get that your upset, and please don't take this personally. I don't know much about Fae, and the one thing that the Warden emphasized when talking to me was that I should have as little to do with them as possible. He voiced the next part in the most diplomatic tone that he could muster, which was quite different then his earlier brash behavior with Aldoris. What exactly is that the Faeries that interact with Humanity want?

Lucas gave an annoyed glance to Corrine. He wasn't impressed that she had complained about the status quo without having a better alternative in mind. I honestly don't care about where we meet. You're welcome to keep showing up here if you want. If the murderer figures out we have been meeting here and goes after me, then good. It'll save us the trouble of trying to track them down.

No one was probably going to be happy being around her, no matter what she did.

"I would prefer not to walk into an ambush and be torn in half like Mr. Wellington. Perhaps... uh, Max?" She asked. The one-syllable name seemed awkward to her. "Are you leaving already? The neighborhood where Samuel Wellington lived is a quiet little suburb. The people there are frightened by recent events, and need a little coaxing to talk.

This is basically a social conflict, only with a bunch of people, though you'll only roll once to gauge your general success. Give me a Rapport roll, please.

Max and Corrine
The police chief gives Max his blessing to investigate the actual crime scene based on their personal history, and also shares some information with him. Samuel's wife and kids were home at the time of the murder, though they didn't hear the actual incident. The son does report having heard his sister's voice outside the house, though, while the sister remains insistent that she had been asleep the whole night. The son also seems to insist that something was off with his father-- he'd been eating more than usual, and had taken up stamp collecting seemingly out of nowhere, spending an unusual amount of money to obtain the stamps. The wife corroborates this story. Additionally, the medical examiner makes note of something peculiar about Mr. Wellington's corpse-- there are bite marks matching human teeth along certain parts.

The actual house has been cordoned off with police tape such that Max and Corrine have to duck under it in order to access it. The bloodstains are still there, splattered across the front walk, presumably in case the police department decides to observe them again. The note has been removed, though, also presumably collected for evidence.

An Investigation roll from you both is required here.

Solstice and Lucas
The Nevernever around the Wellington home has clearly been scarred. A chilly white fog has settled in around the area, clumped where the outline of Samuel Wellington's body lays lined in chalk. There are deep claw marks in the ground, which is covered, in all things, in a light dusting of snow. The chill of winter lies heavily in the air, though as Solstice knows, this should be Summer territory. Whatever visited here has left its mark on the metaphysical landscape.

A Lore roll from the both of you, please.

Lucas knelt down in the snow. He was only wearing his boxer shorts. One of the crappy things about being a shapeshifter is that you tended to go through a lot of clothes. He had has other possessions in an over-sized messenger style bag, and its nylon strap was currently slung over his shoulder. He looked at the marks in the snow with a deadpan expression, before he glanced up at his travelling companion. Well, I got nothing.

Solstice resumed her human disguise up until the point they entered the Nevernever discreetly. Here, she also surveyed the area, cautiously observing the mirrored, spirit version of the home. The snow and chill was quite tell-tale of Winter, but the claw marks were what really gave it away. She knelt down along with Lukas to get a closer look.

"These... look like the marks of a wendigo. And the snow, the air... I am almost positive. But... this still doesn't make sense. It shouldn't be here. Especially not in Summer territory and in this time of year. More importantly, they don't know how to write..."

A 'What?' Lucas said blankly, turning to stare at the smaller girl. Would you mind sharing what you know with the rest of the class? Solstice gave the half-naked guy a look. Why did he insist on dressing this away again?

"I just said they don't know how to write. That would mean these markings are not any form of language, higher communication, or otherwise. They simply are the sign of a dangerous, savage being likely whipped into a frenzy. A wendigo is first and foremost a spirit of greed. And hunger. They feed on the greed of humans, and of course their flesh as well..."

Solstice remembered one of those errands she had run before. Simply to deliver a message to one of the winter courts. Of course she was given safe passage, but along the way she ran into a wendigo, commanded by a Winter Lady. The beast was so hungry and wanted to eat her; it was terrifying. The claw marks it made on the ground in frustration at that time seemed so similar to these as well... overall, it made Solstice quite uneasy.

"I could tell you and the others more later. But for now, I don't know if we are very safe here..."

As Solstice stated that she believed they were in danger, that was the last straw as far as Lucas was concerned. She knew far more about what was going here then he did, and this was something that was enough to make her nervous. He hadn't perceived any distinct threat, but there were a whole bunch of little details about the Nevernever that had put him on edge. It was the cognitive dissonance that the place inspired in him, and all of the tiny ways that things didn't work the way that he expected. Lucas felt like he was in a place inspired by a Lewis Carroll novel, except now Lucas wondered if it wasn't the other way around.

Lucas's face tensed up, and he pulled down his boxer shorts. He fell down forwards, onto all fours, and suddenly he began to change. All across his body, his skin rippled, and scales began to emerge. He grew to about the size of a horse, and his face narrowed into the profile of a snout. With a large whoosh sound, a large pair of bat like wings erupted from his back. They tested themselves by beating the air and stirring up the snow.

Standing in front of the ivory skinned, red haired Fae was a green skinned dragon. It's straight antler-like horns protruded from the back of the skull. It stretched itself out, showing the full length of its serpentine profile. It stared down at the suddenly much smaller girl and spoke, showing far too much teeth for a normal person to feel comfortable. "I think I know where I'd like to go," Solstice said.

Navigating the Nevernever was never easy, though Solstice had a lot more experience than most. Eventually by guiding Lukas-in-dragon-form through various concepts, she found herself in familiar territory and headed home, if only briefly. There, she would at least let her mother know what they've been doing, garner any possible advice, if any, and then they could make their way back to Indianola through that way she went through earlier. Hopefully the hidden adversary had not caught wind of them yet...

It's also sort of compelling an aspect to make sure she checks in with her mother, though I can't really see any real problems it poses, so no fate points for me I guess.

He awkwardly fumbled with the messenger bag, ensuring that his boxer shorts got inside. It took a few moments, his claws were not intended for manipulating small objects. Once that was finished, he pushed his head through the bag's strap and let it rest around his serpentine neck. It was an awkward arrangement, but it was the best one that he had found for making sure that he didn't leave his stuff behind when he got the chance.

He knelt down as Solstice clambered on his back. His quadruped legs weren't able to reach around to assist her, the joints simply didn't allow for that range of motion. He listened attentively as she gave the directions. Lucas wasn't sure why someone of her apparent age (even Lucas knew appearances could be deceiving when it came to the Fae) was so eager to visit her mother, but that was her business.

He felt a warm feeling of elation fill his heart as he took to the air. This was true Freedom. His flights were always limited, out of fear that some rando with a cellphone would catch sight of him. Here, he didn't have to worry about hiding from anyone. As the realization that he didn't have to be discovered emerged, a question came to Lucas's mind.

Just how fast could he go?

Hang on!

Lucas only gave a brief warning before he accelerated forward with a loud yeee-haw! of boyish delight.

Anna

Annabelle walked through the streets, calmly going from home to home in the neighborhood Samuel Wellington lived in. She met each who answered the door with a gentle smile and a small peptalk in how to stay strong and keep their neighborhood safe by keeping an open eye, etc. etc.
She kept it factual, clean and supportive, hopefully managing to at least a little supportive calming to the people of that Neighborhood.

Unfortunately, despite careful investigation of the scene, no further evidence can be discovered.

Lucas and Solstice
Lucas flies forward at a brisk pace, perhaps not as fast as he may have liked, but certainly fast enough to get where they needed to go in good time. They soon arrive at the place Solstice had grown up in and had come to call "home." Her mother steps outside, frowning and looking a little confused. "Solstice? What are you doing here? And who have you brought with you?" she asks, tilting her head in curiosity.

Anna
Anna's effect clearly influences the people of the neighborhood. They seem a little more at ease once she's talked to them, their fears not entirely laid to rest, but certainly quieted.

Solstice was disappointed that her mother did not seem happy at all to see her. But she still tried to keep a calm, if not slightly lighthearted disposition.

"Hello, mother. I came to tell you about the meeting regarding that mysterious note. Well, it was more than a meeting. A powerful lord who calls himself Aldoris requested that a murder be investigated..." She went into more detail about how she and 4 others, including Lukas the dragon, were tasked with discovering the killer of Samuel Wellington, who at the very least was an ally of our allies. Oh, and the wendigo. So this job was very likely to be time-consuming and quite dangerous.

"We came this way because I didn't feel safe near his home anymore. And I thought you should know about this. It does not please you when I neglect to tell you important things like this..." Solstice eyed her mother trying to garner some form of understanding, at least such that she would stop frowning.

Lukas shifted his weight slightly as Solstice talked to her mother. It wasn't enough to knock her off, but it was enough to get the message across that the ride was over. Still, Lucas wasn't keen to switch forms anytime soon. Being around the Fae made him feel uncomfortable.

Begging your pardon Ma'am. Lucas said politely. Unlike with Aldoris, he was imposing on her, not the other way around, so he was a lot more conciliatory with his mannerisms. He wasn't quite sure why Solstice had come here, wasn't there objective to find out information about the murder? He never had a family member that he was close to, so it was hard for him to parse the dynamic that he was witnessing. If you have information about these events, what would you want in return for gifting us said information? He phrased his words carefully, attempting to avoid implicating himself in an open ended promise.

Lucas and Solstice

"Aldoris... Aldoris...," Solstice's mother murmurs, looking off to the side and rubbing her chin thoughtfully. "Where have I heard that name before?" she asks herself, murmuring softly. She seems to remember that she has guests, however-- or rather, her daughter is present with a guest. She turns back to the two, smiling gently. "Well, you had best come inside you two. I will answer my daughter's questions, as it is my duty, and should you just happen to overhear what I say... well, eavesdropping doesn't require payment, does it?" she says, smiling at Lucas.

Cori and Max

Cori Sees the same scene that Lucas and Solstice saw, only much worse. The blood-stains are still fresh, and the snow much heavier. Additionally, the corpse of presumably Samuel Wellington lies where it fell in life, torn in half and having appeared to have been savaged by... something. His countenance, however, is no longer human. His face is skull-like, his eyes sunken deep into their sockets. His lips are tattered and bloody, and his whole body is gaunt, as if his skeleton had been simply wrapped in skin. The house has fallen into abandon, the window shutters hanging off their panes, and the roof having sunken in under the weight of the snow piled atop it. The whole scene is unbearably grim, but Cori has braced herself enough that she passes most of it by, though it doesn't leave her unaffected.

Once that he had been dealt with, Lucas reverted back to human form and put on his boxer shorts. Another Lore roll: [roll0]+4

This roll is regarding the question Solstice just asked her mother.

Solstice hid a frown and turned her gaze to the home, walking inside it, and waiting near the door. She waited for her guest to come inside, and hoped he'd put on more than his undergarments.

When the group got settled in she said, "I don't believe I have many questions to ask of you, mother. After all, the task was given to me and some others. But there is one thing which greatly bothers me, and that is the wendigo. If we were to encounter it, how.." Ah, wording was everything... "What should we do?"

"Hm... well, you shouldn't worry about defending yourself. While Wendigos are spirits associated with Winter, they are not under control of the Winter Court. They are not Fae, after all," she says, taking a seat at the table once they've walked inside. "Fire will be your greatest ally against it. It is the only weapon that can truly pierce its defenses."

Lucas claimed a seat at the table for himself. He was oblivious to Solstice's stare, having little to worry about from temperature variations. He sat down and placed his hands on the table as he listened to the conversation between the two fae. So.. we know the murderer was a Wendigo. I guess if we figure out which specific Wendigo did it, then that's all we need to deliver to Aldoris? Solstice, you mentioned earlier that they don't have any concept of written writing. Do they have any understanding of language? And its not fire that can hurt it right? If we smack it hard enough, that'll do the trick too, right? Lukas didn't seem terribly concerned about the prospect of engaging a cannibal murder spirit in hand-to-hand combat.

WindStruck

"I don't think so," Solstice said. "I believe most wouldn't know how to write at all. Which is what worries me. I suspect someone was directing the wendigo somehow, if not outright controlling one. And given the content of the message, that someone is who our investigation will uncover, and that someone will not want to be exposed. That is my fear. Once they realize we are investigating this murder, they might just send the wendigo after us too."

She gave Lucas a look again. "I wouldn't know if there's another way to defeat a wendigo. Perhaps your brute strength could slow it down? Or temporarily incapacitate one? I truly don't know, and I'd rather not have to find out..."

The lore roll was just to see what Solstice knew, btw. Just in case you were confused, I wasn't trying to say the lore roll would define what Amora said... unless this is all just a coincidence. :smalltongue:

"Oh, I'm sure Aldoris knows it was a wendigo if you could figure it out," she says simply, "but that doesn't answer the question of who killed him if the wendigo was used as a weapon, which I suspect is what he suspects. As such, the wendigo being sent after you is a real danger.

"And while brute strength can hurt it, fire is the only way to permanently damage it or kill it."

Solstice definitely knows that fire is the best way to deal with a wendigo, but also that true selflessness can shield one from its senses for a brief period of time.

As Solstice expressed her doubts about her involvement in the investigation, Lucas's face softened. Hey. He said softly. If you want out, just say so. Nobody is going to hold it against you. This isn't your fight. If you want to get involved it has to because you want to do it He turned his head to glance at Solstice's Mother. not because anyone else wants you to do it. He shrugged. Ouch, that can't have been fun for you... I've found that desensitizing yourself is the best way to deal with that sort of thing. Just sit in a room for an hour every day and hammer yourself with it. Scotch helps with the aftermath. Now I can almost think of a few horrible things without twitching

The very mention of it still brought some horrible scene or another to mind and his left eye twitched a bit as his heart rate shot up. He chuckled ruefully

Well, not completely. Anyway... It almost sounds like the poor guy had everything tortured out of him before he dies. Either something can have that kind of effect quickly or someone took their time with him, which doesn't quite fit with what we know. And it can't be healthy for the widow and her kids to live in that house, we should try to convince them to spend a week in a hotel or something, maybe we could convince Aldoris that taking care of Wellington's dependents is his boss' responsibility and they could purify the aura around here somehow... So...

"What you do is up to you, my child. You must weigh the potential costs against the potential benefits and decide from there. I believe this would be a good practice, for certain, as I will not always be there to guide you when you need me."

She turns to Lucas. "Well, should you manage to dissolve it into a 'bubbling pile of flesh,' I imagine that would do the trick. But it will be much more difficult to do so than a mortal."

Max and Cori
Anna rejoins the two of you and reports back on her mission, having successfully soothed the neighbors a little bit. Max pretty quickly realizes they're dealing with a wendigo, and that it had somewhat infected Samuel Wellington before he died, but couldn't entirely turn him-- perhaps the reason it decided to eat him. But as he also knows, it doesn't explain the note, which suggests the presence of a second party at the scene. He is also correct about it being unsafe for the Wellingtons to stay there-- it's fairly clear the house's threshold has been mangled, and that the entire area is almost diseased. Unfortunately, such a disease cannot be cured by Aldoris or his compatriots.

Max

At first Max was drawing a blank after Cori’s description. After all a Wendigo in Iowa was one of the last things he would have expected. But as he wrote things down the conclusion became more and more inescapable. He had recently researched Wendigo after playing a game featuring them and had wanted to know everything he could find out about the myths and the real creatures, and so his knowledge was fairly comprehensive even for a relatively obscure creature. When Anna rejoined the duo she noticed that the two of them were looking a bit worse for wear, Cori because of the psychic trauma she had inflicted on herself, and him because he was realizing that he very much did not want to find out who or what could hold a wendigo on a leash, let alone face them.

Anna reported that the neighbors had not heard anything useful but that they seemed affected by the death, as could be expected, Max straightened himself, both physically and mentally. He shared the information in a low, serious tone, more like how he had spoken to Aldoris than his usual conversational manner.

From the description Corinne gave me of the scene using the Sight I think it’s overwhelmingly likely that Wellington was killed by a wendigo. According to Algonquin myths the first wendigo were humans who decided to hunt other humans for food when starving in winter, and became creatures or spirits of greed and cold, a powerful and infectious evil that feeds on human greed and human flesh. Like most myths, they are unfortunately real, and fit those characteristics. I’ve never seen one but they’re ususally described as tall, corpse-like, with blood-stained mouths and long claws. And they’re pretty much immune to physical force, because of course they are. Use fire, which shouldn’t be a problem for you Corinne.

It sounds like it had been tormenting him for a while since the impression he left behind showed signs of such infection, why he was killed instead of converted I couldn’t say, and the house’s threshold is beyond screwed up, as is the Nevernever corresponding to this area according to Aldoris. We have to convince the family to stay away from this place and find a way to fix it… or burn it to the ground, anyone who lives here or in the vicinity would be affected by it, I hope not to the extent of being…. turned but still affected. I might be able to rustle up a ritual the First Nations shaman used to use but that’s not immediately important, first we need to figure a lot if thigns out, there'll be time for research and ritual magic after... I hope.

And that’s not even the bad news, we knew something nasty was involved but wendigo can’t write and they don’t range this far south, or tend to come out in summer even where they are present. So we’re dealing with someone or something who can command or force the loyalty of a being quite literally defined by selfishness, and force it to act against its nature and just kill Wellington without eating him after it had been around long enough to psychically mangle both him and his house almost out of recognition.

He started walking away from the two younf women in order to give his phone a chance of working and turned back

I was going to call the chief to ask whee we can find the family but.... and I very dearly hope that’s not the case but it’s possible that the family is being converted, and may be too far gone. Especially if they're in a hotel room or another place without a threshold to speak of. Be ready for that.

This time he waited for their reaction before heading off.

((if we want to reunite before going forward, this would be a good place to have Lucas and Solstice rejoin the group I think))

Solstice nodded slowly. So her dear mother was going to let her decide all by herself. What were the risks? Well aside from failure and embarrassment, working against an unknown person or group, and being ripped to shreds by a wendigo, she imagined one of those odd mortals she briefly met could very well turn on her too.

But how likely was this? Utmost caution should greatly eliminate the risk... or perhaps, as long as she was willing to back out at some point, it might not have to come to violence. For her, anyway. The other people probably wouldn't do anything to harm her (purposely, she added, thinking of Lukas breaking the bench) as long as she didn't threaten them in any way...

And what were the rewards? Well that was frustratingly vague. Some unknown person or persons would grant her (and four others) a boon for completing this task, but what exactly? The idea of favor in the summer court was nice, but.. favor to what extent? She hoped that if 'the balance was at stake' it would at least be something worthwhile.

The young Fae's eyes moved to different objects and locations in the room trying to decide. There were more benefits too, weren't there? Perhaps once all this was over, those who she simply referred to as those 'odd mortals' could be valuable contacts? Or she could not proceed. And what awaited her then? More lessons? More errands? And everything that entailed. She sighed softly. The choice was almost unbearable.

"I will join them once more..." Solstice said finally. "I don't know if I can discover this murderer, but if the situation becomes too dangerous, I won't go further. In any case, Lukas here might need some direction finding his way back," she said, gesturing at him.

"Speaking of which," she said to the young man, "Would you like to go now? It would not be in my place to rush you out so suddenly."

Anna

The bar that Annabelle was a cozy open sort of place. It wasn't a disco-nightclub or anything like that. It was much closer to what some would call a tavern; you could even order a minor selection of food items, mostly fried stuff and easy-made things like onion rings, french fries and 3-topping sandwiches. The drinks were wide in selection, yet each had a little denotation at where it was from, and if it was a customer-designed one that's gotten popular enough to become an official drink there, etc. etc.

It insides of the bar was, besides cozy and open, dim in lighting to allow for a nice eye-comforting lighting level, as well as a few arcade machines that saw a light but stable use, a wooden wellpolished bardesk and a variety of tables, chairs and barstools for those that wanted to sit at the bar itself. Smoking was not allowed, except for 2 designated 'smoker booths' that was sealed with a closed door and got a suction ventilation system that vented out the smoke outside the building.

Annablle herself had finished her talk with the neighborhood, and having not real idea what to do after that, or where to go, she decided to be responsible and meet up a bit earlier than usual for a job, which gave her enough time to both change into her service-outfit (which was a comfortable-sized skirt designed for attraction while remaining professional, as well as a woman's shirt with a nametag on the left side of the chest-area). She'd also managed to wash off some of the glasses that the prior bartender had just left, which left the bar and it's desk neat and clean by the time the Others arrived, a bit to Annabelle's surprise at the speed of their planned arrival.
At the moment the bar is relatively quiet and sparse with guests, which wasn't too uncommon from time to time.

Seeing as she was on duty, she couldn't really join the others at the table, so instead she lingered whenever able just to catch up on conversation and such. She also brought the drinks that had been requested... and yes, she was keeping tabs of who got what and how much. She was still the bartender and wasn't about to just give free drinks to still-relatively newly acquainted strangers.
Arriving back at the table to hear the mention 'Wendigo', she just had to ask: "What the heck is a Wendigo? I've seen a TV series once, i think, saying something about them being... spirits... or cannibalistic humans mutated by... something. it sounded rather silly to be back then so i really didn't pay much attention anyways... so um, an explanation would be great." she said in a hushed tone, placing the rather odd order of a glass of water in front of Lukas... Stingy bastard. The drinks weren't THAT expensive compared to most other places, Annabelle thought to herself with a mental sigh.

Solstice, back in her disguise, didn't order anything, and she hadn't said much as of yet. She sighed, having to explain a wendigo again. Hopefully for the last time.

"Something like that. Wendigos are powerful and ancient spirits of greed and hunger. They feed upon those feelings as well as human flesh. Their voice can mimic anyone's: a common trick they use to lure prey. They also can inflict a curse on humans, which eventually turns them into one."

Trying to address Lukas's concerns next, she said, "I believe it may be possible for Mr. Duhamel to perform a ritual which could lead us to it. We could also look out for signs of other people who have been infected with the wendigo curse. If such people exist, the wendigo may still be lurking. And where the wendigo is, those who direct it should be near."

"Influencing a wendigo directly is in itself quite an amazing feat. To think that it's going to get directions first..." Solstice shook her head disapprovingly.

"It would have to get those instructions in a verbal way or perhaps one that was extremely easy to understand. But how would you even designate a crazed, savage killer a target in advance without seeing it first? One way or the other, when we find the wendigo, we will either find the one controlling it or then follow it to its 'meeting spot' and then find them."

Max was not a regular patron of the bar, and as such spent 5 minutes fussing with the drinks menu before settling on a decent IPA.

Corinne, you must have gotten a good feel for the taint of the wendigo's presence back there, so you should be able to figure out where it's been in town lately, the Charmed thing with the map and the crystal actually works if you've never tried it before. And if it spends time in the Nevernever the local spirits will have noticed, Solstice can talk to the minor fae and I can summon a few local spirits too. Then if we find out where it's been recently we can go there and see if the puppet master left any clues. We should do our best to avoid physical confrontation with it, after all our job is to find out who killed Wellington, not avenge him, and slugging it out with the murder weapon won't help. Though we should prepare for a confrontation. Making poor man's napalm is fairly easy but it's hard to transport... Maybe we could get a few of those big water guns and fill them with gasoline. If I had a week I could rework my rings to shoot fire but I don't. I might be able to make a potion to help fight off the things curse if it gets one of us

In response to Solstice and Corrines' conversation, Lucas decided to interject. As part of his job, he needed to figure out how to get different people to work together, so this wasn't completely unfamiliar terrain for him. Regardless, finding the wendigo is the first step. He said, trying to draw attention to something everyone could agree on. Once we figure out what evidence is there, or if we can beat some answers out of it, then we can figure out what to do next.

When Max brought up the idea of creating an improvised flamethrower, Lucas fiddled with his phone. He put it down and played a youtube clip for everyone at the table

The Range seems crappy. Lucas observed. If you want to use something like that, go ahead. I was thinking molotov cocktails personally. Now, this curse keeps getting mentioned. How exactly does it work? How do people get infected? How much time does it take someone to convert them into another Wendigo?

Lucas stiffened when Max mentioned his desire to not fight the Wendigo. If its still in town, and its going after people, I'm putting it down. He growled.

Maybe it must touch a victim or simply be in proximity for a long enough period of time. The victim then starts getting urges to become greedy and they desire human flesh more and more. I think how long it takes depends on when they take their first bite of other humans."

Coromme simply nods at Max's tracking suggestion. "Yeah, I've done it, though not a whole lot. The guy I was dealing with made half his meetings public knowledge." She shrugs. And then her stomach lurches at Solstice's description and the too-clear memory of what these creatures do.

Returning to the table to replace snacks and wipe the table a bit, mostly just so she had a need to stick around. "Well, I've never fired a weapon before, let a lone even a paintball gun or airsoft gun... As I said at the 'grand meting', I'm a talker, not a fighter." She said, clearly indicating she'd just be in the way, rather than an actual unwillingness to help out or anything like that.
She then headed back off to her bar desk in case anyone needed to order a drink. Being easily visible and such.

Anna sighed a bit, went to talk with her boss for a sec before returning to the table and took a seat. Clearly she was taking her break.
"Well, Aldoris is not an allknowing being, or at least i do not think he is. is he? well anyways, I am not fitted for fighting... like at all. I can deal with people well, im athletic and got a healthy physique, but i have no sort of training for self defense, paramilitary or some sort of martial arts. Sagging back into her seat and slowly twisting one of several bracelets on her left wrist, Corinne watches the little screen from across the table and frowns at Anna's continued apologies. "Hey, let's not get all crazy, huh? Violence isn't an easy thing to get used to, and we're not gonna ask you to throw yourself into danger with explosives on your back," she looks around, especially at Lucas, "Or at least I won't. But these things sound really, really dangerous, and they're apparently spreading, so we can use another pair of eyes, anyway. I mean when we actually find it."

She finishes her drink. "So are we gonna do this? Let's get the map and stuff and game on."

"Talking is good for getting one into trouble or out of it," Solstice said. "But you also have a gift. When our eyes met, Annabelle..." She distinctly had an urge to not look her in the face, recollecting that moment.

"I... saw some things about myself that I didn't like. I believe you have the ability to help others be better people. And perhaps it may be a wild and delusional thought, but maybe you could even help those affected by a wendigo's curse break free from it."

Nodding to Corrine, she added, "So you and Max will work on a ritual involving a map to attempt tracking the wendigo here, yes? Might I be able to offer some assistance before you get started? And while you are doing that, I assume you would like me to contact some wee folk or the like?"

Max filed away the thing about Anna's ability for now and concentrated on the immediate plan.

Well, I have everything at my place, as well as a lot of answers for Anna so I suggest we take this party there. Though I would like to speak to the widow, she might have information and/or be in danger. I'll go call the chief for her number.

He did just that. Assuming he got it he called her and opened with:

Mrs Wellington? I'm Max, first of all I'd like to offer my condolences, I only met your husband one or two times even though we ran in the same kinds of circle but he seemed like a decent man. Myself and some associates are investigating his death and we would like to talk to you and your children, you might be in danger and even if you're not I'm sure there are things you didn't, couldn't tell the police that would help us find out what happened to Samuel and maybe avenge him.

If he gets an answering machine he will just leavr his number

Lucas grinned as he saw Solstice's fascination with the phone. It was like watching a moth get close to a porch-light. Then it sounds like claw-to-claw is still an option. Lucas said calmly. He didn't seem perturbed about the idea of fighting the beast.

He sat quietly while Anna discussed his role in the group. He thought of a joke he could make, but it died before he let it out. She seemed to be a bit down about the whole business. When Corrine spoke up, Lucas noted the way her gaze lingered on him. Nobody is asking anybody to do something they don't want to do.

He sighed internally. He had been putting this off since last night, and he doubted the experience would be pleasant. He stood up. I'm going to grab some supplies. Corrine, would you mind coming along? I could use an extra pair of hands. It was a thinly veiled excuse for the two of them to have the chance to talk in private. We can meet up at Max's place once we got everything.

So just to be clear, I'm proposing that we have a Corrine/Lucas scene in parallel with the main plot thread at Max's place, just to avoid slowing things done.

So, for the sake of continuity, I propose that we run the two scenes in parallel. The Corrine/Lucas scene is a flashback

Bar

After being texted by Anna, Corrine and Lucas returned. What's up?

Corrine/Lucas

That's it? Lucas said in surprise. I thought you were upset about my sense of ethics, after the issues with the Fae last night. He walked alongside Corrine, considering his words carefully. You seem to be unsure about what I exactly I want out of this. I want this Wendigo destroyed. It has killed someone in this community, and given from what I heard, it seems very likely that it will do so again, if it is left to its own devices. This doesn't sound like something that can be negotiated or reasoned with. If Max and Solstices' speculation is correct and some other party is behind these attacks, then I will figure out what I want once I know what I am up against. Until that point in time, everything else is speculation.

Like I said anyone who wants out can walk away. This is dangerous business. If you think anyone isn't suited for this, now would be the best time to try to talk them out of it. As for me endangering the others, I will never ask someone to do anything that I am not willing to do myself. None of you owe anything to me. If I get involved in something, its not your problem.

He stopped to stare at the girl.

I don't use people. That's not how I do business. That's probably not very reassuring, but considering how little we know each other, that is the best I can offer. If its any consolation, I will never, ever bullsh!t you. You will always know were you stand with me.

You know why? Because at the end of the day, I honestly don't give a sh!t about what you think of me. So I won't ever care enough to try to manipulate you.

They arrived at his immediate goal, a nearby liquor store.

Eh merde….

Max muttered under his breath as he searched for words… He looked Mrs Wellington in the eyes just enough to not initiate a soulgaze before continuing.

Corissa, I’m going to offer you a choice. Your husband was involved in weird and dangerous things and died because of them. I have to assume he kept them from you for your own good, and I don’t blame him for it. Just knowing about those things makes you a player, and being a player can be dangerous. You’re in a rough state right now, so if you want we can skirt around the issue. You’ll have a lot of unanswered questions but you’ll be able to concentrate on your family, and if and when you’re ready you can call me back and we’ll go over everything. That’s option one, and I would suggest it. Option 2 is that we tell you here and now. You won’t believe us at first and it will put into question a lot of what you believe.

After having consulted the others for some feedback on her disguise, Solstice had made some adjustments to stand out just a bit less. Now in the starbucks, listening to the conversation, it seemed now Max was offering her that big choice. The transition between when mortals merely do ignorant things and when they do utterly stupid things. Solstice guessed the lady was most likely incapable of making an informed decision.

That and the mention of the Court of Roses? So is that who Aldoris was working for? How interesting...

She addressed Max first, canting her head and still keeping Corissa in view. "Perhaps, given the warning written in blood at the murder scene, it might be more dangerous for her to remain ignorant. But if safety is the highest priority, moving away and forgetting all this would be the most effective option."

Turning her gaze to the lady, even making brief eye contact for an instant, Solstice said, "If you would like to help us and maybe put a stop to whatever killed your husband, you don't need to know all the details. But if you feel you need that knowledge for some sense of closure... it's your choice."

Alright, so it wasn't going after him at home until something forced it's hand, and that point Sam was probably too far gone and that had deteriorated the threshold enough for the wendigo to get in. Months? Christ...

Max tried to hide his anger as he went over the new information. In the supernatural world it was a lord's duty to protect their vassals, and Wellington had been spectacularly failed by the Court of Roses, if that was indeed the identity of their mysterious employer.

Good question... Try to think back at the time it started happening, can you remember him mentioning a new workplace, new colleagues, new habits? And what did he actually do for a living?

Cori tried - probably unsuccessfully - to hide her horror at the thought of a grown man collecting stamps ... but when she saw the same questions on Max's face she realized it maybe wasn't a coincidence. At the earliest convenience in the conversation, almost certainly interrupting, she leans forward and waggles her fingers to get Corissa's attention. "Yeah, hey, I'm Corinne. I have an uncle who collects stamps [she lied] and he said some of those rare ones can fetch a pretty penny. Maybe your husband was putting money away someplace nobody would find. Don't suppose you'd mind if we take a look at'em?"

More specifically, they bear historically important images and come in contact with people from pretty much everywhere, and usually letters - if somebody takes the time to write one nowadays - bear an indelible emotional charge. Or maybe there's some other significance. Either way, stamps are a weird and specific thing for somebody to start obsessing over.

Right, I think that's all the questions I had. The stamp thing might be nothing else than a weird symptom or it might be significant, too soon to tell so I will definitely check it out. I have a few suggestions that won't make sense but please trust me. Since you're apparently fine I don't think you or your kids are targets but just in case... The hotel is not safe, the best thing would be to stay with family or friends and not leave the house after sundown. If you can't then find an active church nearby, the bigger and older the better and be ready to go there if you feel threatened, then call one of us, we'll leave you a few numbers. If you can't join us call the police chief and if you don't hear from us for more than a few days call the lady at this number, tell her that I left a note explaining the situation on my kitchen table and that you might need protection.

He ripped a page from his pad and wrote down his number then, lower on the page, wrote Last resort, N. Carpathia with the local warden's number. The warden wouldn't have too much trouble slicing through his wards with her sword and if it came to that he wanted her to be informed. Finally he handed the page to Corinne and Lucas for them to write their numbers and, just to be on the safe side, opened up the Sight to look at Corissa.

The house is still cordoned off with police tape. The key unlocks the door easily, and you enter without any issues. The protective threshold at the doorway has been torn to shreds, but that was known when Corrine looked at the house with her Sight.

You find the stamps in a drawer within the master bedroom. All of you except for Solstice can immediately feel a strange effect over all of you when viewing the stamps. A strong desire to collect more twinges in the back of your mind, as well as a desire to protect the stamps before you.

Huh. Maybe there's something to stamp collecting after all. They're ... no. No they're still stupid. "Ew," Corrine says. "Y'all feel that? Gimme a sec, huh? That's just too unpleasant to keep around." She makes a sour face and waves her fingers over the book, searching for the exact texture of the tingle.

When she gets it, she draws out her wand and pulls off one of her bracelets - a metal one - and focuses on her memory of buying it (at a huge discount, as was always the case in her more carefree days). She thinks about all the times she can remember wearing it, how she slides it up and down her forearm to keep a boy's eyes busy and away form her other assets. She pours those feelings of fondness into the bracelet, which has served her well but still just another thing she can sacrifice, and attunes the vibration of the metal as best she can to the equal and opposite of that coming off the stamp book. She taps the bracelet with the want and reaches out, placing the bracelet atop the collection.

The idea is to zero out or at least dampen the effect.

Not sure what you want me to roll and I admit I forgot how my wand works. :p Have to go back and look that up. It's a focus item.

"What is it? What are you doing??" Solstice questioned. She didn't notice anything in particular special about the stamps straight away. Perhaps what little left of her human self was totally unaffected. After all how could you transform a human into a wendigo when they had already been turned into a fae?

Still, she really wondered what Corrine was doing. If this was some kind of evidence, invoking some magic and ruining it would probably destroy the only lead they had at the moment.

Most of the stamps were tossed in the back of Max's truck as they piled in around Corinne who was maintaining her spell on the offending item. Max drove slowly, keeping the fingers of one hand crossed the whole time that his engine would survive the trip with an actively casting sorceress. In the end they made it to his house, but the automatic transmission was starting to make some rather tortured sounds and the radio kept turning on and shutting off on it's own when Max mercifully parked in his driveway, in front of a modest bungalow in good repair, with a small lawn that could use a trimming.

Please come in, you are welcome in my home

They walked in. The main floor of the house was in that weird limbo between clean and messy characteristic of men who had outgrown the filth of their early twenties but still lived alone. It was furnished with a mix of Ikea furniture and comfortable second hand couches and inexpertly decorated. All in all a pleasant enough place, much less American Psycho than Lucas', but just as devoid of a woman's touch.

Corinne, we can go seal this thing downstairs, you two... there's some beer and leftovers in the fridge, I think some chips in that cabinet, help yourselves. I'll be back up in a few

He unlocked the door to the basement and led Cori downstairs. The basement was divided in three rooms linked by a small corridor. They passed the first two quickly but Cori could see out of the corner of her eye that the first one was filled with bookcases, a large couch and a folding table, and the second one looked like a small machine shop. The third one was behind another locked door at the end. The floor was bare concrete, one wall was filled with shelves holding all manner of things used for conjuring and potion making, on the opposing wall was a table with a few bunsen burners, beakers, and an honest-to-goodness small chauldron, with an eye-wash station next to it. In the middle of the room was a heavy hardwood table, the surface covered in burns and stains, and in the last free corner, with a full 3 feet free of clutter around it, a steel and silver circle was embedded in the floor. Max picked up a smooth river stone from a shelf before sweeping the dust off the circle and handing Cori the rock

Here, put the stamp under that and seal the circle, should hold it long enough and keep it from being blown away. I have some candles if you think it'll help

Corinne listens to the racket the truck is making with a wince, knowing full well the sort of damage she'd accidentally done to a number of cars in the past. It took her a long time to realize it was her causing so much electrical damage to her own shiny new car (obtained cheaply through a surprising confluence of sales and automaker refunds of questionable authenticity) and sudden shorts and hiccups in the rides of her friends. She generally tried to stick with the simplest of mass transit these days when traveling farther than running distance.

Upon seeing Maxime's basement she's shot through with envy, and between her own past and the object in her hands, her guilt and concern for others force her to tamp that feeling down.

She considers his small corner circle and the candles for a long moment. "Yeah, I can use that. Make this a safe spot for it, at least until we need to move it some somethin'."

She places the stone and book in the circle, rings it with lit candles, and then - frowning - slowly waves her bracelet through the flames of each candle, concentrating on linking the heat and waxy essence of each to the hot metal, and then uses a finger to place a single drop or way on the stamp book. She then blows out the candles.

"That ought ta do it. Heck of a setup you have here, Max." She frowns again at the bracelet, the scorch marks, and places it back on her wrist with the others.

She transfers her suppression from the bracelet to the candles and links the circle with the wax on the book.

Solstice was also quite worried about the strange noises the car was making, though the fact that it may have been unnatural for them was something she hadn't considered in the first place. She was still not fond of riding in these vehicles, and just as the apprehension began to wane slightly, it started making some new quirks.

She entered Max's home, thankfully invited in cordially, and she took in the surroundings. The home also wasn't impressive in her opinion. But then again, perhaps she should expect as much from a grown man living by his lonesome. Or at least, she assumed he was single...

Solstice hadn't said anything during the ride, or even after being invited in. She just nodded. The whole group was eerily quiet. Well, perhaps it was a good thing. It would be nice if this whole investigation was just a quiet little matter, they found out whoever it was pulling the strings, they delivered the information, received their rewards, and then went on with their lives. One could hope for as much anyway.

At the mention of beer and chips, Solstice merely nodded again and said, "Your hospitality is appreciated." She was polite enough about it, but didn't really seem interested. As Max and Corine did magical stuff down in the basement, Solstice peered at the various decorations throughout the immediate vicinity without straying too far. There were a couple old photos in some stand-up frames atop a shelf, some of which appeared to contain Max or a younger version of himself anyway. Others, presumably friend and family members. Another large, framed banner of sorts Solstice didn't entirely understand...

There also was a small stack of newspapers, the top images and headlines apparently about the murder they were investigating. With some interest, Solstice gingerly picked up the newspaper and began reading it... though the format was pretty confusing to her. It seemed several completely different writings were all crammed haphazardly on the same surface. Eventually, she figured out how to properly read the article of interest, only for it to be be cut off midway, apparently.

Continued on page A7

What? Why? Where was this?

Solstice searched the rest of the front page and random pages within the newspaper with little progress. Just as she thought she might have spotted something that resembled the odd page numberings, half the pages fell out of the rest, making a hopeless mess.

"Oh dear..." she gasped. "L-lukas, do you... uh, are you familiar with this... manuscript?" The words to describe it were simply beyond her. And what's worse, what if this was one of Max's private things? Why would Lukas even know anything about it either? The possibility made the Fae extremely nervous. She was being a terrible guest, and here she was asking if another guest knew how to correct her grievous blunder.

The stamp shudders slightly as Corrine releases the suppression, but both she and Max can feel whatever the effect the stamp was having dissipate entirely, the circle successfully enclosing whatever was contained within.

Lucas glances over at Solstice. "Manuscript?" he asks, stepping over and glancing over the newspaper. "This is a newspaper," he says simply, looking over it. "Were you reading the article about the murder?"

Solstice nodded. "Yes... or at least, I was..." she said, indicating the mess of papers on the floor. "I did not know it was bound so loosely... or rather, that it wasn't bound at all."

She placed what remained in her hands neatly on the floor and picked up another fallen page trying to make sense of it and where it went, but the concept was so alien to her, she could do little more than stare helplessly at it.

Max looked slightly embarrassed

Thanks... a big chunk of my disposable income has gone into this stuff for the last few years and I like ot think it's getting along well... The potion ingredients and other doodads are actually pretty easy to find, you wouldn't believe what I get on Etsy... The books are a bit harder, wizards do not like to share information and it's very hard to sort what's real and what's just crap. Anyway, I'm hungry and thirsty, let's go grab something and get to work

He led her back up, offered a sandwich and a drink to anyone who wanted some.

Seeing Solstice's confusion

Yeah those would be confusing if you didn't grow up with them... here you go

He showed her how to arrange the sheets

After around ten minutes of catching their breath and talking the group wandered back downstairs

Alright so how do we do this.... There's nothing dangerous in the library, just don't dog-ear my books please. As for the lab if you don't know what something is don't touch it. We have a cursed stamp that seems to exacerbate the effects of a wendigo curse, maybe we could use it to track down the caster...

Solstice was relieved that Max wasn't upset about the newspaper, and everything was squared away again. To her slight disappointment, there wasn't much information that she already didn't know. And the things she learned were what amounted to guesses and half-promises of the mortal authorities, and the reactions of their neighbors.

Going downstairs with the others, she was extra-careful and didn't dare meddle with anything. She said, "Yes, hopefully you could find some method to track them... hmm. It's likely that the stamp was cursed before Mr. Wellington acquired it. But how did he get all those stamps?"

What about mundane tracking? There might be a record of the postal transaction. Even a return address on an envelope or something...

Anna

Annabelle had gotten a message on her phone that she could meet up with the rest at their current address. So as her shift ended, she headed off home for a quick shower and change of clothes before heading off to rejoin the others.
She headed up to the door, rechecking the address just to be safe, and then knocked a few times, sincerely hoping she'd gotten the correct address.

She was now wearing a functional skirt with a t-shirt saying 'Rad' in bold letters and her hair was done up in a ponytail, instead of her prior one-piece white summer dress.

After researching the matter and prodding at the stamp magically, Max and Cori together manage to piece together an idea of what my have happened. The stamp isn't afflicted with the wendigo curse, but rather, an enchantment meant to poison the mind and enhance feelings of greed. It's likely the stamp inflicted Mr. Wellington with greed, marking him for the wendigo.

This, of course, naturally leads into a different question entirely: Who enchanted the stamp in the first place?

Corinne sighs and chews the corner of her lip. "Well, that sucks. Guess we have to widen our search. Start looking for ... what? Deranged magic-wielding needles in a hay stack? I reckon we can mark somebody and wait for the critter to come callin'" She's only half-serious. "That still won't find us who did it to begin with, and who knows if they can find another one if we do off it." She looks at Maxine thoughtfully. "What do you suppose they needed to make this marker? Some items we can track back to a store or something? How would you do it?"

Max

When Anna rang the bell Max went back up to let her in and brought her up to speed. She was not really able to contribute to the research due to her lack of knowledge of the supernatural world but Max handed her a few primer books and pamphlets he kept several copies of to give to new members of the Paranet for her to read and keep if she wanted them. There was an annotated copy of the Unseelie Accords, an explanation of the Laws of magic, Wizard McCoy's book on elemental magic, and a bestiary he had put together himself filled with descriptions the more common varieties of fae creatures, vampires, and such. Solstice was quite put off by the title he had given this book, the Monster Manual I.

He then settled back into the stamps examination in earnest, and hmmmmd thoughtfully for about thirty seconds before answering Corinne.

Tells us a lot actually. The stamp is Wendigo bait... wouldn't need the bait if they fully controlled the Wendigo. Though they can obviously influence it to a degree given it's outside of it's usual range by several hundred miles and what Solstice and Lukas saw in the Nevernever. So their control is limited, either in scope or in quantity. We might be dealing with an organization where only one or two members can control the thing, the others just know how to bait it, or we might be dealing with an individual who can only control it for short periods of time. If we were dealing with a more... sane monster we might be able to reason with it using that information but I doubt we'd get far with a wendigo.

As to how I'd do it... Stamps wouldn't be particularly hard to enchant that way. They're money for all intents and purposes, and have been used as ersatz currency often enough, add the collector market and it should be easy to bind a greed spell to a valuable enough one. Then I'd need something from a Wendigo or from a prior victim of it's curse to draw it to the cursed person once it takes hold. Other than that I don't think I'd need anything terribly unusual. But there should be some markings on the stamp to anchor the enchantment, finding them might give us a hint.

The stamp itself however... I'm not a philatelist so I don't know this one from a bog-standard postage stamps but it'd have to have some value already to give it some metaphysical weight, so it might be possible to track down where it came from. Hobbyist markets like that are pretty small and tight-knit so we might get lucky.

He scratched his throat to get everyone's attention and addressed them seriously

This is dark magic, make no mistake. If we're dealing with a mortal spellcaster they're a warlock, in violation of the Fourth Law of magic, and you could argue for the First too. Any one of us would be easy meat for someone like that, so be careful. And if we're not dealing with a mortal then it might be even worse. We might want to think about calling the Warden if we can't get anywhere soon

Yes, Solstice was definitely irked that the title of the little book was called "Monster Manual". :smalltongue:

But with a near-silent sigh, she took it in stride, imagining that's just what all the silly mortals who don't understand anything call people like her and other beings. But if they were not being cautious, they should be afraid, and rightly so.

In any case, she listened to Max's spiel and replied, "Trying to infect someone with this greed curse may work. But I have a feeling that some among us would have an objection to that. And is possible that even doing so, despite the dangers, will not lead us to the people who originally made the curse."

"The most straightforward way to go about this may be to develop a tracking ritual which would draw you to other such spells within this city. It just might work, given that the message said it's only the first. Unless you think they will choose a completely different way to end their next target?"

"I also know nothing about these 'stamps', but perhaps you could find an expert on these mundane artifacts? Knowing the origins of the stamp, how it was acquired in the first place to be enchanted, and by what means Mr. Wellington received it could also be helpful in finding the culprit."

Annabelle listens in to all that's told, since it's all pretty new to her, well, at least the reality of it. She's seen games, heard stories and watch TV series about some of the stuff she hears the others talk about (as well as what those pamphlets, resumes and quick-guides she was loaned as well). It was a lot to take in and it was really nice that it was only the more basic stuff about... well, reality.

Based on Max's belief that the stamp was enchanted before it was acquired by the victim, Lucas thought about how to determine where it came from. While the nerds talked about magic stuff, Lucas peered over the stamp. He attempted to examine it for any distinguishing details: Date of Printing, Country of Origin, and other such noteworthy details. With the assistance of Google, he attempted to identify exactly what stamp it was.

After he identified the stamp, he attempted to determine where in the State of Iowa it would be possible to purchase that specific stamp, by searching for a store that would have it in stock over the internet.

"Hm. As far as finding the monster itself I can maybe ask some itty-bitty pixies. You'd be amazed at how they get around. Though with the Sidhe involved I don't know if that connection's trustworthy. And it still won't solve the bigger problem."

She crosses her arms and sighs. "If you still don't trust them, leave me to handle it then." And then turning to Max she says, "You made plans for tomorrow. What of today? Is it not possible to devise a ritual which can detect similar greed charms?"

The "science" of magic rituals was a vague concept to Solstice. It was something she learned a little about, yet she still didn't have all the know-how to reliably put a ritual together for herself.

Solstice's eyes visibly widen, and she takes more than a few steps back. That was a lot of powdered iron. Looking behind her and carefully moving back, she's all the way by the door.

"A-alright. Tell me when you're done. Or if you need assistance."

Iron. Why did it have to be iron?

Shortly after, as Max begins performing the ritual, she ducks out of the room, staying a few feet from the door. Who knows what would happen if he botched this up? Would the powder explode everywhere? She didn't want to chance it.

As Max begins pouring his power into the map, the iron filings shudder and dance, standing straight up. The fillings begin conglomerating around the Wellington's household, before starting to leave a thin trail to the Northwest, following Route 92 before flowing up US-65. The filings snake to a neighborhood South of Indianola Country Clubs, where they suddenly splinter and begin spread across the map in a spiderweb.

Eventually, the fillings settle in a spiderweb with points dotted around the town. The thickest is the spot near Idianola Country Clubs, with the second one being Samuel Wellington's home.

Max

Max just stared at the map, implications dancing in his brain

Fuuuuuuuck

Either Aldoris' bunch, who he still hadn't confirmed were actually the Court of Roses, had a huge network among the area's elite or their involvement was a coincidence. Sam was a businessman, he would probably have spent time at the country club, rubbed elbows with the members, maybe been one. These were people predisposed to greed, wouldn't take much t convince some of them that stamp collecting was a worthy investment and then....

And why not stamp collecting, the little paper squares could be worth thousands, all it took was a wise and knowledgeable investor to make a fortune. Take this one, why burn it when it could be worth vast amounts in a few years, let alone the few hundred he was likely to live?

Max finally recognized the alien thoughts as the stamp's influence. He shook his head, rubbed his eyes, and quickly traced around the fillings with a felt tip pen, then broke the spell

Quick Corrinne seal it back in, damn thing was starting to affect me already

Once that was done he carefully swept up the iron fillings back in their bottle and called Solstice back in

You can come back in Solstice. Sorry about the iron, it's what I usually use for that spell and while I could have figured something else out it would have taken a while

To the assembled little party

Looks like our buddy Aldoris might have been mistaken... It's the town's elites that are being targeted. It's possible the country club's membership has some overlap with his clique but I doubt it'd be that large.

She didn't start by bemoaning about iron, but she said, "So one of those is Mr. Wellington's home, and the other is known as a 'country club'?"

She wasn't sure she knew what that was. A large wooden implement of sorts to hunt with out in the prairies or woods and.. club rabbits or groundhogs with...? No, but they were obviously talking about a location. Hmm...

He was breathing heavily, and he glared at the other inhabitants of the room. He closed his eyes and focused his breathing, and he was able to calm down. Lukas thought for a moment. Yeah, I know one of the chiefs there. The guy was driving out in the outskirts and he ran his car into a ditch. I was doing a delivery to one of the nearby houses, so I came across him first. I managed to get his car out of the ditch, and since he was intoxicated, he was quite grateful that no cops got involved.

And then I guess we'd have to wait for the Wendigo to appear... then it will kill some people, and we could follow it? Or see if someone writes another message in blood?"

Solstice stared blankly in thought for a moment and said, "On second thought, it's probably a bad idea if more people die. So you'd want to contain the magic. But then no wendigo. We would have to solely rely on investigating how the mundane objects which were enchanted were obtained and figure out who they came from."

The following day, Lukas manages to contact his friend, Daniel Holden, a chef at the Country Club. The two had a long-lasting friendship, and Daniel was happy to hear from Lukas. Daniel sets up a dinner for the group as a favor to Lukas, and does so under the idea that they're "trial members." The dress code is essentially what one would wear to church, a nice collared shirt and khaki pants for the men, and a nice blouse with khakis or a dress for the ladies.

The five are seated around a table when Daniel comes out and takes a seat with them. "So, uh, you wanted to talk about something?" he asks Lukas, looking between the other four as well. "Somethin' about new members right? Or if anyone's been acting funny lately?"

Solstice eventually decided that trying to pose as a middle-aged woman was a bad idea, but the next day, she was still able to put out a descent "Sunday's best". It was easy if she didn't deviate from her real self too much. The main differences being that her dress was longer and more substantial, and the pupils of her eyes appeared to be the normal human variety.

Her pouch became a nice purse. But the bow and quiver that came with it was problematic. The trouble with glamours was you couldn't just make something disappear outright. It had to take on an appearance that was at least remotely similar to the thing being concealed. The bow also was of great value (both of worth and sentimental) so Solstice didn't want to just leave it behind somewhere either.

In the end, however, she had to wind up leaving it behind in the car along with Max's arsenal, because there just wasn't anything they could think of that wouldn't raise many questions or just look too off.

Now sitting down at a table, she wasn't sure what she should tell this stranger who wasn't related to her at all, nor the earlier events. She looked around at the others, assuming a role of a child that was taught to be seen and not heard, and let someone else do the talking.

After the others left his house the last evening Max spend half an hour writing down a letter to the warden as he had told Mrs Wellington, outlining the situation and what they had learned. He spent the early morning grading the final exams of one of his classes before leaving for the country club an hour and a half before the meeting. He waited for the time to come by knocking a few buckets of balls downrange. He was not much of a golfer but he always found it relaxing. He chatted a bit with some of the professors at Simpson and a few businesspeople he had worked for as a consultant, telling everyone he was thinking of joining and wanted to try out the facilities first. He actually ended up with a tee-time for a week from then with 3 members and a lead for a lucrative contract. He kept his ears open for talk of stamps collecting or members acting unlike themselves but heard nothing.

He joined the others at the table and engaged in meaningless chatter with them until Daniel came by. He spoke to the cook informally, as to a peer, but didn't introduce himself.

Yeah, we're investigating something for a mutual acquaintance of all of us, won't bore you with the details. Anyway one guy who I have reason to think hung out here started getting really into stamp collecting and went kinda nuts, alienated his wife and family, and eventually turned up dead, Sam Wellington. It was a while back, but he said somethin' about this fancy stamp he'd just sold to some sucker in-town. May have been the Wellington guy. The guy-- the stamp seller--we're talkin' about is kinda... outta place, should I say? Like, he's got the money for a place like this, but not the class. I'd never really seen him around these parts before this year. Kind of a weirdo, always tryin' to make business deals, spookin' people and stuff. Not a pleasant fella. Gives me the creeps," he says, visibly shuddering, though whether it's just for show is difficult to tell.

"What was his name again? Somethin' Italian... Oh yeah! Alonzo Caesari," he says, before his eyes suddenly dart to the doorway. "Speak a the Devil, here he is now," Daniel murmurs, nodding his head towards the entrance. A tall, pale man stands there, sunglasses covering his face. He greets the hostess politely before taking a seat by the window, looking off into the distance, seemingly oblivious to everything around him.

Solstice casually eyed the man briefly a few times, trying not to obviously be staring at him.

She leaned into the table a bit and whispered to the others, "I have an idea. Perhaps you all could have an audible discussion about stamps?"

She shrugged and resumed her normal posture. It may or may not work, but it seemed the best way to go about this was to be subtle. And the sooner they got the information they needed the better. Solstice did not think she would be eating food here... even if it was palatable, the fact remained that the "silverware" was stainless steel. There was no way she was putting anything in her mouth with that.

Anna

Feeling a bit outside her area of expertise and comfort, Annabelle had just followed alongside the others and done only one this since the arrival at the Club: She listened. The only way for her to really manage to become more useful the others, would be to learn what she could about this wider world she's still only a fledgeling to.

So she just sat quietly there with the others, taking in everything said, hinted to, or otherwise expressed in a way that could prove useful.

Thank for your assistance Daniel. Lucas intoned formally. He sneaked a glance at the newcomer and weighed the group's options. Solstice's suggestion of attempting to lure this stranger over had some merit. That being said, Lucas doubted that anyone of his generation could convincingly claim to being an expert on stamps. Not to mention that deception wasn't something that came naturally to Lucas. All other factors being equal, he preferred to take the straight forward approach when solving problems.

Feel free to follow if you wish. He said to the group, before he stood up and walked over to Alonzo. He sat down in a chair opposite him. It's quite remarkable that this much wealth has been accumulated in the middle of nowhere. He commented.

Solstice watched as Lukas got up and sauntered over like he owned the place. She thought she rather liked his confidence and directness. So no beating around the bush then. No lying either? That has yet to be seen. For Solstice that would have to be the case, but the closer any conversation was to the truth without outright exposing the supernatural, the easier things would be on her.

As she watched things unfold, she no longer even pretended to be unaware or disinterested. Taking Lukas up on the invitation, she got up and began to walk over as well.

"Hey Lukas. Is this a mentor of yours?" Of course, she believed the answer was 'no', but she didn't have any compunctions when it came to merely asking questions.

Gracefully, she took a seat next to Lukas. She was noticeably a lot closer than normal. So maybe Solstice was trying to make it seem like they were a couple or something. It might be weird, but at least pulling it off would probably make the fact that she just followed him over like that acceptable.

Just be honest with yourself. If a whole table of five people randomly got up to join a complete stranger at another table, wouldn't that just look weird to anyone in the room?

In any event, Solstice flashed the man a warm smile, extended a hand, and said, "Please, call me Abigale. And don't mind me too much. I just like listening."

Lukas caught on to Solstice's game. He changed his demeanor as Solstice approached in order to play the role that he had been assigned. He pulled out the chair for Solstice, and lightly touched the small of her back as she sat down. He looked over to Solstice and said calmly. No, I haven't met this gentleman before.

Lucas reached out and firmly grabbed Alonzo's pro-offered hand. Albricht. Lukas Albricht. As he shook hands with Alonzo, Lucas applied a portion of his inhuman strength. Not enough to damage an ordinary human, but enough that Lucas would expect to see some kind of discomfort. So, what brings you here?

Alonzo gives Lukas another grin. Lukas can sense... well, "inhuman malevolence" might be the best term to describe it.
"A pleasure, Mr. Albricht. You have quite a firm grip," he says, matching Lukas' strength without a second thought. He barely even seems to register the amount of strength Lukas is putting in. He pulls his hand backed, an eyebrow arched behind his glasses. "I suppose I could ask the same of you, but as you asked first, I'll answer first. I specialize in making business transactions, and this is the best place to do so, I've found. Curios, sundries, miscellaneous objects... Things many may not consider valuable, but to some, they're priceless."

He leans in a little closer. "Can I interest you in anything, perhaps? If you're looking to start a collection of any sort, or if you have one, I'm more than happy to help."

True to her word, Solstice didn't say anything yet. Would be pretty daft to say you just like listening, and then just butt into a conversation.

She smirked softly and briefly at the comment about Lukas's grip, and she maintained a casual interest. Kind of like she expected the conversation to be about something slightly different, but just rolled with it anyway. After all. She did like listening. :smallwink:

In spite of Lukas's efforts, he couldn't hide his surprise. This was quite literally the first time in his life that he had met someone who could match his own strength. Something about this man was off. In face of this abnormality, he felt the urge to rip and tear at this thing, until all traces of its taint were cleansed from his domain. At least Lukas had been able to determine that Alonzo wasn't human.

I appreciate your offer. Lucas commented. He didn't trust Alonzo at all, but he felt the Dragon's Greed begin to rise from within. I have very particular tastes. What sort of vintage baseball collectibles could you deliver to me?. He scratched his chin thoughtfully, sizing up the stranger as he waited for his response.

He folded his fingers in front of him. I have a cash flow problem right now. Lukas admitted. It was a shameful thing for him to say, but he needed what Alonzo had to offer. Max

Max closed his eyes after a few seconds and turned back to the 3 women and continued in a low tone

Doesn't look like he noticed me... anyway, like I suspected he's a White court vamp, though vampire is not a really accurate description of them. They aren't undead as far as I know, or drink blood. I'm not an expert on them but basically they feed on emotions, typically lust, fear or despair, and can mess with your mind to make you feel those emotions, making them a probable source for the succubi and incubi myths. And of course being fed on in not good for you, it can and often does end in death. They're strong, though and fast, but not overly so as supernatural creatures go, that kind of power set usually comes with a weakness but if they have one I've never heard of it. Still, enough bodily trauma should do the trick if it comes to that so I'd rather take him on than the wendigo...

He doesn't seem to be feeding right now so I wonder what his game is... maybe he gets them cursed by the wendigo then creeps around the households to feed off the pain the families go through. So now the question is, do we go bail Lukas out or do we let this play through a bit longer, see what happens? He doesn't seem to be affecting him in any meaningful way at the moment but I'm a bit concerned anyway.

He looked around the table at Solstice, Anna and Corrinne, waiting for their answers

She couldn't be sure what was happening over there with Lukas. Max considered the options while listening to the interplay between Solstice and Corinne

Yeah, there's probably an exit to the golf course by the toilets.... I'll go check

Solstice, could you go get your bow and watch the main exit, stop him if he comes out after a fight, get some of your little folk buddies to tail him if it doesn't come to that. Anna, no offense but fights don't seem to be your thing so if things get too out of hand drink this, it'll help you get away. and if you don't hear from us tell Aldoris about what we found.

Assuming they agreed he left for the restrooms, checked for an exit and used the fact that nobody was looking at him to put his pistol in his coat pocket then came back.

He felt something that did not understand. Fear, anxiety, all of which were emotions that were foreign to him. He didn't understand what was going on, but he was able to put two and two together to guess that the thing in front of him was involved. Feeling that he was under attack, Lukas responded in the only way that was acceptable to his nature. He escalated.

He tried his best to swallow his anxiety, and he gave Alonzo a level look. We were having such a good conversation. Why would you insist on acting so terribly rude to me? He mustered as much self-worth as he could. Like I said. I intend to play a long game. Lukas's head was muddled, he couldn't concentrate on the Samuel Wellington case. He was just focused on the potential opportunities for gain, and the need to strike back against the thing in front of him. Being wealthy isn't just about numbers on a sheet paper. He gestured to the finery around the club. It's about class. It's about prestige. It's about having others look up at you and your possessions with respect. You know, we could have a mutually beneficial relationship. I could help you with your business, teach you a few things He gave Alonzo a judging look. How not to give off such a pedo vibe for starters.

"You- you want me to just directly threaten him? And that is after you start a fight here? I don't think that is such a good idea..."

Solstice stood up once again. "I am sorry, Maxime, but I think a little truth and diplomacy would be a much better alternative to making a scene and more enemies."

She walked over back to the table where Lukas and the vampire sat and placed a comforting hand on Lukas's shoulder. A wave of euphoria washed over him. Hopefully, whatever fear or greed the vampire had put on him or was trying to feed off of would be countered by these positive, if not vicarious, emotions Solstice placed upon him. On second thought, Solstice really hoped this guy wasn't some kind of lust vampire. Then again, this hardly seemed the place...

"Pardon my interruption, Mr. Caesari. We have not been straightforward with you. We are not here for financial advice or baseball cards," she said, shooting a look at Lukas. "We are here because a monster not only threatens this town, but a Faerie court. A Wendigo. I highly doubt you are responsible, but I still think you know something about this. Would you help us before the balance is destroyed and a warden comes investigating?"

Solstice uses her spirit maneuver Euphoria to, in this case, give Lukas a positive emotional tag that will counter-balance the anxiety one put on him. If it does not remove the tag placed on him, and now we have two, let's call this new one "Feels Good Man". :smallwink: This costs Solstice 1 point of mental stress.

Also, I am self-compelling one of Solstice's aspects: A bit too honest. I am pretty sure that even if this doesn't blow up in our face, there was a big enough risk not knowing the outcome to warrant a fate point.
