I know that I am known as a pretty pessimistic person here. I constantly make threads about things that suck and talk very negatively.

But on this thread, tell us all what you like.

RULES
1. You can post about your favorite anything, from your favorite book to your favorite potato peeler brand.
2. Tell us why you like your favorites. We want to know. Even if others hate it for that reason, you have your reasons.
3. Please don't start discussions on certain posts. If you want to do that, make your own thread.
4. Please don't bash others for liking something you don't, if you want to talk about why you hate something, make your own thread.
5. This is not a confession board. You don't need to admit to being extremely obsessed about something if you don't want to.
6. Have fun!

To start, my favorite music genre is found try music. I just always liked artists such as Johnny Cash, Chris Ledoux, and others like them.

My favorite D’Artagnan for overall fighting is Michael York. Bill Hobbs's fight choreography is so realistic.

My favorite D’Artagnan for footwork is Gene Kelly. He’s not a great fencer, but oh, can he move gracefully.

My favorite D’Artagnan for swagger is Douglas Fairbanks. In a silent movie, much of the emotion has to be portrayed by body language, and Fairbanks makes a virtue of necessity.

My favorite D’Artagnan for realistic naiveté is Rinal Mukhametov. The scene is which he asks Athos to explain the sexual metaphor in a poem, while preparing to fight a duel with him, is delightful.

My favorite D’Artagnan for convincingly awkward love scenes is Luke Pasqualino. He is always not quite in step, and never quite realizes that Constance wants him, not a suave line.

My favorite older D’Artagnan is Gabriel Byrne. He convincing blends older wisdom with swashbuckling gusto. He can also be the king’s staunchest defender while also berating the king for his actions. [Second choice was Philippe Noiret. In his first scene, he defeats several guardsmen while identifying his fencing moves to them.]

My favorite line about D’Artagnan is, “All my life, all I wanted to be … was him.” In one line, his lieutenant puts into words a lifetime of hero worship, and an absolute reason to want revenge.

My favorite line to D’Artagnan is, “What a complete madman. You know, I’m beginning to form a positive affection for you.” Athos makes real the quickly growing friendship, before the start of their duel.

My favorite line from D’Artagnan is, “I may not have the tunic, but I have the heart of a musketeer.” He makes clear his mission, his commitment, and why is is suddenly joining the side of the three men he was about to duel.

My favorite D’Artagnan for overall fighting is Michael York. Bill Hobbs's fight choreography is so realistic.I saw that movie in the theater as a kid, I loved it! Probably one reason that in High school I signed up for fencing for my PE class, and I'm sure it was one of the reasons I fell in love with Dungeons & Dragons (sword fighting you know).
And on that note;
Favorite movies that influenced my RPG'ing

1) Seventh Voyage of Sinbad
2) Star Wars
3) Excalibur
4) Conan the Destroyer
5) The Sea Hawk
6) Captain Blood
7) The Adventures of Robin Hood
8) Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger
9) The Road Warrior
10) The Lord of the Rings (1970's cartoon version)
11) Young Sherlock Holmes
12) Conan the Barbarian (1980's versionl
13) Hawk the Slayer
14) Jason and the Argonauts

Plus Star Trek and the Hobbit cartoon on TV!

My favorite Mortal Kombat character is Subzero. Not so much because I like to play him, I do, but he has the most interesting backstory of any of them. I mean, really, his rivalry with Scorpion is legendary (up until X, but let's not get into that) and the fact that he killed Scorpion, only for him to come back and kill Subzero is a fascinating story.

Then there came his brother, who took up the name Subzero, and this is where things get pretty complicated. The original Subzero turns into a specter known as Noob Saibot, and the brother, in the new continuity, became a cyborg, but that was retconed, and he became the headmaster of their clan.

Subzero is one of the most memorable characters of Mortal Kombat, and it's pretty awesome that he has lasted all of these years. He was also the one that had a fatality that created the ESRB from that day forward. I mean, what's not to love?

My favorite musical artist is Maynard James Keenan. I love the band Tool, and I love A Perfect Circle. His songs are brilliant, and his melody is very unique in its style. My favorite album from Tool is Lateralus, and from A Perfect Circle is Mer De Nom, their debut album. My favorite songs from Tool are 10,000 Days, Schism, Parabola, and Right in Two. Favorite songs from A Perfect Circle are Orestes, By and Down, Blue, and 3 Libras.

There's a lot to choose from in terms of greatness. Hell, even their album covers and overall art style done by Alex Grey is amazing. If you have never listened to them, and you love Alternative Rock, do not hesitate to check them out.

My favorite anime is probably Haibane Renmei. It has an ethereal atmosphere of deep and quiet mystery, a profoundly affecting emotional and spiritual journey, and the soothing warmth of ordinary life, all wrapped up in thirteen episodes of sweetly paced storytelling. (Even so, ask me tomorrow and I'll probably have a different favorite anime.)

A few of my favorite songs from my youth

The Nervebreakers:
My Girlfriend is a rock.
My Girlfriend is a rock.
I made her out of sol-id stone so I’d never be alone.
My Girlfriend is a rock.

We walk around the block.
She walks good for a rock.
All the neighbors stop and stare, I guess cause she ain’t got no hair.
But that’s okay for a rock.

Everybody asks me how she is in bed,
Does she feel cold, does she feel dead?
I just tell them that she’s alright for me
But she is a little bit, Heav-y!

My Girlfriend is a rock.
My Girlfriend is a rock.
I used to have her made of wood, but she wasn’t very good.
I like them made of rock.

We like to sit and talk.
She talks good for a rock.
All the neighbors stop and stare, can’t understand what she’s saying there.
They don’t understand rock.

Yeah you oughta see her in the swimming pool,
She swims pretty good as a general rule.
But she doesn’t swim, no, quite as good,
As a girl made out of wood.

My Girlfriend is a rock.
She looks like a piece of chalk.
Or maybe alabaster,
I guess I’ll have to ask her.
She really lkes to Pogo, move her feet,
She dances pretty good for a piece of concrete, what the heck she’s just a rock.
My Girlfriend is a rock.
You know it’s only rock,
It’s only, only rock,
It’s only rock, rock
My Girlfriend is a rock.
They don’t understand rock.

The Undertones:
Now I've got a cousin called Kevin
He's sure to go to heaven
Always spotless, clean and neat
The smoothest you can get them

He's got a fur lined sheepskin jacket
My ma said they cost a packet
She won't even let me explain
That me and Kevin were just not the same

Oh my perfect cousin
What I like to do, he doesn't
He's his family's pride and joy
His mother's little golden boy

He's got a degree in economics
Maths, physics and bionics
He thinks that I'm a cabbage
'Cause I hate University Challenge

Even at the age of ten
Smart boy Kevin was a smart boy then
He always beat me at Subbuteo
Cause he flicked the kick and I didn't know

Oh my perfect cousin
What I like to do, he doesn't
He's his family's pride and joy
His mother's little golden boy

His mother bought him a synthesizer
Got the Human League into advise her
Now he's making lots of noise
Playing along with the Art school boys

Girls try to attract his attention
But what a shame, it's in vain total rejection
He will never be left on the shelf
'Cause Kevin he's in love with himself

Oh my perfect cousin
What I like to do, he doesn't
He's his family's private joy
His mother's little golden boy

The Avengers:
Who is the girl you see runnin in the alley?
She's all dressed in white, must be an escapee.

Ah, but she's beautiful, must be a dream
And you're so hungry for some honey and cream yeah

She said, "I'm a mystery."
Found your way into her fantasy.
Gonna cut around the corner
To see what you can see
And there she is, she's sayin
"Don't you follow me. No, no."

She's got a smile like a knife in her teeth
And you're got a pleasure problem
With you sweaty hands.
She says, "I got my business, got no time
for you. Goin to a wedding,
Getting married to myself."

And she says, "Oh, I'm a mystery,
You better stick it with your fantasy,
And don't you try to put your claws in me,
Cause if you do I'm gonna make you real sorry you did.
UH OH UH OH The answer is NO

The Dead Kennedys:
The crowded future stings my eyes
I still find time to exercise
In uniform with two white stripes

Unlock my section of the sand
It's fenced off to the water's edge
I clamp a gas mask on my head

On my beach at night
Bathe in my moonlight

Another tanker's hit the rocks
Abandoned to spill out it's guts
The sand is laced with sticky glops

O' shimmering moonlight sheen upon
The waves and water clogged with oil
White gases steam up from the soil

On my beach at night
Bathe in my moonlight

I squash dead fish between my toes
Try not to step on any bones
I turn around and I go home

I slip back through my basement door
Switch off all that I own below
Dive in my scalding wooden tub

My own beach at night
Electric moonlight

There will always be a moon
Over Marin

I'd only every seen the Avengers and Dead Kennedys up close (they were local) but The Angry Samoans did a cover version of "My girlfriend is a rock", so I got to see the song performed live but not by "the original artist".
This puts me in mine of another grumpy old coot rant of mine; as a kid there was "pogoing" (changing from that was wrong! Dagnabbit!), "headbanging", "slamming", and "thrashing". Then sometime in the 1990's I started hearing the terms "mosh", and "mosh-pit". What evil minded degenerate came up with that! Changes like that chaff me hide!

Those were the simpler days. The days before TVs had a remote or 200 channels. The days before computers. We did so have computers!
They were up in the hills at "The Lawrence Hall of Science", and I'd play with them, with the "games" they had, such as "how much will gas cost you for a drive to Los Angeles,
and then I'd see the results on paper. Later on we had classes with the Commodore PET (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commodore_PET) which had a screen! (Green color lights only)https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c5/Commodore_2001_Series-IMG_0448b.jpg/280px-Commodore_2001_Series-IMG_0448b.jpg

Our "programs" (typically would show an endless repetition of "I'm so bored now" on the screen) were stored on cassette tape. Sadly (for my future) computers back then just seemed useless to me, as Pong (http://m.ponggame.org/) was the best of what I could see them used for.

The days before hippies.
Wait, never mind. There were hippies. As a real little kid, hippies were all I knew! The first "straights" or "squares" (as my Dad would say), I remember encountering were FBI agents who came to question my Dad (we didn't have a television then), in their suits and with their "buzzcut" hair they looked like space aliens to me!
And yes I learned to read from the "Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers" comix that were lying around.
Still pretty funny if you read them today, but I wouldn't let my kids read them yet!
So on topic (I guess);

I notice a trend here... :P

Honestly, while I don't like Superman as a CHARACTER, I like him as a concept. His stories are (at least, the ones I've read) pretty dull and contrived, but the concept of Superman is a great one. He's not just a supremely powerful being, he's a supremely moral one as well. He's someone we can all aspire to be more like-not just in physicality, but in spirit too.

Um..
I've worn leather armor while doing welding work, and the cops upstairs often were armor, but Plate armor, at work?

Hmm...
Years ago the jousting "knights' at the Ren Faire in Marin County would wear Plate...
Just what do you do for a living?
And are they hiring?

Sadly, my current primary line of work (student) does not allow the wearing of plate armor.

But it allows my other favorite clothing, hunting clothes. No one wears it though.

Argh! Such a difficult choice! I do love Charizard, but there are so many others that are just as good... I think right now I'd go for Mismagius as my favourite, because I love the witchy imagery and dark purple colour. I'm running one at the moment that uses Charge Beam and Confuse Ray to draw out fights and pump S.Atk before hitting with big Shadow Ball and Power Gem attacks towards the end of a bout. Very satisfying.

Nice strategy, the one problem you might have is if the opponent can sneak in quick attacks or use double team.

Yeah, the ease of access that most Pokemon have to dark-type moves is a problem, but I'm training an all-ghost team to take on the elite four at the moment so that's just something I have to live with. A good counter to dark moves is the last piece of the puzzle - I've got the aforementioned Mismagius (Lv62), an aggressive Chandelure (Lv52), a durable Golurk (Lv55) with Earthquake, a Drifblim (Lv49) with Fly, and a veteran Jellicent (Lv95, from my 'main 6') with Surf and Ice Beam. The sixth slot is open, and I'm thinking it should be something that can handle dark types. Maybe a Sableye? Can they learn any bug-type moves?
What else? My favourite Olympic sport is Sailing, because it's tactical and you don't need to win every race to be competitive. No two races are the same because of the environmental factors and the fact that every boat's sail has an impact on how much wind the others can catch. Even for someone who doesn't know much about sailing, watching a skilled sailor on a downwind run is enthralling.

I was just looking at this because the Pokemon thread brought up mono-Ghost teams. Sableye and Golurk can learn Signal Beam via move tutor in ORAS only. Sableye and Gengar can pick up Dazzling Gleam via TM in gen 6 only. All three have access to Fighting-type moves in gens 5 and 6 via TM; Golurk learns them by level-up, but Golurk isn't as useful for this purpose when Dark types can just outspeed it with their own super-effective moves. But if you have Brick Break or Focus Blast as a TM, you can cover most Dark-types with that and just power through Sableye if he comes up.
My favorite Pokemon is Dragonair and I don't understand why it evolves into Dragonite. (Well, I do understand, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.)

Dragonair is so much cooler than Dragonite. What a let-down that evolution is. :smallsigh:

My Golurk does, indeed, already know Brick Break, and I feel that is not enough because it can't resist dark-type attacks. I'll see what I can figure out.

I feel more certain than ever that this field should be called the sword-and-sorcery story. This accurately describes the points of culture-level and supernatural element and also immediately distinguishes it from the cloak-and-sword (historical adventure) story—and (quite incidentally) from the cloak-and-dagger (international espionage) story too!

So on topic (I guess);

My favorite music is country music.
While I still like the country music my father listened to when I was a child:

I worked in your orchards of peaches and prunes
I slept on the ground in the light of the moon
On the edge of the city you'll see us and then
We come with the dust and we go with the wind,

I just don't know any contempory country, and what little I've heard on the radio has not inspired me to learn more (Hank Williams still seems great, but what I've heard of Hank Williams Junior sounds awful to me).

The songs I'm most likely to sing along with are the punk rock anthems of my youth:

You say act like I live in a zoo
I know I don't wanna live like you
When I go out you won't let me back in
Climb in the window, I just can't win,

however most new punk songs just gives me a headache. I'm self aware enough to know that the music has hardly changed, the difference must be me, and what is or isn't familiar.

Mostly what I voluntarily listen to now is classical, jazz, and old blues:

When I first came to town, people, I was walkin' down Hastings Street
Everybody was talkin' about the Henry Swing Club
I decided I drop in there that night
When I got there, I say, "Yes, people"
They was really havin' a ball
Yes, I know

Throw in an Alakazam, and you might be okay.
Well, let's see. Coverage moves currently wreck Velaryon's team--specifically, Fighting-type coverage and Rock Slide. Fairy types are also a struggle. Alakazam handles the first, but not the other two.

A good Pokemon to answer Rock and Fairy is Metagross, whose only drawback is taking neutral damage from Fighting. Mawile has the same type advantages and even better overall defensive typing, but its defensive stats are significantly worse, and Metagross' additional weaknesses (Ghost and Dark) are adequately handled by Velaryon's existing lineup anyway.

Another notable option is Gengar, who ignores Fighting moves entirely and resists Fairy. On the other hand, Gengar's poor native bulk makes it difficult to switch in even on resisted moves. And Gengar neither resists nor deals SE damage to Rock.

Nidoking and Nidoqueen boast resistances to all three types while hitting two of them for SE damage. However, Rock-type coverage moves are often carried by Ground-types, which have super-effective STAB moves against these Pokemon. Metagross also has this issue.

Last thought: Venusaur resists Fighting and Fairy, and deals SE damage to Fairy, Ground, and Rock.

I guess my vote would be for Venusaur or Gengar. Both of them have an annoying Psychic weakness, but Velaryon has a lot of Dark types for that.

Nice girls, not one with a defect
Cellophane shrink-wrapped, so correct

She looks so good that he gets down and begs

She is watching the detectives
"Ooh, he's so cute"
She is watching the detectives
When they shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot
They beat him up until the teardrops start
But he can't be wounded 'cause he's got no heart

Long shot at that jumping sign
Invisible shivers running down my spine
Cut to baby taking off her clothes
Close-up of the sign that says "We never close"
He snatches at you and you match his cigarette
She pulls the eyes out with a face like a magnet
I don't know how much more of this I can take
She's filing her nails while they're dragging the lake

She is watching the detectives
"Ooh, he's so cute"
She is watching the detectives
Oh when they shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot
They beat him up until the teardrops start
But he can't be wounded 'cause he's got no heart

You think you're alone until you realize you're in it
Now fear is here to stay, love is here for a visit
They call it instant justice when it's past the legal limit
Someone's scratching at the window, I wonder who is it?
The detectives come to check if you belong to the parents
Who are ready to hear the worst about their daughter's disappearance
Though it nearly took a miracle to get you to stay
It only took my little fingers to blow you away

Just like watching the detectives
Don't get cute
Just like watching the detectives
I get so angry when the teardrops start
But he can't be wounded 'cause he's got no heart

Nice girls, not one with a defect
Cellophane shrink-wrapped, so correct
Red dogs under illegal x
She looks so good that he gets down and begs

She is watching the detectives
"Ooh, he's so cute"
She is watching the detectives
When they shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot
They beat him up until the teardrops start
But he can't be wounded 'cause he's got no heart

Long shot at that jumping sign
Invisible shivers running down my spine
Cut to baby taking off her clothes
Close-up of the sign that says "We never close"
He snatches at you and you match his cigarette
She pulls the eyes out with a face like a magnet
I don't know how much more of this I can take
She's filing her nails while they're dragging the lake

She is watching the detectives
"Ooh, he's so cute"
She is watching the detectives
Oh when they shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot
They beat him up until the teardrops start
But he can't be wounded 'cause he's got no heart

You think you're alone until you realize you're in it
Now fear is here to stay, love is here for a visit
They call it instant justice when it's past the legal limit
Someone's scratching at the window, I wonder who is it?
The detectives come to check if you belong to the parents
Who are ready to hear the worst about their daughter's disappearance
Though it nearly took a miracle to get you to stay
It only took my little fingers to blow you away

Just like watching the detectives
Don't get cute
Just like watching the detectives
I get so angry when the teardrops start
But he can't be wounded 'cause he's got no heart

Watching the detectives
It's just like watching the detectives
Watching the detectives
Watching the detectives

Watching the detectives
Watching the detectives
They're watching the detectives
Watching the detectives

*horrified face* That's not even the best song on that album, you heathen!

It's the best song on any album, as far as I'm concerned. But admittedly, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness was not lacking for excellent songs. The Recording Academy's failure to award it Album of the Year in 1997 was absolutely criminal, and single-handedly shattered my faith in the credibility of entertainment industry awards of any kind.

I never played past generation 2, so Fairy types aren't a thing in my Pokemon universe. Also, if I were building a team based on effectiveness rather than how much I like them, I would build my team rather differently.

That's totally fair; I just got back into Pokemon recently and started paying attention to competitive stuff for the first time, so I was happy to seize on the hypothetical when 8Bit brought it up. (Also, Mawile and Gengar and Metagross are some of my favorite Pokemon, so for me it was pretty good overlap.)

Oh man, yeah. I loved The Crucible. We did it at the beginning of year 9, which was when we started getting into the good books. We did 1984 that year as well, then Of Mice and Men the year after, which was probably the high water mark.

A confession of sorts: Because of The Crucible, when I started playing Town of Salem, I would always name myself Giles Corey and I used (and still use) the Giles Corey skin.

My friend bought me a 2DS, so now I feel pretty much obligated to get back into Pokemon so I can play with him.

I like Gengar - I used him in my team for Gold and for one of my playthroughs of Red, but I can't count him among my favorites because he let me down too many times by failing to connect with Hypnosis. Seriously, you'd think it has accuracy on par with Fissure for all the times it failed to put the enemy to sleep.

Hypnosis is 55%, right? The RNG in Pokémon never struck me as particularly fair; I try to avoid any move with less than 95% accuracy because they're too unreliable.

I can't confirm or deny your numbers because I'm woefully out of touch with Pokemon, but I will say that moves like Fire Blast, Thunder, and Blizzard had an amazing tendency to miss exactly when I most needed them to hit, despite having something like 80% accuracy. So yeah, your policy of avoiding moves with accuracy lower than 95% seems sound to me.

*ahem*

I believe it's "goddess".

Tyche is a goddess from Greek Myth (and also the Forgotten Realms) - the deity of ****. From the Forgotten Realms wiki:

"Tyche’s faith taught that one should be bold, for to dare was to live. The battle cry of the followers of Tyche was “Fortune favors the bold.” Those who had no direction or goals soon encountered ill ****, for those on no set course were at the capricious mercy of misfortune, which was no mercy at all. A brave heart and willingness to take risks beat out a carefully wrought plan nine times out of ten. One had to place oneself in the hands of fate (meaning in the hands of Tyche) and trust to one’s own ****, and priests of Tyche were supposed to be showing their good fortune—and acceptance of bad fortune—as a confidence in the Lady and in themselves. Lady **** bid that each mortal chase his or her own unique goals—so long as they didn’t counter the express wishes of herself—and it was in this chase that the Lady aided her followers."

And from Greek Myth, Tyche granted mortals the ability to break the chains for fate and forge their own destiny (for good or ill).

Tyche is generally perceived as neutral in alignment, and a patron of adventurers.

In latter "Realms" lore Tyche (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyche:) was changed into: Tymora (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tymora) and her sister,Beshaba, (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beshabato) the goddess of misfortune, having been created when

Tymora is commonly revered by adventurers and others who rely on a mixture of **** and skill to achieve their goals. She is also a known ally of the demipower Finder Wyvernspur (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finder_Wyvernspur)

The Essay of why the word "Potato" is my favorite word:

Potato is my favorite word as it rolls off the togue and let me say it even when my tongue is disabled, or if my mouth is filled with chips, glass, gravel, a whole potato, and so on and so forth.
The potato is a starchy, tuberous crop from the perennial nightshade Solanum tuberosum. The word "potato" may refer either to the plant itself or to the edible tuber.[2] In the Andes, where the species is indigenous, there are some other closely related cultivated potato species. Potatoes were introduced outside the Andes region approximately four centuries ago,[3] and have since become an integral part of much of the world's food supply. It is the world's fourth-largest food crop, following maize, wheat, and rice.[4] The green leaves and green skins of tubers exposed to the light are toxic.

Wild potato species can be found throughout the Americas from the United States to southern Chile.[5] The potato was originally believed to have been domesticated independently in multiple locations,[6] but later genetic testing of the wide variety of cultivars and wild species proved a single origin for potatoes in the area of present-day southern Peru and extreme northwestern Bolivia (from a species in the Solanum brevicaule complex), where they were domesticated approximately 7,000–10,000 years ago.[7][8][9] Following centuries of selective breeding, there are now over a thousand different types of potatoes.[8] Over 99% of the presently cultivated potatoes worldwide descended from varieties that originated in the lowlands of south-central Chile, which have displaced formerly popular varieties from the Andes.[10][11]

However, the local importance of the potato is variable and changing rapidly. It remains an essential crop in Europe (especially eastern and central Europe), where per capita production is still the highest in the world, but the most rapid expansion over the past few decades has occurred in southern and eastern Asia. As of 2007 China led the world in potato production, and nearly a third of the world's potatoes were harvested in China and India.[12]

Yeah... i just really like potato.

...
