In the original AD&D Oriental Adventures, the spirit folk races were all tied to a particular forest, river, or sea, depending on which sub race was chosen. Their life force was literally tied to the site, suffering as that site suffered.

In 3.0, that restriction seems to be removed. Did they remove that and make the race more accessible, or am I missing something?

Thanks

They're also printed in Unaproachable East as well, although it's not the exact same 3 as the OA version. Regardless, untying them from the natural places they're associated with makes them more free to adventure. The fluff in for them seems very much like the fluff for half-elves in a core campaign. They have mixed human & nature spirit heritage, but don't feel a strong home in either world so they wander.
