Actually, earlyer in the string, we decided that he's smart, but is very bad at english. After all he most likley learned Orc before english. He has an "incompleat" voabulary, and has problems forming correctly formed sentances.

I took 3 years of Russian, I know how hard it is to not sound stupid in another language.

first off, linux is used for about 30-90% of the web servers out there (depending on who you get to do your survey) so it's a MUCH bigger target than anybody's home PC. So your argument falls flat on it's face (as it's much better to crack/break the server than all the home machines that connect to it, because then you don't get as restricted bandwidth limits). Also, there was a (somwhat tougne-in-cheek) effort to get windows malware to run on Linux through wine (the windows not-an-emulator), and due to the nature of Linux, the people trying this could not get any permenant harm done to their machines, and they were TRYING to get the malware to work http://os.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=05/01/25/1430222&from=rss.

secondly, why GNU+Linux is more secure: windows was desinged for a single (home) user, not connected to the hostile internet, and has not fundamentally changed how it handles security (every program has full rights to the system, admittadly XP improves this a bit, but toggle compatability mode on and you're back to the old system), everything M$ tells you about is an add on the the basic system, not built into the core concepts the way it is with UNIX based systems (which were desinged for mass networks right from the start). M$ CANNOT afford to fix this properly (hence compatability mode), because it would break just about every program written for the OS, and if they do that then they lose the lock-in factor, and that means they lose their monoply, which means they lose their monopoly pricing, and would have to actually compete fairly (which they might not be able to do anymore, given that GNU+Linux/Mac OSX are gaining market share on them even with the lock-in), which would mean price cuts for every bit of software they rent (M$ doesn't sell software, read the EULA you got with it), and that would mean they'd probably stop their loss products (everything except windows OS and M$ Office) to stop the money flowing away quite so fast.

is a good article to start with (yes it's on a pro-linux site, but it's a strange thing, you'll find that Linux people tend to give you more facts and less spin than M$ people, and will generally answer your questions (unless they think you're just an astroturfer, and even then you'll possible get some good answers), rather than avoid them and give non-anwsers (see any time M$ has given a public Q&A session about Vista DRM, etc... and I'm not talking about the audience plants asking easy questions)).

Another fun fact, M$'s own servers ran Linux for a while, I think they were being hit by people exploiting the new OS at the time. Now what does that tell you about the faith they have in their own OS?

Due to it's open source nature, at a rough guess Linux alone has had more man-hours spent in development than all the M$ products put together (taking into account that Linux is based on MINIX, a varient of UNIX, and not counting all the time spent on any non-critical applications, of which there are thousands avaidible for free), as Linux is based on technology that was in the refinement stage when M$ wasn't even a company yet (M$'s first product was a UNIX varient that they bought, repackaged, and rented on to third parties)


I will admit I run a dual boot machine (Fedora Code 5/M$ XP Pro SP2) but the XP is only used for a set of games I'm addicted to, and got addicted to before I found out about GNU+Linux, everything important is done on the fedora boot (which is invisible to XP, as it doesn't ship able to read the file system, and, quite frankly, I don't want to let it see the file system)

If you can find any evidence to prove me wrong, please tell me, I'd love to know (read the spoiler first though)

OSX is supposed to have a wonderful user interface, I've actually been thinking of getting a copy and adding it to my boot set to try it out. It's also based on BSD UNIX, so it's still more secure than windows (I've heard it has LESS viruses for it than there are for Linux (something like 5 for OSX to 40 for Linux to 6000+ for windows, though these figures might be outdated)). Only reason not to use it is the application set and company policy.

sorry, I really don't like unqualified "X sucks" comments, even M$ did do good things for the computer industry, just that they were all at least 10 years ago.

I really will put together thog linux if I can get permission from Rich, I just pm'd him about it...

and that cthulhu for presedent banner is fantastic, reminds me of the random pet that always runs for student union president (the pet always gets decent votes too :-) )

Yes. Thog is a very funny character. He has those great one-liners, and the whole Elan-Thog escaping prison was an amazing sideplot.

But thats it. There is nothing extra special, no reason for super extra treatment, he isn't that funny (IMO). I think that most other characters are far more funny actually.
