View Full Version : What is the Giant Wolf Spider supposed to look like?

TentacleSurpris

Does it have the head of a spider and the body of a wolf? The head of a wolf and the body of a spider? Does it have 8 wolf legs? 4 spider legs? Does it lay eggs or birth its young live? Does it spin a web or howl?

Serious questions need to be answered.

Probably a lot like this (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolf_spider), only medium sized.
Of course, that would make it the first two-animal-name-creature in the history of D&D that wasn't turned into a ridiculous composite. I'm looking at you, Sea Lion!

Like a giant wolf spider? Eight legs, four eyes and pedipalps. If it were a chimera (in the mythological sense), then maybe it might have cracked an illustration and you'd know whether it was a toothed spider or a wolf with string dangling from its rear orifice or something in between. Lacking an illustration or vivid description, assume the most mundane option. Occam's Razor applied to Fantasy.

The sea lion thing is so ridiculous I've mentally crucified the very concept of the monster and will do the same to the designer as soon as I figure out if they've made any redeeming designs. What was wrong with the name "merlion" or, y'know, just using sharks or leopard seals?

Indeed, it looks like a regular run of the mill wolf spider only giant sized.

It's a ten foot long wolf with eight legs.
Sexy.

Serious, WotC was asking for that. After the Owlbear... you can't just say "Wolf Spider" and expect everyone to know you're *not* talking about something a crazy Wizard bred in a lab.

Honestly, knowing what a wolf spider is... I was hoping someone had created a literal version of this creature. I was hoping to come into this thread with a picture of a spider/wolf hybrid, suffice it to say I was slightly disappointed.

On a related note, I think I'm going to approach my artist friend to create one.

EDIT: A google image search for "Wolf Spider Hybrid" will not disappoint.

Well along with the giant normal wolf spider. There is a Demon Lord called Miska the Wolf-Spider. (Who is a Giant Spider with a four armed man's body with three heads one human the other two are wolves.) He is worshiped by a a species of Demons called Spyder Fiends that look like this

Later on they got changed so that have human arms in addition to their current look.

Oh man, that wolf spider demon with human arms is sweet.

I'm reading Perdido Street Station right now, and there is a similar enormous spider demon with human arms, but its arms are the size of a child's, and it's constantly rubbing its hands together like a nervous pervert. Hands + spiders = nope.

Wolf howls have occasionally echoed through the valley and night has fallen. For safety, your weary party has decided to take refuge in the trees. This will give you the advantage if a pack of wolves prowl into your camp area. You've also lashed yourselves to the sturdy limbs so as to not fall out in the middle of the night.

Groggy, you barely remembering a calming, sensuous dream of someone running their fingers through your hair. Perhaps you haven't woken up. The fingers are still stroking your hair...

There you go. With a 3.5 (I think) monster stat-block as a freebie.

(Just a little hug...)It'd be a great companion for janusmaxwell's Chibi-Lolth Drow (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?493745-Campaign-Journal-First-time-for-everything).

As to which of the many, many options (with varying levels of horribleness) we use, we must answer a question: Which one would a Gnome Ranger use as a mount?

@Joetherat: Perhaps a Giant-Mole? (Idk, I don't have the Monster Manual) At least, is what my experience with 3.5 tells me.

Okay... I need to save this.

So the Wolf Spider is in fact a wolf spider, does that mean a spiderwolf would be the name for the bizarre wizard hybrid?

I mean, I know Wizards love messing with reality, but... why would you do things like that? Like the owlbear? All that INT means nothing with the WIS to back it up.

All of them. He will name him George, and he will hug him and pet him and squeeze him...

Or it could just be Wolfspider! It is like separated words are adjectives to the main thing, while combined words are chimeras. Hyphens create superheroes :smallwink:

There's a bloke called Mordain the Fleshweaver in Eberron. He lives on the far side of Monster-Country Droaam. He can basically be described as "for SCIENCE!!" with transmutation magic. That's how you get owlbears.
