So, I was tweeting back and forth with MM earlier today, and the following conversation happened:

What are everyone else's thoughts on this? I would be down for this, and I think it could end up being really cool.

I am glad that he has it as a Sorcerer subclass, rather than a Wizard subclass, because we do already have the Bladesinger. And personally, I think that a Sorcerer's limited spells known fits the Sword Mage better than a Wizard's expansive list.

I could also see it doing well as a Warlock subclass, getting sword based Eldritch Invocations - and the Pact of the Blade would be awesome for it ^_^

He seems to want to fit into into a caster archetype.

The problem is caster with a bit of melee is still primarily a caster (see Bladesinger). A swordmage is not a caster. It is a melee with some gish for casting.

EK-style or a whole different class (hundreds of homebrew exist) are the only options imo.

It probably should be a half-caster class, but if they're making them a full-caster is their design choice, then I like the Sorcerer for that ^_^
