Final Fantasy I: Warriors of Light

"The world is veiled in darkness...
The wind stops...
The sea is wild...
And the earth begins to rot...
The people wait, their only hope: a prophecy...
After a long journey, four warriors arrive, each holding a crystal..."

It’s been three days since the unexpected betrayal of Garland and the kidnapping of Princess Sara. You were as shocked as anyone. Your brother had always been the Hero of Corneria, equal parts proud and humble, equally strong, courageous, and charismatic. You can’t be sure what happened, but neither can the rest of the kingdom’s military be sure that you aren’t an accomplice.

You haven’t been directly accused or demoted, but you’ve been under careful watch by your peers. You routinely hear whispers behind your back. Your assignments have been of less importance, as no one wants to take a risk that you might suddenly turn traitor as well.

You were guarding the castle gates with a few of your peers when a lone traveler stumbled to you along the path. Every couple weeks something like this happens: one of the few citizens who lives in the wilderness or on trade routes survives a vicious monster attack and barely makes their way to the castle. What’s strange is that this survivor, who calls himself Carl, claims to be a survivor from one of the northern provinces seeking aid from Corneria. If his claims are true, then he would be the first to contact Corneria from that far out in many, many years.

Strange though is the pendant he bears as proof of his identity, as it’s identical to your own. The other guards are immediately suspicious that the crystal is the symbol of some kind of conspiracy. You almost write it off as a coincidence, perhaps made by the same jeweler. While you and several guards are transporting the man to the castle, either as an ambassador or as a prisoner you can’t quite tell yet, when out of the shadows you are approached by a strange automaton who brandishes a crystal of his own and claims to know their purpose. The guards escort the automaton to share your fate as well, for better or worse.

And so the three of you are brought directly before the king and his advisors, the latter of which are conversing with a stranger, clad in elven garb, holding yet a fourth crystal. You are much a guard now as you are being guarded yourselves as you stand before the distraught king.

You hail from the small desert town of Damcyan where you are son to the village elder. The past few decades have been treacherous times for your home as giants and monsters made continual raids on your village. Though you’ve barely managed to survive this long, in recent years the attacks increased in intensity, forcing you and your brother to venture south to seek aid from your king.

It was a long and perilous journey, especially when you had to cross the river chasm dividing the continent, only the bare remains of a bridge post to mark where you should have crossed. Between the climb, the pursuing monsters at every turn, and the turbulent stormy weather that seemed to constantly hound you, you were separated from your brother. Battered and exhausted, you barely managed to stay conscious as you approached the gates of Corneria.

While you hoped for a swift response after the trouble it took to get here, the guards confronted you with suspicion, especially when the crystal pendant that was supposed to prove your status was met with confusion as one of the guards had another just like it. The rest was a blur as you were escorted to the throne room to plead your case before the king.

Yours has certainly been a unique life. One filled with fog where memories should be. As a member of Chainbeard’s pirate crew it seemed like you would be playing the part of a pirate for audiences forever, or at least until the theater closed down. Which could be any day now. The only reason your show has lasted for this long is that the citizens of Corneria were grateful for the distraction, but resources and spare time are increasingly scarce. Without even a single ship to Corneria’s navy, there was little prospect in terms of a backup career.

That all changed when, in the first time in decades, an elven ship made anchor at the Cornerian docks. Whether it was the ship itself or something aboard, something awoke in you, as some small parts of the fog started to lift. Something on board called to you and you followed. But you were never able to get close, not with the escort the castle sent for the elven envoy. Then something even stranger happened.

The same strange instinct that beckoned you towards the elven envoy instead directed your attention to the city gates. Somehow you knew something important was about to happen. Using the skills you learned from your scallywag mentor, you approached the guards as they were escorting what appeared to be a refugee to the castle. More importantly, the refugee and one of the guards both had crystals similar to the one embedded in your chassis.

You know that these Crystals are important; that they are, in part, the true purpose of your existence, not some bawdy seafaring tales. You can even vaguely recall bits of a prophecy involving them, though that part is still hazy much like the rest of your mind.

You had no choice but to reveal yourselves to the guards and get taken into custody yourself. Now you are brought before the king himself with the guard, the survivor, and another crystal bearer who was already there.

The Crystal you found in the forest glade filled your head with knowledge dating before even the ancient elven civilization was founded. The voice of the Crystal fills your mind with purpose, sometimes with faint, cryptic whispers, sometimes with images or feelings rather than specific words. Even when you showed the Crystal to the other elven scholars, they verified its power and its significance, but the voices belong to you and you alone.

The voice told you bits of the prophecy, that all four Crystals needed to be in Corneria, and only there could their destiny begin to be fulfilled. In addition, the king of Elfheim succumbed to a dark elf plot and fell into a deep sleep of which he cannot be revived. In desperation, you are part of an envoy sent on one of the last remaining elven ships to cross the treacherous Aldean Sea.

You and the other scholars and diplomats remained below deck while the crew fought off Chaos-worshipping pirates, sahagin, and strange sea aberrations.

Finally you reached the docks of Corneria. Its citizens were completely surprised just at the sight of your vessel, most having never seen an operating ship in their lifetime. With papers proving your status as an appointee of the elven council, you are escorted to the castle of Corneria, where you are brought before the king with the Crystal in your possession.

Before you can truly begin negotiations, an escort arrives with three identical Crystals and the strange people holding them.

You stand before King Cornelius XV on his throne. Far from the regal countenance of a king, one good look betrays how weary and distraught the ruler is. He's thin, pale, and wrinkled, even beyond a man of his age. There are a couple guards by the throne and several more surrounding you, though at the moment they seem only nervous, not hostile. If things went poorly, you made note of several other guard posts that could supply reinforcements should someone call for the guards.

The throne room has seen better days. Whatever could be liquidated or put to use for the citizens has been, and keeping up appearances isn't as important as making sure the townspeople are fed. As such there is a slightly visible layer of dust on the walls and ceilings with a few blank spots where portraits, banners, or statues once hung.

By his side, an adviser cautions him against reckless optimism. "My liege, we cannot jump to conclusions. These could just be baubles, their appearance a coincidence, or worse, an outright deception! We must tread carefully. For all we know, Garland might not have acted alone. His confederates could still be within the town, nay, the castle!"

His majesty raises an old, bony finger to silence the advisor. "Before making accusations of perjury, I would at least hear what they have to say." He turns to address the four of you in a weak, yet somehow authoritative voice. "Tell me. What has brought you to me in this hour, bearing these?" he asks each of you in turn, 'these' referencing the four inexplicably identical Crystals you each have.

``My Liege,'' Garbranth drops into a kneel, ``my brother Garland returned with this crystal from one of his journeys, a journey which changed him. He tried to destroy it, but was not able to, instead hiding it where he believed none would find it. I watched him in the act, retrieving it after he left. Based on his behavior, I suspect it might have some power to foil whatever it is he's plotting.

``Please, Your Majesty, give me leave to find my brother. I'm afraid he's not in his right hand, and I might be able to help him. If nothing else...'' Gabranth lowered his gaze, ``I will stop him.''

Peg's jaw swung open, and a tinny, hollow sounding voice began to emit from the automaton's mouth.

"Arr, me memory's so full of holes ye'd think it'd been blasted with grapeshot, but I'll share with ye what little I know. There be four great crystals, each corresponding to one o' the four elements - fire, water, earth, and air. These four crystals guide the magic and nature of the world like the four winds guide a ship on the ocean. And should any ill fate befall these crystals, arr, it be as if the whole world's gotten scurvy! I can remember when, twenty score years ago, the lights went out in the great crystal o' wind, and then some horrid disaster befell the people who made me, the Lufenians. They may as well 'ave sank to the depths of the sea for all you'll see o' them nowadays! Judgin' by what the world be like today, I suspect the other three crystals must be looking a little green in the gills as well.

But we don't need to give up the ship just yet! An old lore-lubber by the name of Lukahn made a great prophecy, saying that when things started to look dark, four warriors would gather here in this kingdom of Corneria, each holdin' a crystal. These crystals be not the great elemental crystals, ye ken, but they be more like torches which can relight the power o' the elemental ones, and that be why these warriors are called 'Light Warriors'. It is the destiny of those four to travel all the seas and lands o' the world, relighting the great Crystals.

Now, I know not if old Lukahn's prophecy be telling the truth, or if we be the Light Warriors spoken of. But I do know that when that fine elven vessel arrived, a mighty yearnin' sprung up inside me, and I felt meself drawn by the riptide of fate to meet here with these other three holdin' crystals. Wherever they go, so will I."

Carl waited respectfully while the overdramatic knight and the funny looking elf pirate have their speeches until finally he felt it appropriate to speak. He makes no initial effort to bow. "Your Magestry, I explore you to listen. I hail from the land of Damycan in the desserts of the high north. My father settled the town there when I was nothing but a wee speck in his glorious vision for the future. He built the town from, the ground up as a haven for hard working noble people. He cared for the town and it's people for years, raising me and my brother Harl while defending the town to the best of his ability. My brother and I set out many nights ago, my sense of time has been blurred. My father sent us to seek the guidance of your court. Normally I would never leave my village or father in their time of need but the impending threats had grown too strong for us to handle ourselves. So my father stayed to defend the town and my brother and I set off on a treacherous journey to reach your court. From the dastardly storms, to,the viscious beasts, the the perils and curves of the wicked witch we call earth, I was barely able to reach you and was separated from my brother. The only thing I have to show for my story is this glowing gem which my father sent with me. It means everything to me as it is the legacy my father built a history, a city, a people around but if it is the price that must be paid for your aid in assisting me and my people in our time of need them so be it. But I implore your assistance, and will pay any price. Just name it."

When he mentions the crystal, Carl dramatically holds it up for all to see, expecting much oo-ing and ah-ing.

It is at the end of the speech, once tears are adequately placed on his face, that Carl finally how's before the king. But not just bow, he prostrates himself to the point his forhead is touching the floor.

The king's eyes widen. "Garland is your brother?!" his majesty needs a second to collect his thoughts. "Yes... He did mention to me of a brother among the lower ranks. But how can I be sure you aren't in league with him? What do you know of Garland's betrayal? Surely if you were not his cohort you had to have had some kind of suspicion? Did you not report as such?"

Ouch. bad roll.

Neither the king or his advisor ooh or ah at the crystal. After all, it's the fourth one they've seen today.

"Your tale is impressive. Almost too impressive. I find it difficult to believe the only token of your nobility and proof of your identity is a crystal of which three identical ones have appeared before me, and none from Damcyan. Furthermore, we've had no contact with such outer provinces for many years. If by some miracle that any villages managed to survive, it would be easy for someone to claim to be an ambassador for a province or country when we have no way to verify that claim."

"Do you truly intend to tell me that the four of you, bearing these identical crystals, are strangers to one another? And so soon after the betrayal of my knight-commander? It is all very convenient. It is either fate... Or a deception. Tell me, why should I not suspect a conspiracy?"

``Yes, my king, he is my older brother. Garland's betrayal is just as much of a surprise to me as it is to anyone. More so, I'd say. Growing up, he always virtuous, a man of dignity and unbending principle.

``After one of his trips--I'm afraid he couldn't tell me where--he was different. He was behaving strangely, but I had no time to report my suspicions. He disappeared the next day with Princess Sara.

``I wish I could tell you more, but I'm afraid this is all I know. If it is your will, Your Highness, I will do everything I can to save him. More than anyone, I wish to save my brother from whatever evil has taken hold of him. And if I cannot save him, I will stop him.''

"Bandit!? This be not the raiment of some common land-lubbing cutthroat! Nay, I be wearin' the garb of a pirate, a scourge of the seas, a lord of the waves, a plunderer o' the treasure of kings and empires-"

Peg suddenly became aware of all the guards looking at it.

"Of course, ye do have to understand that I be not a real pirate. I only play the part of one for purposes o' entertainin' and educatin' audiences. Mayhap ye Majesty has heard of Captain Chainbeard's Marine Historical Society? I consider meself proud to be a member of his fine troupe, and if ye be doubtin' me honesty, arr, every one o' that crew would swear on their mother's grave that I'm the most honest metal man they ever did see.

Arr, old Lukahn might even have told me himself! But I do have a more likely theory. See how this crystal fits into me chest the same way a key fits into the lock of a treasure sort o' chest? I imagine me Lufenian makers must have known about the prophecy, and built me for the purposes o' its fulfillment, and if that imaginin' be true, it also be likely that they'd have writ the prophecy direct into me mind, so that I knew it from the moment I opened me eyes."

Jamros stands quietly aside, not saying anything but listening to the respective tales of the other crystal bearers. When the King demands proof of their character he considers mentioning the voices - but the risk of being labelled a lunatic prevents him from speaking up. Instead, he focuses on his crystal, attempting to telepathically draw answers from within it.

"You said the crystals must be gathered in Corneria, and here they are. Now will you not give the king a sign of our noble intent?"

The advisor is quick to respond. "Your majesty, I think I may recognize this... Peg. I know of this entertainment troupe. I've taken the young Princess Hilde to see it a few times. While it may be a bit... rough for a girl of her age and title, I can vouch that Sir Peg speaks the truth." He turns to address the 'pirate.' "My apologies for any offense. I certainly never would have expected you here under circumstances like these."

"Your majesty, perhaps there is an easy way to verify the Crystals and the ones who bear them. If we take Gabranth up on his offer, then the princess can be saved without further endangering our people by sending soldiers we already can't spare to rescue her. If they are truly Light Warriors, it should be a simple task."

The king nods. "What say you? Will you undertake the quest to save my daughter? Prophecy or no prophecy, I can promise any reward in my power for her safe return."

Jamros stands quietly aside, not saying anything but listening to the respective tales of the other crystal bearers. Instead, he focuses on his crystal, attempting to telepathically draw answers from within it.

"You said the crystals must be gathered in Corneria, and here they are. Now will you not give the king a sign of our noble intent?"

The Crystal is silent in your mind. The voice within is fickle with its advice, sometimes offering words, sometimes only images or vague moods, but for now it offers no guidance. Though it has guided you here, perhaps the voice of the Crystal has no need to influence the current situation. Perhaps everything is progressing exactly as it should be.

Carl looked around, utterly offended. "You cannot control the nobles of your own court, and you hold that against me? King Cornelius and his advisor are shocked at your outburst. The string of insults causes them to seethe with rage, along with the guards who tighten their grips on their weapons. "You come to my kingdom, covered in rags, to DEMAND aid from our precious few resources already spread thin, for a settlement you claim exists yet we have no record of or contact from for decades, and when I ask you for proof of your claim, you insult me in my own throne room?!" At a gesture, three guards surround Carl. It seems for right now the king is not associating his words with the other three crystal bearers. "Can you give me one good reason I shouldn’t have you thrown in the dungeons, or perhaps exile you to the wilderness from whence you came?!"

Carl's face saddens suddenly. He drops each of his weapons to the floor to show a sign of peace., following that by kicking them away from him before he drops to his knees.

"Your Majesty. I beg your forgiveness for the harshness of my words. I do not mean them. I speak out in fear and desperation. I have heard nothing but greatness of your kingdom, which is what led to my seeking your aid. I am sure you can understand the emotions bringing, about my poor words. You have just accused an innocent relative of a treacherous knight out of fear and desperation. You have lost your daughter and your most loyal soldier and your kingdom has fallen upon hard times and you have done everything you can to protect what you cherish. In this we are the same your majesty. I have lost my village and my family and if I cannot get them back, I will have nothing left in this world. So I plead for help and I lash out but sir, please know that it just the desperate acts of a desperate man. I will pledge my service to you and to rescuing your daughter and restoring your kingdom and bringing this Garland to justice if you just allow me the assurance that if we discover a way in which you can help me and my tiny little kingdom without bringing, harm unto your own. Accept my offer and I will be the most loyal subject you have ever reigned over. Refuse it and do me the mercy of taking my own blade and striking me down now so that later I must not face the horror of learning what terrors befell my kingdom due to my mispeaking to you."

There is an unsettling pause as you wait for the king's response. Finally he takes a deep breath. "These are... troubling times for us all. You have certainly traveled a long way along paths we've long since thought destroyed or otherwise obstructed. Some shortness is to be expected. I too, must apologize for treating you with such suspicion. As you know, recent events have called into question even the most loyal of friends." With another gesture, the guards stand down. "If you would undertake the task of rescuing my daughter, you would not only have my eternal gratitude, but the support of my kingdom and any reward under my power. I must admit, our military is understaffed and spread thin as is, but I'm sure there must be some way we can help."

"Please, you have had a long journey and must be tired and hungry. We have spare rooms in the castle, and I can arrange for a meal before you go. I do ask that you head out as soon as you are able. I do not know what that traitor has in store for my daughter."

Gabranth finally stands, ``My liege, thank you for giving me the opportunity to rescue your daughter and, hopefully, my brother. I swear if I do not return with your daughter, it is because I've lost my life in the attempt.''

The chain-clad knight turns to the mechanical curiosity, ``It's good that you don't need food. There's no time for a meal. I'm leaving immediately. With the bridge destroyed and no ships at port, there's only one direction my brother could've gone.''

Carl bows to the king. "Thank you my lord. I am ready to head out as soon as needed."

Running all day, barely sleeping at night, so when creatures were coming more often than rest I had to take flight. I have travelled the lands, that much is true, but my knowledge of them is little more than you. Beware though as I do know one thing, we need to watch out for the soldiers of the Goblin King. Chase us four nights on end, they gave us a fright. We barely escaped but put up a fight. I will guide you through as best that I can but I guarantee we face up with the clan. And one promise I make to you, no matter what else I may do, if we pass through the lands of that wicked Goblin shrine, he better watch out as vengeance will be mine..." He pauses, having clearly been caught up in what he was saying and then as if suddenly remembering his point, "But first and foremost we have a princess to save, though how I will love to put that beast in his grave."

"It be goblins we need to look out for, eh? Arr, those little green devils can be dangerous as any storm when they're in good numbers, and they almost always be in good numbers." A very soft whirring sound came from the robot's head as it took the new information into account.

"Here be me plan: When we set our course northwards, we stay just off the edge of any trail that has signs o' being frequented by any of the Goblin King's crews. It be a slow way to travel, but once we chance to see how many goblins be in a usual patrol, and what manner o' arms and armor they have, then we'll know if we can be more bold."

Cornelius XV claps his hands thrice. "Let bread and fish and wine be brought forth. The Warriors of Light deserve what scant comfort can be provided, 'ere their prophesied journey begins." Servants scurry about, making for the kitchen and dining hall to bring about the king's wishes. It is not long before the newly united quartet--Gabranth, Carl, Peg, and Garan--are seated along one side of the long, bare table that graces the vast hall where the kings of Corneria once feasted in splendor. Like the throne room, it shows signs of disuse and neglect, for the cares of the people have come before the comforts of the nobility in these hard times. As the table sits in simplicity against the grandiose construction of the vaulted hall, so too does the simple meal of brown bread and salted fish rest ensconced on fine china plates flanked with silverware. The wine is an ordinary vintage, hardly the refined taste of a king, but Cornelius raises his glass to his lips all the same and says nothing of the condescension.

Before the meal has gone on for long, one of the king's advisers comes to draw his attention. He speaks in a low whisper, scarcely audible above the clatter of silver on china and the clink of crystal on mahogany, but whatever limited color the king's face retained drains to waxy pallor as the message is conveyed. Cornelius sets down his knife and fork with a glimmer of ferocity coming to his eyes--eyes that look across the table to his guests. "A message has arrived from our adversary, demanding I abdicate the throne in exchange for my daughter's person."

It seemed like a waste for the robot to pretend at eating any of the food given the current conditions of the kingdom, but Peg also knew it would be rude to refuse such a generous meal - duels had been started over lesser affronts. Or, at least they had in the pirate tales the robot had spent much of its recent time listening to. Caught between these two concerns, Peg ended up simply staring down at the meal and gently poking at pieces of it with a fork, and was almost relieved for the distraction when the king spoke.

"Have the guards and any others who know of the messenger summoned to discuss the matter immediately after dinner." The poor functionary bows jerkily and retreats out the door, bowing once more before closing the portal behind himself.

Once the meal is finished, and the information is provided by the king's guards, Cornelius dispatches the four light warriors with his blessing and best wishes for success. The guards form ranks for a formal salute and send-off, but as the castle gates shut the quartet can feel the weight of responsibility settling about their shoulders.

It is a little past noon, and the sky is clear and warm, as it always is this time of year. Looking to the south, across the local farms, one can see the town harbor and the sparkling sea beyond. To the north, rolling hills thick with trees stretch out beyond the king's current, feeble reach. It is in this direction, the guards had said, that the messenger departed--and toward which, if Carl's tale is to be believed, is the shrine of the Goblin King.

The town of Corneria is moderately sized and well fortified, but times are tough and there are few goods and services to be had--and those for somewhat inflated prices as well.

Do you:
(A) Head quickly northward to seek out the shrine?
(B) Search diligently for tracks of the strange messenger?
(C) Patrol near the town and see if you might encounter any of the goblin king's servants that might know of this matter?

``What say you, Peg, Carl, Garan? Shall we stick with the plan of pursuing the messenger?''

"I have one suggestion. In my time in Grove Nyfed I learned to call upon a minor spirit of the forest and bind it into the form of a small animal. Now that we are outside of the city, I could attempt to find such a spirit that would be willing to give aid to us and give it the form of a hawk. Having a pair of eyes in the air could help us locate a clue. However, the summoning process will cost us an hour."

"Arr, that sounds like a mighty useful trick. Could ye summon a beast that be good with its nose? I heard one o' the King's guards say that Garland's messenger had a sort of scent about it. Mayhap your spirit could pick up a bit o' that scent from the messenger's scroll."

Garan groaned when Peg made his suggestion. "If only I had thought of summoning a spirit while we were speaking with the King! We could have asked for the scroll then. And now that I think of it, there are a number of divination spells that can be attempted if you have access to something that had been in your target's possession. I do not yet have the skills to perform such divinations, but perhaps I will learn over the course of our mission. If we were to keep the scroll with us, I might be able to make further use of it in the future. If I perform the spell, we will have an hour. Maybe one of us could strike back and humbly ask if we might have the scroll? In the meantime, the final two could either search for tracks or goblins in the area."

Garan's eyes widened as he finished that last sentence. "There is a second thing that I could try. I could cast a spell to allow me to communicate with the animals living in this forest. They would not be able to tell us much, but if there are goblins in the area, they would probably know about them. I doubt that they could tell us anything of significance about the messenger, though. This would take me a further twenty minutes. Personally, I favour attempting to track the messenger. There is no guarantee that any goblins in the area would know anything of Garland, and I do not wish to tarry too long here and allow the trail to grow cold."

Have I prepared my spells yet? I don't think so. Garan will prepare the following spells for this day. I've noted it on my spellcasting sheet.

Peg retrieved the crossbow Garan had dropped and returned it to its owner. While listening to what its companions had to say, the robot moved over to the body of the axe-bearing goblin, and carefully checked the corpse for any useful equipment or supplies. This searching was not interrupted when Peg's turn to speak came.

"Arr, that was some fine sword-swingin' and spell-slingin' there. But let's not get too cocky. Two of 'em got away, and I'll bet ye all o' their mates will hear about us yarely. The trail may lead north, but that be where the goblins came from. I'd not like to camp too close to their village or base when night falls. Mayhap we should set our course north-east for a league or two before we make camp, and try to regain the trail when the sun rises."

What material was the head of the goblin's axe made out of, and does it appear to be designed to be wielded by a creature of a goblin's size? Also, as Peg examines the gear the goblin was carrying, it'll try to look for other clues as to the level of technological achievement attained by the local goblins - do they appear to be more like a neolithic hunter-gatherer tribe, or do the items found appear to have been produced by specialized laborers from a more complex society?

Garan grimaced. "To be perfectly honest, I am not confident that we could ever find the trail again should we leave it here and attempt to circle around. The land here is quite rough, so it isn't as though we are following any type of road or even a path. If we leave the trail behind, I wouldn't have the slightest idea of where to look for it again. We could spend days and never pick it up, and the more time that passes, the less likely that there would be enough of a scent for Keiko to follow."

Garan turned to look in the direction that the goblins fled to. "I understand your concern, but I am hoping that the goblins decide that we are not worth the trouble. They were clearly cowards to flee so quickly after attacking us. But it would be wise not to linger here, just in case they do return in greater strength. If we take good advantage of the remaining daylight, they'd have about as good of chance of stumbling upon us as we would of rejoining the messenger's trail. They could return here and try to follow our trail, but that would leave them hours behind us and trying to follow a trail in the dark."
