It's the 11th of December in the year of our lord 1879. You've been on this train for at least a day and you've noticed the other travelers with you. Guns are allowed in this car and you certainly aren't the only one carrying. By now you know what the others in your car look and act like, but you probably don't know their names.

A few minutes ago you noticed an odd rattling. The staff of the Denver-Pacific must have noticed it as well, for the conductor in your car flipped a hidden switch and lowered armored shutters over your windows. He then flipped over a seat covering a secret compartment and pulled out a Gatling rifle. With a smile and a wink, he now takes up a position at the front of the car near a gunport you hadn’t noticed earlier. You peek out the narrow slits in the armored windows. Mounted figures stand along a rise to your right.
Indians!
As you ready yourself for trouble you hear a deafening screech, like nothing you’ve ever heard before. There’s no doubt it’s the locomotive’s wheels grinding on the tracks—the brakes thrown so hard you smash into the seat in front of you.

There’s pain, a dizzy sensation, and then the whole world tumbles around you, slamming your body up and down like beans in a maraca.

Everything goes dark for a while.

Then you hear screaming. Not the screaming of your fellow passengers though—more like the howls of the damned. Ghost rock. You’d know that sound anywhere. As you try to clear your vision you feel the heat of the burning ore nearby. You force your eyes open and find yourself lying in the shattered debris of the rail car. In fact, you can see the entire train sprawled along the tracks like some infernal iron snake.

Surrounding you are piles of burning ghost rock and the mangled corpses of your fellow passengers. Surely this is Hell. A man runs by, screaming and blazing with flame. He stops in front of you and three arrows slam into him from the train’s right. The Indians are picking off the survivors!
What do you do?

*snip*

Jack rolls over onto his front sluggishly, getting his hands underneath him and tries to rise into a half-crouch, orienting himself to where the Native Americans were and trying to take cover behind the wreckage, fumbling for his rifle to maybe provide some return fire, give the other survivors a chance to get their bearings and mount a resistance, grunting in pain from moderate burns along his arms and chest...

[roll0] (was a 1 on 1d8) [roll0] for my Bullard Express to target the closest one I can draw a bead on.

In addition, he's going to shout at the wreckage to try and rouse the other survivors, if there are any, to get their heads down and try to do what they can to fight back.

"Mon dieu" Flip grunts as he finds himself laying sprawled amongst the chaos. He moves about a bit to see if his body still reacts as it should. Bumps and bruises, but he is relieved to find all his limbs attached. Blood trickles over his forehead into the sand. He raises his head but when he sees the man getting plugged with arrows he instinctively lowers it again. Slowly he scans the area for a hiding place or other survivors.
He sees a man clumsily firing off a bullet, shouting around. Flip can't make out the words but he's pretty sure he isn't singing anybody a sweet lullaby.
He rolls over to take cover behind a chunk of metal next to the burning man. Flip studies the man who is shouting and shooting a second and decides that he needs to make use of his courage while he is still alive. Who knows? He might take some Indians with him on his way out.
Flip pulls out a chicken feather and hold it in the burning mans flames. He inhales the smoke coming from the feather in through his nose and blows it out through his mouth towards the man.

Flip casts the Raise trait (Agility) at Jack.

Winnifred pulls herself up from underneath the wooden wreckage that had been thrown over her as she looks around blood flows down her face wetting her hair and getting her left eye. Winnifred standing now taking in the scene about her, the chaos of the wreckage, the horror of the dead bodies, and the chest griping fear as arrows take down a fleeing man. Winnifred spins out of shock when she hears the report of a gun turning to see two men standing among the wreckage. One of the men is firing a gun while shouts the other one, she has no idea what the other man is doing, maybe in the derailment he hit his head and is now suffering form some kind of brain trauma.

Having assessed the situation Winnifred's mind makes a list of actions, first self protections, then arming herself, and lastly provide aid and help to those in need which already included one possible head injury but seeing as he was a walking wounded he would be low on her list of persons to attend to. Winninfred winches inside as she rips her already tattered dress even more, it had been her best dress as she figured if you going to be ran out of town do it in fashion, but the torn sleeve now reviles a forearm long bracelet with wires, nobs and gauges. Winnifred goes about working on her protective shielding device, patent pending of course, and from her bracelet come a ghostly green glow and a sound like rushing wind through metal pips as the device starts working, hopefully without blowing up this time.

Richmond huddles up to a wall while muttering curses. It takes him a moment to get over the initial shock, but seeing the burning man being shot by arrows snaps him back to reality. He fumbles for his gun. He had bought it to look the part, like most of his clothes it was just to look like one of the heroes from a dime novel. He had never even fired it, or checked if it worked. Looking over his cover he fires it at the first indian he sees.

Jack's shot goes off without a hitch, but it still manages to stop short of the intended target. He must be dizzier from the crash than he thought. Richmond's bullet, however, blows through one of the charging attackers causing him to flip and collapse in a bloody heap. Meanwhile, Flip's contact with the Loa and Winnifred's device both function properly.
The leader of the war party shouts something in a language you don't speak, but you're sure its nothing good. The leader fires an arrow at Jack, while two of the others let their arrows fly at Richmond. The fourth one charges with his tomahawk at Winnifred. He's shouting something y don't understand at her.
Jack's shooting roll went off, but it failed to do enough damage. Richmond did enough to wound him several times over. Both powers went off fine, mark off power points.

Flip doesn't wait to see if the man he just tried to bless is on top of his game now. He desperately scans the wreckage for his luggage. There was one thing he forgot about in all the commotion and if it was near, they could be in big trouble.
He spots his cane, a black walkingstick with a silver skull on top, and backpack close by. That figures since they were on his person when this all went down. His bag is torn and smoldering but near enough. It's just the chest.. Where is the bloody chest?
He crawls over to his cane and picks it up. At that moment an Indian wielding a tomahawk charges a woman near Flip. He is forced to draw the blade out from the swordcane and waits for the right moment to stab the Indian in the back.
As he steps up and lunges at the Indian, in the back of his mind he can't stop thinking of the chest. Why the hell did he promise that bartender to take the dynamite with him to his brother in San Fransisco?!

As the Indian's tomahawk comes swinging down it stops only inches away from Winnifred's face as it seem to hit a wall of force with a flash of green light. Winnifred lets out a surprised scream as she pulls her Derringer out from the bag still tied to her left wrist and lets of a quick shot before stumbling back almost falling while at the same time a man come out of nowhere with a cane sword of all thing and take a reckless swing at the attacking Indian.

Not wanting to chance shooting her, he runs into the indian with all his force, trying to throw the man to the ground.

Jack starts to spit on the ground in disgust at his poor marksmanship, knowing from experience that wasn't a lethal shot, and that he'd have to hike up there to finish it, or risk the leader getting away, finding some buddies, and coming back for revenge. He attempts to work the lever on the rifle again, and chamber a fresh cartridge, feeling an arrow graze his cheek, opening a shallow cut and causing Jack to fight his instinct to duck back down into cover and stay put...

[roll0]

(If it fails, end turn, if it succeeds, proceed)

The 'gentleman' would then proceed to draw a bead the native who had shot at the lady, figuring there was little he could do to the one grappling Richmond without risking harming him. If nothing else, the arrow had certainly taken some of the false bravado and showboating out of him, and reminded him that one stray arrow could put him down just the same as one shot could to the natives.

It's not like Flip hasn't seen fights before. He's been there, gambling cheats getting run out.. Drunk bar brawls. He knows the sound of a crushed jaw or a broken bottle. It's just that none of the busted noses he's witnessed could ever prepare him for the violence right before him.
The elbows and knees, the biting and the wrestling. Two strangers locked in a death struggle. All the while arrows and bullets fly and somewhere in this hell of burning metal is a bomb.

He missed the lunge towards the Indian mostly because he only carries it for show, and surprise effect. Intimidation really.. But he also missed because his eye registered the familiar shape just as he tried to stab. It was the chest! He drops the sword and runs towards the wooden chest, grabbing it by the rope handle. He immediately sprints straight towards the remaining Indians not thinking for a second about what he's actually doing. This is pure adrenaline, reactionary behavior at it's best. It the magic moments where the impossible has a chance to succeed.
Or so Flip hopes..

So.. Yeah. I guess Flip is charging the Indians with a chest of el-cheapo dynamite.

The two standing unhindered warriors take off. They know a fight they'll lose and dynamite and ghost rock fire is not really their bailiwick. They shout something in Western Apache and run for their lives. Then Jack's shot takes down one of them. If anyone wants to take care of the last one., you can get three free shots at them. The grappled one falls limp in Richmond's arms, officially giving up. The leader lets out an acrid hiss before saying, in accented English, her voice twinged with regret and blood loss, "We surrender. Kill us if you will, white men."

Winnifred Hartman was no monster, even though many people believed she was, and therefor she didn't shoot at any of the fleeing Indians, anyways there was not much her little Derringer was going to be able to do. So instead she turned to the wreckage and started searching for any survivors, surprisingly the twisted dead bodies didn't seem to bother the woman in at all as she moved about the carnage of the ruined train in her search. Winnifred called out as she walked hoping that she can find anyone still alive.

Flip puts down the chest as soon as he realizes what he's doing. He sets it down carefully and gingerly walks a few steps away from it. When the leader cries out he looks at her. He walks over to her with a casual swag and makes sure there's no weapons in reach for her to attack with.
He shows her only the white of his eyes, a trick he picked up to put some drama to his tarot-readings.

"I am not white, redskin, and to kill you would be the least I could do to you." He laughs as if possessed, another of his parlor tricks. He shakes his head as if taking back control and looks the leader in the eyes.
"Tell me, Indian. Was it worth it?" He asks in a more normal tone of voice, his usual thick Creole accent.

"This one's alive! Bring some rope to tie her up!" He shouts back to the people milling about the wreckage.

" 'Scuse me pardner, the lady and I have a debt to settle." Jack claims, noting that the native american leader's clothes seem to be a fairly sturdy material, and he tries to butcher a section of cloth from it without unduly exposing her, knowing the odds of rope surviving the initial explosion, the crash, and then the fire of their train were slim to none, and they might not even find any right away. Jack was firmly in gruff-cowpoke mode and was in the business of getting this woman bound before she found some fresh new horror to visit upon their existence as an act of spite.

[roll2][roll3][roll4][roll5][roll6][roll7]

While Jack isn't so uncouth as to abuse an already-defeated foe, he's certainly not above making darn sure her bindings are PLENTY tight enough that she has no hope of escaping, and he can only hope Flip can keep her sufficiently oppressed while he works on the bindings.

The leader snarls at Flip. "You are not of our Dine'é. And yes, it was well worth it, Góshé. You survived the spirits' attempt to kill you." As Jack starts tying her up, she motions with her head. "My man over there had rope on him. Feel free to tie my up. Though, if you aren't going to kill me, use one of his bandages on my leg. I'd rather not die from my injuries."
As Winnifred looks around, she notices the obvious thing. The train derailed because the ground opened up beneath it. The hole is unlit, but from the sunlight pouring in, you can see railroad tracks placed at the bottom of the hole. They seem to extend for a while in a tunnel.

Jack nods at the Native American woman, "Rightly so, Miss. If we wanted you to die, a bullet would be a sight kinder." Looking around at the group, he asks the assembled men and woman, "Does anyone have a knack for healing? I can put 'em down, but I'm afraid I can't get 'em back up half as well." He admits, having come to terms that past digging out bullets and VERY basic medical tasks, he wasn't particularly useful in that regard. "Now, Miss, What's the big idea with taking pot shots at us? I reckon none of us had a bone to pick with you until you started trying to pick us off as we stumbled out of the wreckage..." Jack asked before almost lazily taking aim at the retreating native man, knowing full well that there wasn't a man alive who could outrun the finger of death once it was comin' for them.

Winnifred walks over to the firing lawman and the bound Indian woman, who seems to have had her cloths torn to shreds leaving her very indecent exposed, not that she was dress in any since of fashion to begin with, but then who was Winnifred to judge she preferred her pants and blouses to a fancy dress any day. Winnifred bends down to take a look at the woman's injuries as she talk openly to anyone who will listen, and when it came to men who it was always a shoot int he dark if they would hear a woman out or not. "Just so you know I believe I found the cause of the derailment if you are all wondering, and if these Indians did it I am very impressed but I doubt they did, I believe they may have just been opportunistic in their attack."

Now turning to the Indain woman she continued, "I'm going to take a look your wounds if you don't mind, it may hurt a bit as I'm not use to working on the living, my experiences is dealing with the study of the body is normally dead ones, but I thank I have a rude grasp of the concepts involved in keeping one's life fluids and such inside the body where they belong."

Winnifred once more remembering something turns to look over her shoulder at the once well dressed dark skinned gentleman she had noticed earlier with the head trauma, "Oh sir once I'm done with attending as best as I can to this woman please let me have a look at you head, I do believe you are suffering from some form of head injury, those can be quite serious."

"Mon-Cherie, there's plenty of time for that when we make it out. You can inspect a lot more than just my head." He winks at Winnifred and looks around.

"How far away from the next station are we anyways?"

A hot cartridge is ejected from Jack's long-gun and spins through the air prettily as Jack begins to loads 4 new rounds into his gun, leaving him with 11 loaded, 85 loose for 96 total. He begins to look through the sand at his feet for the 2 he'd just fired, hoping to recover them if the brass was still good for potential retooling. "And there's plenty of time for THAT once we've taken care of the wild-woman, and have some sort of a plan for what we're going to do, since we don't know when we'll be able to restock on supplies when you run out. Maybe you brought enough, and I know I brought enough, but I doubt pretty boy over there did." He glances pointedly at Richmond.

"That said, what are we going to do about the hole in the tracks? You guys want to go down there and see what did the train in, or would you rather keep going and hope we make it to the next town before we freeze our fingers clean off?"

Richmond glares at Jack for a moment when he calls him 'pretty boy'. "I expect that when we don't arrive at the next station in time they will send out a search party. The prudent thing would be to wait for them. And I am quite certain that between the restaurant caboose will have what we need to get by until then."

"I guess that's your call partner. There are a bevy of things out here that can get to us a fair mite faster than the nearest posse can, the least of which was the bush-whacking natives. I'm of the mind to strike out for the nearest town along the track, since they're likely to follow the tracks back from the other direction if they are comin', and if they're not, then we're guaranteed to find someplace eventually." Jack doesn't much care WHAT the pretty boy thinks, and indeed privately thinks that he's the most like to be dead weight in a fight, though perhaps he has other talents that Jack simply isn't aware of yet.

"I reckon you're welcome to tag along, if you'd like. As a lawman, I'm duty-bound to see civilians to safety in these sort of situations, but I expect you'll pull your weight when it comes to setting up camp and digging latrine trenches, and see to your own food. The same applies to the rest of y'all as well." He meets the eye of Filip, and then Winnifred, and finally looks down at their captive. "And I suppose I'll try to bring you in for questioning, treat you civil and everything, which is better than you'd do for us, no doubt."

The leader recoils from Winnifred's attempts to help. "You want her to treat me? The one whose devices violate the spirits?" she looks down at her gaping wound, "but I am not so hidebound as to refuse you saving my life." Winnifred fairly successfully bandages her leg. "Thank you, Góshé."

At the mention of digging latrines, you can notice Richmonds face recoil slightly from disgust. You cannot be sure if it's the thought of physical labor or doing his business in the wilds for probably the first time. "If it will get us closer to the rescue team I'll come along," he mutters.

He starts looking around for his suitcase, thinking on the conversation. Perhaps I could pay one of these guys to do my share of the work.

Winnifred has not idea what the Indian woman called her and in truth she doesn't really care nor did she wait for the woman consent to treat her wounds, it very really dawned on her to do so, it was a problem to be solved and she solved it that simple. In that case Winnifred didn't quite pick up on the Flip's comment and it sexual incantations, but instead said, "When we have time I will do so sir, sorry I have yet to get your name sir, mine is Winnifred Hartman."

Once she had made her introduction and knew the that woman she just treated would not bleed out Winnifred decided it was time to fully arm herself and so she went back to where she had pulled her self from the wreckage to find her bags. Once found she pulls out her bags and then the purple cloth covered rifle and she then unwraps the Evans Old Model Sporter leaver action repeating rifle.

Winnifred comes back to the group with her bag over a shoulder on a large strap and a rifle held in hand and take a small curtsy as she say, "Well meet gentlemen as stated before my name is Winnifred and I am a woman of science and learning so we are somewhat outside of my field of expertise when it come to wilderness survival, I will deffer to anyone who has a clear sound understanding of these things."

"Well... someone's taking a piss, I swear." He swears in the fashion of his homeland, "We'll stick to the tracks and hope we don't have to do much 'surviving' at all. Let's go ahead and do a supply check before we set out to check how much rations we have, make sure we bring as much as we can comfortably carry so we don't starve..." He squares up against Richmond first, "What's your food situation like? Looking for hard-tack and dry rations, stuff that is portable and will keep for a bit."

Turning to Winnifred after addressing Richmond, "Jack Delancey. Agent of the Union on special detachment, hunting a criminal on the run from the law. Were we in more pleasant circumstances, I'd greet you more properly. For now though, I'm on the clock, and crime doesn't rest. It would be preferential to dispense with unnecessary pleasantries and move while it remains light and we are all well-rested."

"I'm afraid I have little to add," Richmond sighs, stepping back and away from Jack. "I was perfectly happy dining from the restaurant caboose. But I guess that food's free for the taking... under the circumstances."

"It's fine quality food, of that there's no argument. But it won't stay good for long once we start moving, and only certain things are weight-efficient enough to be worth bringing. Maybe if we had a horse, or some kind of cart it'd be a different story... but carrying it on our backs isn't going to happen, unless you're willing to carry it yourself, and give up some of your other gear to make room." Jack claps Richmond on the shoulder, trying to make up for being a bit rude earlier. "If we could stay here and wait for help, your plan would totally work though." Jack smiled a little at the younger man.

Flip, who just found his top-hat and put it on straight, turns to the group.
"The name's Philip LeGrange. But you fine folk can call me Flip. I too was planning on shelling out some coin for food under-way. Not that I have much on me in the ways of money mind you. I have tobacco with me though.. And some of the fine stuff. One bottle to wake up the demons that stir within, and one bottle to sooth them." He tips his hat gentlemanly.

The leader rolls her eyes. "You plan to bring me through the mountains to your nearest town? I would like to request a bullet through the head then. I'm not sure if you have noticed, but you have no horses and I am tied up. And one of you has a limp. And we are in the mountains." She gestures with her head to the clouds. "I do not think the weather will stay calm for long either. If you untie me though, I could take you to my camp."

Winnifred looks to the wounded woman, who seems to have been in charge of the attack on the train when she said that she was willing to take them to her camp wondering if it was an attack but more she was curious about just what kind of camp the Indian woman may have and what could be there. Winnifred turned back to the group of men and asked, "Maybe it would be more prudent to check out this camp and see just what supplies can be salvaged there, what is your gentlemen's opinion?"

"She just tried to kill us," Richmond moves closer to Winnifred. "Should we really believe she'll offer food and lodgings after we killed her men." Despite standing only a few feet away from her, he addresses his comment to Winnifred.

"Well. I'm alright with letting bygones be bygones in the interest of mutual survival, if she is. I doubt her offer is genuine, given that she DID just say that she would have attacked us again, given the chance. Seems a bit ominous for her to go from that to inviting us into her home. I think I'm JUUUUST fine with taking my chances in the cold, or even underground." Jack states, pointing out that she had been decidedly less than friendly thus far.

As the bickering continues, there is a sudden gust of frigid wind. It's dawning on you just how much colder it is out here than it was in the train. But at the same time, it feels like it's actively getting colder. If anything, you'd swear the temperature dropped a couple of degrees in the last few minutes. There's another blast of that wind, the one so Arctic that it chills your very bones. Only this time you swear you hear the wind whispering to you. You can barely make it out, but it sounds something like, "Weeeeendigoooo"

Everyone make me a knowledge (occult) roll. If you do not have the skill and are not from a part of the world that gets heavily snowed in, you may not make the check.

Richmond can feel the chill right down to his bones. He tightens his jacket around him"I think you might be right Mr. Delancey. I'm all for finding shelter as soon as possible."

Jack can feel the shiver go right through his bones, and not entirely from the cold either... "Seems like a mighty fine idea indeed. Better even than I thought it sounded at first. There's no telling if the caves truly are the best bet, but I can guarantee you it's better than standing around here. Let's move, now." This time Jack doesn't wait for a reply, and immediately begins advancing toward the underground caverns. He certainly wasn't afraid no sir, just... anxious. Anxious is a good word for it, yes sir indeedy!

"I don't recommend lollygagging either. Shoot the woman, or bring her with, but the cruelest thing you can do is leaving her here alive." He calls over his shoulder, scrambling to find his pack in the wreckage of the train and get ready to set out. Before he goes, he does take a moment to go over the wreckage of the train, looking for anything that might be useful, whether items, or survivors.
