Paladin of Ego (Ex-Paladin/Paladin Archetype)

Paladins that lose their divine mandate as paladins may find that their powers are partly restored by the sheer willpower and force of personality that enabled them to function as a holy warrior to begin with. However, bereft of divine agency, these abilities are not where they once were, and a paladin's belief in their own infalibility is easily shaken, rendering the abilities of a paladin of ego more easily disrupted or shrugged off by those with an equal or greater will.

Selfish Mending: A paladin of ego, can only heal other creatures for 1d4 per two paladin levels. A creature healed by a paladin of ego may only benefit from a single mercy at a time. A paladin of ego’s Selfish Mending does no damage to undead creatures. This alters the paladin's Lay on Hands.

Blissful Ignorant: A paladin of ego is not bound by a formal code of conduct nor restricted to a particular alignment, but as a consequence lack the same presence and protection provided to most that would call themselves paladins. This removes the paladin's alignment requirement, code of conduct and associates and Aura of Good.

Smite Xenos (Su): Not bound to a code of ethics, a Paladin of Ego's smite evil becomes equally effective against all foes, regardless of their alignment, but deals only half damage to foes with a greater mental fortitude. The subject of a Paladin of Ego's smite may make a Will save (DC 10+1/2Paladin Level+ Cha Mod). On a critical failure, or against creatures subject to the Paladin of Ego's Aura of Glory, deal two points of damage per paladin level. This replaces a paladin's smite evil ability.

Detect Weakness: A paladin of ego sees the world through their own lens. Rather than detecting a particular alignment, a paladin of ego gains the ability to detect weakness. This functions as a paladin's detect evil ability, with the following adjustment. Creatures with more than double the hit dice of a paladin of ego detect as overwhelming, creatures with equal hit dice as strong, creatures with half a paladin of ego's hit dice as moderate and any lower than this detect as faint. A paladin of ego's Detect Weakness ability is blocked by any impediment to line of sight, including blindness, illusions, terrain and soft cover. This replaces a paladin's detect evil ability.

Selfish Rebuke At fourth level, a paladin of ego gains the ability to spend two uses of their lay on hands ability to deal damage to an enemy, as an antipaladin’s touch of corruption, dealing 1d8 damage per two paladin levels. A creature subjected to a paladin of ego’s Selfish Rebuke may make a will save (DC 10+1/2Paladin Level+Cha Mod) for half damage. This ability does not heal undead creatures. This replaces a paladin’s divine health ability.

Cruel Rebuke:Beginning at 4th level, a paladin of ego gains the ability to apply cruelties as an antipaladin when using their selfish rebuke. A creature that saves against the selfish rebuke is not affected by a cruelty. They gain one cruelty at 4th level, and at every level where they gain a mercy, they also gain access to a cruelty. In addition, by expending an additional use of selfish mending when making a selfish rebuke, a paladin of ego may choose to inflict two cruelties of different levels, dealing no damage. This replaces a paladin’s channel energy.

Aura of Bravado (Su): Starting at 3rd level, each ally within 10 feet of the fallen paladin gains a +1 morale bonus on saving throws against fear effects. This bonus increases every 5 levels thereafter, to a maximum of +4 at 18th level. This aura immediately ends if the paladin of ego fails a save against fear, and returns after the paladin has rested for 8 hours. This replaces the paladin's Aura of Courage.

Demoralize: Starting at 4th level, when you strike an enemy as a swift action you may attempt to demoralize that enemy with the intimidate skill, using your ranks in intimidate or your paladin level, whichever is higher. This replaces a paladin’s spellcasting.

Divine Bond: A paladin of ego may only select a weapon bond. In addition, while incapable of applying either the axiomatic or holy weapon enhancements to her weapon, a paladin of ego is capable of applying the vicious, wounding or vorpal weapon enhancements. This alters the paladin's Divine Bond.

Aura of Impudence(Su): Starting at 8th level, each ally within 10 feet of the paladin of ego gains a +2 morale bonus on saving throws against charm effects. This bonus increases every 5 levels thereafter, to a maximum of +4 at 18th level. In addition, a paladin of ego gains the benefit of the slippery mind advanced rogue talent. This bonus vanishes if the paladin of ego fails a save against a charm effect. This replaces the paladin's Aura of Resolve.

Aura of Glory: At 11th level Paladin of Ego adds +1 to any morale bonus they receive. In addition, they apply 1/2 of the bonuses their auras grant (other than this one) as penalties to enemies within a 40 foot radius that fail a will save (DC=10+Paladin Level+Cha Mod. This replaces a paladin's Aura of Justice.

Aura of Supremacy (Su): At 14th level, a paladin of ego’s weapons bypass half the damage reduction of enemies affected by their Aura of Glory. This replaces aura of faith.

Aura of Censure (Su): At 17th level, a paladin of ego gains spell reisstance equal to half their paladin levels. Additionally, each ally within 10 feet of her gains a +4 morale bonus on saving throws against compulsion effects. This replaces the paladin's Aura of Righteousness.

Self-Absorbed (Su): At 20th level, a paladin of ego's spell resistance increases to equal to their paladin levels + cha modifier. Additionally, when she uses smite xenos and successfully strikes an outsider that possesses an alignment subtype, the outsider is also subject to a banishment, using her paladin level as the caster level (a paladin of ego’s person automatically count as an object that the subject hates). In additional, whenever the paladin of ego uses selfish mending to heal themself, they heals the maximum possible amount.

Ex-Paladins

An ex-paladin may, at a GM's discretion convert their levels of paladin to the Paladin of Ego archetype instead of seeking redemption. In addition, Paladins of Ego that become corrupt or evil may find that their exploits earn the attention of the same malevolent forces that imbue antipaladins with their own abilities. A paladin of ego sufficiently steeped in wickedness may become an antipaladin, trading their levels in this archetype with their new class.
