If we look at other examples of seemingly dumb characters (and we are wierd and random), the poor conversational techniques of Thog may indeed simply indicate a much higher proficiency in his native language. For example, Draak in Irregular Webcomic (http://irregularwebcomic.net/215.html) speaks his native language like a rocket scientist, but can only speak monosyllabic Common.

Of all the linear guild, he's probably the only one to have any potential as a 'good guy'.... Not much mind you but a little.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Order of the Stick somehow 'converted' him, most likely with ample amounts of ice cream (and lots of sprinkles) and a dozen puppies. Although I think Banjo the puppet diety might interest him temporarily.

I just found a Thog reference in one of the Giant's roleplays (http://majik.be/roleplaying/impyrra/game7.html), and now I'm wondering how old it is ... older than Thog? I don't know when they were posted. The site says he played it 'last summer' but I don't know how often that area gets updated these days, could be before OOTS?

It's about 5/6 of the way down, where the Giant's character has been fighting a battle polymorphed as an orc, and when he's done he turns to the cityguards who have come to investigate the battle, waving them away with 'Grr, Thog not understand puny human.'

Well, on the intellegence issue I have this to say.

Nale states in one of the comic strips that Thog's int was a dumpstat, however, it has been noted by Rich Burlew before that the things characters state are from their viewpoint, such as with V's gender. Just something to think on.

I wonder if anybody has mentioned this already, but Thog reminds me of the character Lennie in "Of Mice and Men"

He is like a child in a very strong mans body and hurts people without noticing it(like his puppy-blacksmith). They both follow another person who does the thinking for them. Lennie got a rather good Jack, but Thog follows the evil Nale which might have lead to his own evil alignment and behaviour

On the issue of Thog speaking fluent orc, but not common, if you notice, in strip#51, he thinks in common, not in orc, and he thinks just as simply and stupid as he talks. I'm not sure if anyone else has brought this up, but I didn't feel like reading through 12 pages of posts. :)

My favorite thing about him is that I definately role played him before I read this comic. I was a half orc barbarian named Og.

perhaps thog isnt really stupid? Charisma is more than just being ugly- its all kinds of social intereactions, including how you talk. Thog has low charisma. Also, its possible that he speaks Orc much more fluently than common, resulting in him sound like thog no have brain.

Half-orcs take a hit to int and cha. cha is the dump stat. int gets you skill points, for fun things like Intmidation skill. So we get a very blunt and direct individual, who has trouble communicating properly, and likes to be violent. stupid is the assumption, but its not necesarily true. Int 9 is well within 'average' intellegence, for both humans and half-orcs.

Thog reminds me of Big Crunch/Chummley from the Myth series by Robert Asprin. Masquerading as a mean, nasty, eager-to-kill troll while "on the job" but just happens to be very personable when with friends.

I think Thog has the Linear Guild jumping though hoops just to keep himself entertained. They deffinately cant control him..only keep him appeased.
